Abstract:
Self-translators are often granted freedoms in their translations unimaginable for standard translators. Whereas a standard translation usually prizes sameness (or invisibility as Lawrence Venuti argues), the self-translator may instead highlight difference or disruption. A burgeoning subfield of criticism has outlined the ways in which one of the most famous of these self-translators, Samuel Beckett, makes use of his role as translator to further the reach of his work beyond the constraints of a monolingual text. Whereas most of this criticism has taken aim at Beckett's prose and theater, this essay asks what can be gleaned about Beckett's translation style from his early poetry. Here I focus on Beckett's four-line, untitled poem which begins ‘je voudrais que mon amour meure’ (‘I would like my love to die’). Originally published in 1948 in the bilingual journal Transition Forty-eight, this poem would go on to be edited, translated, reedited, and retranslated over the course of nearly thirty years. The various iterations and translations of the poem are not always harmonious and instead force the reader to consider more deeply the themes of the poem and to question the role of translation. I read the poem in light of Beckett's 1934 essay ‘Recent Irish Poetry’ as well as consider it in response to W.B. Yeats' 1899 poem ‘He Wishes His Beloved Were Dead’. By situating the poem in this context, I argue that this poem is a manifestation of Beckett's argument in the essay that poetry must take into account the division between poet and object. His short poem demonstrates this division as well as that between original and translation and thus allows us a window onto his translation project at large. Considering Beckett's poetic translation permits us to consider how a complementarity of intention towards language does not necessarily entail complementary translations.

Abstract:
This study discusses gender bias in terms of language especially from Indonesian into English translation by using Google Translate. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The result shows that most likely every language has gender-biased sides, including English because the type of society in the reality of life is more represented by men and women. In Google translate, the unequal differences between men and women translated into google translate causes the system to be considered biased and sexist towards gender. Whereas in fact, nowadays all genders can have various activities and jobs. Indonesian is also a gender-neutral language. When google translates to change into English, the sentence becomes gendered. The Indonesian language in this case seems to have been saved from being sexist because it does not associate a particular profession or activity with any gender. Unlike English, which adjusts personal pronouns based on gender. Google Translate is not always accurate, especially when translating from English to other languages. That is where Google Translate tends to go astray. The problem is that many languages have gender-based words, whereas English does not. But some words, like profession or occupation, can be masculine or feminine depending on the subject of the sentence, by assigning gender to certain adjectives and words that describe them. Equality in gender and race has been very difficult to achieve in machine technology situations because these systems are trained on existing content, and are not demographically representative. Google decided to make changes. It is important to adapt and build technology that can better serve humans. What may seem like small changes to everyday life are big steps towards gender equality. The way people speak their respective languages is one of the strongest ways of gender discrimination.

AbstractIn this paper we take on Stuart C. Shapiro's challenge of solving the Jobs Puzzle automatically and do this via controlled natural language processing. Instead of encoding the puzzle in a formal language that might be difficult to use and understand, we employ a controlled natural language as a high-level specification language that adheres closely to the original notation of the puzzle and allows us to reconstruct the puzzle in a machine-processable way and add missing and implicit information to the problem description. We show how the resulting specification can be translated into an answer set program and be processed by a state-of-the-art answer set solver to find the solutions to the puzzle.

Abstract:
Revisiting the romantic myth of the isolated man of letters in his Ussy-Ivory Tower, this chapter highlights some of the translatory collaborative processes in which Beckett was involved. Barbara Bray, whom Beckett met at the BBC in 1956, was then a script editor. At the BBC she translated, adapted and produced a great many texts from the French language. Beckett offered his help with this, as is testified by his lengthy and detailed remarks on Bray’s version of The Square by Duras in an unpublished 1957 letter. In return, it is likely he was influenced by Duras through the agency of Bray. What is more, the correspondence attests to the fact that Bray extensively and systematically helped Beckett with self-translating. Investigation of this collaborative translation highlights the minoritising process (Deleuze) that the art of (self-)translation involved for both Bray and Beckett via Duras.

Abstract This article evaluates the significance of Russian soft power in Estonia, particularly in connection to the minority issue, and compares this soft power to the countervailing pull of the European Union on the other side. It concludes that although Russia does indeed have a number of soft power resources, their potential for being translated into actual power and influence is too often exaggerated, not least because Europe provides a much more attractive focus point for the disgruntled than Moscow. Moreover, Estonia has it fully within its power to bolster its own attractiveness in the eyes of the minority populations. Thus, although relations with Russia should be handled with care, it is not Russia’s soft power that should be feared.

