Emborg, Elin, and Marie Halling. Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Discourse Studies, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-1732.

Full textMusic streaming services offer a large quantity of music. Apart from users being able to create their own playlists, these services also offer personal music recommendations. Even though these recommendations meet the users preferences, they don't always fit the users current situation. In this study, we present an artifact in the shape of a context-aware music recommender application, that uses Spotify services to recommend and handle playback of music. A context-aware music application is an application that takes a users current context in consideration when recommending music. In this study, context-aware refers to the situation a given user might find themselves in, e.g. "jogging in the park at 3pm". We present a questionnaire about which contextual factors users think are important, and questions about listening preferences. The artifact is tested in a user study, and the results are analysed and discussed in relation to previous studies. We found that users have a positive attitude towards contextual factors influencing which music they listen to, and that there is a positive attitude towards contextual music recommenders. Furthermore we found that activity is the most relevant contextuall factor to users.

We intend to investigate what these concepts have incommon through their rules and compare that to Jam Sessions. Following this we will try to extractthe purpose of the rules. These purposes will then be put in topologically measurable intervals thatcan be transfered onto the topological model. The results will then be used to compareJams/Hackathons, similar concepts and events that only have a few things in common with Jams, tosee if the model can determine if an event is in the spirit of a Jam without actually being one.

Full textThe Ericsson AXE-based systems are programmed using an internally developed language called Plex-C. Plex-C is normally compiled to execute on an Ericsson internal processor architecture. A transition to standard processors is currently in progress. This makes it interesting to examine if Plex-C can be compiled to execute on the JVM, which would make it processor independent.
The purpose of the thesis is to examine if parts of the run-time environment of Plex-C can be translated to Java and if this can be done so that sufficient performance is obtained. It includes how language constructions in Plex-C can be translated to Java.
The thesis describes how a limited part of the Plex-C run-time environment is implemented in Java. Optimizations are an important part of the implementation.
It is also described how the JVM system was tested with a benchmark test.
The test results indicate that the implemented system is a few times faster than the Ericsson internal processor architecture. But this performance is still not sufficient for the JVM system to be an interesting replacement for the currently used processor architecture. It might still be useful as a processor independent test platform.

Full textThe purpose of this investigation is to establish the strategic planning for the company JJM SRL, so as to ensure the company’s recognition and leadership nationwide in the drilling and blasting sector. This planning has been carried out sequentially, based on the three stages that make up a strategic process: (a) preparation; (b) implementation; and (c) evaluation and control. The preparation stage begins with an evaluation of external factors that may influence the achievement of the company’s objectives, noting that the construction sector in Peru has experienced constant growth in recent years, making for excellent development opportunities for JJM SRL. An internal evaluation of the company is also presented, resulting in controllable factors that may be improved via internal strategies. Long-term objectives are determined. The ability to meet these objectives will guarantee that JJM SRL achieves the vision established. For such purpose, strategies are set forth which will ultimately be those applied for the development of the strategic plan. The implementation stage includes the presentation of short-term objectives. The achievement of these objectives, together with the strategies, is necessary in order to meet the long-term objectives established in the previous stage. The implementation stage also covers the resources allocated to the short-term objectives, as well as the policies on each strategy. As such, successful implementation depends on the achievement of the strategic objectives established for JJM SRL. The last stage of the strategic process—the control stage—uses tools such as the balanced scorecard (BSC). This model frames each short-term objective within one of the four perspectives proposed therein and assigns it an indicator in order to monitor the compliance therewith on a permanent basis. Finally, the Conclusions, Recommendations, and Future of JJM SRL are presented.

