Full textThe following Research is carried out under recent studies focused on journalistic analysis of information. The aim is to analyse the portraits of African Presidents in Jeune Afrique l'intelligent magazine between 1990 and 2000. In fact, the" weekly magazine, which informs Africa about the World and the World about Africa since 1960, continues to attract its readership by its richness and diversity of information. While some people are concerned about the accuracy of its information, others are attracted by the portraits of African presidents its pictures and by analytic columns of political events. Taking into consideration the above features, Scholars and Linguists particularly are more concerned by the iconography, phraseology and mechanisms of enunciation used by editorial team of Jeune Afrique l'intelligent. We have tried to answer the following main questions: A) Which are the different discourse resources portraying the African president through the selected issues of Jeune Afrique l'intelligent? B) Are the linguistics theories of textual analysis making easier the identification and the analysis of African presidents' encountered in that magazine? C) Are the stereotypes in the description of African presidents vary according to their ideologies, their years of ruling and the political events occurring in their countries? D) Does the weight of descriptive words and procedures of pragmatics and stylistics approaches produce some effects on presidents and the readers that are aware of the variety of meaning and representations? It is our hope that answers to above questions and the results of analysis as a whole, may allow those who are going to read us to realise not only the linguistics mechanisms used by editors of the magazine but also to appreciate their art of persuasion

Full textA caricature is a drawing which belongs to the journalistic genre of comments functioning as a visual editorial. However, as a semiotic object, it has never received the analytical attention it deserves. The thesis that we are defending supports the idea that caricatures use a particular visual language distinct from other images to relay their message. To illustrate our thesis, we used caricatures published between 2000 and 2010 in the news magazine Jeune Afrique. We started from the hypothesis that these caricatures "say" something about sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in a certain way. According to the questions and objectives of our research, we sought to know the structure of the language of the caricature, the discourse strategies the caricatures employed to convey their message, the thematic issues they addressed and the image of SSA they portrayed. As a semiotic object, the caricature has a tabular syntactic structure composed of five components, namely the iconic figure, the plastic figure, the temporal component, paratexts and speech. The informant (cartoonist) chooses to deposit messages in one or more of these syntactic units while using appropriate and effective discourse strategies to manipulate the cognitive observer to see, know and believe in what he observes. To find the structure of the language of caricatures, we were inspired by several theoretical proposals of Group μ (1992), Töpffer (quoted by Gombrich, 1996), Genette (1987), among others. Several themes emerged, but those on electoral practices, humanitarian aid, civil war, financial corruption and moral portrait of African leaders were used as a sample. So what is the image that the caricatures in J.A. give about SSA - its territory, its people, their situation, and their leaders? Various proposals came forth from the analysis in chapters four to nine. First, it emerged that the caricatures in J.A. tell small tales that are distinct from media stories though they get inspired by them, transpose them and refer to them in order to compose their own stories. We found that each caricature from a given thematic subject chronologically fits into the next even if they are productions of different cartoonists. If the caricatures form small stories in form of plays, we can imagine each caricature as a scene and for that, each caricature characterizes its actors. The cartoonist invents a story and gives figurative and thematic roles to the actors. These actors are Africans and we, the observers, are assigned the role of spectators. In each scene, the cartoonist “takes” our minds in African countries in order to "witness" together with him what "happens" there. However, the socio-economic problems of SSA are presented as “giants” compared to "Africans". Indeed, the visual topological oppositions of visual figures reveal an opposition of differential values thus putting SSA in a position which minimizes and devalues it. The caricatures point out the problems of famine, drought, disease, corruption, war etc. that plague the civilian population. And as the problems require intervention, it happens that this intervention comes from elsewhere rather than from Africa. During this time of suffering for civilians, high civil servants are shown as engaging in financial impunity practices, seems to say the caricatures. African presidents, meanwhile, are portrayed as those that only think of staying in power. Thus, according to the cartoons, they are always focusing on looking for any means by which to remain in power. Cartoonists employ all kinds of discourse strategies to make fun of the african situation. Finally, not just one, but several bleak images of SSA emerge from the caricatures of J.A. Bleak images because a caricature is a tool for critic rather than praise. Yet, these little stories are fictional even if they are inspired by current events as told by the media

