Abstract:
Since the 1970s, the practice of deejaying has been integrated into music-making and musical performance in hip hop, dance music, and other cultures. Disc jockeys have also become recognized as producers and authors of sound recordings. I examine how changes in the technological, legal and commercial environment of disc jockeys in the 1990s are articulated in the styles and methods of deejaying. I argue that the conspicuous and covert styles of sampling articulate different forms of authorship, economic interests, and notions of originality. While the covert style has been crucial to the emergence of the DJ-as-author and deejaying as a legitimate art, the conspicuous style of copying on the edges of DJ culture troubles the tenuous links between the new DJ-stars and their works.

Abstract:
Little research has examined the effects of weight management on jockey’s wellbeing. However, there is a consensus that pervasive weight-loss practices (WLP) in the racing industry negatively impact on jockey’s physical, psychological and social wellbeing. The research reported herein examined the effects of the WLP used by flat-race jockeys on their physical, psychological and social wellbeing. In Study 1, 42 jockeys (10 women and 32 men) completed questionnaires examining eating behaviour, WLP and their physical, psychological and social effects of WLP. In Study 2, six male jockeys completed race day and non-race day assessments of WLP and mood and were interviewed about their experiences. In Study 3, eight jockeys (two women and six men); five family members (three wives and two fathers); and six industry professionals were interviewed about their perceptions and experiences of the lives of jockeys. Together the results of the studies showed that the WLP of jockeys have serious negative effects on their physiological, psychological and social wellbeing. Jockeys experience symptoms of life-threatening heat illness, negative mood, limited social interactions and strained relationships. Disordered eating behaviour was common and many jockeys reported symptoms consistent with DSM IV-TR disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Depression, General Anxiety Disorder and Social Phobia. Weight restriction symbolised a range of other restrictions that characterise jockeys’ lives. The term, Occupational Weight-Loss Disorder (OWLD) was coined to describe and explain the findings. Recommendations to reduce the harms documented included determining minimum weights, increasing time off, professional advice and profession suitability.

Abstract:
Situated within contemporary debates about language, ideology and the media, this thesis represents an attempt to try out and develop recent approaches to language within social psychology, and to argue that popular radio can be understood as ideological in several respects. Attempting to forge a position between marxism and post structuralism, the thesis argues that discourse analysis should eschew a total relativist position and/Should adopt a critical definition of ideology, which sees ideology as maintaining assymetrical power relations. The thesis consists of a detailed analysis of disc jockeys' on-air talk on BBC Radio One, looking at how particular views of the world are constructed and maintained by disc jockeys in their patter, and at how relations of inequality are brought off as natural and inevitable The research also analyses several interviews with broadcasters, examining the way they see their role and their audience, and looking in particular at the centrality of constructions of gender. Finally the research examines the accounts of disc jockeys and Programme Controllers for the lack of women in popular radio, highlighting the flexibility of sexism and drawing attention to features of the accounts offered which would have been ignored by more traditional approaches.

Disc Jockeys are music professionals exposed to high sound pressure levels during the working day. Several studies were carried out showing the impacts of such professional activity in hearing, however, none was directed to understand the meaning of music and hearing assigned by Disc Jockeys. Purpose: To study the meaning of music and hearing assigned by Disc Jockeys and the possible implications of these professional activity on the hearing health . Method: Descriptive, analytical, and qualitative research in which four Disc Jockeys were interviewed, all male, aged between 26 and 34 years, working with electronic music for at least a year in the region of greater São Paulo. It was direct interviews composed by four questions: (1) What music means or represents in your life? (2) What electronic music means or represents in your life? (3) How is your hearing in that context? (4) Do you notice any changes related to the hearing after having commenced this activity as a Disc Jockey? To reach the meaning the interviews were transcript and analyzed by the categorization method proposed by Bardin (2009). Results: The discourses showed tree categories: (1) Representation of music ; (2) Representation of hearing and (3) Changes in hearing after performing as Disc Jockey . The main meaning attributed to "music" was to move the emotions. The meaning attributed to "hearing" and to "changes in hearing after performing as Disc Jockey" was to evolve, because hearing is a tool for listening and imagination, which allows learning. Final considerations: As to categories (2) and (3) was only given the meaning of evolution and never of loss of hearing, we concluded that: 1 to perform as a Disc Jockey has only a positive implications to health, 2- the interviewed DJs don t know the risks of excessive exposure to intense sound levels; 3 - speech and hearing work is important for the group of the studied professionals; 4 - further research is needed to know whether these absence of knowledge is extensible to the group of Disc Jockeys. This research is important to develop adequated heath action in the speech and hearing field