ToyoshiYoshihara. Though he isn’t a household name in Canada, he ought to be – at least among those who value Canadian theatre. Because this slight, retiring Japanese gentleman has literally translated his passion for Canadian plays into a thriving theatre industry in Japan. Case in point: nine of his translations are being produced in Japan in 2009, eight of which are Canadian plays: Anne Chislett’s Another Season’s Promise, Wajdi Mouawad’s Scorched and Carole Frechette’s John and Beatrice, all of which are receiving their Japanese premieres; Colin Thomas’s One Thousand Cranes, George F. Walker’s Filthy Rich, Frank Moher’s Odd Jobs and Lee MacDougall’s High Life; and Sharon Pollock’s Blood Relations, which, along with Scorched, will be the first Canadian play their Japanese producers have ever programmed. And those are just eight of the forty-three Canadian works he’s translated over the years, along with nineteen British, American, South African and Australian playwrights.

Due to its importance the top governmental level asked the educational institutes officially to enhance the entrepreneur abilities off the continuously growing number of more than 500.000 students/ year. Being always near to students as visiting Prof, trainer in entrepreneur workshops, and speaker at international and national conferences I was frustrated about what I felt desperate, partially useless approaches -because purely academia driven or only for the upper class accessible - to address this crucial topic for a more economical and sustainable development of Pakistan. Abstract:
Virtual screening through molecular docking can be translated into an optimization problem, which can be tackled with metaheuristic methods. The interaction between two chemical compounds (typically a protein, enzyme or receptor, and a small molecule, or ligand) is calculated by using highly computationally demanding scoring functions that are computed at several binding spots located throughout the protein surface. This paper introduces METADOCK, a novel molecular docking methodology based on parameterized and parallel metaheuristics and designed to leverage heterogeneous computers based on heterogeneous architectures. The application decides the optimization technique at running time by setting a configuration schema. Our proposed solution finds a good workload balance via dynamic assignment of jobs to heterogeneous resources which perform independent metaheuristic executions when computing different molecular interactions required by the scoring functions in use. A cooperative scheduling of jobs optimizes the quality of the solution and the overall performance of the simulation, so opening a new path for further developments of virtual screening methods on high-performance contemporary heterogeneous platforms.

Full text
Abstract:
The word ‘continuum’ invokes a controversy that endured for more than two millennia. Aristotle contended in his Physics that a continuum (such as length, time or movement) cannot be constituted by indivisibles nor be resolved into them. Though Augustine decreed the thought of Epicurus long dead, interest in Atomism persisted into the late medieval period, long before its ‘rediscovery’ in the Renaissance. Given Beckett's marked empathy for Atomism, and the wide assumption that Atomism anticipated the radical paradigm shifts of the new physics of his day, a scrutiny of this School and of ‘the incoherent continuum’ is warranted. Beckett found in Leibniz a compelling image of how the ‘soul’ (the self conceived as an atomist monad) might reify its relation to the contingent world; and in Windelband a sense of the petites perceptions as unconscious mental states that translated his aesthetic from an attractive but unsatisfactory Atomism to a monadic awareness in which indivisibles are simultaneously limited (indivisibilities of substantial form) and unlimited (a continuum infinitely divisible). The advantage of the Monad over the Atom, with respect to medieval disputes over the nature of the physical continuum or its existence as discrete or continuous, was that he did not need to commit himself to either the physical or the metaphysical, as the continuum could be simultaneously ‘both’ and/or ‘neither’.

Abstract:
This essay closely inspects the manuscript cluster relating to The North (held by the Beckett International Foundation, University of Reading) to provide insight into Beckett's collaboration with Enitharmon Press and its publisher, Alan Clodd, on an eponymous livre d'artiste illustrated with three etchings by Avikdor Arikha. It outlines the intricate publication details of a short excerpt from (then unfinished) Le Dépeupleur, which was the first part of the late prose text to be translated by Beckett into English. With the help of Beckett's published and unpublished correspondence with Clodd, Arikha, and Barbara Bray in particular, the essay traces the translation process of both The North and what was to become The Lost Ones. Extending over several months, the translation of the short novel gave Beckett considerable trouble and, as appears from his letters to Bray, her involvement in it was tangible. Beckett's linguistic choices surrounding the image of a crouching woman at the centre of this limited-edition artist's book and the English title of the master text, The Lost Ones, are also considered in relation to other art forms, namely Auguste Rodin's Dante-inspired La porte de l'enfer and the statue extracted from it, La femme accroupie. In addition to that, the publication particulars of the Calder & Boyars edition of The Lost Ones (1972) are discussed in parallel to those of Clodd's The North (1973), unearthing the differences between the two translations as well as contractual obligations that shaped them.

