Abstract:
The search for a community practice-oriented job can be at once exciting and overwhelming, especially if it is your first job out of graduate school. Because the skill set and perspective of a community psychologist can be applied in a growing number of applied settings, the largest challenge is not in finding job opportunities outside of academia but rather in selling yourself in a non–community psychology world. Creativity and flexibility during the job search will prove to be valuable in identifying organizations and positions with roles that can be filled successfully by community psychologists. After identifying organizations and positions that align with your interests, it is vital to translate your competencies, experience, and values to match the job description and organization, and to demonstrate your ability to work with colleagues from different backgrounds. This chapter highlights aspects of the job search that are unique for practice (in contrast to academic) jobs, with the goal of serving as a resource for individuals as they begin to think about potential careers in community psychology practice.

Abstract:
This essential guide explains how to find satisfaction in the workplace in the face of imperfections involving oneself and others. The Undreaded Job: Learning to Thrive in a Less-than-Perfect Workplace was written to help people find satisfaction in the workplace, turning work into a major contributor to overall happiness. The book is organized around issues individuals face as they try to thrive in the face of inevitable workplace imperfections. These include imperfections in the leaders for whom they work and the colleagues with whom they interact. The book also covers the influence of one's own thinking processes and those of others, power and political sophistication in the workplace, worker motivation, development and change, workplace diversity, social skills, and the communication challenges that arise as people pursue different or conflicting goals. The author, an expert in both psychology and management, reviews research on these topics as it relates to workplace satisfaction and life happiness. Each chapter explains research findings in ways that translate them into key concepts applicable in any workplace, at any level.

Cochrane, Alasdair. Sentientist Democracy. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198789802.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 3 asks what kinds of institutions are needed to protect the worth and rights of sentient creatures. The chapter’s ultimate claim is that they are best protected by democratic institutions: that is, institutions which are participative, deliberative, and representative, and underpinned by a set of entrenched rights. Crucially, the chapter further argues that those institutions should be comprised of dedicated animal representatives. The job of those representatives should be to act as trustees of the interests of ‘animal members’ of the political community. In other words, their job should be to translate the interests of animals with whom we share a ‘community of fate’ into their deliberations with other representatives over what is in the public good.

McGonagle, Alyssa K. Chronic Health Conditions and Work. Oxford University PressNew York, NY, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1093/9780197660669.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract People with chronic health conditions (CHCs) make up a large and integral part of the workforce. And while few would deny that CHCs can create challenges for both workers and their employing organizations, there are misperceptions about how best to support affected employees. Typical supports that organizations have historically used (including wellness programs and return-to-work programs) are insufficient to meet the underrecognized needs of employees with CHCs. This book translates research and provides practical solutions and steps for implementing a more proactive, integrated approach to help leaders and frontline managers better support their employees, and to help organizations gain a competitive advantage through attracting and retaining them. This book provides background information on CHCs, disabilities, the legal landscape, and typical supports organizations have historically used (Part I), followed by information on complex and common work–health challenges faced by employees, managers, and organizations (Part II). Part III provides proactive solutions that leaders, frontline managers, human resource professionals, coaches, consultants, and other practitioners can enact at the levels of the organization (culture, benefits, policies), the job (autonomy, flexibility, supervisor support, job accommodations), and the individual employee (coaching, mentoring, group programs). Readers will take away from this book a comprehensive understanding of both the importance of, and how to implement, changes at all three of these levels to decrease stigma and promote employee well-being, inclusion, and work ability. Readers will also gain tools to help them make a business case for taking a more proactive approach to supporting employees with CHCs.

Saaler, Sven, and Christopher W. A. Szpilman. Pan-Asianism. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2011. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798881815684.

