Abstract:
The aim of this study is to advance the present capability for modelling soot production and thermal radiation from turbulent jet diffusion flames. Turbulent methane / air jet diffusion flames at atmospheric and elevated pressure are studied experimentally to provide data for subsequent model development and validation. Methane is only lightly sooting at atmospheric pressure whereas at elevated pressure the soot yield increases greatly. This allows the creation of an optically thick, highly radiating flame within a laboratory scale rig. Essential flame properties needed for model validation ar

Abstract:
Radial gas turbines engines have established prominence in the field of small turbomachinery because of their simplicity, relatively high performance and installation features. Thus they have been used in a variety of applications such as generator sets, small auxiliary power units (APu), air conditioning of aircraft cabins and hybrid electric vehicles turbines. The current research describes the design, manufacturing, construction and testing a radial type small gas turbine. The aim was to design and build the engine to drive directly a high-speed permanent magnet alternator running at 60000

Abstract:
Competitive pressure and stringent emissions legislation have placed an urgent demand on research to improve our understanding of the gas turbine combustor flow field. Flow through the air admission ports of a combustor plays an essential role in determining the internal flow patterns on which many features of combustor performance depend. This thesis explains how a combination of experimental and computational research has helped improve our understanding, and ability to predict, the flow characteristics of jets entering a combustor. The experiments focused on a simplified generic geometry of

Abstract:
Substantial economic and even safety related gains can be achieved if effective gas turbine performance analysis is attained. During the development phase, analysis can help understand the effect on the various components and on the overall engine performance of the modifications applied. During usage, analysis plays a major role in the assessment of the health status of the engine. Both condition monitoring of operating engines and pass off tests heavily rely on the analysis. In spite of its relevance, accurate performance analysis is still difficult to achieve. A major cause of this is measu

Abstract:
This thesis investigates a novel secondary flow reduction method. The inlet boundary layer to a linear turbine cascade is skewed by injection of air through an upstream slot to oppose regular generated negative stream wise vorticity. Other methods from the pertinent literature are reviewed on a broad basis. Detailed measurements of the flowfield in the Durham Linear Cascade facility have shown that substantial reductions in secondary flows and losses are possible. If the kinetic energy required for the blowing is taken into account by means of an availability analysis, no net gain in loss is a

Abstract:
Gas turbine combustor design represents an ambitious task in numerical and experimental analysis. A significant number of competing criteria must be optimised within specified constraints in order to satisfy legislative and performance requirements. Currently, preliminary combustor flow and heat transfer design procedures, which by necessity involve semi-empirical models, are often restricted in their range of application. The objective of this work is the development of a versatile design tool able to model all conceivable gas turbine combustor types. A network approach provides the foundatio

Abstract:
This thesis discusses several methods that can be used to analyse gas turbines, based on an optimal estimation algorithm called the Kalman Filter. These techniques overcome the difficulties of more 'traditional' analysis methods, which can give misleading results because they do not explicitly consider the possibility of measurement error. An enhancement to the Kalman Filter (the 'Concentrator') is presented, which overcomes the Kalman Filter's tendency to 'smear' the effects of genuine changes in a small number of component changes and/or sensor biasses over the whole set of changes and bias

Vibration modes of a turbocharger blade with aerodynamic profile, with and without a lacing wire, were identified using model blades with simplified geometry. The separation of coupled modes was achieved using ESPI tests. The modes of vibrations of bladed packets were identified. The e

A novel, fast switching, reliable, and economical fluidic gaseous fuel injector system designed for natural gas engines has been developed in this research. The system consists mainly of no-moving-part fluidic devices and piezo-electric controlling interfaces. The geometric parameters of a fluidic device seriously affect its performance. Traditionally, these parameters can only be optimised through "trial and error" exercise. The three-dimensional calculation of unsteady flows is increasingly gaining importance in the prediction of turbomachinery flow problems. A three-dimensional Euler/Navier-Stokes solver incorporating the time-linearized method and the nonlinear harmonic method in the frequency domain has been developed for predicting unsteady turbomachinery flows. In the time-linearized method, the flow is decomposed into a steady part and a harmonic perturbation part. Linearization results in a steady flow equation and a time-linearized perturbation equation.