Abstract:
This is a book that, within the framework of studies on masculinities and paternities in our country, offers a perspective on a little explored dimension: the implications of the presence and absence of men, as fathers, in the life, daily life and relationships of the diversity of family arrangements that we can currently find. Both the theoretical elaboration that serves as an introduction to the book, as well as the particular studies that comprise it, offer a broad panorama of the ways in which, during the last few years, different social actors that make up family arrangements in our country live, experience, signify and re-signify the presence and absence of men as fathers. Absences due to issues as dissimilar as death, confinement, divorce and time absorbed by their jobs. Finally, these studies offer elements to rethink, theoretically, the emotional experiences and formative processes of people; formative in a broad sense, beyond the school as an institution, located in contexts of informal education, with all the complexity that this entails (Salguero & Yoseff, 2020). Abstract:
Abstract Objectives To estimate the level of agreement and identify notable differences in occupational exposures (agents) between men and women from retrospective assessments by expert coders. Methods Lifetime occupational histories of 1657 men and 2073 women from two case–control studies, were translated into exposure estimates to 243 agents, from data on 13882 jobs. Exposure estimates were summarized as proportions and frequency-weighted intensity of exposure for 59 occupational codes by sex. Agreement between metrics of exposure in men’s and women’s jobs was determined with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and weighted Kappa coefficients, using as unit of analysis (‘cell’) a combination of occupational code and occupational agent. ‘Notable’ differences between men and women were identified for each cell, according to a Bayesian hierarchical model for both proportion and frequency-weighted intensity of exposure. Results For cells common to both men and women, the ICC for continuous probability of exposure was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.83–0.84) and 7.4% of cells showed notable differences with jobs held by men being more often exposed. A weighted kappa of 0.67 (95% CI: 0.61–0.73) was calculated for intensity of exposure, and an ICC of 0.67 (95% CI: 0.62–0.71) for frequency-weighted intensity of exposure, with a tendency of higher values of exposure metrics in jobs held by men. Conclusions Exposures were generally in agreement between men and women. Some notable differences were identified, most of them explained by differential sub-occupations or industries or dissimilar reported tasks within the studied occupations.

Abstract:
Little has been written about Suzanne Beckett, née Suzanne Déchevaux-Dumesnil (1900–1989). In biographies of Samuel Beckett, and in the even more numerous memoirs and commentaries discussing Beckett’s life, Suzanne disappears quickly – sometimes as soon as she is evoked – and she has rarely been acknowledged as someone who led a rich and interesting life in her own right. Her maiden name, Déchevaux-Dumesnil, has been widely and persistently misspelt as ‘Deschevaux-Dumesnil’ or ‘Déschevaux-Dumesnil’, although it appears just above Beckett’s own name on their tombstone at the Montparnasse Cemetery – a tombstone visited by so many, and photographed so often. The most caricatural portrayals render her as someone who complains when he receives the Nobel Prize, squanders his money and hinders his aspiration to have a good time. Overall, based on some accounts, it can be difficult to understand how a writer like Beckett would have wanted to spend his life with her and why their relationship lasted over fifty years. This biographical essay written by Michèle Tholozan-Warluzel, Suzanne’s great-niece, and translated by Emilie Morin, gives us a fuller view of this remarkable person. Suzanne, Michèle Tholozan-Warluzel tells us, had no time for sentimentality; she inhabited the here and now; she believed that women should be liberated from the weight of conventions; she held the institution of marriage in profound contempt; she felt passionately about the preservation of human and animal life; she frequented concert halls, museums and theatres assiduously throughout her life and loved Paris deeply. She was much loved by her family and friends. This biographical essay brings to life a strikingly modern woman, who seems in some ways better suited to our time than hers.

Abstract:
The United States environmental horticulture industry, also known as the Green Industry, is comprised of wholesale nursery and sod growers; landscape architects, designers/builders, contractors, and maintenance firms; retail garden centers, home centers, and mass merchandisers with lawn and garden departments; and marketing intermediaries such as brokers and horticultural distribution centers (re-wholesalers). Environmental horticulture is one of the fastest growing segments of the nation's agricultural economy. In spite of the magnitude and recent growth in the Green Industry, there is surprisingly little information regarding its economic impact. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate the economic impacts of the Green Industry at the national level. Economic impacts for the U.S. Green Industry in 2002 were estimated at $147.8 billion in output, 1,964,339 jobs, $95.1 billion in value added, $64.3 billion in labor income, and $6.9 billion in indirect business taxes, with these values expressed in 2004 dollars. In addition, this study evaluated the value and role of urban forest trees (woody ornamental trees); the total output of tree production and care services was valued at $14.55 billion, which translated into $21.02 billion in total output impacts, 259,224 jobs, and $14.12 billion in value added.

Abstract:
Modeling and kinematic analysis are crucial jobs in robotics that entail identifying the position of the robot’s joints in order to accomplish particular tasks. This article uses an algebraic approach to model the kinematics of a serial link, 5 degrees of freedom (DOF) manipulator. The analytical method is compared to an optimization strategy known as sequential least squares programming (SLSQP). Using an Intel RealSense 3D camera, the colored object is picked up and placed using vision-based technology, and the pixel location of the object is translated into robot coordinates. The LOBOT LX15D serial bus servo controller was used to transmit these coordinates to the robotic arm. Python3 programming language was used throughout the entire analysis. The findings demonstrated that both analytical and optimized inverse kinematic solutions correctly identified colored objects and positioned them in their appropriate goal points.

