Abstract:
This thesis details the recognized and recpected personalities of Marek Jerie, which draws from the perspective of teaching and interpretative operation, but also closer to him as a person and a prominent figure of cultural events.Aside leaves or inconvenience caused by the previous regime and his departure into exile.Trough the work is also very close encounter with leading personalities of the world´s Cello ( Bohus Heran, Pablo Cassals, Andrér Navara, Mstislav Rostropovich ad.).With their views on the interpretation and art in general is their nature. Also appears in many of the links and interconnections struktures of world of the art. A very important point of this paper is a summary view of Jerieho interpretation and recording activities resting on the study of contemporary international critics. In addition to solo action Jerie was a member of several chamber ensembles ( Guarneri Trio Prague, Duo Bohuslava Martinů, and others.). In detail, the work in this regard focuses on Jerie´s artistic effect with the Guarneri Trio Prague, of which member is over twenty five years. One of the last chapters look at his teaching "laboratory ". His pupils are successfully applied worldwide, and its methods are widely recognized world wide cello public.

Abstract:
This thesis demonstrates that Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat functions as a parody of an Imperial adventure narrative, mimicking Henry Morton Stanley's How I Found Livingstone, as well as works by H. Rider Haggard and G. A. Henty. It acts to critically disfigure its literary source texts, as well as to question tenets of heroic masculinity. This primary parody in turn suggests how Jerome's wider body of work acts on other more social source texts which are bound up with ideas of Imperial adventure. Jerome's writing acknowledges and undermines contemporary ideas of urban enervation and declining national fitness, proposing instead a valid office clerk masculinity in opposition to an Imperial one. His protagonists evoke and undermine contemporary urban escape programmes and boys organizations, such as the Boys' Brigade. Similarly, Jerome also targets the efforts of social reformers who carry out urban exploration, while using and endorsing the site of the music hall to argue for a type of urban masculinity. He brings together ideas of urban degeneration, imperial travel and sexual danger to portray the practice of urban exploration as a parodic corruption of explorative heroism. Jerome's work also demonstrates an attempt to resolve notions of clerkish enervation with authorship as a career, His novels express an authorial anxiety about the suitability of writing as a masculine profession, which is comparable with George Gissing's New Grub Street. Jerome is revealed to be a crucial focal point which brings together intersecting fin de siecle ideas of masculinity, heroism, class and national fitness, and fully explicates how these interact. These concerns anticipate preoccupations of modernist texts.

Carboxylic ionophores used as anticoccidial additives in poultry feed are currently under reevaluation by the European food safety authority in order to assess the safety of the consumer. This work has contributed to the knowledge of pharmacokinetics of monensin in chickens and turkeys and salinomycin in chickens in order to establish some generalities about carboxylic ionophores in poultry. The three examples taken as experimental subject during this thesis have shown a low oral bioavaibility and a rapid elimination driving to a calculated withdrawal period of less than 22 hours in any case. During these works, in vitro and in vivo experiments were used to attribute values to parameters allowing to implement a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model. A physiological model of monensin in chickens has then been tested. Simulations of this model reproduce concentrations observed after a single administration by intravenous or oral route but overestimate concentrations after repeated oral administrations in the supplemented food

Poitiers, 2008. http://theses.edel.univ-poitiers.fr/theses/2008/Jolibois-Jerome/2008-Jolibois-Jerome-These.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The Dilectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) employed here consists of a surface electrical discharge established in air at atmospheric pressure on a dielectric wall. This discharge ionizes the ambient air and the produced species charged submitted to Coulomb forces induce by a momentum transfer a flow called electric wind. Recently, the ability of this device to control subsonic airflow around of aerodynamic profils has been demonstrated. The DBD used here is called plasma actuator. These actuators are able to modify the boundary layer close to the wall by the electric wind. The goal of this thesis is to improve the aerodynamic performances of an airfoil, either by increasing its lift or by reducing its drag, either by delaying the stall of the profile. The present work divides in two parts. The first part has consisted in developping and optimizing a dielectric barrier discharge in order to understand its operating. For that, a parametric study has been conducted by varying the electrical, physical and geometrical parameters. Electrical and mechanical measurements have been realised. Then the electromechanical parameters such as efficiency have been determined and compared. These different studies allowed to define a system of parameters allowing to obtain an optimum DBD in terms of electric wind generation and fiability. The second part has consisted in integrating the optimised plasma actuator on a NACA 0015 profile and in testing its effectiveness to control an airflow up to 40 m/s. For that, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements and force balance measurements have been realized without, and then with control. The influence of different parameters (frequency and intensity of excitation, operation mode) has been investigated. It was highlighted an airflow modification under the effects of control which favors the reattachemnt or the detachment. The effectiveness of the steady and unsteady actuations of the actuator has been compared. Modulated by a dimensionless frequency F+, the unsteady mode presents equivalent results and even greater than the steady actuation while reducing the consumption of the DBD

