Abstract:
Dealing with the relationships between the French connoisseurship and the Kingdom of Naples in building of one of the most modern archeological policies in Europe under Joseph Bonaparte and Joachim Murat's reigns, this doctorate takes a part in several fields of research in History (political and cultural), Art History and Archeology. It makes us look at the Antiquity through the prism of the XIX Century, trying at the same time to answer today’s questions of Art History about the archeological proveniences and the faith of the vases discovered in those years. In front of the large number of archeological discoveries made during the French Decade, we choose to focus our research on ancient painted vases. This homogeneous corpus leads us back to the discoveries and the history of archeological sites in the south of Italy during the years 1806-1815 by exploring ancient and unpublished archives. Their systematic sorting gives new information on the History of excavations, allowing us to find out the lost provenance of ancient vases, today conserved in several museums in Europe. With this original sources crossing, we aimed at offering a more complete vision of Naples during the French Decade by broadening the knowledge on the Southern Italian archeological History. Here stands the stake of a study at the confluences of different streams of History, looking at the Antiquity in the mirror of the first years of the XIX Century

Fang, Heng-Ching. "The twentieth-century revolution in string playing as reflected in the changing performing practices of viola players from Joseph Joachim to the present day : a practice-based study." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/646/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this Ph. D. is to investigate string performance practice issues in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century viola repertoires. The study will focus especially on the use of vibrato and portamento, as well as tempo modification and rhythm adjustment. This practice-based research involves a methodology which explores the close relationship between theory and practice. Chapter One outlines my methodology, reflecting on the philosophical approach that I have developed throughout my project. The content also describes the importance of first-hand experience, highlighting the link between psychology and qualitative method. These subjects are then developed in Chapter Two, which explores the early stage of my four-year journey of this research. I analyse my two `modern' recordings of Brahms' Sonatas for Viola and Piano, Op. 120, No. 1 and 2, demonstrating the way in which globalisation and modernised playing have dominated our perception and affected music production in the recording industry. Chapter Three examines primary sources, and related early recordings(1) together with secondary literature,(2) with reference to my interpretation of German-Romantic viola repertoires by Robert Schumann, Joseph Joachim and Johannes Brahms(3). My intention is to try to understand and apply Joachim's aesthetic to my playing. Chapter Four focuses upon Lionel Tertis' playing. Using Tertis' treatise, Beauty of Tone in String Playing,(4) as well as his complete Vocalion and Columbia recordings,(5) and fingerings from his edition, I develop and then criticise my own interpretation. In Chapter Five I examine the process through which I have developed my own taste as a historically-informed player. I consider my expectations for the future alongside literature related to interpretation. Details of the recorded portfolio are presented at the end of this thesis, including a description of each CD album, a list of the repertoire and the duration, recording date, instrumental equipment and setting, as well as the recording equipment, software and recording engineer. It is suggested that the reader uses the commentary with the recordings, or if preferred, listens to the recordings first and then uses the written text for detailed explanation regarding my approach to interpretation. 1 See Discography, p. 95-6. 2 See Bibliography, p. 91-4. 3 See Appendix I, pp. 97-102. 4 Lionel Tertis, Beauty of Tone in String Playing (London, 1938). 5 Lionel Tertis' complete Vocalion recordings, 1919-24, Biddulph 80219-2; and Columbia recordings, 1924-33, Biddulph 80216-2.

Uhde, Katharina Bozena Croissant. "Psychologische Musik, Joseph Joachim, and the Search for a New Music Aesthetic in the 1850s." Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/9059.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract

Exploring two main lines of inquiry, this dissertation investigates the style and aesthetic of the music of Joseph Joachim (1831-1907) and its references to composers such as Brahms, Liszt, Schumann, and Beethoven. First, rather than simply accepting the image of Joachim as the great nineteenth-century violinist and collaborator of Johannes Brahms who advocated the "canonization of the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms," I ask who Joachim was in light of his own compositions and literary circle. Especially significant was his "soul mate" Gisela von Arnim (daughter of Bettine von Arnim), from the second generation of two major literary "institutions" - the Grimm brothers and Arnim/Brentano, the Des Knaben Wunderhorn-collectors. Joachim and Gisela's literary role-play throws light on her function as his inspiration and muse. Second, each chapter investigates Joachim's works as "psychological music," the term he himself applied. Given that psychology was not yet an established academic discipline in the 1850s, Joachim's use of "psychological" is all the more intriguing.