Full text
Abstract:
This first volume in a two-volume set provides the only comprehensive, Western-language history of Pan-Asianism through primary sources and commentaries. The book argues that Pan-Asianism, often—though unfairly—associated with the Yellow Peril, has been a powerful political and ideological force in modern Asia. It has shaped national identities and strongly influenced the development of international relations across Asia and the Pacific. Scholars have long recognized the importance of Pan-Asianism as an ideal of Asian solidarity, regional cooperation, and integration but also as an ideology that justified imperialist expansion and military aggression. Yet sustained research has been hampered by the difficulty of accessing primary sources. Thoroughly remedying this problem, this unique sourcebook provides a wealth of documents on Pan-Asianism from 1850 to 1920, many translated for the first time from Asian languages. All sources are accompanied by expert commentaries that provide essential background information. Providing an essential overview of Pan-Asianism as it developed throughout modern Asia, this collection will be an indispensable tool for scholars in history, political science, international relations, and sociology. Its accessible presentation makes it a valuable resource for non-specialists as well. Contributions by: Cemil Aydin, Yuan P. Thoms, Peg, and James F. Fairbank. The Daily Art of Management. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400636660.

Full text
Abstract:
Effective managers matter to an organization. After all, they translate strategy into action and motivate the people they lead. But managers are sometimes less than effective, ending up in positions of authority and responsibility due to technical competence, company growth, or serendipity. Unprepared, they often lack key skills. Or, like so many managers promoted due to stellar job performance, they may have trouble understanding and motivating other people. Managers thrust into roles of authority need grounding in the fundamentals of management. And that's exactly what management experts Peg Thoms and Jim Fairbank deliver: The Daily Art of Management is the mentor at a manager's shoulder, full of excellent advice and encouragement. Most advice to managers consists of general prescriptions: Be inspiring, Drive innovation, or Beat the competition through crisp execution. Great, but how? It's not easy doing any of these things. This book, which draws on the experience of Thoms and Fairbank as well as their research on management behavior, closes the gap between the idealized leader and reality—the gap between book learning and street smarts. It shows managers and aspiring leaders at all levels of the organization how to master ten key roles and practice them on a daily basis. Examples and practical guidelines reinforce the concepts and serve as a handy resource for anyone interested in the art and science of effective management. In this book, managers will learn how to: -Set goals -Create an ethical environment -Create a vision -Select and motivate followers -Manage change -Handle competitors . . . and other critical skills effective managers employ to get the job done with style. The Daily Art of Management covers the issues managers face every day—but for which they are rarely trained.

Cochrane, Alasdair. Sentientist Politics. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198789802.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
There is now widespread agreement that many non-human animals are sentient, and that this fact has important moral and political implications. Indeed, most are in agreement that animal sentience ought to constrain the actions of political institutions, limiting the harms that can be perpetrated against animals. The primary aim of this book is to show that the political implications of animal sentience go even further than this. For this book argues that sentience establishes a moral equality and a shared set of rights amongst those creatures who possess it. Crucially, this worth and these rights create a duty on moral agents to establish and maintain a political order dedicated to their interests. This book is devoted to sketching what this ‘sentientist politics’ might look like. It argues in favour of a ‘sentientist cosmopolitan democracy’: a global political system made up of overlapping local, national, regional, and global communities comprised of human and non-human members who exist within shared ‘communities of fate’. Furthermore, the institutions of those communities should be democratic—that is to say, participative, deliberative, and representative. Finally, those institutions should include dedicated representatives of non-human animals whose job should be to translate the interests of animals into deliberations over what is in the public good for their communities.

Mishan, E. Thirteen Persistent Economic Fallacies. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216025610.