Abstract:
The Squeeze Film Damper (SFD) is a component used in the aeronautical industry for damping aircraft engines rotors guided by roller bearings and working at supercritical regimes. The vibration of the rotor entrained by an external excitation is then damped by a thin film confined between the roller bearing and the engine casing. A modelling of the thin fluid film is then necessary for a good estimation of the forces engendered by the vibrations of the rotor. For industrial working conditions, the SFD is provided with feeding and sealing systems that must be taken into account in the theoretical model. Moreover, low pressures engendered in the film entrain the vaporisation of the fluid that must be also taken into account. Meanwhile, for real working conditions the flow is dominated by inertia effects and a simple model based on Reynolds equation is not appropriate any more. The model must be then based on a system of equations similar to Navier Stokes equations

Abstract:
The Multifaceted Poetry of Jerome Rothenberg deals with the methods applied by Jerome Rothenbergs poetics. Born in New York, in 1931, Rothenberg was part of a generation in between well known poetic movements: the beatnik poetry from the 1950s e 1960s and the language poetry of the 1970s. With fellow poet Robert Kelly, Rothenberg starts the deep image in the 1960, a short-lived movement, yet an essential one for his poetic development. Rothenberg is better known for having coined the term etnopoetry and for his experimentations with what he called total translation, while working with North-American Indian poetry. Total translation was an innovative method in considering musicality, the presence of word distortions or meaningless words and other poetic mechanisms of Indian poetry as an integral part of a poem or song, so that the resultant translation would necessarily contemplate all these aspects. From the perspective of his saying primitive is complex, Rothenberg starts considering the characteristics of poetry from oral culture, or those called primitive, as the basis for his concept of an etnopoetics. His search for the primitive also connects him with authors read as experimental in poetry, from William Blake and Walt Whitman to Allen Ginsberg, passing through the modernist triad Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams and Gertrude Stein. The hypothesis of this thesis is to show how the etnopoetic impulse, apparently restricted to his work as anthologist and translator, is, in reality, much more broad in its spectrum and includes his own poetic production. Etnopoetry then becomes the concept we can use to read his return to his Jewish ancestrality and the poems dealing with topics such as the life of Jews in Poland in the 1930s, the mystical kabbalah and the Holocaust. This thesis also shows his insertion in the poetic scene, and debates questions like authorship, influence, and originality

Mansell, John. "JERRY HERMAN'S LEADING LADIES." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3334.

Abstract:
Jerry Herman is celebrated for his ability to showcase strong leading female roles in his canon of work that spans some fifty years. In writing such strong female characters, he must produce strong male counterparts to these women who can communicate on their level and not become overpowered by the women s presence. I was cast in the musical revue, It s Today: An Evening of Jerry Herman, conceived, directed, and choreographed by Earl D. Weaver. My portion of the revue explored Herman s leading male roles of Cornelius from Hello, Dolly!; Mack from Mack and Mabel; Colonel Tadeusz Boleslav Stjerbinsky from The Grand Tour; and Albin from La Cage aux Folles, My analysis of these specific leading male roles uncovers how their relationships with their leading ladies defines their character in each of the musicals for which they were written. It also helped me define multiple characters in the course of a revue with no plot or storyline. Though all these male characters provided me with challenges, my greatest task was defining Albin in La Cage aux Folles. He provides a unique perspective in that he exemplifies a combination of both male/female characteristics. He is a man who regularly portrays a woman onstage in a drag club as well as assuming a female role in a homosexual relationship. He serves as the  leading lady for La Cage aux Folles though his character is considered a  leading man role. He is the consummate representation of all Jerry Herman leading roles, and embodies many of the themes Herman utilizes in all his work.

