Full textMicroplastics are an important component of worldwide plastic waste accumulation. Due to their small size (≤ 5 mm), their removal is difficult, they function as vectors of contaminants, and interfere with the metabolism of species through the trophic chain. After being released into the oceanic or fluvial aquatic environment, microplastics tend to accumulate in sediments. As far as is known, there have been few studies on microplastics in sediments on the coast and none in freshwater systems such as rivers in Perú, despite being an important way of contribution to the ocean system. For this reason, this thesis focuses on designing a microplastics monitoring strategy on fluvial sediments, taking as an environmental unit of study the lower basin to the mouth of the Jequetepeque River (La Libertad Region, Perú), implementing the most appropriate microplastics extraction methodology, characterizing the microplastics isolated, and analyzing the spatial distribution of these pollutants. The lower basin of the Jequetepeque River has been selected because it is a highly intervened basin: agricultural activities in the area, disorderly distribution of population centers, and whose mouth is near sites of high archaeological historical value. The microplastics are identified by Raman spectroscopy and classified according to their shape, color and type of polymer. Eighteen items were found, mainly fragments and films, composed mostly of polyethylene and polypropylene. It is very likely that, given the absence of ageing on the surface of the microplastics, they are part of the secondary microplastics category. This work contributes with a model that can be easily replicated in other watersheds of the country to gather the necessary information on microplastics in continental aquatic environments for responsible environmental management.

Full textThe "development of water resources", basically for specific sectoral purposes, has been implemented in many water projects in Latin America and the Caribbean; that is, without an integrated management approach. In spite of all the investments made and with near 30 years of development of the Jequetepeque - Zaña Special Project, one has the perception that the objectives set out in the Feasibility Study of 1973 for the first stage would not have been reached yet; as evidenced by the low increase in production, little incorporation of new land and intensive land use. Thus, the present thesis finds that Jequetepeque basin there is no integral water management (despite the efforts made), expressed in: few and inadequate use of water management instruments; low knowledge of water culture; inefficiency of the basic components of water management; and the need to implement strategic irrigation and drainage projects. Therefore, the need to execute Integrated Water Resources Management - IWRM (different uses of water resources are considered jointly), starting from the proposal of some Bases for its implementation. With installation of the Council of Water Resources of the Basin of the Jequetepeque river, will should make joint efforts for behavior changes to achieve process management and raise awareness of the integrated water resources management.

Full textThe establishment of surface water quality monitoring programs plays a key role in the Integrated Water Resources Management. These programs include the definition of the monitoring objectives, the network desing, the sampling protocol, laboratory samples analysis, collection and processing of data through which the desired information will be obtained about the physical, chemical and biological properties of the monitored water body. Therefore, to ensure a sustainable water resources management, a periodically assessment of the monitoring network is mandatory. In Perú, 67% of the socio-environmental conflicts registered between 2011 and 2014 were related to water quality and 62% to disputes between mining and agriculture. As a management measure, the National Water Authority has established surface water quality monitoring networks in one hundred basins, and has monitored the surface water quality 434 times. A representative basin in the country, one which has agriculture and mining as principal socio-economic activities and also presents latent socio-environmental conflicts related to water, is the Jequetepeque river basin. Since the 80's, surface water quality monitoring programs in the Jequetepeque river basin has been executed by different institutions and each one has established monitoring networks according to their objectives. Nevertheless, the surface water quality monitoring networks assessment has not been taken into account in any water national plan. The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the surface water quality monitoring network in the Jequetepeque river basin using statistical significance analysis of the water quality monitoring stations and water quality parameters established to evaluate the water quality in the basin. Multivariate statistical techniques like factor analysis (FA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) has been applied to the water quality monitoring database collected in the basin between 2015 and 2016 by the National Water Authority. Results identified that only 5,88% of the monitoring stations and 5% of the water quality parameters were statistical uncorrelated with the other stations and analyzed parameters in the monitoring network. The discarding of the station and parameter that were less correlated may be inadequate, due to the importance of both for the monitoring network. Four main groups define the surface water quality in the basin: the first group is highly related to the electric conductivity and is mainly distributed in the lower part of the basin, a second group is related to suspended solids and is distributed in all the basin, and two groups constituted by trace elements and fecal coliform are principal distributed in the higher part of the basin. Finally, this thesis showed that multivariate statistical techniques can be effectively applied in the analysis of water quality monitoring networks and can be employed in the sustainable management of water resources.