Full textThrough an heterogenous corpus out of his thematic and his periodicity, we worked an analysis of content and discourse of Jeune Afrique and Nouvel Afrique Asie, two panafrican news magazine. This analysis is about the headlines on the front page that these news magazine consecrated to Benin, Congo, Cameroon and Ivory Coastin order to determine the evolution of democratic processus engaged in these countries at the beginning of 1990 decade. We suppose that , like in 1960, the four countries'independnce year, theirs leaders took over themselves the revival democratic that these countries live since the beginning of 1990 decade. We ask ourselves about panafrican press place in this processus. In the first part, we relate briefly the history of these countries since the independences until 80 end's years. In te second part, through national and international facts, we show how these countries choose democraty to the detriment of monolithic system. In the third part of the thesis, we analyze the content of headlines on the front page where we establish the discourse of Jeune Afrique and Nouvel Afrique Asie reporters about the countries of reference. This analysis is completed by the studying of a limited nomber of interview. This thesis try to identify the media logics those exist in order to determine the role panafrican press could play in a continent where democratic processus intensify

Full textThis thesis aims at highlighting the salient characteristics of the illegal immigration of young Tunisians in these times of globalization. We propose to examine this phenomenon at the point of its generation and by its actors, The Harraga, (the frontiers burners), across time and space. We describe this new form of mobility which is placed in a migratory context hitherto unseen just before “The Arab Spring” and Ben Ali downfall. We have identified a chronology which is organized around a central point of departure, highlighting the challenges, fears and hopes. We have shown that the migration process can be understood as a long process of maturity that starts with the incubation stage, takes shape and becomes mature and subsequently blossoms in the move to action becoming irreversible. The aforementioned process is carried out in various places of socialization described in the thesis: Cafés, beaches, neighborhoods, interstitial areas of the town. At every stage of these, the process implies inevitably social and spatial issues. This paper therefore puts forward a description and a sociological analysis of migration paths taken by these new avatars of postmodern nomadism, as well as the networks they used, including family and friendly environment. In this regard, is proposed an analysis of these networks and their operation as well as smugglers pictures

Full textTo meet unemployment problem among young peoples in rural area and to promote the increase of the agricultural production, the pstp project initiated in togo by the v. N. Program has settled in rural area in togo young volonteers farmers at agricultural posts. The target is to make out of theses youngs farmers, thank to their agricultural training, real development agents in rural areas and though agricultural production growth mesures by the application of new modern cultural technics. This new strategy launch by the project must help to restrain rural exodus of young peoples, to start the process of the traditional agricultural transformation by producing an effect of training among farmers in rural area. But it must be pointed out today that this project, after years of execution has finally scored unfavourable results. In fact, the failure of development projects is not only due to still application of traditional cultural methods by the farmers. It is also the result of the lack of adequate organisation by project leaders were not able to settle base infrastructure necessary to the life of the young peoples in the project areas. As a result, most of projects fail because they are sociologically ill planned. The relevance of the sociological contribution to projects success is real

Full textCondom use was still low in 1990 in sub-Saharan Africa. One reason put forward by researchers or persons in charge of aids prevention programmes is the "cultural obstacle". This work tries to show the contrary. Its author has set up a project of research-action of aids STDS prevention among youth in Abidjan. He has studied the use of condoms as a practice of prevention and as a new sexual behavior. Its monography is justified if we think of it a particular social fact, unique, which can be studied in detail and as completely as possible. The author described also the object ("sock", as it is nicknamed by young Abidjanians) and the dilemmas it induces in matter of technical use, consumption and symbolic significance. Following some "itineraries" of this object, the author looks at a biographical approach of prevention: condom is acting, in society as well as in individuals’ intimacy. Because it offers another look on sexuality, the sociological approach of the condom can improve our knowledge on sexuality and lead to better strategies of prevention. The more frequent use of condoms change the notion of prevention (the "ethno-prevention" proposed by the author tries to explore this), and may be a factor of social change in the context of the aids epidemic in Africa