Cleary, Nicole. "Jerome on the attack : constructing a polemical persona." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10661.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that Jerome’s polemics against Helvidius, Jovinian, and Vigilantius were tailored to boost Jerome’s status within the Christian community, and were carefully constructed pieces of abusive rhetoric, rather than the result of his famed curmudgeonly character. These treatises are studied in light of both the ancient rhetorical tradition within which Jerome was trained, and modern theories of abusive rhetoric. This thesis is demonstrated in six chapters. Chapter 1 demonstrates that past scholarship focused on ‘Jerome the man’, his self-invention, and his academic and spiritual qualities, without giving adequate attention to how Jerome used these qualities in his compositions. Chapter 2 focuses on ancient and modern theories of rhetoric in order to set out a methodology of abusive rhetoric that highlights Burkean identification. In addition, this chapter studies how rhetoric can define and challenge social hierarchies. Chapter 3 discusses Jerome’s awareness of social standing through discussion of his interactions with three of his contemporaries: Augustine, Rufinus, and Ambrose. It examines how Jerome altered his rhetoric to reflect his perception of the relative social status of his correspondents. Part 2 studies three of Jerome’s treatises in light of the conclusion of Part 1. Chapter 4 analyzes Jerome’s Adversus Helvidium, and argues that Jerome’s rhetoric serves to contrast himself with Helvidius, whose heretical, fame-seeking character illuminates Jerome as a humble and conservative Christian. It argues that Jerome’s rhetoric in this treatise aimed for episcopal authority. Chapter 5 studies Jerome’s Adversus Iovinianum and argues that the polemic sought to extend Jerome’s views on asceticism to a wider audience, and potentially secure favor for himself following his expulsion from Rome. He presents Jovinian as a deceptive sinner with a dissolute lifestyle, and himself as an authoritative savior. Although Jerome attempted to connect to the elite in the Christian community, his tract was a failure due to an inability to identify successfully with the audience on the topic of virginity. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses Jerome’s Contra Vigilantium. Jerome presents Vigilantius as a boorish Gallic innkeeper, in contrast to himself as an urbane, albeit snobbish, orthodox Christian. Jerome’s rhetoric carefully identifies himself with upper class Christians, as well as the Emperor, apostles, and martyrs, thereby claiming their agreement with his view of orthodoxy. In sum, I argue that Jerome’s rhetoric served to construct a polemical persona that he attempted to use to further his Christian career, and shape his own image. While this was not entirely successful in his own day, Jerome’s rhetoric did ultimately succeed in crafting an image of himself as an orthodox and authoritative father of the Church.

Gustin, Mae Sexauer. "A PETROGRAPHIC, GEOCHEMICAL AND STABLE ISOTOPE STUDY OF THE UNITED VERDE OREBODY AND ITS ASSOCIATED ALTERATION, JEROME, ARIZONA." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187546.

Full text
Abstract:
The United Verde orebody, a Proterozoic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit, is hosted by the Cleopatra Formation. The Cleopatra Formation is subdivided into two distinct members, the Upper and Lower, on the basis of alteration facies, whole rock geochemistry and the chemistry of alteration minerals. The Lower member was deposited prior to ore deposition and consists of five major alteration facies. Facies Bl, the most distant from the orebody represents the recharge area for the ore-forming fluid. Facies B2 surrounds the major discharge area or the chlorite pipe. These three facies contain chlorite and quartz as alteration minerals in variable amounts. Two facies, 81 and S2, contain quartz and sericite as alteration minerals. Mass balance calculations show progressive removal of Na and Ca, and addition of MgO and FeO* from the area of recharge (facies Bl) to facies B2 to the chlorite pipe. Whole rock δ¹⁸O values are high relative to least altered Cleopatra Formation in the recharge area and low in the discharge zone. Mineralogy and geochemistry of samples from the Upper member indicate that it was deposited following ore deposition and interacted with fluids rich in silica and iron. The hydrothermal fluid, which is interpreted to have been seawater, evolved to a high temperature slightly acidic, reduced fluid during water-rock interaction(log a₀₂ = -33 to -41; log a(H2S) = -2.6 to -5.0). The fluid δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C₀₂ values increased. Calculated δ¹³C₀₂ and δ¹⁸O fluid values, and sphalerite and chlorite chemistry imply that mixing of the hydrothermal fluid with seawater occurred in the orebody. the upper The levels of the chlorite pipe and in limited range in δ³⁴S values of sulfides is consistent with the derivation of the oreforming fluids from the reduced basal layer of a stratified basin. The study area represents only a small part of the United Verde circulation cell. Increased δ¹⁸O values of the fluid, and the need for a source of Mg, Fe and other metals suggest that the fluids may have circulated into the Shea Basalt.

