Abstract:
In tracing the experience of Chinese Canadians in the 20th Century, we need to look further back into its history. Most people believe that the increasing number of immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China in the 1980s and 1990s played the most important roles in the social and economic changes during the latest decades of the 20th Century. The contribution of the Chinese Canadians settlement throughout the 20th Century should also be considered as it marks the beginning of the rise of their social status and identity in Canada. Although the Chinese Canadians earned their fame and status since the 1980s, they had been racially discriminated for more than a century. To probe into the situation, the social and political situations in the Chinese Canadian community will be meticulously analyzed and their contribution in difference aspects examined. In addition, other minority ethnic groups, such as the Japanese, Jewish and Indian, will be used as a comparison to demonstrate the change of policies towards the Chinese in Canada. In doing so, both English and Canadian Chinese newspapers will be used to illustrate the cultural difference between the “whites” and “non-whites”. To illustrate the changes, the 20th Century will be break into three parts. In most of the pre-Second World War period, the Chinese community was isolated from the mainstream community with their activities largely confined to Chinatowns in cities, such as Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto and so on. For the Chinese living in small townships, such as Prince Rupert, Richmond and so on, their daily life will also be examined. When Canada declared war on Japan on 7th December 1941, Canada became an ally of China during the war. A sentiment of acceptance of the Chinese in the mainstream society began to take shape. Some of the Chinese chose to contribute their efforts to Canada by joining the Canadian Armed Forces and went into battle alongside the White Canadians. After the Second World War, Canada adopted a new policy towards the minority ethnic groups and Chinese Canadians started to enjoy political equality. In May 1947, the Canadian Government repealed the Chinese Immigration Act. In 1967, after the liberalization of the Canadian immigration policy, the Chinese, once again, were allowed to immigrate freely to Canada as an individual. With granted full citizenship, the Chinese social and political status began to change. In 1957, Douglas Jung, a Canadian born Chinese, was elected a Member of the Parliament, which can be seen as the beginning of the Chinese involvement in the political arena of the Canadian community. Since then, Chinese Canadians were able to achieve equality in the society. Based on documentary accounts and oral history research, this thesis re-constructed the history of Canadian Chinese involvement in the 20th Century and the change of their identity and social status thereafter.

Abstract:
This research investigated Chinese as second language (CSL) learner’s willingness to communicate (WTC) both inside and outside classroom in one of international schools, Hong Kong. The research objects are 170 Chinese Language B learners from an English School Foundation (ESF) international school. The main methodology adopted here was quantitative method. Classroom observations by researcher and self-reports by students were firstly done to collect background data, and then five scales were employed to do the main investigation, including a WTC Inside–the-classroom Scales (WTCIS), a WTC Outside-the-classroom Scale (WTCOS), a Language Anxiety Scale (LAS), a Motivation Scale (MS) and a Self-perceived Communicative Competence Scale (SCCS). The research objectives were to explore the general situation of CSL learners’ WTC, and the specific characteristics as well as possible differences of their WTC inside and outside the classroom; then to further examine the possible affecting variables from both background and psychological perspectives including gender, age, Chinese language proficiency, mother tongue, social support, personality and attitudes towards learning Chinese, which were regarded as background variables, and language anxiety, motivation and self-perceived communicative competence, which were regarded as psychological variables. After that, data was processed and analyzed by SPSS 19.0 for hypothesis verification. Finally, pedagogical implications on how to improve CSL learners’ WTC both inside and outside classroom were generalized from the study. The major findings showed that: (1) the general WTC of CSL learners from this school were slightly on the low side, between the Lower and Middle level, and the WTC inside the classroom was comparatively higher than outside of classroom. (2) On overall WTC, there was no significant difference between male and female students. But inside the classroom, girls were more likely to ask questions and pay more attention on language details than boys, while boy were more active to be the presenters and voice out in public. Outside the classroom, boys were more willing to communicate with strangers or chat online with friends in Chinese. (3) No significant WTC difference was found between Diploma Program (DP) and Middle Years Program (MYP), but DP CSL learners showed more willingness to make public speech, to be more of an inquirer in problems, and to do more generalization in speaking. (4) Among DP group, significant positive correlation was found between language proficiency and WTC, suggesting that the more proficient CSL learners showed higher WTC, and vice versa. (5) The more proficient group were more willing to speak Chinese voluntarily than the less proficient ones, implying that the more competent language learners are more likely to the take the initiative in communication. (6) CSL learners with more social supports to learn Chinese showed higher WTC, and a significant positive correlation was found here. (7) Students with Cantonese as mother tongue had higher WTC than their English as mothertougue counterparts, and this difference was more obviously outside of classroom. (8) Extroverted students showed significantly higher WTC inside of the classroom than the introverted. (9) Students who liked learning Chinese demonstrated higher WTC than those who didn’t. (10) Students’ motivation to learn Chinese and their SPCC were both on the high side, and both correlated positively on WTC, with motivation correlated more closely on outside WTC while SPCC more on inside WTC. Students showed slight lower anxiety level in speaking Chinese. Anxiety had significant negative correlation with WTC, and it mattered more inside than outside of classroom. No matter for WTC inside or outside, SPCC was the most predictive variable among the three.