Full textBackground: In West Africa, interventions targeting female sex workers (FSW) are crucial to impact on the HIV dynamics. However, the contents and efficacy of these interventions are unclear, and identifying the most at risk FSW in order to adapt these interventions remain challenging, partly because of the limitations of self-reported sexual behaviours. We therefore designed a comprehensive dedicated intervention targeting young female sex workers, and assessed its impact on HIV incidence in Burkina Faso and the reliability of interview data. Methods: From September 2009 to September 2010 we conducted a cross sectional study in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Then HIV-uninfected FSW aged 18-25 years were enrolled in a prospective interventional cohort. The participants were followed quarterly for a maximum of 21 months. The intervention group received a package which combined prevention and care within the same setting, and consisting of peer-led education sessions, psychological support, sexually transmitted infections and HIV care, general routine health care, and reproductive health services. At each visit, behavioural characteristics were collected and HIV, HSV-2 and pregnancy were tested. High-risk behaviour was defined as the first occurrence of any biological event resulting from unsafe sex, including unexpected pregnancy or HSV-2 or T. vaginalis infection. We used random logistic models to assess the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and the residual high risk behaviours during the intervention. We compared the cohort HIV incidence with a Bernoulli modelled expected incidence in the absence of intervention, using data collected at the same time from FSW clients and key parameters from the litterature. Results: We screened 609 FSW including 188 (30.9%) professionals. Their median age was 21 years [IQR, 19-23], and the prevalence of HIV was 10.3% among professionals and 6.5% among non-professionals. Overall, 277 (45.6%) women reported high-risk behaviours (41.2% among professionals and 47.5% among non-professionals), which were driven mainly by non-consistent condom use with regular partners. In multivariable analysis, before the intervention, HIV infection was associated with older age (AOR=1.44; 95%CI: 1.22-1.71), with being married/cohabiting (AOR=2.70; 95%CI: 1.21-6.04), and with T. vaginalis infection (AOR=9.63; 95%CI: 2.93-31.59), while previous HIV testing was associated with a decreased risk (AOR=0.18; 95%CI: 0.08-0.40).The 321 HIV-uninfected FSW enrolled in the cohort completed 409 person-years of follow-up. No participant seroconverted for HIV during the study while the expected modelled number of HIV infections were 5.05 (95%CI, 5.01-5.08) during the same follow-up (409 person-years) or 1.23 infection per 100 person-years (p=0.005). This null incidence was related to a reduction in the number of regular partners and regular clients, and to an increase in consistent condom use with casual clients (AOR =2.19; 95%CI, 1.16-4.14, p=0.01) and with regular clients (AOR=2.18; 95%CI, 1.26-3.76, p=0.005). However, the incidence of residual risk was high, at 26.7/100 person-years (95% CI, 24.1-33.7). The residual risk was higher among FSW living in couple (adjusted odd ratio [AOR] =7.47, 95% CI, 1.70-30.80) and among those for whom sex work was not the main source of income (AOR =5.53, 95% CI, 1.75-16.84). The latter also tended not to report high-risk behaviours during face –to–face interview. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for targeted interventions among young FSW focusing particularly on non-professionals, sexual behaviours with regular partners and regular HIV testing. The ANRS 1222 study intervention package which combined peer-based prevention and care within the same setting markedly reduced HIV incidence among young female sex workers in Burkina Faso, through reduced risky behaviours

