Full textSisyphus, the exemplary figure of hybris in Greek mythology, and Jingwei, the bird symbolizing the sublime of human will in Chinese mythology, share common myths in their mythic narratives: the transgression of death, cyclical action and the vanity of effort. The aim of this thesis is to examine the convergences and divergences between the Sisyphus myth and the Jingwei myth, using a mythocritical study combined with a hermeneutical approach. The didactic reading, whether it's the teaching on measurement in the Greek and latin authors' interpretations of the myth of Sisyphys, or the lesson on the power of human will in the first rewritings of the Jingwei myth, is in fact about the same mental reality: the human disposition of excessive self-assertion, whose different treatments in the two literatures reveal the cultural specificities of each. As mythology is a reservoir of literary motifs for poets, both myths are called upon and transposed in analogous thematic expression: the construction of an imaginary world, the expression of sentiment, the allegorical use as a counter-model for human actions and the exaltation of heroism. Through an analysis of the tendency to rehabilitate the two figures in contemporary literature, we can conclude that these two myths, marked by the mytheme of cyclical action, are a metaphor for the human desire to surpass oneself, and that their rewritings over time address the different facets of this desire. The tension between the invincible impulse to go beyond the limit and the rational awareness of the vanity of this attempt, which is inherent in this metaphor, is manifested as much in the occidental authors' criticism of acts of excess as in the ambivalent attitude that accompanies the heroic reading of the Jingwei myth. The complexity of this tension in the Chinese cultural context, which is based on a different conception of how to act, leads to a skewed reading of Camus's Myth of Sisyphus. Full textThis dissertation studies the collaboration government headed by Wang Jingwei (1940-1945) at the crossroads of two trajectories: those of China’s modern state and Japan’s Empire. More broadly, my work aims at enriching the field of state-building research. Such an approach may seem counter-intuitive, as this regime is still labelled a "puppet" by Chinese historiography, which has cast it aside from the rest of the period and confined it to an ideological history of collaboration. I consider it within the context of a political and social study of government and administration, which tries to grasp the real functioning of the state machine in the occupied zone. For this purpose, I develop the concept of occupation state, i.e. a larger apparatus than the sole collaboration regimes, which included Japanese military and civilian agencies as well as Chinese local governments. From 1940 on, the state-building process aimed at integrating these organizations behind the façade of the Wang Jingwei government. However, it was diverted by a formation process, which resulted from the contradictions between its different actors. I explore this process from three different angles. The first part studies the establishment of the occupation state from the Japanese point of view, showing the mutual impact of centre and periphery within the Japanese Empire. Then, it follows the genesis of the occupation state up to the establishment of the Wang Jingwei government. The second part focuses on the experience of the latter, whose specificity, compared to other pro-Japanese regimes, was the ambition of the Wang group to restore the legitimate nationalist government as part of a "return to the capital". Thirdly, I look at the administrative personnel’s institutional and ideological framework as well as their living conditions

Full textThis research examines the soundtrack and the syncretic elements, responsible for the meaning of jingles. What role these elements play in relation mainly to the persuasive function and assignment meaning of the message proposal? This is the main question of this research. The prominent position and the function of these components in the advertising are indicators of the importance of this study, investigated based on semiotic theories and theories of musical melody, arrangement, composition and harmony. Unifying the semiotic and musical elements, we seek therefore to identify the means used and the patterns that are able to explain the persuasive gains that advertising acquires in jingles. The semiotic analysis has its basis in the work of Charles Sanders Peirce, because his classifications of signs enable accurate reading of mixtures between text, image and sound in jingles. We also use the greimasian discursive semiotics and tensive semiotics, marked by Luiz Tatit, because it is a work that brings important contributions to musical semiotics. Music theorists are also triggered to unravel, in the jingle, their musical structures, such as arrangement, melody, harmonic field, etc. The corpus of research is the campaign developed by the company PA Publicidade, produced by Conspiração Filmes and composed by Panela Produtora, to the Pão de Açúcar Group, with the participation of the singer Clarice Falcão, because it is a series of intersemiotics jingles both aired on television and Internet, and the company have aimed exclusively jingles to your online channel