The increase in fathers’ involvement in childcare in Western societies has not translated into an equal distribution of childcare between mothers and fathers. While some couples actually succeed in “undoing gender” when the first child arrives, their characteristics that define them are not yet clear. This article provides four different explanations that contribute to understanding how parents share routine care in Spain, using a sample of dual-earner, heterosexual parents from the Spanish Time Use Survey 2010. The results show that fathers are more likely to be “equal sharers” when they earn less than their spouse; do not hold traditionally masculine jobs (e.g., managers or blue-collar workers); have time available and, more important, their spouses are not available from 5 p.m. onward. In line with previous research, this study provides evidence that dismantles the “myth” that higher status employees, and/or those with college education, are more egalitarian in practice.

The findings demonstrated that both analytical and optimized inverse kinematic solutions correctly identified colored objects and positioned them in their appropriate goal points.</span>

Abstract:
Abstract OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to understand the experiences of intimate partner violence among women from Portuguese-speaking countries living in the Greater Toronto Area. METHOD A social phenomenological study was conducted with ten Portuguese-speaking women who had experienced intimate partner violence who were selected by community centre leaders. The interviews were transcribed, translated and analysed by categories. RESULTS The consequences of violence included health problems, effects on children, and negative feelings among the victims. Factors preventing the women from leaving abusive partners included religious beliefs, challenging daily jobs, and the need to take care of their husband. Factors that encouraged them to leave included getting support and calling the police. Some women expressed hope for the future either with their husband. Others, desired divorce or revenge. Their plans to rebuild their lives without their husband included being happy, learning English, and being financially stable. CONCLUSION Using these findings can implicate in the improvement of care for these women.

Abstract:
This article addresses recurrent trends in the forces shaping work and its meanings. Using evidence from large-scale surveys and qualitative case studies it maps the changing picture of work and employment, particularly in the UK and Australia. It does so by focusing on insecurity, demanding work, performance management, work–life boundaries and dis/engagement. Whilst identifying a number of negative impacts of change such as growing insecurity and excessive work pressures, the article emphasises that these are trends, not universals, and don’t affect all workers or affect them in the same way. We need to be more careful about how trends are translated into overarching theoretical constructs that give a misleading picture. In policy terms, attention should be given to the intersection of labour process and labour market factors, the changing boundaries between and shared aspirations of ‘standard’ and ‘nonstandard’ workers, and to a more nuanced understanding of the positive elements of ‘bad’ jobs and the more negative elements of ‘good’ ones.

Abstract:
Abstract Little is known about middle-aged Hispanic men’s perceptions of physical activity (PA). Purpose: To examine perceived barriers, facilitators, and benefits of PA and what types of PA are enjoyable. Methods: Seven focus groups (FGs) were conducted with middle-aged Hispanic men (mean age 51.6±6.1 years; n=32) who primarily self-identified as Mexican (78.1%). All FGs were audio-recorded, transcribed, and translated into English. A grounded theory approach was used to identify themes. Results: Competing responsibilities (N=7 FGs), laziness/apathy (N=6 FGs), and a lack of habit/routine (N=5 FGs) were identified as the primary barriers to PA. Jobs were perceived as a PA barrier because of physical labor involved, long hours, having multiple jobs, and/or an inconsistent schedule. Laziness/apathy involved the notion that people have time to exercise, but choose not to. Not having a routine resulted in procrastination and not achieving exercise goals. Social support was the primary facilitator to PA, which included having a friend (N=5 FGs), family member (N=5 FGs), or spouse/partner (N=6 FGs) with whom they could participate in PA. Sports were mentioned in all FGs as enjoyable, including soccer (N=5 FGs), basketball (N=5 FGs), tennis/racquetball/handball (N=3 FGs), and baseball (N=2 FGs). Walking/running (N=6 FGs) and hiking (N=5 FGs) were also considered enjoyable. The primary perceived benefits of PA included increased energy after exercising (N=6 FGs) and improved overall health (N=6 FGs). Conclusion: Hispanic men realize the importance of PA and what may be hindrances or facilitators to increasing PA. Funded by the National Institute on Aging (R21 AG050084-01A1).

When setting long-term goals, mathematics teachers face a constant dilemma. Most of us realize that our students will need to be mathematically literate in their future jobs, be able to see the real world through mathematical eyes, and be ready to handle the huge quantities of numbers that will be presented to them in their company's reports and in the news. During most of the school year, however, we give our students problems that are already written in mathematical language. Even the socalled real-life applications often consist of just an equation from physics, medicine, or economics that students are expected to analyze algebraically or graphically. They do not learn how the equation was originally derived, and they can often solve such problems without giving any thought to the application. To truly connect their mathematical skills with the outside world, we need to confront them with problems that have not yet been translated into the language of mathematics. We should just say “Now what?” and give them the necessary time to try out several mathematical models for the given situation.