Abstract:
It is obvious that the book of jeremiah is the result of a complex and lengthy process of literary evolution. It remains nonetheless possible to look for jeremiah's own declarations on several subjects. Such a quest is here undertoken concerning the question of the temple. The first part is a study of the terminology of the temple used in the book of jeremiah in the second part, several passages in jeremiah which appear to be concerned with the question of the temple are submitted to detailed exegesis. These analyses allow the conclusion that jeremiah rejected the judean temple ideology based on the election of jerusalem through god

Abstract:
Everyone working on Porphyry's 'Against the Christians' refers to the fragment collection compiled by Adolf von Harnack in 1916. Harnack's scholarship was impressive, but his work is difficult to use, and needs revision in the light of new approaches to the collection and interpretation of fragments. This dissertation draws mainly on the methodological work of Most et al. (1997) to argue that a fragment should not be read apart from its contextual framework. The dissertation analyses the fragments preserved in Eusebius, Jerome, and Augustine, and explains how each author's agenda, as well as their religious and intellectual contexts, influence the way in which they refer to Porphyry. Ultimately, this study aims at proposing a new fragment collection.

Full text
Abstract:
The figure of the idiot provides a key to Charyn’s imaginary landscape. The recurrence of the motif does not mean, however, that it is immediately intelligible. Charyn’s idiocy is, indeed, multifaceted and originates in an essentially personal vision. Despite undeniable intertextual references – Charyn names Faulkner’s Benjy as a main source of inspiration – marked deviations testify to his independence from other literary models or from the archetypal representations of idiocy. The first part is a typology of idiocy understood as a problematic interaction with the world and in particular with language. Seen at first through the lens of the normal/abnormal dichotomy, the character of the idiot is perceived as monstrous and marginalized on the threefold level of space, speech and story. In some cases the idiot’s radical otherness becomes transgressive, turning him into the center, the subject rather than the object of a then entirely subjective universe. The second part shows the self-reflexive dimension of the idiotic character, through the description of the illiterate Bronx of the forties where he grew up surrounded by traumatized immigrants. This pervasive idiocy contrasts with Charyn’s own singular version of it – he is paradoxically the family idiot because he is the first one to get a degree and to evolve from dumbness towards articulateness. The third part deals with the regeneration of the figure of the idiot through the power of literature, specifically through autofictional writing, both self-reflexive and mythologized. Charyn becomes his own character, an idiot named Jerome, and reinvents his childhood idiots (his father Sam, mother Fannie, brother Harvey). The writer’s wordless music, or idiolect, is eventually externalized, giving birth to an original, idiosyncratic literary voice

Abstract: This study aimed to show defined custom orchestration effects found in Hollywood film industry soundtracks, via resources of instrumentation and orchestral tone established by Jerry Goldsmith. Under a chronological prospect, we outlined the development of techniques and formal method of orchestration through scores, at the same time with the evolution of instrumental sets in European music history. The spreading of symphonic music¿s boundaries and the technical innovation developed by the great composers became reference to us to focus to the first original music composers in the classical Hollywoodian cinema, and here we run into the first movies that depict the supernatural and the unknown mysteries of mankind, specially by Bernard Herrmann. The required tricks to creat a new orchestral sound which intended to play monsters and aliens in the music track ¿ human suffering as well ¿ turn up, as a last resort, our last mission: Jerry Goldsmith¿s legacy and the effects of the orchestral sounds on film

Abstract:

