Abstract:
The correct administration of insulin is a constant challenge for type 1 diabetics. The correct insulin regime leads to fewer complications and an easier way of life. The amount of insulin administered must take into account the meals eaten, previous administered insulin, exercise etc. A rapid process for determining insulin regimes that is accessible to type 1 diabetics will greatly reduce diabetic complications later in life. This study researches such a process. Software is developed to use the ets-concept to simulate blood glucose levels. From these simulations blood glucose characterisation can be done to propose insulin regimes. Data gathered in previous studies is used to verify the results of this process. These results are compared to factors that describe the accuracy of a person's blood glucose control. The effects the new regimes will have are used to make recommendations to the end-user. Accurate characterisation leads to insulin regImes that will Improve the control performance of type 1 diabetes.<br>Thesis (M.Ing. Bevin, Darren James. "The struggle for ascendancy : John Ruskin, Albert Smith and the Alpine aesthetic." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/65533.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores the work of two disparate figures, John Ruskin (1819-1900) and Albert Smith (1816-1860) who, together, helped transform the way the Alps were perceived in the mid nineteenth century. Both esteemed the Alps in their own way, although Ruskin’s cultural aestheticism contrasting markedly to the popular showmanship of Smith. Nevertheless, both Ruskin’s five-volumed Modern Painters (1843-1860), and Smith’s theatrical shows describing his ascent of Mont Blanc (1852-1858), contributed significantly to the growing popularity of the landscape resulting in the Alpine Club (1857) and the birth of modern tourism in the region. This work examines in detail the work and interests of both characters. This includes Ruskin’s drawings, art theory (especially in relation to his admiration of Turner), geological interests, religious convictions, and poetry. These reveal his desire to centre ideas of the sublime around his scientific interest in the area and the legacy of his Evangelical upbringing. The thesis investigates the tension between these elements. Smith’s climb of Mont Blanc (1851) and his subsequent shows highlighted his desire to thrill and entertain. For him, presentation of the Alps was a matter of showmanship and the thesis investigates his success, tracing its roots in elements of Victorian popular entertainment. Both Smith’s shows, and works like Of Mountain Beauty (Volume IV of Modern Painters (1856)), inspired many to explore the landscape for themselves. For Ruskin, this led to a decline in his interest in the Alps following the development of the rail network and the expansion of popular tourist sites, including his beloved Chamonix. For Smith, the public’s increasing familiarity with the region, and the popularity of other stories of Alpine ascents by members of the Alpine Club, led to a decline in interest in his shows by the end of the 1850s. Due to their interest in the region, the Romantic appreciation of the Alps in the early nineteenth century associated with theories of the sublime became a much more diverse phenomenon illustrating a number of key features of Victorian culture, including: the relationship of ‘high’ and ‘popular’ culture; the increasing influence of mass tourism; and the ways in which major figures in Victorian Britain explored and utilised foreign destinations. The thesis will also, from time to time, examine the relationship between cultural and visual forms and key elements in Victorian intellectual controversy, including the relationship of religion and science.

Fărcaş, Daniel-Sorin. "Le transcendantal et le discours théologique : métaphysique et analogie chez Albert le Grand et Maître Eckhart." Paris 4, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA040026.

Full text
Abstract:
This distinction between man's knowledge and God's knowledge concentrates the whole metaphysics of Albert the Great. The first operates especially according to the resolutive method ("modus resolutorius"), which follows an upward way (from effect to cause) in a cognitive return approach of the creature to the Creator (the specific terms of Albert's the Great vocabulary are here "reductio", "resolutio", "reditio", "remotio"), God's knowledge is a creative one (what He knows, He creates) and operates according to the composition method ("modus compositivus"). To Meister Eckhart, the concept of noble man ("homo nobilis") or detached man determines partial deletion of the opposition between "scientia hominis" and "scientia dei". The deified man (he takes part to Deity), who becomes "the unique son" of God his intellect adoption, experiences - even from his temporal and earthy life - not only the eternel bliss, but also the absolute (perfect) and everlasting knowledge which belongs only to God

