Abstract:
This article examines Sean O’Casey and Yu Ch’i-jin’s portrayal of the domestic realm in the Dublin Trilogy of the 1920s and Nongchon Trilogy of the 1930s, respectively. Yu is indebted to O’Casey for his themes and style in playwrighting, for he saw O’Casey’s works as models for his own dramatic depictions of colonial Korea. A close study of Yu’s approach and the two trilogies reveal that his “deep-rooted admiration” for O’Casey does not indicate Yu’s aims to Westernize Korean theatre, but rather reveals his desire to impact the Korean audiences with realistic depictions of their everyday struggles. Using Lionnet and Shih’s idea of “minor transnationalism,” I argue that this lateral relationship is an instance of transcolonial solidarity in which Yu echoes O’Casey’s methodology to contribute to establishing a national theatre and drama tradition as did O’Casey to the Abbey Theatre.

Abstract:
Abstract The genre of modern drama was established in Korea primarily during Japan’s occupation (1910–1945), by playwrights such as Yu Ch’i-jin who sought to represent Korean nationhood on stage. Yu was especially influenced by Irish playwrights, due to the parallels he recognized in the two colonial nations. Moreover, he was also concerned with the genre of modern drama on the global scale, as he agreed with his contemporaries that Korean literature must become interconnected with world literature. As a colonial writer, Yu wrote and staged Korean national drama that was inspired by Irish national drama, which he studied alongside other foreign – mostly European – literary traditions while studying in Japan. Françoise Lionnet’s concept of transcolonialism, a spatial approach to understanding the network of colonial literatures, will be used to analyze the complex set of influences on Yu’s writings.

Abstract:
The article shows the history of the heyday and decline of the four highest clans of the Southern Chinese Eastern Jin dynasty (Wang, Xie, Yu and Huan clans), which alternately with varying degrees of success acted as the second most powerful clan in the entire Eastern Jin Empire when the central power ceased to be a self-sufficient force and badly needed the support of noble clans (strong houses). The purpose of the study is to identify the main factors of the political longevity of the highest clans of the period under review. The methodology of this study includes the method of prosopographic and historical-genetic analysis of the four highest clans of the Eastern Jin era, between which there was a continuous and merciless political struggle for the highest civil and military posts in the Eastern Jin Empire. The perspective of clan issues and inter-clan relations in Jin history lies in the possibility of a detailed reconstruction of the specific historical context of the most important events in the history of China in the 4th‒5th centuries AD and will contribute to the development of elitology of early medieval China. As a result of the analysis of the history of the development of the four clans, it was concluded that the Wang clan achieved the greatest success during the Eastern Jin period, which was able to move from the local level of politics to the level of the Eastern Jin Empire. The very factor of the clan structures of Chinese society had a significant double impact on the historical and political process of the period of the Jin Empire, as well as the era of the Southern and Northern dynasties in general. The duality lies in the fact that, on the one hand, the continuous strife between the regional branches of the Sima clan (the revolt of the eight princes) undermined the basis of the power of the all-Chinese empire of Western Jin from the inside, and on the other hand, the same clan structures in combination with rather strong compatriot ties (the alliance of the regional branch of the ruling Clan Sima and the local noble clan Wang) allowed the ruling house of Sima to retain supreme power and minimized the loss of the Chinese ethnos in a troubled and turbulent era. The system of the highest clans of the Jin era, in fact, developed as a result of the abandonment of the Han institute of examinations for officials, which prevented the highest clans from distributing among themselves the most important posts in the empire. Abstract:
The Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan or JinJiLuYu Border Region was formally proclaimed on 7 July 1941, the fourth anniversary of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. Even at that early stage some level of activity by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or its allies was claimed for 148 counties in Shanxi (Jin), Hebei (Ji), Shandong (Lu) and Henan (Yu). By 1947 and the outbreak of open civil war, the government of the JinJiLuYu Border Region claimed jurisdiction over some 30 million people. In 1948 it merged with the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Border Region, immediately to the north, to form the North China People's Government, part of the process that led directly to the foundation of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Xigui, Qiu. "The Early China Forum An Examination of Whether the Charges in Shang Oracle-Bone Inscriptions are Questions*." Early China 14 (1989): 77–114. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0362502800002601.