Abstract:
Rich and powerful people have built a new system in which only risk is common, and profit is exclusively theirs. Neoliberalism is an ideology that is realized in the interest of the rich and powerful. They have enormous financial (and not only financial) power by which they shape the political, media and (quasi) scientific space in order to conduct economic policy and publicly promote the values that suit them. That is why in recent years we have mostly heard that the problem has arisen because people do not live in accordance with the real possibilities and that we must continue to tighten our belts and rationalize our jobs (translated from Orwell's new speech: further dismissals of employees). Much less is said about the problem of inequality, i.e. uneven and unjust distribution and concentration of wealth, and that a solution should be sought there. The latest economic crisis caused by COVID / 19 has shown that not everyone is equally affected by the crisis: the rich have become even richer and the poor have become even poorer. This paper will discuss the unequal consequences caused by the latest pandemic crisis.

Abstract:
Over the years, the educational level of Malaysian women has increased tremendously with more women than men in the tertiary institutions. Nevertheless, investment in female human capital has not been translated into more women in the workforce. Therefore this study aims to explore the work decision of Malaysian women. Results from the survey of 553 women reveal that nearly all women expressed that they are willing to work after completing their tertiary education but they feel that support and influence from families are the most important deciding factors in influencing women’s decision to work. Furthermore, economic and social differences also play vital roles in women’s work decision. Women from poorer families and with lower educational background tend to focus on their financial needs as priority in their work decision. On the other hand, women with higher educational background and who come from richer families tend to choose jobs that will allow them to achieve their goals and also bring great self satisfaction. Therefore, various strategies targeting different women need to be done to increase the labour force participation of Malaysian women. Abstract: In Algeria, agriculture continues to suffer from short-term strategies and is unsuitable for the needs of populations and rural areas. This study examines the evaluation of the Agricultural and Rural Program (ARRP) initiated in Algeria for the period (2009-2014). This work was carried in the Ouarsenis area located in the north-west of the country. It is based on regular monitoring on the ground of the rate of achievement of the targets foreseen. We concentrated our efforts on the projects financed by the main intervention funds of this program. The results achieved are far from the targets for the economic component, a situation mainly expressed by the low income of the rural population and the number of jobs created. However, an improvement in the living conditions of the population was recorded in the social component. Concerning the environmental aspect, the results are considered acceptable for the restoration of the forest patrimony and low for the protection of the soil. We believe that this policy rests on foundations that have not really been translated into the field in the continuity of previous approaches and lack of governance with poorly managed material, financial and human resources.

Like other countries, Malaysia is concern about the students’ engagement with science in upper secondary schools and the numbers pursuing the further study of science as their careers, thus this research was carried out to demonstrate relationships between the five constructs: pupils’ interest and attitude, inquiry learning, science activities outside school hours, aspirations to engage in science careers, and representation of science and scientists. Using a correlational research design, a set of Science Interest Instrument by Dillon et al., (2008) was adapted and translated to Malay Language and administered to a total of 938, 13-year-old and 14-year-old school students. The data collected were analyzed descriptively in terms of percentage, and inferentially using Pearson Correlation. The results indicated that there was a large positive correlation between interest and attitude towards science and inquiry learning. Also a strong relationship between high interest and attitude towards science, and aspiration of students to become scientists or taking up science jobs. The young students also had favourable representation of science and scientist. The result of this study was discussed in relations to students’ science identity, and the government and parents could nurture this aspect of identity in adolescents.

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a leading technology in the digital transformation. AI is expected to cause job losses in general, initially in professions associated with routine activities, and subsequently in the field of creative professions. The present article analysed the results of the authors’ own empirical sociological survey of the attitude of Bulgarian translators towards AI, and the ways in which it will change their profession. Most of them perceive artificial intelligence and automatization as threats to the profession. According to them, digital technologies and AI will modify the profession by relieving human translators of the routine, technical part of the job. Hence, translators will predominantly edit machine-translated texts, and teach artificial intelligence to perform machine translation. The conclusion of the analysis demonstrates that, in the case of Bulgarian translators, such pessimistic scenarios about mass jobs destruction are not justified. In addition, expectations of a deterioration in quality of work as a result of digitalization in the near future are not justified in the case of the translating profession. The present survey results serve as a basis for further research about the impact of artificial intelligence on other creative professions.

