Abstract:
Abstract This introductory article explores the thematic affinity linking the Society of Jesus with conspiracies and conspiracy theories. After giving a short overview of the historiography devoted to anti-Jesuitism, it draws attention to how anti-Jesuits vilified the order over the centuries on the basis of alleged conspiracies whose extent varied from the episodic to the all-encompassing and that were imagined and posited in ways that tended to be themselves highly conspiratorial. In this manner, it foregrounds aspects of anti-Jesuitism and conspiracy theories that will recur in the individual contributions to this special issue of the Journal of Jesuit Studies.

Abstract:
When dealing with the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal and with the building of anti-Jesuitism in the eighteenth century, historians usually focus on their alleged involvement in the attempt to murder king Dom José I and on the complex economical questions related with the foundation of the state trade company in Brazil. However, the Pombaline accusation of obscurantism and scientific illiteracy also played a central role in the history of anti-Jesuitism in Portugal, mainly due to its wide acceptance and longevity. This argument was not only directly relevant for the expulsion of the Jesuits in the eighteenth century but it was also a keystone of the anti-Jesuit propaganda that eventually led to the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Portugal in the twentieth century.

Abstract:
This article investigates one of the most curious figures in the anti-Jesuit arsenal, the female Jesuit, or Jesuitess. In the middle decades of the nineteenth century, opponents of the Jesuits in a range of nations warned that the bedrock institutions of society were vulnerable to infiltration by this figure who in their mind combined Jesuit cunning with feminine charm. This made the female Jesuit, in words that were repeated in exposés of the Society, even more dangerous than the male Jesuit. Perhaps paradoxically, the female Jesuit tells us a great deal about the imagined nature of Jesuit masculinity. The existence of such a creature could seem plausible because Jesuitism itself appeared to be shrouded in an ambiguous masculinity. As an imagined space where gender confusion rather than clarity was thought to reign, the Society of Jesus naturally spawned a figure like the female Jesuit.

Abstract:
Abstract The restoration of the Jesuits in Tyrol in 1838/39 shocked the region’s liberals and this shock found expression in the medium of poetry as exemplified by the polemical “Jesuitenlieder” (Jesuit songs) that circulated throughout Tyrol and southern Germany. A few years later a debate developed in German newspapers about the influence of the Jesuits in Tyrol. While older, but also more recent studies often only focused on the literary quality and the liberal elements of the debate, the affinity of this discourse for the tropes of the conspiracy theory has been overlooked until now. Ultimately, the appeal of invoking such tropes was the possibility it afforded of branding the so-called “Jesuitism” and, in doing so, covertly criticizing the government.

Abstract:
AbstractRome’s decision to name an archpriest and to erect a highly irregular administrative structure, the archpresbyterate, surprised secular clergy and Jesuits who had advocated the establishment of bishops. Recent tension between Jesuits and secular clergy highlighted the need and importance of an hierarchical, ecclesiological office. But the appointment was made in such a way that some secular clergy questioned its legitimacy and authenticity. Until they ascertained that the decision had in fact been made by the pope, they withheld recognition of the archpriest. As they awaited a reply to their appeal, two Appellants, John Colleton and William Clarke, debated the matter with two Jesuit supporters of the archpriest, Henry Garnet and Edward Oldcorne who apparently failed to see the canonical issue involved, as they perceived anti-Jesuitism as the motivating factor.

Abstract:
The tenacious negative stereotypes of the Jesuits, conveyed to generations of Finnish school children through literary works in the national canon, were re-used in anti-Socialist discourse during and after the revolutionary year of 1917. Fear of the Bolshevik revolution in 1917 paradoxically strengthened the negative stereotype of “Jesuitism,” especially after the attempted revolution by Finnish Socialists that led to the Finnish Civil War of 1918. The fears connected to the revolution were also fears of democracy itself; various campaigning methods in the new era of mass politics were associated with older images of Jesuit proselytism. In rare cases, the enemy image of the political Jesuit was contrasted with actual Catholic individuals and movements.