Full text
Abstract:
Oracle-bone scholars have long uniformly read the charges (i.e., the portion that mentions the event being divined) of Shang oracle-bone inscriptions as questions. Since the 1970's, many foreign oracle-bone scholars have proposed a new view that the charges are never questions, or at least are generally not questions. Whether or not the charges are actually questions is a very important question bearing not only on oracle bone studies, but also on research on ancient divination and on ancient Chinese grammar. Based on an examination of a great number of Shang oracle-bone inscriptions, the author of this essay believes that charges that can now be determined to be questions are mainly those choice-type charges in early inscriptions that contain the final particles yi and zhi, and true-or-false type charges that contain yi. Charges of the type “V bu V” (such as “rain not rain” [yu bu yu]) and “V bu,” regarded by many as choice-type questions, are actually comprised of the charge and a verification or use notation, the “bu V” being a verification and the “bu” being either a verification or a use notation (similar to the notation bu yong, “do not use”). Charges that can now be determined not to be questions are mainly in those inscriptions with complex charges, such as “this *spring the king ought not ally with Wang Cheng to attack Xia Wei, (for if he does) he will not receive divine assistance” (jin ?chun wang wu bi Wang Cheng fa Xia? Wei, fu qi shou you you, and “On ren we ought not hunt, (for if we do) it will rain” (ren wu tian, qi yu), the syntax of which shows that they cannot be questions.

Abstract:
Anaphalis Candolle (1838: 271), with approximately 110 species, is mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia, but a few species occur also in temperate Asia, Europe, and North America. There are 54 species in China, of which 40 species are endemic (Zhu & Bayer 2011). During checking names validly published in the catalogues of Jin & Chen (1994, 1999, 2007; see Yu et al. 2011), we found that the currently accepted name Anaphalis hymenolepis Y.Ling was not validly published (Chen et al. 1966: 99), because two gatherings, K.T. Fu 1051 (male) and T.P. Wang 5506 (female), were simultaneously indicated as types in the protologue contrary to Articles 40.1 and 40.2 of International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (McNeill et al. 2012). Subsequently, Li (2009: 114) discovered that the name A. hymenolepis was not validly published with two gatherings cited as types; however, he failed to validate this name, because he termed the gathering K. T. Fu 1051 as “Lectotype” contrary to Article 40.6.

Abstract:
Abstract The authorial preface to works of fiction provides a unique space for exploration of authorial self-fashioning and author-reader mediation. This article argues that, when works of fiction are translated and new prefaces written for a new readership, these prefaces can provide extra insights into the perceptions, expectations, and constrictions of both producing and consuming literature in a global era. Recent debates on world literature have centered mainly on issues of reception and circulation, preferring to define its scope in terms of the reader and the reading context rather than by the author or production process. This study considers the changing role of authors who consciously attempt to locate themselves within this contested and reconfigured field and how they construct a persona to address a newly defined world readership. This article explores the changes throughout the twentieth century by analyzing a selection of authorial prefaces to translated editions of three influential authors: Lu Xun 魯迅 (1881–1936), Ba Jin 巴金 (1906–2005), and Yu Hua 余華 (1960–). All prolific preface writers, they each have, in different ways, in different periods, engaged with the concept of a global literary readership and marketplace and negotiated their respective places within it.