The paper introduces Markas Lavrinovičius’ most significant jobs in the Karaim cultural heritage preservation and revitalisation. Markas Lavrinovičius (1938–2011) was a Doctor of Science, Lithuanian Karaims’ Hachan, and the Chairman of the Lithuanian Karaims’ Religious Community. He was an active Karaim community member who made an important contribution to the language research and its revival. He described Karaim customs and traditions, compiled Karaim literary heritage, and prepared it for publication; he also described the Biblical stories in the Karaim language, translated relative Turkic-speaking nations’ folk fairy tales into Karaim, and compiled and computerised the Russian-Karaim dictionary. In addition, the article contains a review of the Karaim language coursebook titled 100 karaj tiliniń üriatiuviu. Troch karaj sioziu ([100 Karaim language lessons. Trakai dialect]) – one of his most significant works, containing a thorough research on the Karaim grammar, conducted by Markas Lavrinovičius and Diana Lavrinovič. Despite being surrounded by non-Turkic languages for 625 years, the Karaim language Trakai dialect has managed to preserve its purity and remain untouched throughout the centuries. Unfortunately, it currently faces the threat of extinction. Therefore, teaching the mother tongue was Markas Lavrinovičius’ ultimate goal.

Abstract:
The economic impact of freight transportation has been the focus of policy debate for many years. Attempts have been made to measure the benefits of freight policy. However, the overall economic impact, as reflected in increased output from efficiency improvements or generated employment, has not been evaluated effectively in long-range planning. This study attempts to quantify the economic benefits of freight policy relative to recommendations in the 2020 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for a six-county region of Chicago, Illinois. RTP projections for fuel consumption savings and shorter delays (and thus lower labor costs) were translated into output changes for the motor freight industry and, subsequently, demand changes. Using rather conservative assumptions, annual savings of $270 million were calculated as the total direct economic impact of RTP policy and project implementation on the regional motor freight and warehousing industry. Increases in output and demand for the motor freight industry were fed into an input–output model. The model found that direct, indirect, and induced impacts on the regional economy exceeded $675 million and generated nearly 7,000 jobs annually. In particular, both wholesale and retail markets were expected to increase output by almost $30 million because of freight movement efficiency improvements.

Abstract The study focused on the deregulation of the downstream of Nigeria’s petroleum sub-sector as an aspect of Rolling back the state in Nigeria. Deregulation of the downstream of the petroleum sector is occasioned by the removal of subsidies on petroleum products. This paper is adapted from my Ph.D research work at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka on rolling back the state. The objective was to examine the impact of deregulation of the downstream of the petroleum sector on the road transport sectors of the Nigerian economy within the period 2003-2007. Data for the study were generated through the observations of primary and secondary sources. The data were analysed using tables, percentage and correlation analysis. The findings of the study shows that deregulation of the downstream of the petroleum sector allowed the private sector owned road transportation system to increase the cost of transport fares anytime the government announced increase in the pump price of products. An increase in the cost of road fares translated into increase in prices of goods and services which ultimately resulted in inflation. Equally the huge amount derived from petroleum has not been judiciously expended for building and construction of roads. The research recommends that government should monitor the execution of road contracts to guard against none and poor delivery of jobs.

This article focusing Sikandar Lodhī’s (1458-1517) reign (1489-1517) presents a study of the tolerance and social development in the Muslim Subcontinent. Introducing Lodhī’s reign, it highlights Sikandar Lodhī’s steps for the development of none-Muslims specially Hindus. It maintains that despite of some of his radical dealings, Sikandar Lodhī was a man of good character; he was a poet having excellent poems with the pseudonym Gulrukhī. In his 28 years rule, Lodhī devoted most of his time to the welfare of the people and the state; he used to distribute money, clothes, shawls cooked grain and food among the poor. He gave stipends to the poor Muslims and non-Muslims. He established mosques, madrassas and bazaars. He ensured justice. Education was made compulsory for the soldiers. As a result, Persian education became common even among the Hindus. He gave government jobs to Hindus. During his time, Sanskrit books were translated into Persian. There was no restriction on the spread of Hindu religious views during his empire. Some prominent Muslims themselves tried to understand the depths of Hinduism. It turns out that the government of the day allowed propagating religious ideas. The lives and deeds of Kabīr, Gurū Nānak, Sundar Dās, etc. can be understood in the context of the religious tolerance of Muslim rulers.

Entrepreneurs in Indonesia believe that digital products and services may enable a more efficient and effective way of living. The key to achieving success in the era of digital transformation is to disrupt the market by providing consumers with exceptional value. In order to execute this correctly, businesses must be both effective and effective in achieving this expectation. Today Indonesian large businesses are digitalized and prepared to create disruptive, consumer-focused innovation as a result of this effort. In addition, as of 2022, Indonesia had the highest number of digital start-up enterprises among Southeast Asian nations, with 2,345 registered. Leadership is a factor in the success of digital firms, and digital businesses that must develop for the benefit of other companies are no exception. We believe that significant effort needs to be done in order to grasp the leadership behavior of the executives in payment aggregator firms. This research was conducted at Tangerang Indonesia-based software and consulting business. Since 2014, the company's main focus has been billing aggregation, and it currently has over 150 partners. Interviews were conducted in Indonesian, which would subsequently be translated into English for the purpose of this research. The outcomes showed that corporate leaders of a billing aggregator company have three types of behaviors that are considered desirable for their staff. Relationship-related, performance-related, and conflict-related behaviors are all interconnected. Ideal leaders establish clear boundaries not only between jobs but also between their relationships with employees.