“Fei Ge”was produced by a professor of “Centrol Conservatory Of Music”named “Tang,Jian-Ping”in 2002. It was also created because of the commission of an Asian band grouped by China, Japan and Korean. The melody of “Fei Ge”is touching and highly danceable, listenable and spreadable. Furthermore, this tune is rich in intense Yunnan characteristics and contains the traditional feature of minority’s music culture. Nevertheless, it is composed through contemporary technique, which prompts writer to conduct further study regarding this research agenda. Through a broad range of literature, Tang,Jian-Ping’s background, learning experiences, the concept of creation and artistic connotation could be understood thoroughly. In addition to that, in terms of “Miao Fei Ge”as well as “A Xi Tiao Yue”, their historical and cultural backgrounds can also be profoundly comprehended. Moreover, with regard to the section of “Yizu Haicai Qiang”which is mentioned in the current tune analysis of “Fei Ge”, author discovered that it is different from the composer’s original recognition. Hence, the author will elaborate and clarify those unclear statements in this essay. The tune analysis provides a myriad of understanding regarding the allocation of full song passage, the application of music materials, the use of harmony and interval as well as the rhythm arrangement. Based on the results of rational and objective dissection, Hopefully, this paper will benefit the flautists and composers who are interested in this tune. In addition, this study could be an effective reference for future research ,and make a tremendous contribution to academic area.

Zeng-Ding-Han-Fei-Tzu-Jiao-Shih and Han-Fei-Tzu- Sin-Jiao-Jhu were often used to research Han-Fei-Tzu. They were important research results in the 20th century. CHEN,CI-TIAN mentioned in the preface. He thought CHEN,CI-YOU quoted his own results, but CHEN,CI-YOU did not make a note. CHEN,CI-TIAN’s suspicions come from 1. CHEN,CI-YOU used CHEN,CI-TIAN’s personal literature. 2. They have exactly the same conclusion. 3. They used almost identical Japanese literature. CHEN,CI-TIAN originally targeted CHEN,CI-YOU’s original(Han-Fei-Tzu-Ji- Shih), but these questions can still be seen in Han-Fei-Tzu- Sin-Jiao-Jhu. This article is written to solve CHEN,CI-TIAN’s questions and I tried to analyze the respective characteristics of their books. This article is based on comparative method. I discussed from the four parts. 1. I started to understand the background of the two researchers and books. The discussion is included the purpose of writing a book and book’s revision process. Try to use time factors to prove the answer. 2. The appendix of the two books is highly same. They even copy the same mistakes. I try to compare them to find the inside story. 3. I first data their references. Hope to get their habits and problems. And then to analyze the characteristics of their collation and annotation. 4. According to the existing information to understand their thinking of the situation. The purpose is to have a more comprehensive analysis of two books. I hope that through this article can get a reasonable answer to solve CHEN,CI-TIAN’s problem. However, I do not want this answer to make people despise the results of a book. CHEN,CI-TIAN and CHEN,CI-YOU have spent a lot of time to study Han-Fei-Tzu. Their research must be fruitful. Because of my poor knowledge, I only use simple research methods. I hope that through this article can analyze the value of these books