This thesis proposes a communications system that utilizes the benefits of CubeSats to provide jam-resistant communications. The growth of CubeSats within educational communities has prompted their use in industry; both industry and academia have contributed towards making CubeSats much more capable. CubeSats can now perform many advanced missions, from technology demonstrations to Earth observation missions and science missions. Meanwhile, military satellite communications (MILSATCOM) continues to rely primarily on large, highly-capable satellites. CubeSats could augment MILSATCOM by providing many low-cost space terminals with short development times as a means to create a more robust communications suite. The CubeSat communications architecture proposed in this thesis aims to support mobile users in hostile environments who need to relay information to a command center. Jam-resistant communications are achieved by performing ground-based beam-forming (GBBF) on a radio-frequency (RF) uplink and relaying the information to a ground station via a laser communications (lasercom) downlink: each CubeSat acts as an element of a sparse antenna array. With the growth of free-space lasercom in the last decade, lasercom is now a reality on CubeSat-scale platforms. Lasercom systems have lower size, weight, and power (SWaP) compared to RF systems with similar data rates, making them a good fit for CubeSat platforms. GBBF is a special case of beamforming where each element of an antenna array relays its signal to a ground station for processing, minimizing complexity on the space terminal. Beam-forming provides anti-jamming capabilites due to the spacings between elements in the array, also known as spatial diversity. This spatial diversity allows spatial filtering to occur, which modifies the array's radiation pattern to mitigate interference, add gain to the main lobe, or add multiple beams. The system is designed with the goal of minimizing cost and development time, and two ways of accomplishing this are by supporting currently fielded handheld RF transmitters and by utilizing a lasercom downlink which is being developed as part of the Nanosatellite Optical Downlink Experiment (NODE) in MIT's Space, Telecommunications, Astronomy, and Radiation Lab (STARLab). This thesis builds on previous work done on the NODE project, specifically the waveform design for NODE. NODE is a 3U CubeSat demonstrating a lasercom down-link while in low Earth Orbit (LEO). NODE uses 200mW transmit power to obtain data rates from 8 Mbps to 80 Mbps. The Optical Communications Telescope Laboratory (OCTL) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and an amateur telescope will be used as optical ground stations. In order to send information to the ground station, NODE uses a waveform that provides forward error correction (FEC) and interleaving to mitigate channel effects. This thesis develops the channel coding, interleaving, modulation, and framing approach employed in the NODE waveform to provide error-free communications. A Reed-Solomon code, selected because of its performance and the existence of open-source implementations, provides error-correction capabilities. NODE uses a one-second interleaver to combat the effects of channel fading when the laser beam passes through the atmosphere. The transmitter uses pulse position modulation (PPM), an intensity modulation scheme that uses the delay of a single pulse within a symbol time to transmit information, due to the advantages in using a duty-cycled waveform with an average-power limited optical amplifier. Since the delay of the pulse conveys information for PPM, the transmitter clock must be recovered in order to properly demodulate the received waveform, and NODE uses inter-symbol guard times to encode the transmitter clock onto the waveform. Python simulations are presented showing that the channel coding, interleaving, and modulation are sufficient to obtain error-free communications with a target channel bit error rate (BER) of 1 x 10-⁴. The modulator is implemented within a field programmable gate array (FPGA), and the design, validation, and testing of the modulator are described. The feasibility of performing GBBF on RF uplinks to CubeSats in LEO, where each CubeSat acts as an element of an adaptive array, is examined. The high Doppler and large spacing between CubeSats requires the use of a space-time-frequency adaptive processor (STFAP). The STFAP consists of Doppler and delay taps, complex weights, an adaptive processor, a polyphase filter bank, and a polyphase combiner. The STFAP becomes infeasible as the Doppler and delay spread between different CubeSats increases, and analysis is used to identify scenarios where the Doppler and delay spreads seen in LEO are acceptable. Systems Tool Kit (STK) simulations are performed to analyze the Doppler and delay environment in LEO. Two CubeSat formations and multiple orientations between a user and jammer are examined to determine cases where null-forming, a special case of beamforming, is effective. A constellation is necessary to provide global coverage and maximize the effectiveness of null-forming, and two possible constellations are discussed.

The production - collection and parades - the Brazilian designer Jum Nakao constitutes a kind of Deleuzian Event in the sense, that is, it maintains a link with the fashion-creation, claiming satisfaction and constant innovation, but simultaneously provides a confrontation to the logic question the and rules of this market. The research "Jum Nakao: fashion and artistic thinking" seeks to establish intersections between the world of fashion and the visual arts, bringing actions of these two fields and theories of creation. The procedures adopted by the designer are analyzed through the prism of American theorist Rosalind Krauss and, especially, the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995). The fashion designer s work discusses the dispossession and nomad thought, restless and in constant experimentation and without hierarchy. The first chapter presents the designer and their work context. Fashion covers as a spectacle that appropriates contemporary art, notably the performances and installations. The second examines the parade "A costura do invisível", held in 2004 in São Paulo Fashion Week, which the end of the presentation, the clothes carefully constructed tracing paper were destroyed before an audience that was stunned. The third chapter discusses the repetition of the image through the installation playmobil dolls "Revolver", presented in 2007 at the Museum Oscar Niemeyer (MOM), in Curitiba. The latter reflects on the installation "Vestígios vestíveis," which unfolds in small hexagonal modules emerged on the catwalk but in the exhibition space of Fashion Week in 2010

Full textIn this dissertation I examine through a close reading of J.M. Coetzee's Dusklands (1974) the textual dymamic that impels the two narrator-protagonists toward the solipsist position - the ground of the true Cartesian. I show how Eugene Dawn and Jacobus Coetzee are presented as products of Western print culture and children of René Descartes: literate and acutely self-conscious. I note how each conceives himself according to Descartes' mind-body dualism as primarily a thinking thing. I argue that this self-conception is reinforced by their paradoxical presence-as-absence as figures in a fiction.

This doctoral thesis analyzes the oeuvre of US film director Jim Jarmusch from the perspective of postmodern theories. By applying a series of parameters that explore the presence of typical postmodern aesthetic and ideological elements in his films, postmodernity is not viewed as a cultural current one is free to engage in, but rather as an environment one is unwillingly immersed in. The main foci of my analysis are the relationship between Jim Jarmusch's work and the work of other film directors and the lack of connection between his characters as well as a dissociative, fragmented environment which fails to integrate the various elements of Jarmusch's movies.