Esta pesquisa examina a trilha musical e os elementos sincréticos, responsáveis pelo sentido, dos jingles publicitários. Que papel esses elementos desempenham no que tange, principalmente, à função persuasiva e à atribuição de sentido da mensagem proposta? Esta é a questão central desta pesquisa. A posição de destaque e a função desses componentes nas peças publicitárias são indicadores da importância desse estudo, investigado com base em teorias semióticas e teorias musicais de melodia, arranjo, composição e harmonia. Unificando os elementos semióticos e musicais, busca-se, portanto, identificar os meios utilizados e os padrões gerados que sejam capazes de explicitar os ganhos persuasivos que a publicidade adquire nos jingles. As análises semióticas tem sua base na obra de Charles Sanders Peirce, pois suas classificações de signos possibilitam a leitura acurada das misturas entre o texto, a imagem e o som nos jingles. Também utilizamos a semiótica discursiva greimasiana e tensiva, pautada por Luiz Tatit, pois se trata de uma obra que traz contribuições importantes para a semiótica da canção. Teóricos da música também são acionados para desvendar, no jingle, suas estruturas musicais, como arranjo, melodia, campo harmônico, etc. O corpus da pesquisa é a campanha desenvolvida pela empresa PA Publicidade, com produção da Conspiração Filmes e composição da Panela Produtora, para o Grupo Pão de Açúcar, com participação da cantora Clarice Falcão, por se tratar de uma série de jingles intersemióticos veiculados tanto na televisão quanto na internet, e pela empresa possuir jingles voltados exclusivamente ao seu canal online

Full textThe objective of this work is to rescue the main jingles used in the presidential electoral campaigns with direct vote in Brazil, under the optics of the propaganda and of the political-electoral marketing and inside of the social context of each time, trying to discover what they present in common. The idea is to describe the lyrics of the electoral music and as those lyrics they were used as advertising pieces in the electoral campaigns. To this, it will be made a rising and analysis in audio pieces in the phonographic, in the radio and TV history, in search of those music (jingles), telling the strategies used with those pieces. Researches bibliographical it will be made with the objective of knowing the social and political context of each time to compare the lyric and the rhythm used in each jingle.(AU)
O objetivo deste trabalho é resgatar os principais jingles utilizados nas campanhas eleitorais presidenciais com voto direto no Brasil, sob a ótica da propaganda e do marketing político-eleitoral e dentro do contexto social de cada época, procurando descobrir o que eles apresentam em comum. A ideia é descrever as letras das músicas eleitorais e como estas foram usadas como peças publicitárias nas campanhas eleitorais. Para tanto, será efetuado um levantamento e análise em peças de áudio na história fonográfica, na história do rádio e da TV, em busca dessas músicas (jingles), contextualizando e relatando as estratégias utilizadas com essas peças. Uma pesquisa bibliográfica será efetuada com o intuito de conhecer o contexto social e político de cada época, para comparar a letra e o ritmo utilizado em cada jingle.(AU)

Full textThe aim of this research is to analyses, through Greimas semiotics theory, the sense of combined musical texts, formed by verbal and not-verbal languages. This conception consists of three levels: Basic, Narrative and Discourse, which are distinct but interrelated among themselves. After that, a inter-semiotics comparison is made with the results achieved from inquiry of existing significant contents in these two languages. It is noticed that inter-textual concept and argumentatives aspects in both of them. Therefore, we try to prove that different unified genres strengthen manipulation strategies, making the combined text highly persuasive. In the end, this paper proposes some methodological suggestions to guide a future practical-pedagogical application directed to teachers and graduate students of diverse areas of languages. Having said that, this research must propose a detailed study of problematic persuasives mechanisms inside the texts. Within this perspective, it was chosen as analysis corpus the Labour Party (PT) Jingles, used during electoral campaigns to the presidency of the republic.

