Abstract:
A new zirconia-toughened alumina ceramic (JMM-ZTA) for a ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacement has been developed. The JMM-ZTA has a fracture toughness superior to zirconia, and the JMM-ZTA/JMM-ZTA combination has superior wear-resistant performance to alumina/alumina. Moreover, the JMM-ZTA shows an excellent crystalline phase stability. Therefore, the JMM-ZTA is believed to be useful for artificial hip prostheses.

Abstract:
The JMM-ZTA, a kind of zirconia-toughened alumina, is a bearing ceramic newly developed for artificial joints. Although it has already been reported that mechanical strength and fracture toughness are higher in the JMM-ZTA than in alumina, the stability of the JMM-ZTA has not been studied in detail yet. In the present study, the stability of the JMM-ZTA with respect to mechanical strength and crystalline phases was examined under hydrothermal environment, and the results were compared with those of alumina. Both the 4-point bending strength and the fraction of monoclinic zirconia unchanged even after the aging test at 121°C for 300 h. These results indicate that the JMM-ZTA possesses quite excellent stability to be used as bearing material of artificial joints.

Abstract:
The phase stability under aqueous condition and changes in the wear region after the Pin-on-Flat wear testing were evaluated using Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques and X-ray diffractometry for a newly developed zirconia toughened alumina (JMM-ZTA). This study suggests that JMM-ZTA is a highly stable material under aqueous environment in the human body and has a high wear resistance in Pin-on-Flat wear tests. This results from a transformation toughening mechanism operative in JMM-ZTA. Therefore, JMM-ZTA appears to have a possibility to improve the performance of monolithic alumina as a material for hip and knee joint prostheses.

Abstract:
The demand of sweet corn in Indonesia has been increasing; therefore breeding efforts are aimed for high yielding sweet corn varieties with superior quality. This research was aimed to evaluate the yield of five newly developed sweet corn hybrids compared to the commercial varieties. The research was conducted at the Leuwikopo experimental field of IPB, and Laboratory of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, IPB Darmaga campus from September to December 2015. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized block design with three replications. Five new sweet corn hybrids, “ JM8 x JM2”, “JM8 x JM7”, “JM16 x JM8”, “JM17 x JM6” and “JM17 x JM7”, and four commercial varieties, “Bonanza”, “Master Sweet”, “Sugar 75” and “Sweet Boy”, were tested. The results showed that the new hybrids vary in plant height, days to anthesis, days to silking, ear height, ear length, sugar content, number of kernel rows, the weight of husked ear, and number of ears per plant, downy mildew infected area, and productivity. F1 of “JM8 x JM2” has longer ears than “Master Sweet” and “Sugar 75”, higher sugar content than “Sugar 75”, and higher resistance against downy mildew than “Master Sweet” and “Sweet Boy”.

International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology 54, no. 6 (November 1, 2004): 2241–44. http://dx.doi.org/10.1099/ijs.0.63059-0.

Abstract:
A strictly anaerobic arsenate-respiring bacterium isolated from a gold mine in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, belonging to the genus Bacillus is described. Cells are Gram-positive, motile rods capable of respiring with arsenate and nitrate as terminal electron acceptors using a variety of substrates, including acetate as the electron donor. Reduction of arsenate to arsenite is catalysed by a membrane-bound arsenate reductase that displays activity over a broad pH range. Synthesis of the enzyme is regulated; maximal activity is obtained when the organism is grown with arsenate as the terminal electron acceptor and no activity is detectable when it is grown with nitrate. Mass of the catalytic subunit was determined to be approximately 87 kDa based on ingel activity stains. The closest phylogenetic relative, based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, is Bacillus arseniciselenatis, but DNA–DNA hybridization experiments clearly show that strain JMM-4T represents a novel Bacillus species, for which the name Bacillus macyae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JMM-4T (=DSM 16346T=JCM 12340T).

Abstract:
The magmatic activity (0–16 Ma) in Iceland is linked to a deep mantle plume that has been active for the past 62 My. Icelandic and northeast Atlantic basalts contain variable proportions of two enriched components, interpreted as recycled oceanic crust supplied by the plume, and subcontinental lithospheric mantle derived from the nearby continental margins. A restricted area in southeast Iceland—and especially the Öræfajökull volcano—is characterized by a unique enriched-mantle component (EM2-like) with elevated 87Sr/86Sr and 207Pb/204Pb. Here, we demonstrate through modeling of Sr–Nd–Pb abundances and isotope ratios that the primitive Öræfajökull melts could have assimilated 2–6% of underlying continental crust before differentiating to more evolved melts. From inversion of gravity anomaly data (crustal thickness), analysis of regional magnetic data, and plate reconstructions, we propose that continental crust beneath southeast Iceland is part of ∼350-km-long and 70-km-wide extension of the Jan Mayen Microcontinent (JMM). The extended JMM was marginal to East Greenland but detached in the Early Eocene (between 52 and 47 Mya); by the Oligocene (27 Mya), all parts of the JMM permanently became part of the Eurasian plate following a westward ridge jump in the direction of the Iceland plume.

Full text
Abstract:
This article describes the joint measures method as a new powerful method for the development of a high performance multi-sensor data/image fusion scheme at the decision level. The images are received from distributed multiple sensors, which sense the targets in different spectral bands including visible, infrared, thermal and microwave. At first, we study the decision fusion methods, including voting schemes, rank based algorithm, Bayesian inference, and the Dempster-Shafer method. Then, we extract the mathematical properties of multi-sensor local classification results and use them for modeling of the classifier performances by the two new measures, i.e. the plausibility and correctness. Then we establish the plausibility and correctness distribution vectors and matrices for introducing the two improvements of the Dempster-Shafer method, i.e. the DS (CM) and DS (PM) methods. After that we introduce the joint measures decision fusion method based on using these two measures jointly. The Joint Measures Method (JMM) can deal with any decision fusion problem in the case of uncertain local classifiers results as well as clear local classifiers results. Finally, we deploy the new and previous methods for the fusion of the two different sets of multispectral image classification local results and we also compare their reliabilities, the commission errors and the omission errors. The results obviously show that the DS (PM), DS (CM) and JMM methods which use the special properties of the local classifiers and classes, have much better accuracies and reliabilities than other methods. In addition, we show that the reliability of the JMM is at least 3% higher than all other methods.