Abstract:
This article reveals the philosophical value of the Confucian treatise "Kong-zi jia yu," it examines issues of the theoretical importance for the history of world sinology. In the historicо-philosophical tradition, this text has long been attributed to the Confucian scientist Van Su (3rd century), however, not so long ago the situation changed significantly. In the modern scientific community, disputes around the authorship and time of writing this treatise continue. The content of "Kong-zi jia yu" is composed of stories from the life of Confucius, his conversations with his closest students, as well as prominent political figures of that time. These conversations are philosophical dialogues, they concern the most important ontological, ethical, aesthetic and epistemological issues, such as: harmonization of the Tianxia on the basis of virtuous management, the philosophical need for ritual practice, cosmological device of the Tianxia, issues traditional for early Confucianism of a pedagogical and educational nature, moral self-improvement. The diverse theme of "Kong-zi jia yu" is a valuable source that reveals the essence of the philosophy of early Confucianism. Individual fragments of "Kong-zi jia yu" coincide with the classic Confucian monuments "Shang shu," "Lun yu," "Xiao jing," etc. Although "Kong-zi jia yu" for a number of reasons, is not considered a classic text of Confucianism, but it carries an enduring philosophical value. The study of "Kong-zi jia yu" seems to the author of this work to be an urgent scientific task, the solution of which can expand the arsenal of world philosophical knowledge, as well as contribute to the dialogue of the philosophical cultures of the East and West.

Abstract:
Abstract: The article presents the publication and diverse interpretation of a fragment of a rare metal mirror from the collection of the National Museum of the Republic of Tyva (Kyzyl city). The attribution of the composition, placed in the preserved part of the ornamental field of the mirror, required an appeal to the extensive collections of Chinese objects reflected in catalogs and special literature. It is established that the product belongs to a rare group of finds depicting the scene of the conversation “Xu Yu and Chao Fu” — a plot known since the Han Dynasty. An examination of the features of casting, the design of the rim, and the stylistics of the images of the published mirror shows that the manufacture of this item can be attributed to the period of the non-Chinese Jin Dynasty (1115–1234 AD). The significance of the fragment in the system of similar objects found on the territory of Tuva was determined by a review of known finds. The published fragment, the production of which dates back to the Jurchen time, demonstrates the latest period in the distribution of such objects in Tuva. It is important that the product shows a very rare specimen of a mirror, full analogies of which are absent not only in the designated region, but also, as far as we know, have not yet been identified in the sites of North and Central Asia. Keywords: metal mirror, Tuva, museum collections, China, Jurchen time, interpretation Acknowledgements: The study was carried out with the financial support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Ministry of Culture, Education, Science and Sports of Mongolia within the framework of the scientific project No. 19–59–44013 “Historical, Сultural and Ehnogenetic Processes in Mongolia during the Great Migration and the Early Middle Ages: an Interdisciplinary Analysis of Archaeological and Written Sources”.

Abstract:
Wang Bi, the most prominent scholar of metaphysics of the Wei and Jin Dynasties, was an unprecedented genius throughout the history of Chinese philosophy. In this article, the author examines the brilliant contributions made by Lin Li Zhen, Yu Dun Kang and Rudolf G. Wagner, who are noticed for their research of Exegesis of Lao-Tzu. It is a synthesis of the directions of investigation, approaches, and significant findings they have come up with. Among the three interpretations, Lin focuses on the explanation of Wang’s metaphysic thinking while Yu emphasizes Wang’s secular concerns by proposing the “philosophy of thoroughness” and political holism. As for Wagner, he approaches this work with the views of linguistic philosophy and suggests refined stylistics as interpretative strategy, which functions to enrich the textual contents.

