Abstract:
The main features of the Grateful Dead’s long-term project were formed, in utero as it were, by 1958. This was Jerry Garcia’s annus mirabilis, the twelve short months between his fifteenth and sixteenth birthdays. During this blessed interval, he received his first guitar, smoked his first joint, took courses at the California School of Fine Arts, and read Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. By themselves, none of these events counts for much. Many baby boomers had similar experiences, and most haven’t been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But when we set these experiences against the larger cultural forces that were sweeping through San Francisco at the time, and when we consider their profound effect on Jerome John Garcia, they help us understand not only the Dead’s interest in ecstasy, mobility, and community, but also the source of the band’s sustained appeal.

Abstract:
AbstractAmong the many differing interpretations reported by St. Jerome is the set ascribed to "our Judaizers," who are in reality Christian interpreters with whom Jerome disagrees. In his own exegesis of the prophets, Jerome accepts both the literal/historical meaning of the "Hebrews" (Jews) as it relates to Israel's past (Old Testament history), and the spiritual/allegorical meaning of the church as it relates to the present or future. The interpretations that Jerome regards as "Judaizing" are almost all attempts to assign a literal meaning to the future. It is this combination (literal and future) that Jerome rejects as "Judaizing."

Abstract:
The publication in 1516 of Erasmus of Rotterdam’s New Testament and his edition of St. Jerome invites an exploration of his concept and deployment of this Church Father’s exegetical authority. A thorough analysis of Erasmus’s Annotations on the New Testament shows that he appealed to Jerome among other Fathers and on his own. Jerome figures primarily in the main business of the Annotations: the establishment of a correct Latin translation of the text of the New Testament. His role in the theological dimension of exegesis is secondary. Erasmus’s use of Jerome as authoritative support for his exegetical judgments as well as his criticisms of Jerome have the effect of asserting his credentials as an authoritative exegete.

Abstract:
This thesis demonstrates that Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat functions as a parody of an Imperial adventure narrative, mimicking Henry Morton Stanley's How I Found Livingstone, as well as works by H. Rider Haggard and G. A. Henty. It acts to critically disfigure its literary source texts, as well as to question tenets of heroic masculinity. This primary parody in turn suggests how Jerome's wider body of work acts on other more social source texts which are bound up with ideas of Imperial adventure. Jerome's writing acknowledges and undermines contemporary ideas of urban enervation and declining national fitness, proposing instead a valid office clerk masculinity in opposition to an Imperial one. His protagonists evoke and undermine contemporary urban escape programmes and boys organizations, such as the Boys' Brigade. Similarly, Jerome also targets the efforts of social reformers who carry out urban exploration, while using and endorsing the site of the music hall to argue for a type of urban masculinity. He brings together ideas of urban degeneration, imperial travel and sexual danger to portray the practice of urban exploration as a parodic corruption of explorative heroism. Jerome's work also demonstrates an attempt to resolve notions of clerkish enervation with authorship as a career, His novels express an authorial anxiety about the suitability of writing as a masculine profession, which is comparable with George Gissing's New Grub Street. Jerome is revealed to be a crucial focal point which brings together intersecting fin de siecle ideas of masculinity, heroism, class and national fitness, and fully explicates how these interact. These concerns anticipate preoccupations of modernist texts.

Carboxylic ionophores used as anticoccidial additives in poultry feed are currently under reevaluation by the European food safety authority in order to assess the safety of the consumer. This work has contributed to the knowledge of pharmacokinetics of monensin in chickens and turkeys and salinomycin in chickens in order to establish some generalities about carboxylic ionophores in poultry. The three examples taken as experimental subject during this thesis have shown a low oral bioavaibility and a rapid elimination driving to a calculated withdrawal period of less than 22 hours in any case. During these works, in vitro and in vivo experiments were used to attribute values to parameters allowing to implement a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model. A physiological model of monensin in chickens has then been tested. Simulations of this model reproduce concentrations observed after a single administration by intravenous or oral route but overestimate concentrations after repeated oral administrations in the supplemented food