Abstract:
Professional jockeys are unique amongst weight-making athletes in that they are required to make-weight daily, and compete at different weights. Additionally, jockeys are unique in that they are required to be weighed both pre- and post-competition. Amongst the most common methods to reduce body-weight are acute and chronic dehydration and food deprivation. Such practices are suggested to be detrimental to the general health of jockeys. In Chapter 4, an assessment of the physical and mental health of 37 GB professional jockeys (19 Flat jockeys and 18 Jump jockeys), was undertaken and comparisons with clinical norms and between groups were made. This was the first time that such a study had been undertaken. Impaired markers of bone health, inadequate dietary practices including low micronutrient status, and abnormal mood profiles were identified in both groups. Additionally, Flat jockeys displayed significantly poorer bone density (p<0.01) and mood-state (p<0.05) than Jump jockeys. Both jockey groups also displayed higher percentage body fat than in other athletic groups, which demonstrated that there was scope to reduce body-weight which could in-turn negate the need to starve and/or sweat. In Chapter 5, the energy expenditure (EE) of simulated race-riding was measured in 9 Jump jockeys, and the daily EE was assessed in 8 Jump jockeys, on a non-race-riding day. Additionally, the daily energy intake (El) of 8 Jump jockeys was also analysed. Previously, these data were unknown. Simulated race-riding EE was mean (± SO) 0.20 MJ ± 0.03. Daily EE was 11.26 MJ ± 1.49 and daily EI was 7.24 MJ ± 0.92 that largely consisted of two main meals. These data demonstrated that jockeys displayed sporadic eating patterns with large gaps observed between food consumption, and given the daily EE that such eating habits may not be necessary, in order to make minimum weight. In Chapter 6, the effects of a 2% reduction in body-weight through rapid weight-loss (RWL) was measured in 8 jockeys (6 Jump jockeys and 2 Flat jockeys) on physical and cognitive performance. This body-weight reduction was induced by exercising in a sweat-suit (a common weight-making method used by jockeys). To date, these data were previously unreported. Maximal riding performance and chest and leg strength were significantly reduced (p

Abstract: The aim of this study is to understand the techno-genetic process of the development of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) DJs in an effective performance in the dance floor. To be able to accomplish this task I analyse the process from three distinct approaches, namely technology, techniques, and skills that assume different relational dynamics depending on the goal and the combination stabilished among them, and from those different relational scenaries those combinations orient toward specific rhythms of interaction between mankind and machines. These combinations and rhythms were the most proficuous nucleous to the analysis, identified to explore the DJ as concept and practise in EDM. Those three approaches are to unfold the issues regarding each topic above mentioned and the integration of the approaches happens through a non-contemplative aesthetic experience. The first approach aims the different ways sound reproduction technology was relevant to EDM and intends to build a material base of technological change to the discussions subsequently dealt. The second approach derives from said technological base in order to present the possible ways of developing skills, techniques, and body by the synergic movement to common goals between DJs and sound reproduction technology. The third approach derives from the first two aiming to understand the relation stablished among the technological ways and the techniques to form the skills and perceptions that contribute the way of interaction between DJs and the dance floor. It focuses mainly in potencialities and specificity of the techno-aesthetic proposal that tries to scape from contemplative passivity in the relation between the audience and the performer of aesthetic acts. All this process was needed to understand the role the technologies play in the formation of senses and actions corresponding to them during the technique learning process of either DJing or dance moves. Consequently, I identified, as well as some autors who perpassed the text, the fact that the way of perception and the body that perceives and also all implications of this situation are not given a priori, and that way, are constituted during the different interactions with the environment and technology. Also an aesthetic approach that previleges the aesthetic experience mediated by objects not necessarily aesthetic, but objects with different reticulations of the space and the time through their form of manipulation and inserction in specific contexts was the most interesting way to describe the relation between DJs, technologies, and dance floor