Full textAo longo dos anos 1980 e 1990, a publicidade comeÃou se dirigir mais fortemente para o pÃblico infantil, quando a crianÃa passou a ser vista como consumidora e decisiva nas compras da casa. Assim, a publicidade tentou cativar a crianÃa a pedir os produtos anunciados aos pais, interferindo na conformaÃÃo de seus hÃbitos de consumo na infÃncia. Portanto, esta dissertaÃÃo procurou investigar como os jovens, nascidos nessas dÃcadas, em Fortaleza interpretam sua exposiÃÃo à publicidade, em particular aos comerciais e jingles televisivos, na infÃncia e sua influÃncia sobre os hÃbitos de consumo na Ãpoca e nos dias atuais. Escolhemos, alÃm dos comerciais televisivos, os jingles como desencadeadores das lembranÃas da infÃncia, pois eles apresentam a mÃsica para atrair a atenÃÃo da crianÃa e letra fÃcil de ser memorizada. Problematizamos ao longo da dissertaÃÃo os conceitos de sociedade do consumo (BAUDRILLARD, 1995), de infÃncia (HEYWOOD, 2004; ARIÃS, 1981), de publicidade para crianÃa (SAMPAIO, 2000; BUCHT e FEILITZEN, 2002), de memÃria (HALBWALCHS, 1990; BERGSON, 2006), de hÃbitos (LAHIRE, 2002), de gostos (BOURDIEU, 2008) e de jingles (VIANNA, 2004; SACKS, 2007) com o propÃsito de dar conta das complexas relaÃÃes entre a comunicaÃÃo, a memÃria e a conformaÃÃo de hÃbitos de consumo pela publicidade e os comerciais. Dividimos a pesquisa em duas fases: primeiramente, fizemos uma pesquisa exploratÃria com questionÃrios para descobrir os hÃbitos de consumo dos jovens de 22 a 32 anos e os comerciais e jingles que eles lembraram; e com base nos questionÃrios, foram escolhidos os participantes para os relatos de vida (BERTAUX, 2005) sobre a memÃria do consumo. ConcluÃmos, com base nos relatos dos jovens, que, a forte presenÃa da televisÃo na infÃncia contribuiu para que eles fossem expostos a inÃmeros comerciais e lembrassem vÃrios deles; os produtos desejados e/ou consumidos na infÃncia mais lembrados foram os brinquedos e produtos alimentÃcios, ou seja, os que mais investiram em publicidade na Ãpoca; os jovens tÃm hoje o hÃbito de consumir os produtos, especificamente as guloseimas, que eles consumiram com frequÃncia na infÃncia; e os jovens consideraram os comerciais e jingles dos anos 1980 e 1990 como parte da memÃria infÃncia. Portanto, identificamos a presenÃa da publicidade fortemente enraizada na memÃria e nos hÃbitos de consumo desses jovens, razÃo pela qual consideramos fundamental problematizar como a publicidade se dirige Ãs crianÃas, promovendo o consumo desde a infÃncia.

There are two different symbols to compose jingles: music and verbal language. Musical practice alludes to the art of organizing tone, as in the aspect adopted by advertising, using common standards to a favourable reception to a certain target audience, starting with texts and a music-socio-cultural context preexistent in the listener´s repertoire that, lato senso, may be defined in musical genders. These advertising languages, defined as a persuasion element and denominated jingles, in its composing form, results in a redundant media transmission and a continuous reception by a role model listener that assimilates, if not while persuaded, as reproducer and repeater of its commonly simplified lyrics and melodies. Measure such reflexes in the receptor memories was one of the aspects aimed in the study (LOTMAN, 1996), beginning with the re-elaboration of what is observed in the cultural dynamics (FERREIRA, 2004) not as a “bunch of information” but as an organized and complex mechanism that recodifies and translates the messages from “the other symbol”. Also, an eventual musical gender hybridizes as a counterpoint to the existence of a certain “purism” or musical gender hegemony that composes the jingles, with regard to rhythms, instrumentation, structure and contextualization in different period of times were analyzed in this study. It is here proposed an hybrid and mediated jingle (BARBERO, 2009), either by the musical melting pot in its compositions or by the dialogical frontier with the new medias, constantly transposing supports, receiving and surviving through the years or even decades with an updated and critical reading as an advertising piece guided not only to electronic media but also the virtual ones, in the different context and relation with contemporaneous music and technology
Dois sistemas de signos compõem os jingles: música e a linguagem verbal. A prática musical remete à arte de organizar tons, que na sua vertente adotada pela publicidade vale-se de códigos comuns à recepção favorável de determinado público-alvo, a partir de textos e contexto músico-sócio-cultural previamente existentes no repertório de tais ouvintes que, em lato senso, podem ser definidos como gêneros musicais. Estas linguagens publicitárias, definidas como elemento de persuasão e denominadas jingles, em sua forma composicional, resultam em transmissão midiática redundante e recepção sucessiva por parte do ouvinte-modelo, que a assimila, senão enquanto persuadido, como reprodutor e repetidor de suas habitualmente simplificadas letras e melodias. Mensurar tais reflexos na memória do receptor foi dos aspectos perscrutados por esse trabalho (LOTMAN, 1996), a partir da reelaboração que se observa na dinâmica cultural (FERREIRA, 2004), que não opera como “um depósito de informações”, mas um mecanismo organizado e complexo que decodifica e traduz as mensagens obtidas em “outro sistema de signos”. Também a eventual hibridização dos gêneros musicais em contraponto à dúvida quanto à existência de certo “purismo” ou hegemonia dos gêneros musicais que compõem dos jingles, em relação aos ritmos, instrumentação, estrutura e contextualização vigentes em suas épocas foram aqui avaliadas. E, hoje, propõe-se que o jingle definitivamente hibridizado e mediado (BARBERO, 2009), seja pela própria mescla musical existente em suas composições, seja pela fronteira dialógica com novas mídias, em constante transposição de suportes, recebe e sobrevive aos anos ou mesmo décadas com uma atualizada leitura crítica como peça publicitária direcionada não apenas às mídias eletrônicas, mas às virtuais, em seus contextos e relações com a música e com a tecnologia contemporâneas