Abstract:
Objective. To clarify the effectiveness and mechanism of the Chinese herbal formula Xingpi Kaiyu Fang (XPKYF) which is composed of American ginseng (Xi-Yang-shen), Radix curcumae (Yu-Jin), Acori tatarinowii rhizoma (Shi-Chang-pu), and Hypericum perforatum (Guan-Ye-lian-qiao) in depressed rats. Methods. The rat model of depression was established by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) method for 6 weeks. Rats were randomly divided into six groups: control group, CUMS group, CUMS+XPKYF (3.6g/kg/d, 7.2g/kg/d, 14.4g/kg/d) groups, and CUMS+sertraline (4.5mg/kg/d) group. The sucrose preference test and the forced swimming test were performed to assess the rats’ depression behavior. Mitochondrial ultrastructure was observed by transmission electron microscope and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, sodium potassium ATPase (Na/K-ATPase) activity, and mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes activities in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle were measured at the 14th and 42nd day. Results. Rats subjected to six weeks of CUMS exhibited decreased sucrose preference ratio and prolonged immobility time. CUMS reduced ATP content in hippocampus, decreased Na/K-ATPase activity and respiratory chain complex I, III, and IV activities in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle, and damaged mitochondrial ultrastructure of hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle. XPKYF at 14.4g/kg, the efficacy trend of which was better than the other drug groups, could prevent the stress-induced depressed behavior changes, inhibit the decrease of Na/K-ATPase activity in hippocampus, inhibit the decrease of respiratory chain complex III activities in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle, and protect mitochondria from ultrastructural damage. Conclusions. Energy deficiency and damaged mitochondrial ultrastructure were found in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle of depressed rats established by CUMS. XPKYF could partly reverse alterations in ATP, Na/K-ATPase, and respiratory chain complexes of hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle and protect mitochondria from ultrastructural damage. This provides another experimental evidence for the clinical application of XPKYF in the treatment of depression.

Abstract:
Curcuma wenyujin is a traditional medicinal plant in China. The non-steamed rhizomes, steamed rhizomes and steamed roots of this plant are used as herbal medicines in three clinics, namely Pian-jiang-huang (PJH), Wen-e-zhu (WEZ), and Wen-yu-jin (WYJ), and are officially listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of the three essential oils extracted from the C. wenyujin rhizomes and roots using GC-MS, and in doing so thirty compounds were identified. Principal component analysis (PCA) effectively distinguished the samples taken from the three different groups. Monoterpenoids, including camphene, linalool, camphor, isoborneol, borneol and eucalyptol, were characteristic components of the PJH oil, while β-elemene, β-elemenone, γ-elemene and δ-elemene were typical components of the WEZ oil, and propanenitrile, caryophyllene oxide, (-)-caryophyllene, germacrene B, pogostol and α-humulene were representative ingredients of the WYJ oil. The ratio of sesquiterpenoids to monoterpenoids in PJH, WEZ, and WYJ were 2:1, 5:1 and 7:1, respectively. The antimicrobial activities of the three essential oils and of the six main ingredients were tested against two bacterial and one fungal strains using agar diffusion and broth dilution methods. The essential oil of PJH was shown to present a higher antimicrobial activity than that of WEZ and WYJ. Based on the Partial Least Square Model (PLS), the correlation between the antimicrobial activity of the tested oils and the identified chemical components was discussed and potential components of the antimicrobial activity were predicted according to Variable Importance in the Project (VIP) Value. The tested monoterpenes eucalyptol and isoborneol demonstrated a higher inhibitory activity than the sesquiterpenes germacrone, curdione and β-elemene. Therefore, the potent inhibitory effect of the PJH oil might be attributed to its higher content of monoterpenes. The MIC values for the essential oils and their ingredients ranged from 62.5 to 500 μg/mL.