Full text
Abstract:
In his Treatise On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons, the Southern Baptist preacher and educator of the latter nineteenth century, John A. Broadus, acknowledged the influence of classical and contemporary theorists upon his work. Among those named, particularly with regard to notions of argument, was Richard Whately, the Anglican Archbishop and rhetorical theorist of the early nineteenth century. The research task involved in this thesis was to determine whether and to what extent Whately's theory of argument was employed in Broadus's homiletic theory and practice. The writer gathered his data using methods of documentary research. Most of the sources were available at local libraries. Others, however, were obtained from the Universities of Kansas, Iowa, and Michigan. Materials by and concerning Broadus were obtained from various Baptist historical agencies.

Kriel, Albertus Johannes. "Pressure formulation and adaptive control of numerical algorithms for transient flow in pipe networks / Albertus Johannes Kriel." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8756.

Full text
Abstract:
Fluid flow network simulation codes are commonly used as a design and analysis tool for many engineering problems such as gas distribution networks, power plants and heat pumps. Two formulations of conservation of momentum have been widely applied in fluid flow network simulation models namely those based on static pressure and those based on total pressure. The total pressure formulations are convenient in that they eliminate the difficulties associated with the calculation of the convective terms and components such as pipe junctions are treated in a straightforward manner based on total pressure losses. However, the different formulations of total pressure for compressible and incompressible flow require different formulations of the momentum conservation equation, which is inconvenient for implementation in a generic network simulation code. In this thesis a united total pressure formulation is first derived which is valid for all fluids and therefore eliminates the inconvenience of switching between the compressible and incompressible formulations. A non-iterative method for the solution of the non-isothermal discretised equations based on the total pressure formulation is then introduced and consistency is illustrated. The method appears to be very stable for subsonic flows, while rapid steady state convergence is observed. A systematic comparison is also done with traditional static pressure based methods and the similarities and differences between the two formulations are illuminated. The different time scales involved in the simulation of transient flow in fluid networks are problematic when conventional fixed time step methods are used for time-wise integration. The time scales associated with acoustic and kinematic wave phenomena as well as storage effects can differ by orders in magnitude. This thesis also presents a simple adaptive time step algorithm which can be readily used in conjunction with all the commonly used first order methods for fluid flow networks. Two test problems are selected to demonstrate the efficiency and savings obtained with this procedure. The adaptive time step algorithm correctly selects appropriate time steps for all phenomena and significant computational savings are observed for accurate integration. In addition, a procedure is implemented which automatically selects the appropriate integration method. The resulting algorithm is a fully adaptive algorithm which switches between a fully implicit method and a semi-implicit method. Two test problems are once again used to demonstrate the efficiency and savings. The fully adaptive algorithm correctly selects appropriate methods for all phenomena and significant additional computational savings are observed.<br>Thesis (PhD (Mechanical Engineering))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013

Fels, Laurent. "Poésie et science(s) chez Saint-John Perse." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014LORR0221.

Full text
Abstract:
In his “Nobel Speech”, Saint-John Perse specifies that, for the scientist as well as the poet, “the questioning is the same on the same abyss, with only their investigative modes differing”. This statement prompted a more thorough analysis of the influence on Saint-John Perse’s poetry of both scientific knowledge and Henri Bergson’s philosophy, especially as the writer, further in his text, explicitly refers to Einstein and quantum physics. In his La structure poétique du monde : Copernic, Kepler, Fernand Hallyn emphasizes that ”poetics attend to the genesis of a hypothesis as a global phenomenon, which goes far beyond any established framework and develops along its own scheme - the result, undoubtedly, of logical and other determination and conditioning, but also a unique configuration, an original synthesis which, as a whole, requires a sui generis study of its structuring and the interaction of the elements framing and informing it”. In Les structures rhétoriques de la science de Kepler à Maxwell, he adds that “poetics must not totally be excluded from science: rather, the latter is endowed with its own poetics following specific rules and values.” In other words, there is interaction between poetic truth and scientific truth, with the “investigative modes” (Saint-John Perse) of the two differing, yet the object of the quest remaining the same. Hence arose the analysis of how the influences of Bergsonism, along with scientific knowledge, nourish the works of Saint-John Perse, which claim a cosmic perspective