Airports, linking air transport with other modes of transport, are indicated as one of the elements influencing regional and local development. Their presence strengthens the communication accessibility of a particular place in space attracting investors and dynamizing its development. Recently, the functioning of airports has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic drastically reducing passenger traffic at airports, which also translated into the situation of related companies and people who live near airports (commune). Assessing the impact of an airport on the socio-economic situation in a commune is difficult because, on the one hand, they create jobs and attract investors and, on the other hand, they generate noise and pollution. In this situation, a preliminary study was carried out in five communes throughout Poland. The aim of the research was to determine how residents and representatives of communes perceive airports located in their communes, in the context of the impact of these airports on the socio-economic situation in communes, also in the situation when the airports face problems resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim was achieved using analysis of strategic documents of communes, analysis of data on the functioning of communes and airports in the period 2016–2021, and a diagnostic survey using interview and survey techniques. The survey research involved 600 respondents from 5 communes located in different regions of Poland and 5 representatives of their authorities. Abstract:
The article presents the results of the research project funded by the Research Council of Lithuania, the aim of which was to find out the attitude of Lithuanian translation market participants – companies and freelance translators – towards machine translation and post-editing. Currently, there is no objective information on the application of machine translation in companies providing translation services in Lithuania or the attitude of translators to machine translated texts and the challenges posed by post-editing as a service. There is also no information on the competences that need to be developed by translators and translation students so that they can adapt to this new reality and work successfully on the market. To reach this aim, two questionnaires were prepared: one for translation companies providing translation services (n1=42) and the other for translators (n2=61), and two surveys were carried out. A qualitative analysis of survey data confirmed that among market participants there is a strong belief that as machine translation programs progress, the importance of competences ensuring quality post-editing will grow rapidly. Among the most important competences for post-editing, both groups of respondents singled out knowledge of text linguistics, native and foreign language proficiency, and knowledge of the field of translation. However, the surveys have also revealed that at least one third of market participants have a negative view toward machine translation and see it as a threat to the quality of translation (agencies) and/or their jobs (translators). It is expected that the conducted research will contribute to the promotion of a more favourable attitude of translators to machine translation technologies and will encourage further research in post-editing in Lithuania.

Abstract:
The University of Florida Miami-Dade County Extension, as a member of the USDA's County Emergency Board, is required to assess damage to commercial horticultural crops (tropical fruit, ornamentals, and vegetables) immediately following natural disasters. While trying to determine dollar values following a freeze in Jan. 1997, Extension and the Farm Service Agency (FSA) developed a spreadsheet that lists all the major crops by commodity along with average yield per acre and price based on how the crop is sold. Acreage is another component, as is the percentage of each crop that was “lost” during the disaster in question. These components are multiplied to give a dollar value of the loss for each individual crops and are totaled to give losses for the major commodities in Miami-Dade. While acreage is relatively stable for ornamental and tree fruit crops, it fluctuates considerably for vegetables, depending on the time of year. Within roughly 24 h of a disaster, the committee assesses actual damage to different crops by conducting a windshield survey of the local growing area. This allows staff to calculate the percentage of damage experienced by each sector and current acreage. Then, acreage and crop loss figures are plugged into the equation and dollar values are generated. Crop loss can also be translated into lost jobs, which can assist migrant service providers with funding requests. This presentation will review the different types of damage experienced during hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in 2005 and their effects on the local economy. Katrina caused extensive flooding, with some structural damage, while damage from Wilma was primarily due to high winds and micro-bursts.

Uwadiae Jacob Egharevba was born in 1893 to a descendant of Ohenmwen, the Iyase of Benin Kingdom during the reign of Osemwende, ca. 1816 to ca. 1848, and Okunzuwa, a granddaughter of an Ibadan chief. Jacob's parents were long-distance traders, and he claimed to have traveled with them in the Benin and Yoruba regions until his father's death in 1902. The brief sojourn in the Yoruba country afforded him the opportunity of attending school for a year in 1899, at a time when there was no such facility in Benin because of the reluctance of the traditional elite to send their children to school. Jacob was impressed by the written word and became interested in education, although it was not until 1911 that he returned to school at Akure. He demonstrated brilliance, although his education here was terminated by relocation. On his return to Benin in 1914, he became a domestic help to Black Shaw, a senior European staff of the Public Works Department, while at the same time enrolling at St. Matthews C.M.S. school. In 1915 he converted to Christianity and, with the encouragement of Shaw and others, he was able to complete his primary education in 1916.Between 1916 and 1921, he worked in lowly paid jobs in Warri, Port Harcourt, and Okigwe. His failure to secure any lucrative government position pushed him to trading. His writing career began in 1921 when he drafted his now famous classic, Ekhere Vb'Itan Edo. Ironically, it was this successful book that exposed his writing inadequacies. To improve his skills, he enrolled in 1926 in a five-year correspondence course with the Institute of Rationalistic Press in London. In 1933 the C.M.S. published the Ekhere Vb'Itan, which attained an instant success. It was reprinted the following year and translated as A Short History of Benin.

