Resident progenitor cells in mammalian skin generate new cells as a part of tissue homeostasis. We sought to identify the progenitors of Merkel cells, a unique skin cell type that plays critical roles in mechanosensation. We found that some Atoh1-expressing cells in the hairy skin and whisker follicles are mitotically active at embryonic and postnatal ages. Genetic fate-mapping revealed that these Atoh1-expressing cells give rise solely to Merkel cells. Furthermore, selective ablation of Atoh1+ skin cells in adult mice led to a permanent reduction in Merkel cell numbers, demonstrating that oth

Critics who viewed David French’s three earlier plays about the Mercer family as a “trilogy” will no doubt be expanding it to a “tetralogy” with the appearance of 1949. But this play makes very clear what should have been evident before: the Mercer plays do not constitute a unified saga portraying the fortunes of a single family through time, but are rather a set of variations on a theme, in which French’s family myth is embodied in a series of plays of different styles and involving different characters, although some of these characters share names and a few basic personality traits. Merkel cells (MCs) are located in the touch-sensitive area of the epidermis and mediate mechanotransduction in the skin. Whether MCs originate from embryonic epidermal or neural crest progenitors has been a matter of intense controversy since their discovery >130 yr ago. In addition, how MCs are maintained during adulthood is currently unknown. In this study, using lineage-tracing experiments, we show that MCs arise through the differentiation of epidermal progenitors during embryonic development. In adults, MCs undergo slow turnover and are replaced by cells originating from epidermal

Abstract:
While the dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) techniques are efficient in reducing the dynamic energy consumption for the processor, varying voltage alone becomes less effective for the overall power reduction as the leakage power is growing rapidly, i.e., five times per technical generation as predicted. On the other hand, Quality of Service (QoS) is also a primary concern in the development of today’s pervasive computing systems. In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the overall energy consumption for soft real-time systems while ensuring the QoS-guarantee. In our research, the QoS req

In an ideal world, review and changes to computing curricula should be driven solely by academic concerns for the needs of students. The process should be informed by industry accreditation processes and international best practice (Hurst et al., 2001). However, Australian computing curricular review is often driven by the need for financial viability of programs with declining student numbers as much as concerns for academic merit. Worldwide there remains a strong job market and high demand for computing professionals (Liu, 2007; Melymuka, 2006), which predicates an impending IT workforce sho

This paper contends that Sayaka Murata’s novel Convenience Store Women offers a perceptive and critical examination of the impact of the economic recession of the 1990s on the social character of labour and everyday life in contemporary society. Through the lens of the novel's protagonist, Keiko, a freeter who has spent eighteen years in a part-time job at a konbini, the novel illustrates the precarious living conditions and lack of job security experienced by young, unmarried individuals in post-recession Japan. Introduction. Teacher’s job is considered to be not attractive as it contains emotional strain and stress and schools in Lithuania face a shortage of teachers (TALIS, 2018; Merkys & Balčiūnas, 2019). Research on the social emotional health and resilience of teachers is important, especially in the face of the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Research on social emotional health and resilience of Lithuanian teachers was conducted as part of the ERASMUS+ project ‘Supporting teachers to face the challenge of distance teaching’ (2020-1-LV01-KA226-SCH-094599). Abstract:
California High-Speed Rail (CHSR) will largely change transportation cost across the state after it starts operating. Past studies show that only Fresno and Merced among station cities in the Central Valley would attract more future activities with the CHSR. The establishment of active CHSR also implies a new daily living sphere for all the station cities, and, therefore, accessibility to work and residential amenities should be reviewed to inform planners of future land-use and transportation developments. A research framework has been developed better to understand the impact of CHSR on job

High-quality official statistics--from inflation to poverty rates--are essential for effective policymaking. Yet, little is known about the statistics officials who produce this statistical data. How competent are they at statistics? How motivated and ethical are they when producing statistics? And do National Statistical Offices (NSOs) manage them effectively? The answers are central to improving statistical capacity. Nonetheless, NSOs have not developed systematic measurement instruments to identify them. This pioneering publication addresses this gap.