Full textIn this dissertation, the musical systems, the music production and vocal esthetics of ching-hai are exposed through the singing and practices of Chinese actor in the 1920's and 1930's. Based upon fieldwork carried out since 1979, the research involves pluri disciplinary documentation and methods, and combines theoretical discussion with concrete musical analyses. The first chapter gives an altogether historic, social and cultural overview of the period with a description of the infrastructure, the theatrical activities and the human resources characteristic of ching-hai. The second chapter describes the methodological problems and the tools of analysis involved in the research. The next two chapters consider the musical system and language. They focus on the theory of musical modes, and how, in practice, melody and rhythm convey these modes. The study of musical formas once completed, the last four chapters are devoted to musical production. Three spheres of activity are defined: (i) through the generative principles of musical production, (2) through the musical orientations of the main theatrical role-types, and (3) through the 'flavour' (weir) - a phenomenon which results from the expression of emotion through both singing and performance. This 'flavour' allows the actors of ching-hsi and their audience to identity with the culture of this genre. Ultimately, the vocal and dramatic. .

This masters dissertation constitutes in a mapping with base in a field research carried in the streets of commercial center and adjacencies of the Aracaju city, capital of Sergipe state, located in Brazilian‟s Northeast. This is a study about the jingle and others social practices found in the day-by-day of streets by the streets sellers. There is a clear intention of consider the preg?o singed by sellers of the street how a jingle that is produced, transmitted and accepted in a means social, characterized how cultural manifestation study. Thus, this ethnography aims to observe the use of the jingle and other cultural practices carried out by street vendors, showing how they are produced, disseminated and consumed in everyday life, as a way to do it. These practices that occur in cities since ancient times continue to occur in all Brazilian cities, including the capital cities, although in some cases, some of them such as the jingle, they get more scarce. Specifically aimed at rescuing the memory of these cultural practices, considering them as "tactics" of practitioners, a resistance of street vendors, individuals, "ordinary" real "anonymous wanderers" in the face of pressure from a dominant force and uneven. Esta disserta??o de mestrado se constitui em um mapeamento dos vendedores de rua baseado em uma pesquisa de campo realizada no centro comercial e adjac?ncias, da cidade de Aracaju, capital do Estado de Sergipe, situado na regi?o Nordeste do Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo sobre o jingle e outras pr?ticas sociais exercidas, no cotidiano das ruas, pelos vendedores ambulantes. Existe uma clara inten??o em considerar o preg?o cantado pelos vendedores de rua como um jingle que ? produzido, transmitido e aceito em um meio social, caracterizando-se assim como um estudo de manifesta??o cultural. Assim, este trabalho tem como objetivo a observa??o do uso do jingle e outras pr?ticas culturais exercidas pelos vendedores de rua, evidenciando-se como as mesmas s?o produzidas, divulgadas e consumidas no cotidiano, como uma maneira de fazer. The capture of this sense covers three attitudes of the individual vis-a-vis the soundtrack: emotional response, cognitive and behavioral. This research addresses the cognitive reaction of the individual in relation to soundtracks advertising produced in 2012, for European cars. This research verifies what terms the constituent elements of a soundt rack are adequate values "dynamism, modernity and security" of european cars. The methodology of this research has two parts. The first part is the analysis of the narrative structure of each commercial to discover the narrative strategies of each commer cial of our corpus. The other part is to perform an experiment in the context of a structured interview with two samples: one comprises any potential consumers, and the other will consist of potential consumer’s experts. The meeting with these groups allows us to make a comparison between the cognitive response of experts and of noun experts vis-a-vis the same soundtrack

Full textThe paper discusses the role of the musical element, the Jingle, within the framework of the advertising piece commonly called "commercial". In an attempt to investigate the premise that the Jingle lost significant importance in Digital Media s Age in comparison to advertising messages conveyed on twentieth century´s end by Radio and Television, the methodological techniques were applied Content Analysis, in search of measure and point out the significant decrease in the mean time for the Jingle in Digital Media s Age advertising pieces and Discourse Analysis, which allowed measuring the depletion in the use of language features structuring the musical-literary discourse of Jingle throughout the first decade twenty-first century Brazilian advertising. After the evaluation of quantitative and qualitative parameters of the production of Jingle in Digital Media s Age, the paper concludes that there was, in fact, waste of space and importance, and the Jingle, who has held the starring role, is now an supporting role within the communicational process with the market.