Williams, Murray Noel. "Building Yesterday's Schools: An Analysis of Educational Architectural Design as Practised by the Building Department of the Canterbury Education Board from 1916-1989." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Humanities, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9591.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the nature of primary, intermediate and district high school buildings designed by the Building Department of the Canterbury Education Board from its consolidation in 1916 until its termination in 1989. Before 1916, the influence of British models on the CEB’s predecessors had been dominant, while after that date, Board architects were more likely to attempt vernacular solutions that were relevant to the geographic situation of the Canterbury district, the secular nature of New Zealand education and changing ideas of the relative importance of the key architectural drivers of design i.e. function and form. One development, unique to Canterbury, was that for a short period, from 1924-29, a local pressure group, the Open Air Schools’ League became so powerful that it virtually dictated the CEB’s design policy until the Board architects George Penlington and John Alexander Bigg reassumed control by inflecting the open-air model into the much acclaimed veranda block. The extent to which Board architects had the freedom to express themselves within a framework of funding control exercised by the Department of Education was further circumscribed by successive building codes that, at their most directive, required national standardisation under the 1951 Dominion Basic Plan and to a slightly lesser extent under the1956 code and associated White Lines regime. Following World War 2, the use of prefabricated structures had prompted the recognition that better designed relocatable rooms could hold the key to a more flexible and effective allocation of resources in an environment increasingly subject to rapid demographic change. By the end of the period, the exploitation of new construction technologies and modern materials led to the dominance of the relocatable CEBUS buildings in Canterbury schoolyards. A concurrent development was the response of architects A. Frederick (Fred) McCook and John Sinclair Arthur to the Department’s call to design more flexible spaces, i.e. open planning, to facilitate a change in pedagogical method. Other issues raised in this study are the CEB’s solutions to the challenges of building on the West Coast, and the recurring need to ensure structural integrity in a region where there was a continuous risk of seismic activity.

Alcorn-Oppedahl, Allison A. (Allison Ann). "Mail Order Music: the Hinners Organ Company in the Dakotas, 1879-1936." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1997. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc278307/.

Full text
Abstract:
Founded in 1879 by John L. Hinners, the Hinners Organ Company developed a number of stock models of small mechanical-action instruments that were advertised throughout the Midwest. Operating without outside salesmen, the company was one of the first to conduct all of its affairs by mail, including the financial arrangements, selection of the basic design, and custom alterations where required. Buyers first met a company representative when he arrived by train to set up the crated instrument that had been shipped ahead of him. Tracker organs with hand-operated bellows were easily repaired by local craftsmen, and were suited to an area that, for the most part, lacked electricity. In all, the company constructed nearly three thousand pipe organs during its sixty years of operation. Rapid decline of the firm began in the decade prior to 1936 during which the company sold fewer than one hundred instruments, and closed in that year when John's son Arthur found himself without sufficient financial resources to weather the lengthy depression. The studies of the original-condition Hinners organs in the Dakotas include extensive photographs and measurements, and provide an excellent cross section of the smaller instruments produced by the company. They are loud, excellently crafted, functionally attractive, tonally typical of the early twentieth-century American Romantic organ, and utilize designs and materials typical of this era. Only recently has it been acknowledged that these Hinners organs represent a "meat and potatoes" class of instrument, as it were, an honest meal without the pretense of delicate appetizers, vintage wine, and gourmet dessert. In this way the company offered churches a serviceable and respectable musical alternative to grandeur, and was able to fulfill the needs and meet the budget of a small congregation without the expense of a custom instrument.