Abstract:
“In my entire life I did not produce a single painting that was uppermost in mind to create,” the celebrated painter Dong Xiwen (1914–1973) reportedly lamented on his deathbed. Dong may not have produced the dream piece that he would truly cherish, but he did create, albeit unwillingly, a deeply controversial work of art in his 1953 oil painting The Founding Ceremony of the Nation (Kaiguo dadian) (Figures 1 and 2), for it epitomizes the tension between art and politics in the People's Republic of China (PRC). In this famous piece, Dong portrays Chairman Mao Zedong (1893–1976) in Tiananmen Square on 1 October 1949, with his senior associates in attendance—Liu Shaoqi (1898–1969), Zhu De (1886–1976), Zhou Enlai (1898–1976), Gao Gang (1905–1954), Lin Boqu (1886–1960), and others. They are surrounded by huge lanterns, a Chinese symbol of prosperity, and a sea of red banners that declare the founding of a new nation. When first unveiled in 1953, the painting was widely hailed as one of the greatest oil paintings ever produced by a native artist. In just three months more than half-a-million reproductions of the painting were sold. But the fate of this work soon took an ominous turn, and the artist was requested to make three major revisions during his lifetime. In 1954 Dong was instructed to excise Gao Gang from the scene when Gao was purged by the Party for allegedly plotting to seize power and create an “independent kingdom” in Manchuria. During the Cultural Revolution in the mid-1960s Liu Shaoqi was accused of advocating a “bourgeois reactionary line” and subsequently was purged, and Dong was ordered in 1967 to redo his painting again and erased Liu from the inauguration scene. Then, in 1972, also during the Cultural Revolution, the radicals, commonly labeled the “Gang of Four,” ordered a third revision, namely, that Lin Boqu be eliminated from the painting for allegedly opposing the marriage of Mao and Jiang Qing (1914–1991) during the Yan'an days. By this time Dong was dying of cancer and was too ill to pick up the brush, so his student Jin Shangyi (b. 1934), and another artist, Zhao Yu (1926–1980), were assigned the task. These two artists, afraid of doing further damage to the original piece, eventually produced a replica of the painting, with the ailing Dong brought from the hospital for consultation on his embattled work. Though Dong died the following year, the ill-fated story of The Founding Ceremony of the Nation did not end: in 1979, with the demise of the Gang of Four and the Party's official rehabilitation of Liu Shaoqi, the images of Liu, Gao Gang, and Lin Boqu were restored in the painting. Because Jin Shangyi was on a foreign tour, Yan Zhenduo (b. 1940), a graduate of the Department of Oil Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), was called upon to help reinstall the three leaders.

Abstract:
A short review was presented of a wide range of activities involving the high Tc oxide superconductors at the Northwestern University. Calculations of the charge density associated with the d9 shell of the copper atom in the Cu-O planes and the d8 shell of the copper atoms along the Cu-O lines of the unit cell of YBa2Cu3O7 performed by Freeman, Massida and Yu were presented. Results of a detailed study of the pseudoternery phase diagram involving CuO, BaO and YO1.5 were shown which verify the existence of three compounds having the Y:Ba:Cu ratios 123 (the high Tc superconductor), 211 (the so-called green phase) and 132 (a new insulating compound). This work, performed by Mason and coworkers, involved X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical transport studies. Transport measurements by Poeppelmeier, Song, Hwu and coworkers on the assembledges YBaSrCu3O7 anf YBa2Cu3O5F2 were reported; no evidence of superconducting behavior at temperatures above 90K was seen in the latter. A detailed study of the magnetic and transport properties of the YBa2−xLaxCu3−xNixO7±δ system was reported. For small Ni concentration (x<0.3) a continuous drop in Tc was observed. For x= 0.4 and 0.5 evidence of two separate transitions, near 75K and 25K, were seen in the resistance (with the resistance going to zero at about 15K); for x=0.7 semiconducting behavior was observed. A continuous drop in the normalized diamagnetic signal was seen with increasing x with the diamagnetic fraction being below 5 % for x=0.7 and above. X-ray diffraction showed a continuous decrease in the orthorhombic fraction and an increase in the tetragonal fraction with increasing x. Results on d.c. magnetron sputtering of thin films on MgO from a stoichiometric 123 target in an argon atmosphere were shown. With proper annealing films with onset temperature of 90K and zero resistance at 68K have been prepared; this work was done by Jin, Lee, Song and coworkers. A brief report on the effect of O-stoichiometry on EPR and susceptibility measurements in the 123 compound performed by Hoffman and coworkers and NMR in the La2−xSrxCuO4 compound by Halpern and coworkers was presented.