Abstract:
Introduction: Young male jockeys compromise bone health by engaging in caloric restriction and high volumes of physical activity during periods of musculoskeletal growth and development. Failure to attain peak bone mass (PBM) during growth can have adverse short and long term musculoskeletal effects, with numerous studies demonstrating inferior bone health in jockey populations. However, no study to date has addressed counteracting the deleterious effects that participation in this sport has on bone health. The purpose of this six-month double-blind randomised placebo controlled trial was to examine the efficacy of 800mg calcium and 400 IU vitamin D daily supplementation on improving bone mineral properties at the tibia (weight-bearing) and radius (non-weight-bearing) using peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT) and blood-borne markers of bone turnover. Three inter-related studies were designed following the findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the effects of calcium and vitamin D supplementation on bone mineral density in healthy males. Study one examined the effect that the protocol had on markers of bone metabolism and bone properties of the radius. Study two was designed to investigate the impact of six months supplementation on weight-bearing bone while study three further explored alterations to radial and polar cortical bone properties at the tibial mid-shaft following the clinical trial. Methods: Twenty-nine male jockeys (age=20.18 ± 3.23yrs) were originally recruited to the study with 17 completing the intervention. Bone properties at the ultra-distal (4%) and proximal (66%) radius and tibia using pQCT and serum vitamin D, Procollagen type 1 N propeptide (P1NP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTx) were assessed at baseline and six months. Bone properties at the 66% tibial site were further analysed using BoneJ pQCT distribution plug-in. Polar and radial volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) was measured in 36, ten degree cortical sectors (polar) and three concentric cortical divisions (radial). Polar distribution was further consolidated into four, 90 degree quadrants aligned to anatomical planes. Cortical mineral mass, endocortical and pericortical radii were also analysed. Results: After co-varying for height, body mass and baseline bone measurements, the analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) results of these combined studies demonstrate that six months calcium and vitamin D supplementation stimulated a reduction in bone resorption together with significant improvements to bone material properties at the proximal tibia in the supplemented group. ANCOVA serum analysis indicated significantly higher vitamin D levels (18.1%, p=0.014) and lower CTx (ng/L) (-24.8%, p=0.011) in the supplemented group with P1NP unchanged. The supplemented group displayed greater post-intervention bone properties at the 66% proximal site with cortical content (mg·mm) 6.6% greater (p<0.001), cortical area (mm2) 5.9% larger (p<0.001), cortical density (mg·cm3) 1.3% greater (p=0.001), and total area (mm2) 4% larger (p=0.003). No alterations were observed to bone material properties at the radius, nor the ultra-distal tibia or bone strength indices. When cortical bone of the proximal tibia was examined in greater detail the supplemented group demonstrated greater endocortical vBMD in the posterior region of bone (1140.5 ± 6.3 vs 1116.2 ± 5.9; p=0.018) with a trend suggesting supplementation improved mineral mass and stimulated bone apposition in the posterior and lateral regions of the tibia. Conclusion: This is the first randomised controlled trial to examine the efficacy of calcium and vitamin D supplementation in improving bone properties in a highly vulnerable, young athletic, weight-restricted population. Results indicate beneficial effects of supplementation on bone properties in as little as six months. Although the study size is small, this intervention appears promising as a strategy for improving bone health in young athletes in weight-restricted sports.