Full text
Abstract:
E. J. Mishan, an iconoclastic economist who has taught at such schools as the London School of Economics and the New School for Social Research, is in this volume a provocateur, smashing staunchly held beliefs of the right (free trade and common markets are good for the economy), and the left (local jobs are always lost when factories close down, pay disparity between men and women signifies discrimination). He also pokes holes in the accepted wisdom held by all, arguing for example that economic growth does not necessarily improve lives. Those who believe the fallacies Mishan exposes to the light of reason in this book are, however, neither ignorant nor careless. The fallacies are all plausible, and intelligent people can be forgiven for believing them. Mishan simply wants readers to see these thirteen popular, persistent fallacies for what they are: Humbug. Mishan’s scintillating text is apolitical. In arguing that immigration does not benefit a country's economy, for example, he is not arguing in favor of restricting immigration. Rather, his goal is to test the assumptions behind the dearly held positions of both the left and the right or to expose what he calls the breathtaking fatuity that counts as wisdom these days. Mishan wants to interject common sense and logic into today's debates over the economy and, especially, the political arguments that translate into legislation that has a negative impact on people. Mishan’s ideas breathe new life into debates gone stale by ideology. As he notes, the fallacies in this volume travel in the highest circles, from debates in Congress to the pages of the Wall Street Journal, Time, and The Economist. Most are things everybody knows. He hopes, therefore, to expose the concerned citizen to the shock-treatment of discovering that much of what passes for conventional economic wisdom is in fact fallacious. As the Economist pointed out in its glowing review of the first edition of this book, Dr. Mishan has written the perfect book for anyone wishing to start the study of economics.

Kurtzberg, Terri R. Virtual Teams. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216032564.

Full text
Abstract:
To advance in today's workplace requires virtual team skills. Most individuals assume their face-to-face skills will translate, but competency with virtual communication and teamwork requires an entirely new set of skills. This book guides readers down the path to success. Electronic communication is now embedded in our daily experience, as is work involving off-site collaborators. Virtual communication has become an essential job skill that is critical to individual and group success, yet most people just muddle through it without giving it any thought. Drawing on decades of scientific research in the fields of psychology, organizational behavior, and sociology, this book explains how to master the art and science of communicating virtually. The author first analyzes the subtle but significant changes that result when conversations are moved online, providing examples and tips to avoid common pitfalls, then discusses how team behavior and decision making can best be guided in this realm. Readers will fully understand what makes teams "click"—what inspires trust, how to get a team "off on the right foot," and what steps to take in order to make good collaborative decisions—as well as other key topics for virtual teamwork, such as best practices for working in the cross-cultural environment. The book serves as an ideal guide for anyone who participates in or manages a virtual team but is also suitable as a supplemental textbook in a business school course on organizational behavior or business communication.

Clarke, Victoria, and Andrew Walsh, eds. Fundamentals of Mental Health Nursing. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199547746.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to provide sound, person-centred care, mental health nursing students need a thorough understanding of theory alongside the ability to translate this knowledge into practice. It can be difficult to apply ideas from the classroom and books when learning how to work with mental health service users for the first time. That is why the theoretical aspects of this book are presented alongside realistic accounts of nursing practice. Fundamentals of Mental Health Nursing is a case-based and service user centred textbook for mental health nursing students. Designed to support students throughout their pre-registration studies, the text covers the essential knowledge required to provide high quality nursing care. Contributions from real service users and cases of fictional clients are explored in detail to provide excellent transferable skills for practice. Dedicated chapters explore fundamental nursing skills and mental health law before providing a case-based exploration of the areas and subjects that will be encountered by students in university and placement. Practice-based chapters introduce students to the needs of a diverse range of fictional clients and explain how the skills of communication, assessment, care planning and monitoring can be applied. Each chapter provides a sample care plan explaining why and how clinical decisions are made, so that students can develop their own skills and practice. The text opens with clear advice to help students succeed in their studies and concludes with a wealth of practical and thoughtful advice on becoming a professional and getting that first job. Online Resource Centre * Twenty one video clips of fictional service users demonstrate the application of theory and prepare students for real nursing practice * Quizzes, scenarios and a range of activities help students to apply their learning * Interactive glossary explains terminology and jargon * Sample CV's and self awareness exercises aid professional development