On Chinese literati and Amazonian aides: Indigenous participation in the production of cartographic and geographic Jesuit knowledge in Asia and AmericaAbstractIn the study of the Jesuit cartographic production in the Americas, the indigenous contribution has been difficult to examine and, as a result, traditionally obliterated. The situation of the production of Jesuit science in Asia is, however, completely different because the discussion has dealt with the degree of mutual influence between the European missionary community and the local intelligentsia. Thus, the main objective is to underscore the indigenous participation in the case of the Jesuit cartographicand geographic production in early modern Amazonia. Keywords: cartography, natives, Jesuits, Amazonia, China. Abstract In the long history of anti-Jesuitism, the accusation that the Society of Jesus endorsed assassination and used it as a means to pursue its goals hardened into one of the recurring topoi that were repeatedly invoked to malign the order. However, the Society was clearly not born with this stigma. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how in the late sixteen and early seventeenth centuries an interplay of political events and doctrinal statements arose whose cumulative effect was to brand the Society with a reputation for approving the principle and abetting the practice of killing kings.

Abstract:
A frequent criticism of the Society of Jesus, and one which Martin Grene, the Jesuit apologist whose An Account of the Jesuites Life and Doctrine was published in 1661, was especially eager to refute, was the possession of immense wealth. Grene’s rebuttal began with a distinction between an individual Jesuit and a Jesuit institution. The former was forbidden to accept any financial compensation for his apostolic services. What he did, he did freely. Grene stressed that the work was done by the Society gratuitously and simply for the love of God. The Jesuits sought no reward but relied on the providence of God ‘who exciteth devout people to supply their [the Jesuits’] necessity out of pure charity’. The alms of the faithful supported the Society and, through its dependence on charity, the Society hoped to avoid all semblance of avarice and simony.

Abstract:
In 1728, JBG, a 48-year-old Jesuit in Toulon, was accused of abusing one of his penitents, Catherine Cadière, a 9-year-old with a tendency for mysical fervour. Though commonplace at the time, the event grew into a public scandal. The case was brought to court in Aix-en-Provence in 1731, in the context of an age-old struggle for power opposing Jesuits, Jansenists and philosophers. Public opinion was fiercely divided : polygraphs, satirists, letter-writers all reported and commented on this eventful case. Our work intends to explore the numerous written or graphic documents published in the 18th century : poems, prints, letters. All in all, much ado about nothing since both JBG and CC were discharged. The controversy, owever, was not over : it weakened the Jesuit influence and showed the determination of its enemies. Shortly thereafter, the candals of Damiens' assassination attempt and Lavalette's bankruptcy confirmed the strength of the anti-Jesuit movement. The tory was revived -by Michelet among others- throughout the 19th and the 20th centuries, always rewritten, with the addition of fictitious elements, for polemic purposes. Our study deals with the connection between history and literature and the ever-fluctuating recollection of the event