Abstract:
The goal of this research was to provide how women in Indiana perceive their roles in the radio industry.Thirty-five female participants from across the state sorted Q statements that covered the following topic areas: relationships with men, relationships with co-workers, personal on-air work, career opportunities/education, and personal life.Through an analysis of the Q sorts collected for this particular study, three distinct factor types were found: Optimists, Pessimists, and Neutralists. The Optimists are enthusiastic about their work in radio and do not feel as if they have been slighted by male co-workers or managers. Pessimists, while they expressed a general enjoyment of their work, are overwhelmed with feelings of suppression by the men with whom they work with. Finally, the Neutralists seem uncertain of any professional limitations in the radio industry because of male dominance. There was little evidence that the three groups in relation to age, level of education or years in radio was related to the three factor types.

This study analyzes the culture, history, and technology of the hip hop DJ in order to tease out the relationships between industrial and cultural practices. The following research questions structured the investigation: 1) What historical developments in intellectual property rights and music playback and delivery formats contribute to a political economy of the hip hop DJ; 2) what has been the role of intellectual property exchange and standardization in the DJ product industry relevant to hip hop DJs; 3) how are the meanings involved in the consumption of and production with analog and digital technologies related; and 4) does hip hop DJ culture represent convergence and collective intelligence? Employing various qualitative methods, the research includes interviews with influential hip hop DJs, executives at record labels, distributors, retailers, and DJ technology manufacturers. The study also reviews the histories of music playback technologies and standardization in relation to intellectual property laws. With political economic, cultural Marxism and new media theories as its framework, this study analyzes hip hop DJs as the intersection of corporate culture and youth culture. The research broadly addresses the hip hop DJ's role in building the industries that cater to hip hop DJing. Specifically, the study analyzes the politics of how hip hop DJs' intellectual properties and subcultural capital have been harnessed by companies in various industries as a way to authenticate, improve, and sell product. The study also examines consumption as production, collective intelligence, and how digital technologies are negotiated within this culture. The research suggests that hip hop DJ culture and the DJ technology and recording industries are not necessarily discrete entities that exert force upon one another. Rather, they are involved in a cultural economy governed by technocultural synergism, which is a complex interplay between agency and determinism guided by both corporate and cultural priorities. The study also offers a networked theory of innovation and creation over the individual genius emphasized in U.S. intellectual property laws to suggest that hip hop DJ culture is an open source culture.