Abstract:
In Bangladesh, a notable number of people are engaged in food handling (preparing, serving and selling) jobs. Their dietary habits, lifestyle patterns and other behavioral factors are somewhat descending. The study aimed to identify the health status, nutrition status, lifestyle patterns, job satisfaction level and sanitation practices of food handlers working in student residential hall’s canteens and messes at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data was collected through direct physical measurement and a standard questionnaire, which was translated into Bengali for ease of data collection. It was structured by focusing on data related to socio-demographics, dietary habits, awareness level of food and nutrition, lifestyle patterns, current job satisfaction level, family history and sanitation practice. Among the study participants, 11.0%, 8.7% and 2.0% of them were overweight, underweight, and obese, respectively. The study found that the BMI status of the food handlers was significantly associated with their age (χ2 = 42.796, P < 0.001). 42.7% of participants had poor dietary habits (χ2 = 2.586, P = 0.460), and half of the participants (50.7%) lifestyles were poor (χ2 = 4.626, P = 0.201). Only 27.0% of participants were aware of the health risks associated with poor dietary habits and malnutrition. 83.0% of the participants were habituated to wearing shoes while doing their duty. 84.7% had access to hygienic bathroom and toilet facilities. 37.7% of study participants did not participate in regular outdoor physical activities. Only 46.3% of participants were satisfied with their job. A number of food handlers were found to be malnourished and experienced unfavorable health conditions. The associated authority should take it into consideration for the improvement of overall nutritional health status, lifestyle patterns, and overall, the job environment. Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. Abstract:
Gender disparity in employment remains a pervasive global issue, and the sport and physical activity (SPA) sector is no exception. Despite a notable increase in women’s sport participation in recent years, this growth has not yet fully translated into significant strides toward gender parity in employment, as men continue to hold most SPA-related occupations. This study investigated the persistent gender inequalities in the SPA industry, focusing on the Madrid region in Spain. A survey was conducted with 400 SPA professionals—102 women and 298 men—to examine occupational representation, employment pathways, employment determinants, contractual arrangements, salary differentials, and organisational affiliations. The findings confirm the underrepresentation of women across all domains of SPA employment, especially in sport coaching for competition. The results showed that recruitment and hiring of women rely primarily on curriculum vitae reviews or public examinations, unlike their male counterparts who lean on their social networks or personal referrals to secure employment in the SPA sector. Findings also revealed that men hold a substantial proportion of formal and informal contracts, including non-contracted jobs, affirming their dominance in both ends of the SPA contractual employment spectrum. Moreover, the study indicated that women often face unfavourable work conditions, including extended working hours and salary differentials. Informed by institutional theory and intersectionality, the discussion highlights the entrenched structures, norms, and practices that reinforce the marginalisation of women based on overlapping identities, sustaining employment practices and outcomes over time. Initiatives are proposed to strengthen equitability and transparency in hiring practices, increase job security, and improve work conditions, enabling organisations and institutions in Madrid to mobilise resources and programmes that foster gender parity in the SPA sector. By advocating gender-informed initiatives that challenge embedded norms and biases, recommendations may be adapted to diverse contexts and cultures where similar gender disparities exist in SPA industries worldwide.

Abstract:
One of the major challenges for urban planning in Latin America is to provide low-income families with housing in areas that have an infrastructure and a good supply of jobs and services, thereby promoting diversity and equity, translated by mixing classes, races and social cohesion. This mission becomes increasingly difficult in a neoliberal capitalist context which transfers the task of providing land and housing for low-income families to the market and where the logic of such actions is based on achieving more rent from land and consequently of the holding of real estate becoming more profitable. This paper sets out to discuss two proposals for urban instruments that dialog with the production of housing through the market and guarantee of the right to the city. The first centered on the reserve of land for the production of social interest housing (HIS, in Portuguese) in the zoning by creating Special Social Interest Housing Zones (ZEIS, in Portuguese), spread throughout Brazil, and described here based on the experience of São Paulo. Or else, comparatively, classifying land to be used as a priority for social housing (vivienda de interés prioritário) widespread in Colombia, and here presented by the Bogota experience. There is another, which already has international experience and has recently been debated in Brazil, which consists of conceiving of the promotion of social interest housing policies based on the regulation of urban restructuring but experiences of this are rare in Brazil. These may be termed as inclusive housing policies. As a result, this article points out that the creation of alternative regulations has set the tone for the market to exclude itself from producing housing of social interest, and guarantees greater profitability to commercial undertakings.