Abstract:
Even before settling permanently in Bethlehem, Jerome performs routine visit to Palestine, in his desire to know in depth and direct the holy places where Christ lived. Similarly, its concern to achieve a genuine know the scriptures him to undertake the arduous learning Hebrew. The first letters of his correspondence conserved dating from 380-381, years in which the author begins precisely at Chalcis, his introduction to the language of the Old Testament. The letters then written to reflect the difficulties faced by the father of the Vulgate throughout its review of the common translations of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew moose. The questions posed by cultivated and curious corresponding learn about the content of these moose are also the cause of philological comments from the Stridonien. The letters are therefore an excellent reflection of support for analyzing interactions between source culture and target-culture by interviewing many vocabulary difficulties and interpretation faced Jerome and the commentators cited by him, when it comes to spend Hebrew text to his Greek and Latin versions. This study is interested in Hebrew questions contained in the correspondence. The emphasis in Hebrew, in letters, and even in epistolary form, raises questions about the singular representation of the Hebrew language and the culture that surrounds it, and the image of 'interpres related to this representation. The challenges inherent in the resolution of this issue is important, since they relate both to how the Hebrew Bible is understood and translated by Jerome, the intellectual categories put to use by the letter writer to meet the challenges , the dogmatic consolidation of the fourth-century Church but also to the paradoxical question of the authority of the translator. The scrutiny of Hebrew texts by Jerome raises a major contradiction between the traditional conception of the relationship between barbarians and civilized languages languages, and the idealization of a quest for the Hebraica ueritas, put on the same plane as the trip to Earth Ste. It is therefore understand why and for what a Westerner grown as Jerome embarked on the difficult translation of the Bible from Hebrew. The adoption of such a reflection angle is mobilizing historical, historical-theological and linguistic, since we must consider the relationship between Jews and Christians in the fourth century. To highlight and clarify these issues, this analysis discusses, first, the definition anew intellectual Jerome profile by standing for this, with a view to transmitting knowledge related to the Hebrew Bible . This initial assessment leads to consider, second, how the author of mania Correspondence Hebrew, and putting in a new way, this handling in relation to the structure of letters and literary and rhetorical strategies that are are deployed. Third, we sought to understand what object representation of Hebrew study emerges from the corpus studied and how Jérôme proceeded to transform this representation source of authority for the Christian dogma as for himself - ironically, as a translator. The demonstration involves a central concept to analyze Jerome's methodology, that of ἱστορία. By combining different approaches related to the Hebrew issues, this analysis seeks to demonstrate that the wealth of Jerome's correspondence is far from having been fully covered by research and that some aspects, especially the interdependence philological and ideological perspectives were still fairly extensive

Abstract:
The problems of translating English humour into Lithuanian have not been thoroughly studied, therefore it has been chosen as a subject of this article. This research focuses on the analysis of examples of different sorts of humour in J. K. Jerome's novel "Three Men on a Bummel" and compares the source text with the target text. The present paper is assigned to provide a theoretical framework of humour phenomenon, its classification and translation peculiarities as well as to reveal the complexity of humour phenomenon which exists in every part of the world, nevertheless, travels badly from one language to another. The aim of the research is to identify and perceive the main challenges in translating humour that contains culture-specific items and instances of untranslatibility.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the many recorded adaptive responses in respiratory chain complex I deficient cells is the over-expression of the small metal binding proteins, metallothioneins (MTs). The antioxidant properties of MTs putatively protect the deficient cells against oxidative damage, thus limiting further damage and impairment of enzymes involved in energy production. Moreover, the role of metallothioneins in supplying metal cofactors to enzymes and transcription factors in order to promote energy metabolism was previously proposed, which could accompany their role as antioxidants. This view is supported by the observations that MT knockout mice tend to become moderately obese, implying a lower energy metabolic rate. Hence, the involvement of metallothioneins in mitochondrial function and disease cannot be ignored. However, this association is still very vague due to the diversity of their functions and the complexity of the mitochondrion. The use of systems biology technology and more specifically metabolomics technology was thus employed to clarify this association by investigating the metabolic differences between wild type and MT knockout mice in unchallenged conditions as well as when mitochondrial function (energy metabolism) was challenged with exercise and/or a high-fat diet. The metabolic differences between these mice were also studied when complex I of the respiratory chain was inhibited with rotenone. The metabolome content of different tissues and bio-fluids were examined in an untargeted fashion using three standardized analytical platforms and the data mined using modern metabolomics and related statistical methods. Clear metabolic differences were found between the wild type and MT knockout mice during unchallenged conditions. These metabolic differences were persisted and were often amplified when mitochondrial metabolism was specifically challenged through exercise, high-fat intake or complex I inhibition. The data pointed to an overall reduced metabolic rate in the MT knockout mice and possible insulin resistance after the interventions which imply (and confirm) the involvement of MTs in promoting energy metabolism in the wild type mice.

Abstract:
The trajectory of the director and researcher in the field of performing arts Jerzy Grotowski is divided in five periods: Theatre of Productions, Paratheatre, Theatre of Sources, Objective Drama and Art as Vehicle. The Doctoral Thesis traces an itinerary through the last stage of Grotowski´s work, called Art as Vehicle and developed since the mid-eighties at the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in Pontedera, Italy. In the present Thesis, starting from its author´s first hand experience as a doer, each one of the elements of work that configure the corpus of the practice of Art as Vehicle is described and systematically analyzed, as well as the principles that underlie them. Through an approach from a double, theoretical-practical, perspective and starting from Grotowski´s own “voice” as well as the ones of the heirs of his legacy, Thomas Richards and Mario Biagini, and of reknown professors, practitioners and specialists, a possible Poetics of Art as Vehicle is proposed.