Abstract:
The horseracing industry currently lacks media attention. Studies have indicated the sport’s viewing and gambling declination over the decades. While popular televised sports such as football and baseball maintain a modernized entertainment culture through high-definition wireless streaming, horseracing remains in the 'binocular era'. An idea is introduced and a solution is analyzed to establish a foothold for horseracing in contemporary entertainment and inspire a developing fan base. EquiSight LLC desires wireless telemetry within the form factor of a jockey's helmet to meet these ends. The system devised must function while satisfying safety regulations. Individual component decisions are justified in addition to safety and quality tests. Current technology restricts bandwidth and data transfer rate. Standard-and high-definition possibilities and implications are discussed. Analog and digital transmission systems are evaluated and a preference justification is developed. A reliable power source and integration technique are chosen. Environmental, space, and range constraints are considered. Two-way audio communication between the jockey and trainer is described. In summary, a compact solution for EquiSight LLC is presented and its design choices are reviewed. The proposed system, implemented within a $3000 budget, will attract new fans, reignite interest, and provide a fairness and/or outcome judging tool.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Macquarie University, Division of Humanities, Department of Contemporary Music Studies, 2007.
Bibliography: p. 291-313.
Introduction -- "Back to this subculture thing": literature review and methodology -- "The crowd went berserk": dance music and club culture in Sydney and Australia -- "Once you find a groove you've got to keep it locked": the role and significance of the DJ -- "There's a great myth about that": DJ culture in Sydney -- "You're not a real DJ unless you play vinyl": technology and formats: the progression of dance music and DJ culture -- "What is underground really?": defining the structure, significance and meaning of dance culture -- "Where are they going to go next?": shifting the focus of dance music studies.
The development of contemporary, post-disco dance music and its associated culture, as representative of a (supposedly) underground, radical subculture, has been given extensive consideration within popular music studies. Significantly less attention has been given to the commercial, mainstream manifestations of this music. Furthermore, demonstrating the influence of subculture theory, existing studies of dance culture focus largely on youth-based audience participation, and as such, those who engage with dance music on a professional level have been somewhat overlooked. In an attempt to rectify these imbalances, this study examines the contemporary commercial dance music scene in Sydney, Australia, incorporating an analytical framework that revolves mainly around the work of DJs and the commercial scene they operate within.--An ethnographic methodological approach underpins the majority of this thesis, with interviews forming the main source of research material. Beginning with a discussion of the existing academic literature on dance culture and dance scenes, an historical context is subsequently established through a section that traces the development of dance culture from an underground phenomenon to a mainstream leisure activity, both within and outside Australia.--The ideas, opinions and interpretations of a selection of local DJs and other music industry practitioners who work in Sydney are central to the analysis of DJ culture herein. Issues discussed include the interaction and relationship between the DJ and their crowd, the technology and formats employed by DJs, and the DJ's multiple roles as entertainer, consumer and educator. The final part of the study gives consideration to the structure of the Sydney dance scene, in regard to the frequently used, but rarely critically analysed, terms 'underground' and 'mainstream'. The thesis concludes with a discussion that challenges the structural rigidity imposed by subcultural theory and scene-based analysis, arguing instead for a greater degree of fluidity in the theoretical approaches taken towards the study of contemporary dance music scenes.

Abstract:
In this study sociodemographic variables and gambling behavior of videopoker, bingo and horse-race gamblers were examined. One hundred seventy one subjects, 63 from the Jockey-Club of São Paulo, 65 from bingo clubs and 43 from videopoker clubs were administered a questionnaire adapted from the South Oacks Gambling Screen - SOGS, and 25 individuals of each group were classified as pathological gamblers. The majority of subjects were married catholic males, who had at least a high school degree and full-time jobs. Mean age was 40 years and median income was U$ 4000.00. In descending order, lottery, bingo, card games, and horse-race were the most frequent types of games played at least once by the subjects. Comparisons between pathological and non-pathological gamblers revealed no significant difference in any sociodemographic variables, but the two groups differed in their gambling activities. Pathological gamblers had played significantly more cards, bet on horses, played videopoker and dice games in their lives than the other group. Pathological gamblers also played significantly more videopoker in the previous month and previous year than non-pathological gamblers. They also bet more money in one day of gambling and also reported making more money from this activity than non-pathological gamblers. With respect to gambling-related emotions, pathological gamblers reported feeling tense before gambling and negative affects during and after gambling. The non-pathological group reported a sense of well being before gambling and neutral affects during and after it. Pathological-gamblers reported negative affects during periods when they stopped gambling, while neutral feelings were reported by the non-pathological group. The former also missed this activity more than the non-pathological group, but few sought help for problems associated with gambling. Gambling habits and alcohol use between parents of pathological and non-pathological gamblers were not significantly different. The two groups also did not differ in their use of alcohol and other drugs but tobacco, which was significantly more consumed in a lifetime by the pathological gambling subjects. Comparisons between bingo, videopoker and horse-race subgroups evidenced few significant differences. There were more married subjects in the bingo group and younger individuals in the videopoker group. The pathological gamblers interviewed at the Jockey Club reported higher frequency of bets in sports, of family arguments between family members because of the amount of money spent on gambling and more credit lines with bookies.

