Abstract:
The Daode jing was compiled during the Axial Age, a period of great philosophical and religious advance worldwide. At the time China saw great upheaval and various new visions of society and rulership arose. The text is traditionally associated with the ancient thinker Laozi, a contemporary of Confucius who served in the royal Zhou government. A figure shrouded in mystery, his first biography goes back to the early Han dynasty, a time when he was already venerated as a saint. The belief then was that he lived for an extraordinarily long time and emigrated across the western border in response to the decline of Zhou culture.

Abstract:
Under the Tang, Daode jing interpretation centered in Twofold Mystery, a school that understood it through Buddhist Mādhyamika and related it to advanced spiritual attainments. In the eighth century CE, Emperor Xuanzong elevated the text to sacred scripture, made it part of the imperial examination system, and used its teachings for governmental guidance. Under the Song, Emperor Huizong, who saw himself as an exiled immortal, applied its teachings in governance and society. It also featured in the meditation practice of internal alchemy, a refinement of bodily energies. Members of the school of Complete Perfection, dominant since the thirteenth century, moreover, emphasized the Daode jing notions of clarity and stillness, which were further codified in the formulaic Qingjing jing (Scripture of Clarity and Stillness), recited in daily Daoist services to the present day.

Abstract:
Time: fall 1963 to 1976. China saw an increasingly intense struggle over literature and art, with modern jingju as a primary battlefield. The 1964 Festival of Modern Jingju Performances for Emulation reconfirmed the priority of modern plays in xiqu creation, reinforced the significance of modern jingju in literature and art, and firmly established Jiang Qing as the leader of this movement. Model works were designated as the exemplar of socialist culture construction, exemplifying such creative principles as the Basic Task, the Combination of Revolutionary Realism and Revolutionary Romanticism, and the Three Prominences. Chapter 4 includes a close analysis of Jiang Qing’s controversial role in supervising modern jingju creation and an analytical chronicle of five major versions of Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy—from the first version in 1958 to the final model version in 1970—as an illustration of changes in plotting and characterization during the creative process of model jingju development.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a broad overview of popular Chinese literature during the wartime years, including relevant historical context, such as the attempt at reconciliation between different factions and groups of writers in October 1936. Several authors are discussed, including Zhang Henshui, Ping Jinya, Jin Yi, Wang Dulu, Qin Shou’ou, Zhang Ailing, Cheng Xiaoqing, and Yu Qie. It demonstrates that the popular literature of the time was highly diverse and frequently explored aspects of tradition, modernity, nationalism, character psychology and various narrative styles. Tradition and history were freed from being seen as the enemies of progress and were now used for playful entertainment as well as fostering national pride. Overall, the wartime period saw a collapse of the formerly sharp distinction between “new” and “old” literature and this allowed numerous authors to straddle such divides in novel ways.

Abstract:
This chapter considers three of prominent socialist states that were not directly affected by the revolutions of 1989–1991—North Korea, China, and Cuba. At the time, these states had recognized that they, too, were no longer living in the world of Marx and Lenin. In different ways, each of these states drifted away from the different conceptions of single-party rule. In North Korea, the break was complete. Under successive despots, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Jong-un, the party's leading role was fully supplanted by the institution of dynastic rule. In China, the shift was gradual and less conspicuous. A new generation of leaders, represented by Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping, routinely invoked the principle of party rule to justify their policies. But they did not necessarily practice it. Indeed, by the 2000s, one was hard-pressed to say what specifically made the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) communist. Only Fidel Castro showed any consistency, but in a way that did not serve the party idea. Although he had two options to institutionalize his vision, the party and the military, he evidently remained convinced until his final days that he was the epicenter of his country's revolution.

Abstract:
The 4800 km Mekong (known as the Lan Tsan Chiang or Lancang in its upper reaches in Yunnan Province, China) rises at 5100 m elevation on the eastern edge of the Tibetan (Xizang) Plateau where the Yangtze (Chang Jiang) and Salween also rise. With a drainage basin covering 795 000 km2, the river ranks as the ninth largest and twelfth longest in the world and discharges some 475 billion m3 of water to the South China Sea annually. The mean annual flow at Kratié in Cambodia (where the catchment area upstream is 646 000 km2) is 14 700 m3 s−1 with a maximum of 67 000 m3 s−1 and a minimum of 1250 m3 s−1 (Committee for Coordination of Investigations of the Lower Mekong Basin 1966; Volker 1983). The river flows from the Tibetan Himalayas southward through China receiving tributaries from a small part of Myanmar. The drainage basin also encompasses nearly all of Lao PDR, northeast Thailand, most of Cambodia, and part of the Central Highland and the delta of south Viet Nam. In the heart of Cambodia, where the river is joined by the Tonlé Sap or Great Lake River, it rises from 1 or 2 m above sea level in May to 8 or 10 m above sea level in August. The Mekong Basin embraces some of the most diverse scenery in the world, with landforms ranging from deep gorges, to spectacular karst features, great lakes, and a huge delta. These varied landscapes support one of the most biologically diverse river systems in the world, surpassed only by the Amazon and possibly the Nile. The high biodiversity varies greatly across the following distinct landform and biogeographic provinces: 1. the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau (here termed the Chinese upper reaches); 2. the highlands of Myanmar, northern Thailand, and the northern Lao PDR; 3. the Annamite Mountains of eastern Lao PDR and western Viet Nam; 4. the plains around the central Mekong in Lao PDR, Thailand, and Cambodia; 5. the Tonlé Sap Basin; 6. the Mekong Delta and coastal mangroves (MacKinnon and MacKinnon 1986).

