Abstract:

Die vorliegende Publikationspromotion setzt sich mit dem forensisch-psychiatrischen Werk und Schaffen des ersten abendländischen Lehrstuhlinhabers für Psychiatrie und Begründers der Leipziger Universitätspsychiatrie Johann Christian August Heinroth (1773-1843) zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts auseinander. Die Schwerpunkte dabei sind dessen eigene Gutachtertätigkeit und sein Konzept der Zurechnungsfähigkeit. Anhand ausgewählter Schriften wurde eine textnahe Lektüre durchgeführt, um Heinroth losgelöst von Kontexten und Kategorien direkt verstehen zu können. Es ließ sich rekonstruieren, dass Heinroth durch philosophisches Denken und ganzheitliche Problemlösungsstrategien nicht nur der in seiner Zeit verbreiteten Exkulpationsneigung und der Instrumentalisierung psychischer Erkrankungen entschieden entgegen tritt, sondern auch, wenngleich er dieselben nicht überwindet, dennoch konstruktive Lösungsansätze für forensisch-psychiatrische Debatten findet und damit eine Bereicherung auch für aktuelle neurowissenschaftliche Diskussionen darstellt. Durch die Tiefendarstellung eines Zeitgenossen wird so ein Beitrag zur Vervollständigung der Geschichte der Forensischen Psychiatrie geleistet.

En 1814, paraissait en Allemagne du Nord la Theoretisch-praktische Deutsche grammatik de Johann Christian Heyse. Elle inaugurait une série de trois grammaires variant selon leur public et leur usage : la TPDG, la Schulgrammatik et le Kleiner Leitfaden. Fait exceptionnel, ce travail fut poursuivi par ses trois fils, et surtout le philosophe et grammairien Karl Wilhelm Heyse. A la fin du siècle, le grammairien et administrateur Otto Lyon en assura la dernière grande remise à jour et de nombreuses rééditions. Dans le cadre de l'intérêt nouveau pour la langue allemande du 19e siècle, nous montrons sur ce corpus peu étudié et méconnu les forces familiales, culturelles et historiques qui surent catalyser l'écriture de ces grammaires et en assurer la continuité. A cette étude interne de l'œuvre, suit celle, externe, selon deux axes; l'un, théorique, met en évidence la tension déjà sensible en 1814 entre le poids de la grammaire générale et les influences nouvelles dues à l'école historique allemande et la pensée de Guillaume de Humboldt. Le renouveau conceptuel de K. W. Heyse le porte vers "une grammaire philosophique" qui l'éloigne de contemporains tels que Becker ou Humboldt. Lyon garde les structures de base mais allège le fondement théorique. Abstract:

La publication du divan par goethe en 1819 avait ouvert la voie a la poesie allemande d'inspiration et de forme orientales. On retrouve dans ce lyrisme, cultive par les poetes les plus divers, les themes et les motifs des ecrivains de l'orient, leur langage allegorique, leurs metaphores et aussi leur technique de versification, notamment la forme du ghazel. Goethe, qui reproduit dans son divan la teneur et la symbolique de la poesie de hafiz, ne se soumet cependant pas aux regles du ghazel. Ses successeurs ruckert et platen, s'inspirant l'un de roumi et l'autre de hafiz, se conforment eux strictement aux lois du genre. Ils ambitionnent dans leurs recueils de ghazels d'enrichir la poesie allemande des ressources expressives des ecrivains orientaux et de la faire parvenir a la perfection formelle par l'emploi du ghazel et de contrebalancer ainsi la domination exclusive du metre antique. En restituant la technique poetique de leur modele et la structure tres condensee de leur pensee, ils se heurtent a l'hostilite de la critique qui ne voit dans leurs creations orientales qu'un travail de forme de qualite inegale. De la les assertions mal fondees sur leurs ghazels et la malveillance a l'egard de toute leur oeuvre. Les analogies forcees etablies entre eux et leurs emules munichois en feront en outre les precurseurs d'un esthetisme formaliste qu'ils n'ont pas preconise Goethe's publication of the divan in 1819 marked the beginning of german poetry of oriental form and inspiration. This poetry, practiced by many poets, is characterized by themes and motives of oriental writers, of their allegorical language, their metaphors, as well as their technique of versification, especially in the ghazel form. Although goethe uses the content and the symbolism of hafiz es poetry for his divan, he does not stick to the formal laws of the ghazel. His successors ruckert, inspired by rumi, and platen, inspired by hafiz, strictly obey the laws of the genre. Their ambition is to enrich the german poetry by recurring to the abundant expressivity of the oriental writers as well as to achieve a perfect form of the poem by using the ghazel. In this way they oppose the exclusive dominance of the antique metre. By imitating the versification and the highly condensed structure of thought of their models, they face fierce criticism. Their oriental poetry is considered as formal work of inconsistant quality. This explains why their ghazels are not correctly assessed. Consequently this prejudice is extended to their entire literary production. The supposed analogies with their disciples wrongly made them the precursors of formal art

