In dem Dramolett Rosamunde, dem dritten der fünf Prinzessinendramen, die den Zyklus Der Tod und das Mädchen I-V bilden, zitiert und verfremdet Elfriede Jelinek ein romantisches Stück von Helmina von Chézy, einer Autorin des 19. Jahrhunderts, die nicht sehr erfolgreich mit ihren Texten war. Dieser Artikel geht der Frage nach, wie die im Text verwendete diskursive Gewalt eine strukturelle, soziale und implizite Gewalt gegen Frauen sichtbar macht. Ausgehend von der performativen Theorie von Judith Butler, sollen die Strategien erforscht werden, mit denen der Text den etablierten Diskurs, der Weiblichkeit und Ohnmacht verbindet, destabilisiert und eine Reartikulation von hate speech möglich macht.Female powerlessness and violence in Elfriede Jelinek’s Der Tod und das Mädchen III Rosamunde. Performative readingsIn the mini-drama Rosamunde, the third of the five Prinzessinnendramen, which form the cycle Der Tod und das Mädchen I–V, Elfriede Jelinek quotes and paraphrases a romantic play written by Helmina von Chézy, a female author of the 19th century who earned little fame with her writings. This article explores the use of discursive violence to demonstrate that its use in the text uncovers social, structural and implicit violence against women. Based on Judith Butler’s idea of performativity, the paper examines the way Jelinek’s text destabilizes the standardized role models, which connect femininity with powerlessness, and further questions and disturbs the use of hate speech.

The article considers the plays of Elfriede Jelinek in a broad context of postmodern critical discourses, the postdramatic turn and the Austrian drama tradition in the 20th and 21th centuries. The controversy over Jelinek’s work in Austrian culture is a key element in her artistic strategy targeted at the political correctness of modern societies, ideological opressions and the dead end of avant-garde metadrama. Ce travail met en lumière les enjeux de traduction et les faits de réception de l’œuvre théâtrale d’Elfriede Jelinek en France. La position traductologique qui y est défendue replace le texte au centre des réflexions, sans toutefois faire abstraction de la dimension politique et sociale du champ culturel dans lequel il émerge. Cette approche herméneutique et critique prend appui sur les théories du langage et de la traduction de Wilhelm v. Humboldt et de Friedrich Schleiermacher, réintroduites en France par les travaux d’Henri Meschonnic et d’Antoine Berman, et élargie par Lawrence Venuti. Dans l’optique d’une « traduisibilité raisonnée », la finalité de la traduction consiste à renvoyer à l’individualité étrangère du texte-source par un processus créatif de reconstruction. Après avoir formulé de manière générale les enjeux traductifs soulevés par l’écriture jelinekienne, une analyse de trois pièces (Was geschah, nachdem Nora ihren Mann verlassen hatte oder Stützen der Gesellschaften, Clara S. Musikalische Tragödie et Krankheit oder Moderne Frauen) et de leurs traductions rend compte en détail des enjeux et de leurs concrétisations, reflétant des positions traductives différentes se situant entre l’adaptation et la reconstruction créative. Seule cette dernière approche peut réellement tenir compte de « l’étrangeté » des textes jelinekiens. A cette étude purement traductologique suit une analyse de la réception concrète des pièces de théâtre, complétée par un aperçu de la réception de la prose et des versions scéniques et filmiques des romans, ainsi que des échos suite à l’attribution du Prix Nobel de littérature à Elfriede Jelinek
This thesis highlights the challenges of translation and the questions of reception of Elfriede Jelinek’s plays in France. Our specific translational position replaces the text in the centre of reflection, but not without also considering the political and social dimensions of the cultural field where it is created. This hermeneutic and critical approach is based on language and translation theories developed by Wilhelm v. Humboldt and Friedrich Schleiermacher, reintroduced in France by the works of Henri Meschonnic and Antoine Berman, completed by Lawrence Venuti. From the point of view of a “reasoned translationability”, the aim of translation is to refer to “strange” individuality of the source text via a creative process of reconstruction. After having pointed out the general translational challenges of the Elfriede Jelinek’s writing, an analysis of three plays (Was geschah, nachdem Nora ihren Mann verlassen hatte oder Stützen der Gesellschaften, Clara S. Musikalische Tragödie and Krankheit oder Moderne Frauen) and their translations gives a detailed overview of challenges and their realisations, reflecting different translational positions, reaching from adaptation to creative reconstruction. Only this latter approach can really integrate all dimensions of the “foreignness” of Jelinek’s texts. This analysis is supplemented by an overview of the concrete reception of plays and the reaction in French media, of the reception of prose and the theatre and film adaptations and also of the echoes following the Nobel Prize award for literature