Abstract:
This thesis is formed from an interest in the field of art and technology. Art, regardless of its support is a form of self expression and experimentation of human creation, exploring the limits of meaning and reframing of life, of its production and constant way to invent attributes, contaminated intelligence. Inspired by the culture of VJ – Video Jockey –, live editing of images and music, VJEdu (Educational Video Jockey) is a research project on digital media that supports various languages and their use to expand the experience of the public who visit an art exhibition. Although its original design was more focused on formal education, there was an extension of this approach for possible use in cultural institutions, with varying types of audiences. The research was developed from the need to create a specific technology for art galleries and museums, including the adaptation of software. This technology was created especially for new features to interact with a database consisting not only of video and sound, but also of image media and text. The media must be produced from each art exhibition, developing a customized documentation on art works, artists and it’s contexts. The public interacts with digital platform devices for audio-visual presentation, exploring the database and building a route with contexts relating to the exhibition, enhancing the experience of their visitation. The VJEdu project has theoretical concepts derived the intermedia, especially the concepts of post-production of Nicolas Bourriaud, and post-history of Flusser. The project was tested in three galleries: the Fortress to Solitude in New York, Skol Centre in Montreal and La Photo in Porto Alegre. At each place a custom database was built and data was collected about the performances of the visitors. The results point to a promising of use of this software in art galeries, museums, in cultural and educational institutions, and in educational projects within shows as Art Biennales. The project was supported by funding agencies CAPES and CNPq in Brazil, and the University of Montreal in Canada.

Abstract:
The present work of professional sufficiency consists of the development and analysis of the situation of the department store PARIS, its external and internal environment and the opening in 2016 of its store in the Jockey Plaza. Being thus in showcase with the main department stores of Perú. For the development and analysis of this work has been used four management theories that evaluate and weigh the environment and variables in favor or against PARIS. Primary sources such as interviews and secondary sources as data available on the web were resorted. As well as bibliography of the management theories for the development. The main conclusions result in a correct strategy on the part of PARIS in the opening of the Jockey Plaza store. This because it has the internal capacities developed to support this new target audience, the socioeconomic “A” sector, to which they are directed in the Jockey Plaza. It is also considered that the work in question will be a contribution to the discipline of administration, since it could be used as a case of study and be taken by new companies that wish to have a model or guide of an evaluation and a strategic redirection.

Abstract:
Our Third Ear aims to create a multi-sensory experience by fusing sight, touch, and sound. By creating a means of physically feeling music, listeners can connect with songs, bands, and individual musicians on a profoundly personal level. The potential for unintended applications like learning to play an instrument, broadening the understanding of music for people with hearing impairments, or providing a means of therapy are also exciting prospects. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the process involved in creating a multi-sensory experience of music from concept to prototype. The culmination of interdisciplinary research and a broad range of creative technologies resulting in a working system. The multi-sensory experience consists of primarily tactile, but also visual responses triggered by music and executed in conjunction with aural music. Tactile investigation involved varied tactile sensations such as vibration, temperature, pressure, proprioception, and touch. Further research questioned the practicality, feasibility, and psychological impacts of using such sensations as well as where on the body such sensations would optimally be received. Visual research involved the visual representation of notes, chords, and sounds, as well as, how music could directly affect visuals in a real time environment. Additional research explored active interaction and passive interaction of visual cues using human computer interfaces.

The objective of this research project was to investigate the reasons associated with the premature retirement of Thoroughbred horses in training at the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) and to develop intervention strategies in an attempt to reduce training and racing ",. injuries. The impetus for this project was a survey aimed at identifying the reasons for a decline in the race attendance and betting revenue. This identified premature retirement and an increase in turnover of horses which reduced the opportunity to "get to know" individual horses as one of the reasons for the decline. Content analysis of reasons for retirement identified superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendon injury as the major reason for the premature retirement in this population accounting for a mean of 3.2% of the total. The mean annual cumulative incidence of retirements due to SDF tendon injury was 3.2% accounting for 14% of all retirements. A follow up descriptive analysis of retirement of Thoroughbred racehorses due to tendon injuries at the Hong Kong Jockey Club (1992-2004) provided population based data on the frequency, career and economic losses associated with tendon injury induced retirement. The risk of tendon injury increased over the 12 year period from 2.3-4.2%. The length of the racing career, number of starts and earnings of horses retired with tendon injuries were reduced by 25.6,41.2 and 53.3%, respectively. Further evaluation of detailed training data (1997-2004) to identify risk factors for retirement because of tendon injuries in Thoroughbred racehorses was undertaken. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for retirement from racing attributable to tendon injury.