Peigang was a famous port of Taiwan strait during the 16th and 17th century. The development of humanities and literature grew richly at that time. There was a great school for young students named “Ju-Kui School” which was built by Chin-Ling Tsui and Chin-Hui Tsui in Peigang in 19th Dao-Guang Year of Ching Dynasty. They had best teachers, and cultivated the most top students among the entire county. Therefore the literature was highly developed in Peigang. But it was getting difficult to maintain the literature development after the time of Ju-Kui School. When Japanese governed Taiwan and set the policy to destroy the Chinese culture, the teachers and students of Ju-Kui School found out the Japanese’s scheme and tried to find a path to maintain the Chinese culture by setting the poets club and teaching Chinese poems. Such as the Fen-Si Poets Club set by Ran-Biao Tsui, the Ku-Yin Poets Club set by Wei-Chao Lin, and the Fen-Jin Poets Club set by Si-Jean Zeng. Tong-Yeh Wong was the chairman of Fen-Jin Poets Club who was taught by Ben-Sen Tsui and Ran-Biao Tsui, the member, Dai-Chuan Hong was taught by Wei-Chao Lin, and they all came from the Ju-Kui School. It showed how close the connection was between the Fen-Jin Poets Club and the Ju-Kui School. In 11th Da-Zheng year (1922 AD), Si-Jean Zeng suggested to set the Fen-Jin Poets Club for the rich development of literature in Peigang. During the period of Japanese government in Taiwan, the purpose to devote to maintain the Chinese culture was accomplished through the literature activities and poems of the Poets Club. Fen-Jin Poets Club was the seed of the traditional poets club in Yunlin during the time under the Japanese government. And the seed grew by the movement of club members which deeply infected other areas such as Sihu, Shuilin, Yunchangand Huwei in Yunlin county. The development of Poets Club enriched the literature atmosphere in Yunlin county. The Club’s poems about the hometown described many perspectives of local history and reveal the society of old Peigang during the time of Japanese government. It took from the tradition and reveal the modern, and showed great importance across generations of Chinese poems . The research is focused on the Fen-Jin Poets Club in Peigang, and the structure of article is designed into six chapters. The 1stchapter is about the motivate and purpose of the research. The 2ndchapter is about the development of Fen-Jin Poets Club, and to discuss the origin, the changes and the development of Yunlin Poets Clubs. The 3rdchapter is about the founding and developing of Fen-Jin Poets Club, to reveal the faces and meanings of the Poets Club activities across areas. The 4thchapter is the analysis of important poets and society. The objects are the eight famous poets who were known as the “8 companions of poem time” and also the other new joiners. This chapter is about the biography of the poets, focused on their work of important poets from different generations. It tells the features of each poet with rich Chinese culture capacity from many works. The 5th chapter gathered all works from different generations and to generalize the topic and features from the forms, types, and language of Fen-Jin poems. The 6thchapter is to summarize the other five chapters and to confirm the effects on Peigang area, the contributions on the history of Yunlin literature, and the position on the history of Taiwan literature.