O trabalho aborda o papel desempenhado pelo elemento musical, o Jingle, dentro da estrutura da peça publicitária comumente chamada de comercial . Para averiguar a premissa de que o Jingle perdeu importância expressiva pela chegada da Era dos Meios Digitais em relação às mensagens publicitárias veiculadas até o final do século XX pelo Rádio e pela Televisão, as técnicas metodológicas aplicadas foram a Análise de Conteúdo, com a proposta de mensurar e apontar a significativa diminuição no tempo médio destinado ao Jingle nas peças publicitárias na Era dos Meios Digitais e a Análise do Discurso, que possibilitou aferir o empobrecimento no uso dos recursos de linguagem na estruturação do discurso músico-literário do Jingle ao longo da primeira década do século XXI na publicidade brasileira. Após a avaliação dos parâmetros quantitativo e qualitativo da produção do Jingle na Era dos Meios Digitais, o trabalho conclui que houve, de fato, perda de espaço e importância e que o Jingle, que já ocupou o papel de protagonista, hoje é um coadjuvante dentro do processo comunicacional com o mercado.

Full textThe present work analyzes from a semiotic perspective the elements that make up the jingle. This type of resource is one of the most used by brands, due to its effectiveness in generating consumer recall. The concepts of the advertising jingle and narrative semiotics were addressed to understand its structure and what are the components that make it up. The definition of these concepts validates the relevance of studying jingles from a semiotic perspective, since it allows a more detailed interpretation of how these elements are used and how they manage to generate a link with the brand. For this, the qualitative methodology and the content analysis tool are proposed. A three-stage process will be followed: identification, analysis and interpretation of the components. The cases chosen for the research work had great relevance in the national advertising field of 2016. Being awarded at festivals such as the ANDA and EFFIE awards. These are: “Cholo soy” from Mi Banco, “El maestro soy yo” from Maestro and “Frunacatoinga” from Fruna.

Full textThe advertising discourse is the most present and that provokes a biggest impact in the complex and heterogenic contemporary society due to the pulse, tensions, conflicts, expectations and frustrations it generates. This study analyses the advertising discourse in radio ads and offers a panorama of the manipulation strategies used in its texts, hoping to give its contribution to communication students and creative professionals on finding their clues to overcome the proper limits of this medium, once that this is an easier task to make when one can count on visual resources of image media. The radio has some syncretic characteristics given by verbal, vocal, musical and other sound effect resources. These resources take part of the advertising narrative, passionate, figurative and enunciative tracks. Besides promoting the product brand and inform about its benefits, the ads also tries to satisfy the consumers latent and secret desires. These desires manifest human passions. The realization of individual passions sometimes requires the transgression of moral and legal values of a particular society in a particular era. As to distinguish and differentiate itself from the advertising universe, the advertising discourse has to astonish, and almost always does it, inciting us to break with these values. This research investigated on how does radio spots and jingles explore the modalization of human passions, becoming into transgression invitations. When the moral values are also precepts of a religion tradition, its broken are considered sins. Semiotics is one of the most developed and more advanced theory and methodology dominium into the language and signification sciences environment. This was the methodology that based the research of sense production process, the manipulation mechanisms, and the efficacy of the expression resources presented in this work. The chosen corpus is compound of nine jingles and spots of food products and restoration services. The analysis of its elements, using resources of verbal, vocal, musical and sound effects demonstrated that they participate on the sense construction and are oriented to the affection and modalization of human passions. As passions are liable to the sanctions of moralization, by the absence or by the excess, in a general mode the achieved results demonstrated the presence of transgression incitation. In the particular case of moral values dictated by the Christian-catholic tradition, in minor or larger grade, the presence of a Sin invitation was evidenced