Abstract:
Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) are public shell entities uniquely constructed to acquire one or more privately held businesses. The transaction's structural characteristics put significant pressure on the management team's capabilities to find a suitable company to acquire within the predetermined time frame. This thesis investigates whether management team characteristics, such as operating experience and gender diversity, increases the likelihood of success in identifying the target company and conducting the merger. Although not statistically significant, the results indicate that SPACs led by “C-suite” operators do not have a higher likelihood of successfully consummating a business combination. Furthermore, our data indicates gender diversity to have a positive impact on acquisition likelihood.

Hear Color and See Sound - What happens when I combine flamenco guitar and film in a live performance? This master thesis explores the combination of two art forms. The purpose is to use live projections to enhance my guitar composition with movie. My research question is: what happens when I combine flamenco guitar and film in a live performance? I explore if visual qualities add a deeper meaning to my instrumental music by experimenting with color science and video telling/editing techniques. I’ve tested through surveys and live performances if the audience perceive my music differently, by showing contrasting footage or footage that synchronize with my musical compositions. Resulting in an exam concert where I control the prerecorded video compositions with a touch screen interface through the video-jockey software Resolume, while also performing the music (which have been timed for the videos) live together with a flamenco singer and dancer.

Abstract:
Sports presents one of the most popular forms of entertainment in society, and sports media continues to expand its billion-dollar influence through new television deal and broadcasting rights. But with a population of journalists who are overwhelmingly white, straight, and male, sports media is promoting the hegemony of said image by reproducing stereotypes in its broadcasts to audiences around the country. Mainstream media regurgitates these stereotypes in their coverage of minority athlete by portraying black players as unintelligent or “thug”-ish, women as “butch”, and gay athletes as effeminate. These representations allow for the perpetuation of the white, heterosexual male narrative throughout society while sidelining those who do not fit the description. But just as sports media is growing in popularity, so too is the athlete activist. Starting in 2013, today’s athletic superstars are now using their exalted platforms to address societal issues and speak on behalf of marginalized groups that are often ignored or misrepresented by traditional media narratives. The efforts of Colin Kaepernick, Billie Jean King, and Jason Collins in fighting against the system and these stereotypes will reveal how certain athletes are represented in the media and their unique position of changing the discussion and inspiring others to challenge societal norms. The growing popularity of social media and its use as a tool for social activism will also be examined, particularly as it has revolutionized the culture of athlete activism.