Sources including archival letters, manuscripts, and Joachim's published correspondence, as well as his compositions from (or begun) in the 1850s, reveal that "psychological music" was both a compositional approach and an aesthetic. Extensively using ciphers, anagrams, song quotations, literary titles and allusions, and occasionally melodramatic elements, Joachim's compositional aesthetic conflicted with his "absolute" aesthetic as a violinist in the later 19th century.

Joachim's relatively strict use of form, his idiosyncratic use of "motivic transformation," and his expressive studies of literary/historical characters in his overtures separated him from Liszt. Furthermore, while Joachim navigated harmony in ways criticized by Louis Spohr and contemporary critics as "ear-tearing harshness" (1852), the composer maintained an almost consistently symmetrical ("four-square") syntax. Joachim's "psychological" aesthetic was typified by idiosyncratic, individual stylistic features like "trapped motives," captured by (sometimes obsessive) repetition, and he applied ciphers much more conspicuously than did Schumann. In the end, Joachim's "psychological music" displays three overarching features: first, extramusical programs from autobiographical and/or literary contexts; second, the implicit or explicit dedication of the works to Gisela von Arnim; and third, supporting correspondence marking the work as an "outlet" for Joachim's self-perceived, psychological inner turmoil.

Abstract:

Abstract:
80 percent of Clara Schumann‘s playbills in her complete collection of concert programmes (Robert-Schumann-Haus Zwickau) include vocal participation of solo singers, choirs or actors. The question is to which extent Clara Schumann used to accompany these vocal contributions herself on the piano. Only rarely are other accompanists named on the concert playbills, but evidence from concert reviews suggests that these vocal contributions normally served as rests for the solo pianist. Sometimes separate accompanists are named in the concert reviews. In orchestral concerts it was usually the conductor who accompanied solo songs on the piano, not the solo pianist. The Popular Concerts in St. James’s Hall in London were chamber concerts, which had a regular accompanist who was labelled as „conductor“ though there was no orchestra participating. These accompanists sometimes also performed with instrumentalists, e. g. basso continuo music from the 18th century or piano reductions of orchestral concerts.

Reid, Heather A. "The Storie of Asneth and its literary relations: the Bride of Christ tradition in late Medieval England." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/3518.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of the fifteenth-century, “Storie of Asneth,” a late-medieval English translation of a Jewish Hellenistic romance about the Patriarch, Joseph, and his Egyptian wife, Asneth (also spelled Aseneth, Asenath). Belonging to the collection of stories known as The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha and derived from Jewish Midrash, the story was widely read among medieval religious in England in Latin before being translated into the vernacular for devotional purposes. Part of this study considers and identifies the aristocratic female patron (Elizabeth Berkeley) and author (John Walton) of the fifteenth-century Middle English text, based on literary, historical, and manuscript evidence from the sole surviving copy of the text in Huntington Library EL.26.A.13, a manuscript once owned by John Shirley. Also explored is the ritualistic pattern of events in the text (original to its Hellenistic origins) that coincides with ancient female initiation rites as we understand them from recent studies of Greek mythology. Centred in the narrative, culminating Asneth’s liminal seclusion, is her sacred marriage with a heavenly being. The argument suggests that in the Middle Ages this sacred consummation would have been interpreted as the union of God with the soul, similar to the love union in the Song of Songs. In the Christian tradition it is referred to as mystical marriage. Early Christian exegesis supports that Joseph was considered a prefigurement of Christ in the Middle Ages. In her role as divine consort and Joseph’s wife, Asneth would also have been identified as a type of Ecclesia in the Middle Ages—the symbolic bride of Christ. Patterns of female initiation in the story are also reflected in the hagiographical accounts of female saints, female mystics, and the ritual consecration of nuns to their orders, especially where they focus on marriage to Christ. The similarity of Asneth with Ecclesia, and therefore Asneth’s identity as a type of the church in the Middle Ages, is then explored in the context of the theology of the twelfth-century Cistercian prophet, Joachim of Fiore. The thirteenth-century Canterbury manuscript, Cambridge Corpus Christi College MS 288 (CCCC MS 288), which holds a Latin copy of Asneth also contains one of the earliest Joachite prophecies in England, known as Fata Monent. The study suggests Asneth may have held theological currency for early followers of Joachim of Fiore in England.