“Zhuang-zi’s Trial on His Wife” was a relatively antique story that has been passed down for countless generations without suffering from decrepitude. Scriptwriters from past generations kept adapting the story, and contemporary scriptwriters also infused it with lots of modern awareness and viewpoints. Therefore, trace of how times evolved and how ideas made progress could be understood through these scripts. This thesis is intended as an investigation of the development of the story,“Zhuang-zi’s Trial on His Wife”, at that period of time. First, the story itself, variations, and development of the story are studied, followed by four scripts adapted by Si Song, Wei Zih-Yun, Wu Jhao-Fen, and Gao Sing-Jian. Detailed analysis of these scripts is conducted respectively; at last, the scripts are compared and inducted to manifest their individual features. In “A Butterfly Dream” by Si Song, Zhuang-zi and four women constructed the backbone of the story, infused with part of reality of the contemporary society; the entire play presented a relaxing and funny style; concerning “A Newly-adapted Butterfly Dream” by Wei Zih-Yun, the arrangement of several specific dreamlands in the story were prominent plots, it also carried a number of philosophic concepts in “Zhuang-zi”. It was the life perspective of the adapter that made the plots an happy ending of great reunion; regarding “A Butterfly Dream” by Wu Jhao-Fen, a brand new style appeared due to innovative conception, reshaped characters, and script adaptation; As for “The Nether World” by Gao Sing-Jian, lots of its content were miniatures of the real world, making the play obscure and murky. If we compare these various versions in terms of “the motives of the trial on his wife”, “core characters”, “key plots” and “meanings conveyed”, it could be inferred that various motives caused the scripts to have different development; meanwhile, they also allowed the scripts to present diverse thinking while meanings were being conveyed. In addition, contemporary scriptwriters could make use of the content of “Zhuang-zi” and adapted it for new plots, equipping new scripts with both inheritance and innovation; thereby further exhibited various features of respective scripts.

This study explored the works of four contemporary Taiwanese female writers, Hsiao-Hung Chang, Yu-Fen Ko, Hwei-Ching Chang, and Wen-Jiuan Wang, to show how they have gone beyond the lyric tradition of prose writing. The works of these writers focus on a metropolitan perspective, with a scholarly quality that has an international vision and academic way of thinking and training. Their keen observations enable them to turn seemingly ordinary people in modern urban life into interesting subjects. Thinking profoundly, they express their concern over various aspects of city life and draw out the social implications of seemingly ordinary city landscapes. To understand how these writers represent the various spaces of a house, this study examines each room in turn. After a thorough exploration of the house, the external spaces of the city are also examined to understand the relationships among people, houses and the city. Looking at various objects indoors or outdoors, from inside to outside, from small to large ones presents a micro view of the small items in a house and a macro view of big ones in a city, and suggests that a small space in a city is equivalent to my big room. In sum, the works examined in this paper are more of a microfilm of society evolved from the particulars of people to the universals of community, representing the isolation and alienation of city-dwellers in modern civilization, an issue that deserves research and discussion in the context of today’s social culture.

"The structure of ownership in family firms." Thesis, 2010. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6075291.

Full text
Abstract:
Prior literature focuses on the causes and effects of ownership concentration between significant blockholders and minority shareholders. Anecdotal evidence shows that it is also important to look at the causes and effects of ownership concentration within controlling families as family ownership can become diffused after generations. Family trust is a popular vehicle for holding family ownership. It allows a founder to concentrate firm ownership on a long-term basis, preventing control loss after he/she steps down. Family members can enjoy control benefits such as preservation of their family intangible assets. However, there is tradeoff. Family members cannot resolve their conflicts by acquiring and selling off shares among them, since they are no longer the legal owners of the shares.
Using a sample of 216 family firms listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with time series data spanning 1990--2008, I investigate the causes and effects of ownership concentration by means of family trust. I fmd that when family control is important (when there exists a large amount of family intangibles), there is a higher propensity that family trust is used to concentrate ownership and secure control, provided that the cost of using it is low (small family size hence low family conflict). However, when there are more and more family members after generations, the benefit of preserving the intangibles may not be high enough to cover the cost of potential family conflict, leading to firm value loss. Moreover, the cost of using trust magnifies during difficult periods such as financial distress, economic downturn and leadership succession. Hence, firms with high potential family conflict have poorer performance during difficult time if family trust is used for holding the firm's controlling stake. Family trust also induces common pool problem. Family members tend to extract resources from the family firm as much and as early as possible, leading to higher payout and slower firm growth.