Abstract:
Adaptive reuse of industrial buildings into creative spaces has recently sparked global (Mommaas, 2000, 2004; Daniels, Ho, and Hutton, 2012)and local interests (Leung, 2010; Kong, 2012). The clustering effects of creative spaces have also inspired extensive research on how creative spaces could contribute to urban development and in particular economic growth (Pratt, Andy C., 2004; Evans, 2009; Mommaas, 2009). This dissertation critically reviews existing literature and examines the hypothesis with a comparative study of the Fotanian Artist Village (Fotanian) and Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC), which represent two distinctive development trajectories namely organic and planned creative spaces in Hong Kong. It is argued that the development of creative spaces in industrial buildings is strongly correlated to the intention of the public sector to promote creative economies, as well as market assumptions in dealing with obsolescence in urban environment. Both are governed by the concept of neoliberalism, which advocates utilization of land resources based on exchange value rather than use value, and the use of creative spaces as urban development tools. Thus, developing creative spaces in obsolete places through adaptive reuse would restrain the organic growth of creative spaces, or result in its commodification and institutionalization. The hidden neoliberal agenda has also led to the misconception that creative spaces should be assessed for its efficiency and effectiveness as a cluster based on the agglomeration effect of industrial cluster in traditional sense. Fotanian and JCCAC are selected to test against their success performances based on the cluster theory. The two cases are compared to examine whether the planned is less successful than the organic as suggested by the literature. Findings suggest that neither one of them entirely fulfills all the conditions of creative cluster identified in the literature for a successful creative space. Indeed the clustering effect is an inconclusive, if not misleading, criterion of successful creative spaces, given that the development of creative spaces in cities might bring a variety of benefits. Studies have shown that the adaptive reuse of obsolete places might pose potential threats to creative spaces. It is argued that the success of organic and planned creative spaces can only be possible in the long term when breeding and sustaining factors are introduced.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This Master s Degree dissertation addresses the development in adjustment and validation and the metrological reliability of laboratory services covering horseracing activities. The work includes (i) the specification of the performance of an antidoping laboratory capable of identifying the presence of forbidden substances, as defined by the horse-racing industry; (ii) the validation of analytical methods applicable in doping tests of biological matrices of competing animals to Brazilian laboratories conditions, and (iii) the definition of a standard of excellence in harmony with the criteria of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities as the tools utilized for the accreditation of the antidoping laboratory and the subsequent participation in international agreements of mutual recognition. In order to validate the methodology, the Brazilian Jockey Club Antidoping Laboratory (LAD/JCB) was used as a studycase. Original in its scope, this work contributes towards the widening of the accreditation of laboratories in Brazil, considering the fact this new category of testing laboratories is still nonexistent within the Brazilian network of accredited testing laboratories which considers the international standard ISO/IEC 17025 as the basic criteria. With regard to development, some relevant aspects are still being discussed in relation to the laboratory management system: the unreliability of the measurements for the determination of doping, in view of internationally accepted practices and procedures; qualification of specialized technical personnel; traceability of SI (the International Unit System) and the validation and adjustment of analytical methodologies utilized in antidoping laboratories. Special attention is dedicated to Methode Alcalins Sur C- 18, developed by Laboratoire LAB-Contrôle Antidopage in France, applicable to the determination of the presence of doping substances in the biological matrix (urine) of racehorses, used as method source for the development of an alternative method adjusted to the Antidoping Laboratory of the Brazilian Jockey Club conditions and molded to detection of the more frequents doping substances in the brazilian horserancing activities. Having the caffeine been the doping substance statistically identified as the most frequent in the tests carried out by the Brazilian Jockey Club Antidoping Laboratory, along its seven years of services, the Methode Alcalins Sur C-18 was adapted and validated for its analytical determinations. The applied research carried out was also credited with the introduction of a new attribute to the methodology qualitative validation, designated as limit- value for determination, which provides key-information for the determination of a concentration band, in order that incorrect results (false-positive and false- negative) do not appear in the laboratory reports usually issued. Besides the adaptation and validation of the analytical method thus developed, this Master s Degree dissertation contributes not only towards greater visibility of a new category of laboratories, but mainly to the preparation of the Brazilian Jockey Club Antidoping Laboratory to demonstrate its technical capacity as a policy and strategy for becoming in the near future an internationally recognized accredited laboratory. The present M.Sc. Dissertation addresses the metrological reliability of antidoping laboratories, a pioneering issue in Brazil, aiming at the solution of a problem related to the horse-racing industry. It was developed under the financial support of the FINEP/MCT Agreement no. 22.01.0692.00, Reference 1974/01 (Green-Yellow governmental Sectoral Fund) which droved research cooperative efforts in metrology to the solution of ten pilot-projects. In this case specifically, cooperated to the development of the M.Sc. research entitled Metrological reliability of the Antidoping Laboratory of the Brazilian Jockey Club