Full textThe optimizations of a program can be performed on the intermediate code, generated during compilation time, or through the Performance Refactoring that consists of insertion of optimizations directly in the source code of the application. In the source code structure, iteration loops have a major impact in the performance of the application because they are time-consuming code and, thus, an essential target of optimizations. One loop optimization is the Unroll and Jam that applies restructuring operations in nested loops allowing efficient usage of memory hierarchy. Its optimization steps are: to unroll the target loops, and to join them forming a single block of instruction. This work proposes the usage of refactoring to automate Unroll and Jam loops in source code level, allowing to accumulate the effects of optimization in the original pro- gram with the optimizations in the intermediate code by traditional compilers. The im- plementation was based on structures of Photran tool 7.0, which consists of an integrated development environment for Fortran 77-2008. The performance results using Unroll and Jam by Performance Refactoring with dif- ferent levels of unrolling, showed significant gains compared to the optimization per- formed by the Intel compiler. It should also be noted that the joint of both optimization techniques has led to better results than the use of an individual technique. As future works, new researches can be performed to obtain optimal rates of unrolling and to join the application of other optimization approaches. Furthermore, studies may search for optimizations to be applied by the Performance Refactoring.

Full textSimpson, Tracey. "L'intertextualité de l'oeuvre poétique de Jim Morrison." Pau, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PAUU1002.
Full textThis study concentrates on the notion of "intertextuality in the poetic works of jim morrison. " it explores the sources (notably nietzsche, rimbaud, artaud and kerouac) and the literary and thematic relationships of the work (with those of blake, huxley, yeats, lawrence, hesse). Its eclecticism reflects the heterogeneous nature of morrison's poetic legacy. Morrison is situated at a crossroads, seeking, in the literature of the past and the present, a solution to his pessimistic vision of a corrupted america. The first part of the thesis concentrates on the nature of poetic perception, re-assessing the platonic philosophy of human vision which simultaneously represents the key and obstacle to knowledge. The second part develops morrison's mysticism, in the wake of the illuminist tradition (reinterpreted by blake, yeats and lawrence). The purification of his perception allows the poet to spiritualize his quest for the truth. His symbolic death enables him to discover his spiritual being, denied by a society which advocates an excessive exteriorisation of man's vision. By thus rediscovering the fundamental duality of man's being, the poet is symbolically reborn into an ancient wisdom, until then latent within him. The third part questions the nature and the role of artistic creation : morrison pushes syncretist theories to the extreme and by a transmutation of language, he endeavours to create a universal art summoning up all of man's resources. In this way he adheres to the alchemical and christian traditions by assimilating the artist firstly with the adept, receiver and transmitter of the hermetic message, and secondly with the apostle, "fisher of souls' and martyr

Full textThe relative anti-jam (AJ) performance of several diversity combiners are investigated. The modulation is 8-ary frequency-shift-keying (FSK), the demodulation process consists of energy detection of the eight frequency bins at each hop and the subsequent combining of detector outputs. Three combiners are considered : the linear combiner, where the detector outputs of each hop (corresponding to the same frequency bin) are summed without any processing; the self-normalized combiner, where the eight detector outputs of any particular hop are normalized so that they add to unity; and the max-normalized combiner, where the eight detector outputs of any hop are divided by the maximum value among those eight outputs. Results indicate that under worst-case tone jamming, the selfnormalized combiner performs the best, the max-normalized combiner second best, and the linear combiner performs the worst among the three.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is the result of an immersion in the work of J.M. Coetzee. I have taken various of Coetzee’s novels, namely Elizabeth Costello: Eight Lessons, Disgrace, The Master of Petersburg, Foe, Life & Times of Michael K and Slow Man, and constructed readings of these novels from the inside out. The overarching concern of the dissertation is the notion of subjectivity and Coetzee’s methods of representing subjectivity. It is my contestation that the experience of authentic subjective awareness arises from the process of reading itself. It is not a state of being that is described by the text, but rather a layered constellation of substitutive exchanges that emerges from the process of textual relation. The notion of embeddedness serves as a description of the way in which the text materializes this experience of subjectivity. The structure of exploration in each chapter has taken as its paradigm a conceptual concern arising from the text itself. In the first chapter (Elizabeth Costello) the concern is with structure itself. The character of Elizabeth struggles against the limitation inherent in the process of representation; this struggle is read as an indication of authentic subjective experience in the face of reduction to a system of codes. The second chapter (Disgrace) attempts to formulate the dynamic of subjective awareness in romantic terms. I construct a reading of Lurie’s predicament in terms that arise from his conceptual environment, in order to indicate the primacy of textual materiality as the locus of subjective awareness. The notion of the classic informs the third chapter (The Master of Petersburg). I use an essay by Coetzee to delineate a conception of the classic, which is then applied as a theoretical framework for an exploration of Dostoevsky’s pursuit of his stepson. The fourth and last chapter (Foe, Life & Times of Michael K and Slow Man) focuses on Coetzee’s use of the body as a figure for embedded subjectivity. It emerges that the body as a trope of embeddedness forms an important aspect of Coetzee’s work throughout his career. As such it is a very suitable figure for describing the dynamics of embeddedness as a mode of representation that aligns itself with the textual materiality of subjective being.
Coetzee.