Abstract:
Several new routes to furans and to pyrroles have recently been put forward. Inspired by the Achmatowicz ring expansion, Patrick J. Walsh of the University of Pennsylvania developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 4097) the oxidative rearrangement of 3-hydrox-alkyl furans such as 1 to the 3-aldehyde 2. José M. Aurrecoechea of the Universidad del País Vasco established (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 3650) that cumulated alcohols, available by reduction of alkynes such as 3 with SmI2, rearrange under Pd catalysis, and then add to an acceptor alkene such as 4, to give the furan 5. Vladimir Gevorgyan of the University of Illinois at Chicago used (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 1440) an Au catalyst to rearrange an allene such as 6 to the bromo furan 7. Fabien L. Gagosz of the Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, also found (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 3181) that an Au catalyst rearranged the eneyne 8 to the pyrrole 9. Azido esters such as 10 are readily prepared from the corresponding aldehyde by phosphonate condensation. Shunsuke Chiba and Koichi Narasaka of Nanyang Technology University demonstrated (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 313) that thermal condensation of 10 with acetyl acetone 11 gave the pyrrole 12, while Cu catalyzed condensation with acetoacetate 13 gave the complementary pyrrole 14. Huan-Feng Jiang of South China University of Technology observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 3805) that condensation of an acid chloride 15 with an alkyne 16, presumably to give the alkynyl ketone, followed by the addition of hydrazine delivered the pyrazole 17. Masanobu Uchiyama of RIKEN and Florence Mongin of the Université de Rennes 1 established (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 177) that a pre-formed pyrazole 18 could be metalated and then iodinated, to give 19. Xiaohu Deng of Johnson & Johnson, San Diego reported (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 1307; J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 2412) complementary routes to pyrazoles, combining 20 and 21 under acidic conditions to give 22, and under basic conditions to give 23.

Karl Anker Jørgensen of Aarhus University combined (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 4790) two organocatalysts to effect the addition of 11 to an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde 10, leading to the cyclopentenone 12. Tomislav Rovis of Colorado State University also used (Chem. Sci. 2011, 2, 1835) two organocatalysts to condense 13 with 14 to give the cyclopentanone 15. Gregory C. Fu, now at CalTech, found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 12293) that both enantiomers of the racemic allene 16 combined with 17 to give the cyclopentene 18 in high ee. Piotr Kwiatkowski of the University of Warsaw found (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 3624) that under elevated pressure (8–10 kbar), enantioselective conjugate addition of nitromethane proceeded well even with a β-substituted cyclohexenone 19. Marco Bella of the Università di Roma observed (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2011, 353, 2648) remarkable diastereoselectivity in the addition of the aldehyde 22 to an activated acceptor 21. Following the procedure of List, Jiong Yang of Texas A&M University cyclized (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 5696) 24 to 25 in high ee. Bor-Cherng Hong of the National Chung Cheng University described (Synthesis 2011, 1887) the double Michael combination of 26 with 27 to give 28 in high ee. Observing a secondary 13C isotope effect only at the β-carbon of 30, Li Deng of Brandeis University concluded (Chem. Sci. 2011, 2, 1940) that the addition to 29 was stepwise, not concerted. In contrast, the cyclization of 32 to 33 reported (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 3932) by Tadeusz F. Molinski of the University of California San Diego likely was concerted.

Abstract:
Blunt head impacts cause relative motion between the brain and skull. This increases the normal and shear stresses in the (skull/brain) interface region, which leads to the rupture of cerebral blood vessels and in particular bridging veins. Mechanical properties of meningeal layers, in particular, subarachnoid space (SAS) trabeculae and the pia mater are not well established in the literature and could have a wide range depending on an individual. In our previous studies, knowing that SAS trabeculae and pia mater are collagen-based structures, these mechanical properties have been estimated us

While subarachnoid space (SAS) trabeculae play an important role in damping and reducing the relative movement of the brain with respect to the skull, thereby reducing traumatic brain injuries, their mechanical properties and modeling are not well established in the literature. A few studies, e.g., Zhang et al. (2002) and Xin Jin et al. (2008) have reported a wide range the elastic modulus of the trabeculae up to three orders of magnitudes. The histology of the trabeculae reveals a collagen based structure. Thus, a few investigators have estimated the mechanical properties of trabeculae based

Abstract Controlling drilling temperature and thrust forces play a significant role in reducing tool wear and improving machining efficiency. In this work, drilling experiments are set up to measure flank surface temperature via thermocouple sensor wires passed through the coolant holes of 10mm twist drill and brazed to the drill flank surface. The testing setup is an inverted drilling jig where the workpiece (Aluminum 6061-T6 rod) is chucked into the spindle of a vertical machining center. Thrust forces are co-measured using Kistler type 3-component plate dynamometer attached to the table. A

ABSTRACT: The shale oil reservoir of Lucaogou Formation is characterized by complex lithology changes in vertical direction and lamination. To simulate the lithology variation of shale oil formation, downhole cores with different lithologies were prepared and bonded to layered samples. After that, the influence of interlaminar difference on propagation behavior of hydraulic fractures (HFs) was investigated through laboratory hydraulic fracturing and mechanical characteristics analysis. The result shows that mechanically weak bedding planes (BPs) leads to obvious anisotropy of rock mechanical p

Abstract:
Increased production rates and cost reduction are affecting manufacturing in all sectors of the mobility industry. One enabling methodology that could achieve these goals in the burgeoning “Industry 4.0” environment is the deterministic assembly (DA) approach. The DA approach is defined as an optimized assembly process; it always forms the same final structure and has a strong link to design-for-assembly and design-for-automation methodologies. It also looks at the whole supply chain, enabling drastic savings at the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) level by reducing recurring costs and le
