Full textLiterary theory and statistics may seem far removed from one another, but their combination makes it possible to propose a singular point of view in the field of literature. This research has been conceived in the light of the possibilities offered by such an approach, which is likely to provide a response to a literary curiosity about the extreme contemporaneity observed in France. The object of study is the young adult imaginary literature, which, in France, shows clear-cut degrees of success depending on the origin of its published titles: on the one hand, translated Anglo-American books with exponential popularity; on the other, French books whose most popular representatives are nonetheless far less popular than their contemporaries. And if certain external influencing factors can logically be determined, what about those that may be in action within the text itself? The heart of this research will be to interrogate, detect and even predict these possible textual reasons from a statistical angle, without however ignoring external ones, which will also be examined in order to best measure the weight of the influences at book. In other words, to use the double modality of the title of this research, an objective that can be translated in the form of the following problematization: “Can the successes of young adult imaginary literature in France be, to some extent, explained and predicted on the basis of textual material?”.This approach, at the crossroads of the exact sciences and literary theory, made possible by an analytical approach based on typologies and models conceptualized through a combination of approaches in structuralism, narratology and textometry, aims to measure and verify the characteristics of success external to the text through the prism of statistics; but above all, proposes to examine textual phenomena in a quantifiable form, and detect those at by in action within the fiction itself and to mirror them according to the commercial success that the books have enjoyed

We made a short review of the research in English about this problems. The datas of our own enquiety snow a very low level of reading ability of the pupils educated in special schools for deaf children. Hearing impaired children in normal schools seem to have better results

Full textThe development of public libraries answers a concern for the diffusion of reading. Such a mission of public reading adds further to the conservation of literary works. As cultural equipment, libraries promote some literary values. Their acquisition policies, the librarians advices, lead towards the valorization of some novelistic work and documentaries. Such characteristics induce to analyses the frequenting of libraries as the one of other cultural equipment (museums, theatres, classical music concerts, etc. ). The proximity of young people with the cultural universe of libraries i. E with the choices and values they defend, create the conditions of their entry to these cultural equipment. In the first part one thus shows that family and juvenile cultural resources rise the probability of joining a library. In the second part, the study of the reasons for the renewal of joining leads to qualifying the analysis in terms of cultural resources. Youngsters from the upper social classes leave libraries more than those from middle or lower social classes. There is a limit beyond which the accumulation of cultural resources works against the keeping of library membership. The limits of the cultural resources explicative process leads to studying the frequenting of libraries according to other hypothesis

Full textCausal inferences have been examined during the on-line comprehension process involved in reading expositifs texts in young and old adults, by taking account reading goal and working memory factors. Experimental results suggest that causal inferences are made on-line. Aging effect occurs in time processing during text reading and in verification and recognition tasks. There is no aging effect in inference production. Effect of reading goal occurs slightly in reading and verification times. Finally, results about working memory suggest that this factor is negatively correlated with reading times in general, overall in aging. Results are discussed in relation to mental representation and to reduced processing capacity hypothesis

Full textLearning to read in an alphabetic system requires children to understand that letters (graphemes) in written language correspond to sounds (phonemes) in oral language. To learn these novel associations requires several years of specific instruction. Using some methods early on to prepare children for this seems efficient, where the methods are designed to reinforce the link observed between perceptive and motor abilities during reading and handwriting acquisition. The main goal of this work was to understand the way manual haptic exploration of cursive letters can enhance pseudo-words decoding and handwriting fluidity in letters production in senior kindergarten children. To do so, we compared multisensory trainings involving haptic and visual modalities, in the proposed motor activities around the letters, to visual or haptic unisensory tranings. This work was realised according to two axes: for the first, in senior kindergarten children shown graphemes and phonemes, and for the second, in adults shown a new learning of unseen abstract forms and auditory stimuli. Results reveal that motor activity around letters and abstract forms does not enhance participant's memorisation despite exploratory motions intimately related to their shapes. Nevertheless, we showed in a robust way a more important associative learning of letters and sounds after a visuo-haptic exploration of letters. In addition, this enhancement is not only due to a more sequential exploration induced by the haptic modality but more to the motor activity per se. Haptic modality could be at the origin of a "binding" effect between visual and auditory stimuli. Finally, getting children into the habit of handwriting motion of cursive letters via a haptic exploration (arm robot device), enhances their handwriting fluidity. Demonstration of a static and dynamic model of letters could help children in the acquisition of some motor rules production (as strokes order and kinematics) and in the construction of more complete motor representations of letters. Taken together, results suggest a significant impact of the haptic exploration of letters in acquiring the skills of reading and handwriting and add weight to the suggestion that haptic exploration should be used in training programs designed to prepare children for acquiring these skills