Full textThe first part of this study is deveted to a theoretical frame work which consists of the analysis of main concepts and develops the values and the traditional way of life in north africa. There is a focus on the status of the woman in this society marked with arab and musulman traditions thourgh her life from the aerly childhood to marriage. The second part deals with the way of life of immigrants from the maghreb and the relation ship between parents and children within the context of immigration. This takes into account the way of life of young girls between two cultures; french and north africain. In the third part which is mainly pratical, i try to check my hypothesis and analyse the interviews done with young grils to bring out the link between traditional practices related to their native origin in a western frame and the inadapted behaviour of the north african young gilr. My research includes also an image of adolescent girls. This image includes at the same time a bodily diagram and a psychological aspect. Al last, i find it necessary to reserve a chapter to the body of women in islam and arab and muslum traditions

This is due to the dynamics and quality of economic growth, a chronic democracy deficiency, and socio-economic imbalances that threaten the stability and development wihtin the region. The PM must alter their current growth framework into a total factor productivity model, whereby innovation continuously improves, allowing for an endogenous growth regime based on technology progress to take over. After a general introduction, Chapter (II) highlightst the PM’s innovation systems and their effects on employment generation in a principal component analysis, and a panel study of the determinants of economic growth. In chapter (III) and (IV), the effects of the knowledge economy on youth employment are carefully studied though a time series analysis for the MENA region as a panel on one hand and for Tunisia a single case study on the other. Full textNiger, like many other countries in Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa, has a young population and the living arrangements of older people are not high on the list of priority issues for politicians and researchers. However, Niger is one of the poorest countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and the ongoing economic crisis there can have adverse impacts on the welfare and alter the living arrangements of both old and young people. In many African societies like Niger, grandparents traditionally take care of grandchildren, and older people living in households with no younger adult present is not an unusual situation. At present, the living arrangements of the older population and orphans has attracted considerable attention especially in high HIV/AIDS prevalence countries where many younger adults have died. While HIV/AIDS is not yet a major problem in Niger, the proportion of older people who live with grandchildren in the absence of the middle generation (called the “skipped generation”) is nonetheless high – roughly the same level as that observed in some high HIV/AIDS prevalence countries in Africa. Many studies on older people in Sub-Saharan Africa were done in the 1990s, using qualitative approaches or cross-sectional survey data (appropriate longitudinal data generally lacking in Africa). The main topics examined by these studies have tended to be the living arrangements of older people in high HIV/AIDS contexts, and the poverty consequences of those living arrangements. In this study, we use quantitative data to examine the living arrangements of older people in Niger, focusing both on individual and contextual covariates. Census data provide our main source of data, and the large number of observations available allows us to examine a relatively large number of covariates and situations. Logistic regressions estimated with STATA are used to study individual determinants, and HLM (6.0 version) software is used for the multilevel (contextual) analysis. With respect to the determinants of living with no (younger) adult or in a skipped generation household, the results show that socio-demographic status of older people is the most important variable for explaining the large sex differences in living arrangements. Interestingly, married women are more likely to live in such a household, while after the death of a spouse, men instead appear to be disadvantaged. At the contextual level, the results show that the socioeconomic characteristics are the most important factors. Specifically, the risk of living without a younger adult or in a skipped generation household is explained is larger in more urban areas, and smaller in communities that are relatively more impoverished. Insofar as this is the first study to examine the issue in this part of Africa – the Francophone Sahel – no comparative results from nearby countries exist and the generality of our findings have yet to be confirmed. The living arrangements of older people can be measured in various ways, differing by context and availability of data, and a more detailed analysis, for example, of the effects of marital status requires a deep understanding of marriage among older people in the Nigeran context. Given the low prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Niger, the likely causes of the high prevalence of households in which older people live without the presence of a younger adult or in a skipped generation are high levels of adult mortality from other causes and child fostering practices. Unfortunately, information on these factors is largely missing from our data, making it impossible to directly examine their importance. Finally, given the difficulties of studying these issues with existing data, evidence-based policy and programs targeting the elderly must pay more attention to social and economic dimensions, often requiring the fielding of surveys targeting the elderly. Key words: Niger - Older people - living arrangements of older people – intergenerational living arrangement - comparative studies-living with no adult - skipped generation- Africa.
