Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe jíbaro—the emblematic figure of Puerto Rico—has long been at the center of the archipelago's political and professional discussions. Building on the work of scholars who have traced the jíbaro's history, this article complicates the tension between the politically nationalistic definition of humble jíbaros working in the countryside and scientific observations of jíbaros within the confines of the criminal-legal system. By the mid twentieth century, mainstream understandings of jíbaros were increasingly fashioned by psychiatry, social science, and social work, all of which connected jíbaros to other rural identities. These projections of the jíbaro powerfully materialized in Puerto Rico's premier biosocial laboratory, the Insular Penitentiary at Río Piedras (popularly known as Oso Blanco). An analysis of the work of penitentiary psychiatrists and social health professionals with prison inmates reveals a more complex, troubling image of redeemable Puerto Rican men with rural roots and sensibilities than the idyllic representations of jíbaros circulating at the time suggest. Oso Blanco health practitioners pathologized the jíbaro to identify and mend his perceived psychosocial shortcomings, and to diminish any defiance he harbored. In so doing, they reinforced the notion that jíbaros were racialized living artifacts central to colonial-populist designs and constituency-building.

En este primero de dos artículos, el autor pone en tela de juicio la semisimbolización establecida por C.Lévi-Strauss entre la alfarera y los celos a partir de un corpus de variantes míticas tomadas a la etnia Jíbara. Reproduciendo los textos completos de los resúmenes utilizados por el antropólogo francés, y de otras variantes más que amplían el corpus original por medio del análisis semio-lingüístico del discurso etnoliterario, se logra demostrar el desplazamiento nocional de un motivo a otro que sufre dicho estudio,todo con el fin de precisar la interpretación semántica de los textos. El artículo complementario estará dedicado a examinar las versiones correspondientes al origen de la actividad alfarera entre los Jíbaros, discutiéndose entonces los alcances de los acercamientos antropológico y semiótico en la determinación del sentido cuando se trata de conocer la etnoliteratura alejada de la cosmovisión occidental.

ABSTRACTThe modern Jivaroan languages and the reconstructed proto language have all been assigned a velar nasal phoneme /ŋ/ by previous analysts. In this paper I argue that such an analysis is incorrect, and propose that the velar nasals in surface forms come from two sources. The first is assimilation of an underlying unspecified syllable-final nasal archiphoneme /N/ to a following velar stop /k/. The second concerns a group of velar nasals that surface only in Aguaruna and arise as a syllable-final allophone of the phoneme /h/. I also propose to reconstruct a rhotic phoneme for the proto language rather than a velar nasal, and show that it has merged with /h/ in Aguaruna. Historical, comparative and documentary evidence is adduced to support these hypotheses.KEYWORDS: Jivaroan; phonology; reconstruction. RESUMENEstudiosos anteriores consideraron el fonema nasal velar /ŋ/ como parte tanto de las lenguas jíbaras actuales como de la proto lengua reconstruida. En este artículo, argumento que esos análisis están incorrectos; propongo, por el contrario, que la nasal velar en la estructura superficial tiene dos orígenes. El primero se relaciona con la asimilación del arquifonema nasal no especificado en final de sílaba a la consonante oclusiva velar /k/. El segundo se relaciona con un grupo de consonantes nasales velares que se manifiestan solamente en la lengua aguaruna, concretizándose como alófono, en sílaba final, del fonema /h/. También propongo reconstruir un fonema rótico para la proto lengua y no una nasal velar. Muestro, asimismo, que el rótico se fusionó con /h/ en aguaruna. Recurro a evidencias de tipo histórico, comparativo y documental para corroborar estas hipótesis.PALABRAS-CLAVE: Jíbaro; Fonología; Reconstrucción.

Indaga y analiza los fundamentos de contenidos y requisitos que maneja un negociador clásico, y que responden a un contexto y a un pensamiento determinado de un contexto cultural en particular. Determina que en los contextos de conflictos donde se encuentran inmersos los Awajún, un negociador clásico debe incorporar las características culturales más relevantes al momento de manejar sus conflictos.