Full text
Abstract:
The Dilectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) employed here consists of a surface electrical discharge established in air at atmospheric pressure on a dielectric wall. This discharge ionizes the ambient air and the produced species charged submitted to Coulomb forces induce by a momentum transfer a flow called electric wind. Recently, the ability of this device to control subsonic airflow around of aerodynamic profils has been demonstrated. The DBD used here is called plasma actuator. These actuators are able to modify the boundary layer close to the wall by the electric wind. The goal of this thesis is to improve the aerodynamic performances of an airfoil, either by increasing its lift or by reducing its drag, either by delaying the stall of the profile. The present work divides in two parts. The first part has consisted in developping and optimizing a dielectric barrier discharge in order to understand its operating. For that, a parametric study has been conducted by varying the electrical, physical and geometrical parameters. Electrical and mechanical measurements have been realised. Then the electromechanical parameters such as efficiency have been determined and compared. These different studies allowed to define a system of parameters allowing to obtain an optimum DBD in terms of electric wind generation and fiability. The second part has consisted in integrating the optimised plasma actuator on a NACA 0015 profile and in testing its effectiveness to control an airflow up to 40 m/s. For that, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements and force balance measurements have been realized without, and then with control. The influence of different parameters (frequency and intensity of excitation, operation mode) has been investigated. It was highlighted an airflow modification under the effects of control which favors the reattachemnt or the detachment. The effectiveness of the steady and unsteady actuations of the actuator has been compared. Modulated by a dimensionless frequency F+, the unsteady mode presents equivalent results and even greater than the steady actuation while reducing the consumption of the DBD

Abstract:
The Squeeze Film Damper (SFD) is a component used in the aeronautical industry for damping aircraft engines rotors guided by roller bearings and working at supercritical regimes. The vibration of the rotor entrained by an external excitation is then damped by a thin film confined between the roller bearing and the engine casing. A modelling of the thin fluid film is then necessary for a good estimation of the forces engendered by the vibrations of the rotor. For industrial working conditions, the SFD is provided with feeding and sealing systems that must be taken into account in the theoretical model. Moreover, low pressures engendered in the film entrain the vaporisation of the fluid that must be also taken into account. Meanwhile, for real working conditions the flow is dominated by inertia effects and a simple model based on Reynolds equation is not appropriate any more. The model must be then based on a system of equations similar to Navier Stokes equations

Abstract:
The Multifaceted Poetry of Jerome Rothenberg deals with the methods applied by Jerome Rothenbergs poetics. Born in New York, in 1931, Rothenberg was part of a generation in between well known poetic movements: the beatnik poetry from the 1950s e 1960s and the language poetry of the 1970s. With fellow poet Robert Kelly, Rothenberg starts the deep image in the 1960, a short-lived movement, yet an essential one for his poetic development. Rothenberg is better known for having coined the term etnopoetry and for his experimentations with what he called total translation, while working with North-American Indian poetry. Total translation was an innovative method in considering musicality, the presence of word distortions or meaningless words and other poetic mechanisms of Indian poetry as an integral part of a poem or song, so that the resultant translation would necessarily contemplate all these aspects. From the perspective of his saying primitive is complex, Rothenberg starts considering the characteristics of poetry from oral culture, or those called primitive, as the basis for his concept of an etnopoetics. His search for the primitive also connects him with authors read as experimental in poetry, from William Blake and Walt Whitman to Allen Ginsberg, passing through the modernist triad Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams and Gertrude Stein. The hypothesis of this thesis is to show how the etnopoetic impulse, apparently restricted to his work as anthologist and translator, is, in reality, much more broad in its spectrum and includes his own poetic production. Etnopoetry then becomes the concept we can use to read his return to his Jewish ancestrality and the poems dealing with topics such as the life of Jews in Poland in the 1930s, the mystical kabbalah and the Holocaust. This thesis also shows his insertion in the poetic scene, and debates questions like authorship, influence, and originality

