Full textAt the intersection of the sociology of migration and the sociology of youth, this thesis attempts to examine the meaning of emigration as envisaged by youth from three neighborhoods in Dakar. While only a small number of them will achieve their collective goal of migration, this thesis aims to explore the social constraints these urban youth face, which shape their aspirations. This work also underlines what divides these juveniles’ worlds as well as what unites them. The migratory portion of this study shows how the spread of common representations of the « North » and the reappropriation of heroic images of migrants varies according to the position currently held by the youth and the one they expect to hold when they return to this social space. By taking into account the place of young people in the social relationships that structure Senegalese society, considering age, sex, and caste, the ethnography of these three socially different areas in Dakar reveals the diversity of hierarchies and the obstacles that youth must overcome in order to become accomplished and succeed (« Tekki »). By analysing the tensions created by the desires of emancipation from social structures and various forms of calls to order they encounter (stigmatization, mystic-religious sanctions, etc.), we can understand the strength of youths’ desire to leave, motivated by the belief that this would allow them temporary reprieve from social relations that hinder their social ascent and permit them to distance themselves geographically in order to rise socially upon returning. Rather than a desire to overturn Senegalese social structures overall, emigration is envisaged as the quickest way to gain a social recognition from dominating groups: the elderly, nobles (geer), and the wealthy. However, only the best equipped economically and in terms of education will manage to leave. For the vast majority remaining, emigration remains « potential » migration (unsettled, deferred, or redefined), maintained as the primary means to self-accomplishment. Finally, this study shows how these young people achieve various fates, which represent more or less successful adjustments of their individual and collective aspirations to take part in key institutions in the Senegalese society

Full textIn Dakar, Senegal, children and young people have taken over abandoned corners of public space. They live by begging, recycling, small shops, but also practices at the limit of legality (theft, consumption of narcotics ...). Commonly referred to as faqman (runaway), these young people leave home or daara (Koranic school) to invest the street. Their appearance, theirbehavior, their activities, but especially the perception that the populations have of them, are worth marginal and stigmatized. Their presence on the street is repressed by the public authorities when humanitarian actors on their side propose to come to their aid for their rehabilitation into society.Qualified as marginals who leave the conventional social frameworks to develop in the street of the "counter-values", faqmans nevertheless continue to share with their fellow citizens the same moral and symbolic universe. By taking an interest in the subjective sense that these young people give to their presence in the street with an ethnography of the experience they make in this space, this thesis proposes an exploration of the figure of the faqman to break with his usual status of victim and deviant

Full textA population-based study about growth and feeding practices was conducted with a cluster sample of 1479 aged 0 to 36 months and their mother, in the urban area of Dakar (Senegal). In this urban area, two socioeconomic contrasted areas were selected : Medina zone, in the center of Dakar and Pikine zone, located at the city's doorstep. This study is organized around an anthropometric survey of healthy children and their mother and an extensive data collection (socioeconomic, socio-demographic, health and biological data). Questionnaires were addressed to the mothers and belong to the quantitative approach of growth and feeding practices among children. The aim of the qualitative approach by focus groups was to shed light on trends revealed by questionnaires analysis. Cross-sectional data extracted from a growth survey were used to determine the variation in the growth parameters due to sex, child's age or place of residence. Some minor differences could be observed between Pikine and Medina. Nutritional status (assessed by new WHO Growth Standards) decline as children are getting older. Among the two areas, malnutrition exists in different form but it's not area specific since the less-favoured area (Pikine) is not more affected by it. Nonetheless, there are common factors associated with malnutrition, which indicate the low economic impact. Birth-weight and maternal body mass index systematically belongs to the same and most explicative statistics models. The role of feeding practices (apprehended by food consumption) is not that important to explain malnutrition

Full textThe city of Dakar, capital of Senegal, offer a particular linguistic situation: to write, there is three possibilitys of languages, and two alphabets: French, Wolof and Arabic; the Latin's alphabet and the Arabic's alphabet. In any time, the writing environment accounts for this fact on the buses driving around the city, on the walls decorated with frescos and graffiti, in the newspapers, and also, on the sign- boards. The choice of one of the languages, or alphabet becomes the sign of an ethnic or religious appurtenance, or the sign of a desire to show that you belong to a social group. The sign-board, is a support of these writing stamps, but also iconic stamps, so, this research will be based on this sign in order to prove that it is one of the tell-tale of the social organization of the districts of Dakar. This work will permit to "read" the city, but also, to understand more, the values of each language