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation studies the presence of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines in the period 1581-1768. But the intention is not to write a complete history of the Jesuits in the archipelago, but to contrast the image that they tried to offer about themselves and their environment with the missionary reality that they carried out before the expulsion from the hispanic territory in the time of Carlos III. The work is divided in three parts, preceded by a preamble. This is a brief historic introduction to the Philippine colony, from the first contacts with Europeans to the half of the eighteenth century, marking the main political events and offering some information about the political, social and economic system of the colony. The first part is a digest of the historical trajectory of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines form 1581 to 1568. In the second part we offer elements for the understanding of the jesuit evangelic enterprise in the archipelago, from an inner view of the Society. From the analysis of a lot of letters, we analyse some fundamental topics in the construction process of the image of the Jesuits and their work in the Philippines. The first topic is about the precarious first years of the mission. The second one is about the organization in the different evangelization areas that were in charge of the Jesuits. Finally, the hard conditions that the missionary defied while working on the ground. The third part of the thesis approaches the cultural discourse that the members of the Society constructed about the nature of their missional action in the Philippines. First, we analyse the works of the official chroniclers of the Province of the Philippines, and the work of other “minor” authors. We also study the vision that the missionary had about the people that they potentially could evangelise, especially Filipino natives and Chinese. The image of the first was very influenced by the previous american experience, with the pattern of the “good savage” and the “monster” as a reference. Meanwhile, the vision of the Far East and their peoples had a centenary tradition, and was always an utopia for the colonisers of the Philippines.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is inserted in the confluence of several historiographic trends that have gained interest in the last decades in Spain. These are, on the one hand, the study of the economic, social, political and cultural relations of the Hispanic colonial space of the Pacific -that is, of Philippine Islands- which constituted the last colonial edge of the Hispanic Empire. Especially since the celebration of the fourth centenary of the discovery of America, research on the relations between the old metropolis and its colonies has been revitalized, both in the American territories and in the Pacific islands. On the other hand, in the last decades the studies on the Society of Jesus have stopped being limited to the historians of the own order, always pressured by this one, so that researchers of diverse specialties have deepened in their history and trajectory and in their influence in the historical processes of early modern times, fleeing from the simplistic and apologetic vision of the Jesuit authors. This new look is integrated into the renewal of cultural and religious history in our country, which has focused on the analysis of discourses and cultural practices, in our case of religious orders in the Hispanic world, where the Jesuits stand out. The Ignatians, as religious, cultural and also political agents of the border areas, have always constituted exceptional spectators of the interaction between the metropolis and its colonies. However, both in the study of the Ignatian Institute and in the Philippine colonial world there is a gap in the nineteenth century, that chronological space between modernity and contemporaneity that, historiographically, has been orphan. It is for this reason that our geo-chronological framework is the nineteenth-century Philippines, where the Society of Jesus returned after almost a century of absence. The objective of this thesis is to trace the trajectory of the Ignatian Institute in the Philippine Islands since its return in 1859 until the end of Spanish sovereignty over the islands in 1898. The uniqueness of the study lies in the third historiographic current in which this is inserted work: the so-called “history of emotions”, a new theoretical and methodological approach still under development, but in expansion, especially since the turn of the century. The thesis is not focused on the institutional discourse of the Company, but on the particular perception that the workers of the order had of the reimplantation of the corporation in the Philippines and of its subsequent evolution, and especially in the personal and emotional dimension. Thus, given that there is no compilation of the Society of Jesus in the nineteenth-century Philippine Islands, the transit of the order in the islands has been reflected, with its educational work in the Ateneo and the Escuela Normal de Maestros in Manila, its scientific advances in the capital’s Observatory, its missionary deployment on the island of Mindanao and its political position and influence on the Philippine Revolution. But, above all, it has been prioritized the reconstruction of the life experience of those Jesuits in the Philippines and especially of each individual. The foundation of the study is the handwritten correspondence of those nineteenth century Jesuit missionaries, which are preserved in the Historical Archive of the Society of Jesus in Catalonia. Far from the bucolic version offered by the official works of the religious order, the original uncensored letters discover a silenced reality that demystifies the traditional representation of the “perfect Jesuit” and that demonstrates the existence of a heterogeneous, plural, conflictive and riddled community of weaknesses, fears, doubts and thoughts inadequate to his condition, completely affected by the hard life in the missions.

Our purpose was to deconstruct the static and bipolar conception that has underlain cultural approaches along the years. The framework for this study was based on the documentation produced by Company of Jesus missionaries, official authorities from XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries and several fields of knowledge such as Anthropology, Archeology and Linguistics. Throughout our investigation, we focused on ethnical conflicts between the Cocama and other peoples from Ucayali and Huallaga, missionaries and colonizers. We also studied the communication process between the ethnics and the Jesuits, the alliances established between ethnics, colonization agents and missionaries, and finally, the influence and consequences of European contact to that indigenous nation. We found out that the fair relationship shared by the Indians and missionaries resulted from a number of cultural adjustments and concessions on both sides that allowed not only the Indians to remain in the reduction system, but also guaranteed the continuance of the missionary project with the cocamas. Considering the above, we realized that, during the history of contacts between the Cocama and Jesuits, the former can t be said to have been passive before the Spanish s desire of spiritual conquest. Otherwise, the Indians proposed negotiations and alliances that would favor them. These factors evidenced that missionaries had also met the Indians expectations, resulting in a relationship that held as priority social interchange and mobility within the context of Jesuits missions