O discurso publicitário é um dos mais presentes e de maior impacto na complexa e heterogênea sociedade contemporânea em função das pulsões, tensões, conflitos, expectativas e frustrações que ele gera. O presente estudo analisa o discurso publicitário em peças de rádio, e oferece um panorama das estratégias de manipulação utilizadas em seus textos, de modo a contribuir para que estudantes de comunicação e criadores publicitários obtenham pistas para superar as limitações próprias deste meio, uma vez que tal tarefa é mais fácil de realizar quando se pode contar com os recursos visuais das mídias imagéticas. O rádio possui características sincréticas dadas pelos recursos dos sistemas verbal, vocal, musical e demais efeitos sonoros. Estes recursos participam da construção de percursos narrativos, passionais, figurativos e enunciativos das peças publicitárias. Além de promover a marca do produto e informar sobre seus benefícios, os anúncios publicitários dão conta de satisfazer os desejos latentes e inconfessáveis dos consumidores. Tais desejos manifestam as paixões humanas. A realização das paixões individuais requer por vezes a transgressão dos valores morais, e legais de uma determinada sociedade numa determinada época. A fim de se diferenciar e se destacar no universo da comunicação social o discurso publicitário precisa surpreender, e muitas vezes o faz, incitando-nos a romper com tais valores. Esta pesquisa investigou como as peças publicitárias para rádio exploram a modalização das paixões humanas, constituindo-se em convites à transgressão. Quando os valores morais são também preceitos de uma tradição religiosa, seus rompimentos são considerados pecados. A Semiótica inclui-se entre os domínios de maior desenvolvimento e avanços teóricos e metodológicos no âmbito das ciências da linguagem e da significação. Foi essa metodologia que embasou a pesquisa dos processos de produção de sentido, dos mecanismos de manipulação, e da eficácia dos recursos de sua expressão presentes neste trabalho. O corpus escolhido compõe-se de nove jingles e spots de produtos alimentícios e serviços de restauração. A análise de seus elementos, utilizando recursos dos sistemas verbal, vocal, sonoro e musical demonstrou que eles participam da construção do sentido e estão orientados à sensibilização e modalização das paixões humanas. Como as paixões humanas estão sujeitas às sanções da moralização, seja pela falta ou pelo excesso, de um modo geral os resultados alcançados demonstraram a presença do incitamento à transgressão. Full textThis dissertation examines the process of creating Jingle Dreams with the youth in Clanwilliam. It aims to ascertain whether the processes of Community Theatre drama create opportunities for the individuals in the identified community to explore a social identity influenced by historical legacy, heritage, memory (or absence thereof) and socio-economic environment. The intention of the dissertation is influenced by the Applied Drama mission to benefit individuals, communities and societies through artistic forms of intervention such as dramatic activities, theatre directing, mediation and discussions. I will examine how the processes and the performative qualities of drama and theatre have the potential to transform individuals and society. Community Theatre creates the space for young people to share and question common experiences of life. This ensures that marginalised voices are heard which has psychological and social benefits for the participants. The dissertation proposes to interrogate how young people revealed their social identity through the narrative structure, dialogue, stereotypes and symbols in Jingle Dreams. I have been strongly motivated by the work of Augusto Boal which was the source of a large part of the dramatic processes. In the research process, the young people belonging to The Community Networking Creative Arts Group were encouraged to find their own forms of artistic, cultural and theatrical expression. During the rehearsal process, the group improvised and developed many scenes which reflected issues such as alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence and intergenerational tension. The narrative of the performance was based both on their stories and on stories from their community. It reflected their circumstances, their struggles, their hopes and their dreams. Theatre devised in community situations reflects concern with the representation of memory, and participants are invited to recognise that autobiographical narratives have social, communitarian and historical significance, as well as personal relevance. Performers drew on their own experiences to devise the scenes. This process often emphasised how the boundaries between truth and fiction are blurred. The lack of a clear distinction between fact and art facilitated the revelation, exploration and contestation of social identity.