Abstract:
Especially, confronting the figure of the wanderer with the paradoxes of alterity and guilt is what we offer to highlight. Before them, Fyodor Dostoevsky establishes with the figure of Raskolnikov the powerful tormented conscience’s schism about to wander. Taking as a starting point Crime and punishment, it is about calling out, questioning and bringing the texts face to face where the wandering figures undertake the paradoxical and laborious identity quest. Lord Jim, The Fall and The Master of Petersburg allow to identify the nature of interactions that bond guilt and suffering, autarky and social role through the raskolnikovian prism. Beyond that, it is about bringing back the identitary questioning to the common base of the wandering way in the 20th century novels. Through the analysis of these novels, this PhD offers to show how the evolution of the wanderer’s figure inverts the traditional paradigms linked to the salvation-suffering mechanism, and how it allows a new nihilism to see the light of the day

Kemp, Christian R. "The Hapsburg and the Heretics: An Examination of Charles V's Failure to Act Militarily Against the Protestant Threat (1519-1556)." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2496.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Charles V's inability to take decisive military action against the Protestant threat in Germany before 1546. It treats modern historiography on Charles V in Germany. The thesis offers a new theory concerning religious motivation for the delay. Charles was a man of deep and devoted faith in the Catholic Church and consequently, was unable to accept the possibility that any individual would doubt or abandon that persuasion without calculated intention or gross error. Charles was influenced by the Humanistic cries for reform in his age. As a result, Charles, a strong advocate for reform, declined military action before a meaningful outlet to address reforms and air grievances could be convened. But Charles was influenced by tradition, particularly the universality of faith and political unity of Christendom that could save the Church from the heretic and the Turk. Charles also felt himself personally responsible to avoid all conflicts that might endanger unity by creating a schism within Christendom. The evidence will be drawn both from the emperor's own words and deeds derived from primary source material and personal correspondence of Charles V between himself and those persons most likely have intimate knowledge of Charles's own thoughts. These include his personal advisors, Gattinara and Granvelle, and family members: Philip, his son, Mary, his sister, and Ferdinand, his brother. The unpublicized and private correspondence is less likely to be tainted by rhetoric and propaganda than are public declarations and correspondence. Instances not covered by these will be based on an interpretation of Charles's deeds. This thesis will therefore establish Charles's decisions regarding the Protestants in the context of his own convictions.

Lee, Brian. "A Matter of National Concern: The Kennedy Administration and Prince Edward County, Virginia." VCU Scholars Compass, 2009. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1877.

Full text
Abstract:
A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN examines the Kennedy Administration’s contribution to the restoration of public education in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and determines if those actions support the dominant narrative of Kennedy’s overall civil rights record – a historical assessment generally generated from a few acute crises. For five consecutive years (1959-1964), in defiance of federal court orders, the county board of supervisors refused to levy taxes to operate public schools, marking Prince Edward County as the only locale in the nation without free public education. The county leadership organized a segregated private school system for the 1,400 white children, but afforded no formal education for the 1,700 African American students. The Kennedy Administration inherited the Prince Edward County school situation – a crisis that threatened to cripple a generation, and, if replicated, destroy public education. In the Prince Edward County school dilemma, the Kennedy Administration took proactive measures, proved sympathetic to the plight of African Americans, challenged Virginia’s congressional delegation, and appointed federal judges that supported President Kennedy’s civil rights agenda. The Prince Edward County story generally, and the federal government’s actions specifically, have been virtually overlooked by historians. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN challenges scholars to re-evaluate the Kennedy Administration’s civil rights record by including all of the civil rights events of the Kennedy years, thus developing a thorough, comprehensive assessment. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN is the product of the study of unpublished archival documents, oral histories, interviews, newspaper reports, and secondary sources.