In this way, initially, the beddings of the named Counter-Reformation and the vigilance devices that it put in scene were rescued, in order to offer to the reader the historical conditionings that run through the activity of the ignatians in the period. After that, it is resorted the named theological-political beddings of the Jesuit proceeding way . In such a way, it is pointed the conversion trajectory of the founder of the Order, Ignacio de Loyola, the foundation bull of the Society of Jesus, the text of the Spiritual Exercises and the historical fundamentation of the practices of Jesuit correspondence production. Thus, this research points out the production of such documents at their times. However, the axis of the thesis is presented from Chapter III, when the jesuit activity at the Colony is discussed through a little explored documentation, researched at the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu in Rome, allowing to the reader knowing the practical of the ignatians in the Province of Brazil. Such practice, in my opinion, was permeated by conflicts and negotiations that were established among the priests, the natives, the colonists and the direction of the Order in Rome. Therefore, speaking about the place of the Jesuit in the colonial society, it becomes necessary to discuss such conflicts and negotiations. Thus, the research detaches the place so contested by Rome and the colonial society of the Jesuit as administrator of the villages. In my opinion, the origin of the conflicts is in the involvement of the priests in secular questions , principally in the treatment with the natives in the villages. The intention here, however, was to instigate the reader to a new perspective related to the performance of the Jesuits in the Colony, basically because the source researched in this thesis is, to a great extent, unknown and of difficult access for the Brazilian researchers. Without presenting finished conclusions, the current research wanted to establish a few more questions about who was and what motivated the men of black who lived at the land of the parrots in the beginning of our settling

Abstract: During their first years after they had come back to Brazil, the Jesuits set up their order first in Desterro, the capital of Santa Catarina, where they founded a school which worked until mid-1855. In 1867, besides the creation of the second school in that city, the order got the permission to open two other establishments: the first one in Itu ¿ Colégio São Luís, that is still working but now in the capital of São Paulo ¿ and another one in Recife, São Francisco Xavier, that closed in 1874. The main purpose of this thesis is to relate and to make explicit the Jesuits¿ settlement experiences during the Empire (between 1840s and 1870s), highlighting the difficulties faced by them during that process, the ways they used to defend themselves, and, above all, the polemic created by the return of the religious order, especially in the provinces where the educational institutes were built, e.g. Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Pernambuco. This thesis discusses the history of Ignatians in the Empire (between 1840s and 1870s) as well as linking the discussions which occurred in Brazil with the existing international debate about the Jesuit Order. To this end, besides the examination of the existing bibliography about the Order and about the politics of the Empire at that time, this thesis analyzes a significant set of newspapers which had an expressive broadcast in the provinces mentioned before. This research also explores the debates that happened in important political spaces, in special General and Provincial Assemblies. The aim was to rediscuss the argumentation that supported the debate about the presence of the Jesuits in Brazil and their association with the main political problems faced by the Empire at that moment, for example, foreign immigration, religious freedom, the conflicts between national clergy and ultramontanist clergy and the relation between the monarchal State and the Church
Doutorado
Politica, Memoria e Cidade
Doutora em História

AbstractWhen the Jesuits began to teach mathematics, they adopted the existing European curriculum which included Sacrobosco’s Sphaera.Christoph Clavius, the most influential Jesuit mathematician, published a commentary on the Sphaera in 1570 which was widely used. Its publication also marked a change in publication policy by the Roman Jesuits. As the Jesuits prepared a uniform curriculum for the Society’s schools in the 1580s and 1590s, Clavius offered a comprehensive mathematics curriculum and urged the Society to teach more mathematics and to train more Jesuit mathematicians. But some Jesuit philosophers rejected mathematics as unscientific. The Ratio Studiorum of 1599 included the Sphaera but did not expand Jesuit mathematical education. Jesuits continued to teach the Sphaera and to use Clavius’ commentary until about 1650.

Abstract:
