Iqbal, Fareeha Yasmin 1974. "The role of large-scale government-supported research institutions in development : lessons from Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) for developing countries." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/30025.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2003.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 83-89).
This thesis seeks to examine the extent of the role that the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) played in Taiwan's high-technological development and whether developing countries of today can promote such development by creating similar institutional arrangements. Literature on innovation systems was reviewed, particularly national innovation systems and the role of R&D institutions within these. Taiwan's recent economic success, deemed attributable to economic and institutional reforms in recent decades, was also studied. In depth analysis was carried out of its leading high-technological research institute, ITRI, which bridges the gap between industry and academia. Although the case of Taiwan is sometimes presented as a unique example of industrial success of an SME-based state, this thesis argues that this success was possible because the research and development process had a large institute at its core. One way of creating such a research scale is by merging existing institutes, a process that would result in more efficient use of capital and human resources. The case of high-technological development in Pakistan is briefly assessed in order to gauge how its existing institutions structure could be amended to allow such changes to be made. The study concludes with the following three main points: (i) scale is an important factor: Taiwan's SME-based industry was able to succeed because of a large research institute at its core; (ii) in developing countries, governments decide which form of high-technology to pursue and when; thus, timing and choice of sector are important; and (iii) political leadership was seen to be important in the case of Taiwan's development in high-technology, and can play a key role in developing countries of today.
by Fareeha Yasmin Iqbal.
M.C.P.

Abstract:
This chapter tells the story of Vivien Ji, the founder of Lifeblooms. Vivien's calling is to awaken one million Chinese women to change their own lives with radical self-love. In the last five years, Vivien Ji has served nearly 5,000 Chinese women to help them start the journey of self-love, despite coming from a traditional culture where a woman's role in society and family is more or less sacrificial. She has created a holistic detox wellness retreat program, called Lifeblooms, to teach women how to fall madly in love with themselves physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually so that every woman can take back her power and bloom into her authentically beautiful self. Vivien and her business partner initiated virtual workshops with many female community leaders, who care about women's well-being, growth, and leadership to collaboratively promote this feminine energy revival movement in China.

Abstract:
The Yugyō school’s seventeenth-century ambition was to amalgamate the existing jishū groups under their own umbrella as Ji-shū, Ji-sect. This had historiographical consequences, leading to a distorted view of the history of jishū. Preferences to sectarian-based scholarship and studies focused on the founders have contributed to the neglect of women and silencing their important roles in these religious groups. This study has attempted to amend this distortion and shed light on women’s active participation.

Abstract:
Both The Bronx Is Next and Sister Son/ji are plays by Sonia Sanchez that focus on how acts of rioting oppress Black women and the poor in specific ways. She challenges chauvinistic impulses in Bronx of Black male revolutionaries who incite violence throughout the drama; while Sister Son/ji centers a Black woman’s voice to question the efficacy of Black rage as a productive means of safeguarding Black humanity. Together, both plays challenge riots and revolts as exercises of Black liberation. Sanchez’s investment in representations of rage center the divisive and destructive capacities of Black rebellion that reemphasize the dehumanizing nature systemic racism engenders. Ultimately, Sanchez draws attention to the Black Power Movement’s fractures in both dramatic works that interrogates gender, race, and class and details the contradictory and polarizing views that emerged from Black America trying to achieve liberation.