Full textDaniel, François. "Dysfonctionnements de la synergie vergence et accommodation chez les jeunes adultes : impact sur les saccades, la lecture et la cognition." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCB095/document.
Full textQuality of sensory vision, eye movements and cognition have been broached one by one so far. However, recent studies suggest possible interactions between these fields without clarifying the link. On the one hand, vergence/accommodative (V/A) dysfunctions leads to visual symptoms like sore eyes, blurry or double vision but also problems of attention, concentration, and appear to have a negative impact on academic performances. On the other hand, people diagnosed with vergence disorders also show poor coordination of their saccades, which are essential in reading and cognitive demanding activities. The goal of this thesis is to go into this analysis in depth and to propose experimental ways to evidence the links between V/A disorders, control of the saccades and their influence on cognition. In a first part, we studied the impact of typical V/A disorders and the impact of an induced A/V conflict on the performances during the Stroop test, which is a neurological test known for evaluating cognitive executive functions like inhibition, demanding a high attentional deployment and stimulating basic reading skills. Results show that vergence dysfunctions and V/A inducted conflict have a negative influence on the Stroop performances in students, leading to a diminished control of cognitive functions. These results suggest a more parallel interaction between visual and attentional processes instead of a serial model where vision would be a prerequisite to cognition, slowing down the cognitive processes when disturbed. Secondly, we pursue this theory: vergence rehabilitation in subjects diagnosed with vergence disorders permitted an increase of the vergence capacities, showed an improvement on the coordination of the reading saccades and had a positive influence on the cognitive aspect during reading. This work gives new research possibilities at different level: (1) at a theoretical level, it permits to cross fields like neurology, cognitive psychology, eye movements and optometry; (2) at a clinical level, it suggests typical tests for a more efficient screening and opens new perspectives on solutions to rehabilitate people with V/A disorders; (3) at an educational level, it gives clues on how visual functions could affect academic performances

Full textThrough a developmental perspective and in the wake of previous works about the psychogenesis of writing, the research presented in this doctoral dissertation studies the early encounters between the child and the book, mediated by the reading aloud of the adult. The family practices regarding children’s books have been assessed from questionnaires filled out by parents for 165 children. The interactions have been observed for 67 child(ren)/parent(s) dyads on three separate occasions. 75 children have attended monthly reading workshops involving different modes of interaction with the adult reader, from neutral to participatory. The results thus obtained set the average advent of canonical book use around the child’s seventeenth month. The book’s canonical construction phase alters the book status in the eyes of the child, from an object to manipulate to one of support for shared reading. For the parents, the child’s canonical phase has no influence on the status they grant the book, as the majority of parents distinguish clearly reading from playing. The child adapts its mode of communication and its involvement in the activity based on the adult’s degree of participation, from neutral to participatory. Our observations and analyses during the early encounters with the book object have outlined three profiles of children and parents, based on their mode of communication, the status granted to the book, family practices and the involvement in the activity. Carried by the adult, the early encounters between the child and the book appear as necessary steps toward the psychogenesis of writing

Full textIn terms of school reintegration of young people and adults, Brazil set up the educational program named Education for Young People and Adults [Educação de Jovens e Adultos – EJA], while France set up the educational project called Pass degree for the sake of the Access to University Studies [Diplôme d’Accès aux Études Universitaires - DAEU]. Each of these constitutes a complete educational device that composes The National System of Education in relation to others official programs as well as to specific courses, teaching staff and exams based on the degree acquisition. The graduates of both programs have the right to apply for public service. Moreover, in the Brazilian context they can apply for public and private universities and in the French situation they are able to sign up in the institutions that are open to people with a university degree. However, in Brazil the pedagogical training is oriented towards the job market and aims to promote the professional reintegration and the mobility of people, while the pedagogical training in France has as main point the pursuit of the studies by these individuals. In our thesis, we are interested in the teaching of the reading and we seek, by a contrastive perspective, to evaluate the effects of each of these two educational systems on the learning of the written comprehension; we also discuss the effects of the school model in which the readers have made their first learning, particularly, their first readings. Our research method, set up during several study sessions, invites the readers to answer a reading quiz about informative and journalistic texts that were extracted from the internet. To answer our present problematization, we formulate the following questions:(1) How do these readers read?(2) What are the elements of the text that they mobilize?(3) How are these elements taken up in their answers?(4) What are the strategies implemented during the reading? This method and its theoretical foundations are inspired by the work on reading and written comprehension conducted in the LIDILEM laboratory of the University of Grenoble-Alpes in the sense of the studies initiated by Michel DABENE (DABÈNE, FRIER & VISOZ, 1992) and of the works performed by the Brazilian team of research led by Lúcia CHEREM and Rosa NERY on the matrix of questions and the progress of reading. The intersection of these different indicators (part of the mobilized text, appropriation strategy of the text, identification of the argumentative path, value judgments and enunciative polyphony, formulation of the answer) allows us to reconstruct the coherence of the reading path – from the retrieval of the information to the understanding of the textual complexity through argumentation analysis – and to identify the types of reading concerning both the degrees of development and of reading-comprehension process.Furthermore, we ask whether the concern with the reading work in social thought (FREIRE, 1967) influences on the quality of the reading and written comprehension as well as on the quality of the pedagogical training of readers. We elaborate our answers by referring to researchers who, like Paulo Freire and Pierre Bourdieu, thought about the social question. We think, with them, that when reading is meaningful to the reader, the learning work is more motivated and more coherent. The special attention to the online press article, that we take as a basic document for our research, is motivated by this perspective that establishes the dialogue between the social practices of the written and the teaching-learning of the reading and written comprehension

