Abstract:
AbstractContextual theology is a necessity, but it also has limits. This is the thesis of Craig L. Nessan in this article. It is a necessity because of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ and the sacramental nature of Christian life. God is always revealed in particular times and places. Nevertheless, argues Nessan, contextual theology is limited by the consistency of God's character and activity. "While it is vital to pay attention to the particularity of God's revelation within a given context, it is equally necessary to affirm the coherence of God's characteristic way of becoming revealed." Abstract:
AbstractThe Gospels never mention Jesus laughing. Therefore, the inference some make is that if it does not specifically say that he did, then he must not have. Other scholars have argued that it is easy to see humor in the writings about Christ if you look for it (e.g., Buckner, The joy of Jesus, The Canterbury Press, 1993; Trueblood, The humor of Christ, Harper & Row Publishers, 1964; Wirt, Jesus man of joy, Harvest House Publishers, 1999). The goal of the present study is to examine how Christians describe the humorous (or not) behavior of Jesus Christ using the Humorous Behavior Q-Sort

Abstract:
To the religiously minded, few things carry greater importance than a connection to the divine. For centuries, the literature of prophets and the work of gifted artists have served to create a liminal space where man and Maker can meet. The advent of cinema and the creation of the Internet pose unique questions for the artist seeking to lead an audience toward an encounter with God. In a modern world where discretionary time is dominated by on-demand video streaming, the value of understanding cinema and its myriad potential is particularly relevant. As a religious organization, The Church of

Abstract:
This chapter reflects on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's quest for spectacle throughout its existence. Since 1982, Jerold Ottley had asked the First Presidency for the Choir to have its own orchestra. Gordon Hinckley, now president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. favored Ottley's proposal. The result was the Orchestra at Temple Square, an in-house ensemble whose pretenses mirrored the Choir's huge accomplishments. This chapter first considers the Choir's use of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City as part of its international public relations efforts before discussing i
