Abstract:
This paper sets out to describe the circumstances in which Joan Coromines carried out the work on his Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano. It reviews the different phases of research and work process, from the initial time-consuming labour of bringing to light a very extensive bibliography – a task begun in an unfavourable context in 1940 – to the composition of the last of the dictionary’s entries at the end of 1951. The paper also offers a comprehensive view of the way in which the Catalan philologist met this scholarly challenge and the results he achieved. Keywords: Coromines / Corom

Caro Baroja suggested that Basque arragua ‘melting pot’ goes back etymologically to arrugia ‘gallery in a mine’, a word mentioned by Pliny. This totally aberrant etymology is mentioned by Coromines in both the DCELC and the DCECEH. For laude ‘burial stone’, he follows Covarrubias in accepting laudem ‘praise’, but the more plausible etymology is lapidem ‘stone’. However, when it comes to the etymology of matar ‘to kill’, Coromines rejects Covarrubias’ proposal mactare on behalf of implausible phonetic change; however, mactare was a very popular word, and, despite Coromines’ rejection, has to be

Summary: The epistolary relationship between Joan Coromines (Barcelona, 1905 – Pi-neda de Mar, 1997) and Joan Sales (Barcelona, 1912–1983) documents how Sales actively collaborated in the collection of toponymic materials for the Onomasticon Cataloniae in municipalities and parishes of the Camp de Tarragona, Muntanyes de Prades and the Segarra. Joan Sales reported to Coromines his routes and the difficulties that he encountered in these areas. A result of the surveys carried out in these sites is the collection of Vallclara (Tarragona) presented in our work. [Keywords: Joan Coromines; Joan Sal

Abstract:
The critics have been unanimous in their opinion that, independently of his scientific value, Coromines has to be considered an excellent writer in Catalan, both in the way of developing his thinking and in his use of particular words, phrases and constructions. However, with a few exceptions, these opinions have never been founded on actual examples. The present paper gathers a few of these opinions and tries to provide specific evidence for them, derived from the two great dictionaries of the author. Keywords: Joan Coromines, writer, style, literary language.

Abstract:
“Els altres valencians”, ‘the Other Valencians’, a phrase inspired by an expression in Joan Fuster’s (1962) Nosaltres, els valencians, alludes to the singularity that characterizes the traditionally Spanish-speaking population in the Valencian territory. The present article aims at illustrating the way that Joan Coromines’ DECat and DCECH treat the lexicon of these ‘other Valencians’. It shows that Coromines uses the label xurro to refer to the corresponding dialects, their speakers and to the territory. The article provides information on (printed and oral) sources used by the etymologist, as