Full textThis PhD thesis in sociology deals with the taste for « manga » (japanese comic books) and manga reading practices in France from the 1970s to the 2010s. Through documents analysis and in-depth interviews with 80 adult readers (born between the 1950s and the 1980s), it aims to shed light on the emergence of manga as a category of printed materials and digitised content, on the expansion of a specific cultural universe around this kind of symbolic goods (festivals, shops, magazines, blogs, etc), and on the constitution, expression and transformation of the interviewees’ reading tastes and habits. A sociohistorical approach distinguishes between different periods and patterns of manga « supply » in France and stresses the solicitations encountered by manga readers in a variety of historical and biographical contexts. Thesesolicitations give form to their reading expectations and include in particular their sociability networks, communication devices, and their uses of a bundle of festivals, gatherings and digital resources. This work takes more broadly into account the historical forms and the various uses of the japanese « media mix » in France (i. e. the links between manga, TV animation series, videogames and various by-products). The appropriations of these sets of solicitations depend onthe cultural tastes and media literacies the interviewees have incorporated through long-time socialisation processes involving their family members, friends and interpersonal ties. Manga reading practices also vary along with historical transformations affecting their material aspects and publishing formats, their distribution networks, the volume and diversity of manga titles, the symbolic and moral frontiers delineating and arranging this area of symbolic production, the types of reviewing and promotional activities performed by publishers, journalists or amateurs. The interviewees’ reading careers vary in intensity, continuity and duration, and are embedded in their biographical trajectories, work-life balances and material living situations. The readers interviewed come in equal parts from upper, middle and popular classes, which allows to investigate the social differences in manga reading preferences and habits, and to draw attention to readers experiencing precarious situations (often neglected within fan studies). The dissertation shows that the cultural habits at stake in reading manga depend on thedegree and modality of integration within the specialized social networks and amateur cultural activities of diverse « manga fandoms ». The readers make up categories of perception, they select, translate and distribute manga versions, and participate in various amateur and fan practices. Thus, they display traces of their appropriations of manga titles (through a fanfiction, a drawing or a blog post) and of their ordinary symbolic struggles regarding manga, while shaping reading solicitations within their peer groups. This thesis studies the constitution and differenciation of their portfolios of manga tastes, the combination and variation of their reading habits, ranging from a variety of participative readings (connecting the manga with their life experiences) to analytical ones (connecting the manga with various bodies or pieces of (knowledge)

Full textIn spite of all the efforts made by editors and public authorities to develop a pluralistic pressshaping up public opinion the readership of French dailies is aging. The decreasing circulation ofprinted newspapers, contemplating discontinuing them altogether is now an option, when onlineedition business models are still not stable. In this economic and political context, we have chosen not to take the usual perspective, which explains why youngsters are such a small part of the readership, and disregarding averagebehaviours, we have focused on young readers of Le Monde, Le Figaro or Libération either on or off line.Based on the reflexive dimension of comprehensive interviews’ qualitative methodology, ourcommunicational approach consisted in an analysis of reading practices centred on the relationshipbetween the respondents and their environment. The portraits technique and the interpretative analysisof the meaning that so-called competent readers gave to their own behaviours led us to identify thatreading the daily press, taken as a cultural activity, is deeply impacted by informational practices basedon interpersonal transmission. This questions the relevance of the various campaigns launched byeditors and public authorities to win over this specific readership

In a first part, we set problem of younth concept and studied the status evolution of child since the eighteenth century. The pluridisciplinary" work isolates factors wich have contributed to the improvement of the child's lot and is essential to understand a problematical linked to youth. The two axes of reflection : press and young people join together in the second part. Publications will nbe studied on two levels : in their constituting, their "thematics", the general way to approaching their readers, this press shows us the prevailing discourses on chilhood. A more precise approach of certains contents determines the publication values, her chilhood's conception. It will be the manifestation of personnal choices on the inside of a general pattern
