Resident progenitor cells in mammalian skin generate new cells as a part of tissue homeostasis. We sought to identify the progenitors of Merkel cells, a unique skin cell type that plays critical roles in mechanosensation. We found that some Atoh1-expressing cells in the hairy skin and whisker follicles are mitotically active at embryonic and postnatal ages. Genetic fate-mapping revealed that these Atoh1-expressing cells give rise solely to Merkel cells. Furthermore, selective ablation of Atoh1+ skin cells in adult mice led to a permanent reduction in Merkel cell numbers, demonstrating that oth

Critics who viewed David French’s three earlier plays about the Mercer family as a “trilogy” will no doubt be expanding it to a “tetralogy” with the appearance of 1949. But this play makes very clear what should have been evident before: the Mercer plays do not constitute a unified saga portraying the fortunes of a single family through time, but are rather a set of variations on a theme, in which French’s family myth is embodied in a series of plays of different styles and involving different characters, although some of these characters share names and a few basic personality traits. The extrapolation of biological damage from a biomechanical model requires that a closed-form mathematical damage threshold function (DTF) be included in the model. A DTF typically includes a generic load variable, being the critical load (e.g., pressure, strain, temperature) causing irreversible tissue or cell damage, and a generic time variable, which represents the exposure to the load (e.g., duration, strain rate). Despite the central role that DTFs play in biomechanical studies, there is no coherent literature on how to formulate a DTF, excluding the field of heat-induced damage studies.