Improvisation is regarded as the most sublime element in the jíbaro folk music tradition of Puerto Rico. This tradition originated by the jíbaro, the simple rural farmer of Puerto Rico's heartland, involves the complicated art of improvising in décima, a ten-line poetic form, as well as improvisation of melodic lines played on the cuatro, a small guitar-like instrument. Since jíbaro improvisation is an art that is transmitted orally and involves a seemingly spontaneous act, it might seem odd to talk about a theory of improvisation within this style of music. My ethnographic research however has revealed that improvisation in jíbaro music is actually a highly structured performance practice and involves an informal theory that is based on the knowledge of archetypal patterns that generate and organize jíbaro improvisations.Recent theories of music which establish parallels between music, language, and cognition (Lerdhal and Jackendoff; Clarke; Gjerdingen) have lead me to believe that improvisation in jíbaro music is generated by the combination of archetypal patterns that create a musical syntax. These patterns are stored in minds of jíbaro performers as cognitive schemas. My study is also based on the work of Puerto Rican scholars Luis M. Alvarez and Angel Quintero who have identified African rhythmic patterns as the generative musical source in many styles of Puerto Rican folk music. By combining theories of music and ethnographic methods, this paper will provide a greater understanding of orally transmitted cultural expressions, which utilize improvisation, as well as give insight to the cognitive processes that shape this performance practice.

Abstract:
In the three decades surrounding the Spanish-American war (1880-1910), three prominent Puerto Rican artists, Francisco Oller (1833-1917), Manuel E. Jordan (1853-1919), and Ramón Frade (1875-1954) created a group of paintings depicting "el jíbaro," the rural Puerto Rican farm worker, in a way that can be appropriately labeled "nationalistic." Using a set of motifs involving clothes, customs, domestic architecture and agricultural practices unique to rural Puerto Rico, they contributed to the imagination of a communal identity for creoles at the turn of the century. ("Creole" here refers to individuals of Spanish heritage, born on the island of Puerto Rico.) This set of shared symbols provided a visual dimension to the aspirational nationalism that had been growing within the creole community since the mid- 1800s. This creollismo mythified the agrarian laborer as a prototypical icon of Puerto Rican identity. By identifying themselves as jíbaros, Puerto Rican creoles used jíbaro self-fashioning as a way to define their community as unique vis a vis the colonial metropolis (first Spain, later the United States). In this thesis, I will examine works by Oller, Jordan and Frade which employ jíbaro motifs to engage this creollismo. They do so by painting the jíbaro himself, his culture and surroundings, the fields in which he worked, and the bohío hut which was his home. Together, these paintings form a body of jíbaro imagery which I will contextualize, taking into account both the historical circumstances of jíbaro life, as well as the ways in which signifiers of jibarismo began to gain resonance amongst creoles who did not strictly belong to the jíbaro class. The resulting study demonstrates the importance of the mythified jíbaro figure to the project of imagining Puerto Rican creole society as a nation, and the extent to which visual culture participated in this creative process.

En el marco del proceso de autodeterminación de ‘territorios integrales indígenas’ impulsado por la Coordinadora Regional de losPueblos Indígenas (CORPI), las organizaciones awajún y wampishan venido definiendo sus territorios en una serie de encuentros intra e interétnicos, objetivando de esta manera la relación que estospueblos, considerados como unidades sociopolíticas, mantienen consus respectivos espacios geográficos. En ese sentido, este proceso de autonomización indígena interactúa con los modelos y las instituciones políticas del Estado. En el presente artículo, a partir denuestra participación en la realización de informes antropológicos destinados a sustentar la demanda de reconocimiento de ‘territorios integrales’, intentaremos describir y analizar las dinámicas de autonomía local, alianzas supralocales y fronteras interétnicas que caracterizan la territorialidad de los awajún y wampis y cómo tales dinámicas se movilizan frente a la presión cada vez más constantede la sociedad nacional y el capitalismo global.
In the framework of the self-determination process of ‘indigenous integral territories’ led by the Coordinadora Regional de los Pueblos Indígenas (CORPI), the Awajún and Wampis organizations have been defining their territories in a series of intra- and inter-ethnic meetings, objectifying their relationship with their respective geographic areas. In this sense, such process of indigenous autonomization interacts with State models and political institutions. In this paper,on the basis of our participation in anthropological reports to support the demand for recognition of ‘integral territories’, we try todescribe and analyze the dynamics of local autonomy, supra-local alliances and inter-ethnic borders among the Awajún and Wampis and how such dynamics have mobilized them facing the increasing pressure by the national society and global capitalism.