Abstract:
Jerry Herman is celebrated for his ability to showcase strong leading female roles in his canon of work that spans some fifty years. In writing such strong female characters, he must produce strong male counterparts to these women who can communicate on their level and not become overpowered by the women s presence. I was cast in the musical revue, It s Today: An Evening of Jerry Herman, conceived, directed, and choreographed by Earl D. Weaver. My portion of the revue explored Herman s leading male roles of Cornelius from Hello, Dolly!; Mack from Mack and Mabel; Colonel Tadeusz Boleslav Stjerbinsky from The Grand Tour; and Albin from La Cage aux Folles, My analysis of these specific leading male roles uncovers how their relationships with their leading ladies defines their character in each of the musicals for which they were written. It also helped me define multiple characters in the course of a revue with no plot or storyline. Though all these male characters provided me with challenges, my greatest task was defining Albin in La Cage aux Folles. He provides a unique perspective in that he exemplifies a combination of both male/female characteristics. He is a man who regularly portrays a woman onstage in a drag club as well as assuming a female role in a homosexual relationship. He serves as the  leading lady for La Cage aux Folles though his character is considered a  leading man role. He is the consummate representation of all Jerry Herman leading roles, and embodies many of the themes Herman utilizes in all his work.

Cleary, Nicole. "Jerome on the attack : constructing a polemical persona." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10661.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that Jerome’s polemics against Helvidius, Jovinian, and Vigilantius were tailored to boost Jerome’s status within the Christian community, and were carefully constructed pieces of abusive rhetoric, rather than the result of his famed curmudgeonly character. These treatises are studied in light of both the ancient rhetorical tradition within which Jerome was trained, and modern theories of abusive rhetoric. This thesis is demonstrated in six chapters. Chapter 1 demonstrates that past scholarship focused on ‘Jerome the man’, his self-invention, and his academic and spiritual qualities, without giving adequate attention to how Jerome used these qualities in his compositions. Chapter 2 focuses on ancient and modern theories of rhetoric in order to set out a methodology of abusive rhetoric that highlights Burkean identification. In addition, this chapter studies how rhetoric can define and challenge social hierarchies. Chapter 3 discusses Jerome’s awareness of social standing through discussion of his interactions with three of his contemporaries: Augustine, Rufinus, and Ambrose. It examines how Jerome altered his rhetoric to reflect his perception of the relative social status of his correspondents. Part 2 studies three of Jerome’s treatises in light of the conclusion of Part 1. Chapter 4 analyzes Jerome’s Adversus Helvidium, and argues that Jerome’s rhetoric serves to contrast himself with Helvidius, whose heretical, fame-seeking character illuminates Jerome as a humble and conservative Christian. It argues that Jerome’s rhetoric in this treatise aimed for episcopal authority. Chapter 5 studies Jerome’s Adversus Iovinianum and argues that the polemic sought to extend Jerome’s views on asceticism to a wider audience, and potentially secure favor for himself following his expulsion from Rome. He presents Jovinian as a deceptive sinner with a dissolute lifestyle, and himself as an authoritative savior. Although Jerome attempted to connect to the elite in the Christian community, his tract was a failure due to an inability to identify successfully with the audience on the topic of virginity. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses Jerome’s Contra Vigilantium. Jerome presents Vigilantius as a boorish Gallic innkeeper, in contrast to himself as an urbane, albeit snobbish, orthodox Christian. Jerome’s rhetoric carefully identifies himself with upper class Christians, as well as the Emperor, apostles, and martyrs, thereby claiming their agreement with his view of orthodoxy. In sum, I argue that Jerome’s rhetoric served to construct a polemical persona that he attempted to use to further his Christian career, and shape his own image. While this was not entirely successful in his own day, Jerome’s rhetoric did ultimately succeed in crafting an image of himself as an orthodox and authoritative father of the Church.