Abstract:

Dans cette thèse d’histoire de l’art, nous posons un lien inédit entre la philosophie de Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762–1814) et quelques pratiques artistiques et/ou littéraires issues du premier romantisme allemand. Bien que ce lien ait été posé dans l’historiographie traditionnelle, il l’a été en tenant compte soit des contenus particuliers enseignés dans la Wissenschaftslehre de Fichte (théorie du sujet, théorie de la liberté), soit des opinions politiques de cet auteur (républicanisme, égalitarisme, universalisme du droit). Or, le projet romantique tel qu’envisagé par ces praticiens a pour matrice la dynamique pragmatique du message fichtéen, c’est-à-dire la structure aussi bien communicationnelle que pédagogique de ce dernier. Dans cette optique, en prenant pour cadre de référence la recherche actuelle en études fichtéennes, nous démontrons que Fichte est l’auteur d’un dispositif réflexif original dans lequel l’usager d’un système représentationnel donné se trouve indexé par le dispositif qu’il anime. Si bien que les fonctions de réception et de production du système—qui sont du ressort de sa performativité—s’avèrent parfaitement identiques. Par la suite, nous démontrons que le propre du projet est d’avoir déployé le dispositif pragmatique fichtéen dans des pratiques littéraires et plastiques, en vue d’engendrer un nouveau rapport entre l’image et la Bildung (esthétique, politique) du spectateur. Dès lors, la finalité de ce travail est de contribuer aux savoirs sur l’efficacité de l’art dans l’économie spectatorielle de la modernité et d’analyser l’apport de Fichte et des romantiques à la problématique actuelle de l’« agentivité » (agency) des images The purpose of this art history dissertation is to shed new light on the relation between the philosophy of Johann Gottlieb Fichte and the artistic practice of some of early German romanticism’s leading figures, namely, Friedrich Schlegel, August Wilhelm Schlegel, Novalis, and Caspar David Friedrich. Although this link has previously been established in the historiography on German romanticism, I contend that Fichte’s importance to the romantic movement does not hinge on the content of his philosophical writings (i. E. , the Wissenschaftslehre as a theory of subjectivity or as a theory of freedom), nor on Fichte’s political beliefs (republicanism, egalitarianism, the universality of Right). Rather, the driving force behind the romantic project resides in the pragmatic dynamics of the Wissenschaftslehre itself, that is, on its communicational and pedagogical framework. In reference to the work of leading Fichte scholars, I argue that Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre consists in an original, self-referential representational system whose putative user is indexed within the very system he or she drives. In the final analysis, the reception of such a system coincides with its production, and both are a function of its performative character. Based on this approach, I contend that romantic artistic practices makes use of the Wissenschaftslehre’s pragmatic dynamics in order to rethink the way in which pictorial or textual representations shape their beholders (both aesthetically and politically). Ultimately, this dissertation aims to contribute to current debates on the power of images and to understand Fichte’s and the romantics’ heretofore unacknowledged contribution to the theory of the agency of images

Utifrån särlingen, bonden, uppfinnaren, mytens och havets man Johan August Gustafsson (1852-1932) undersöks hans konstnärskap med begreppen original, modernitet och primitivism samt djuppsykologins och modernitetens framväxt.I uppsatsen analyseras ett urval av åtta artefakter med en hjälp av en semiotisk bildanalys och en stilanalys med syfte att försöka finna en eventuell förändring i hans konstnärskap och om detta var något som förväntades av särlingars konst eller om den förväntades vara genuin.Författaren framhåller problematiken mellan skillnaden att vara erkänd konstnär och att få stämpel som original, mot att vara original med strävan att bli erkänd som konstnär. J.A.G. tillhörde den senare kategorin och nådde inte sitt mål under sin livstid, men som särlingars konst har de en tendens att bli erkända först efter sin död.

Abstract:

Johann Sebastian Bach is credited with writing over 300 cantatas. Sacred cantatas comprise most of that repertory, but there are just under forty known secular cantatas composed by Bach. About half of these secular cantatas were written to celebrate a person’s birthday. This thesis will attempt to provide a view of the life of the historical figures for which the birthday cantatas were written, reflections of the personality of the individual in the cantata, Bach’s relationship to the recipient, and political or social connotations associated with the work. From a study of the individuals connected with the musical work, a more thorough understanding of the time period in which Bach lived and worked may be gained. This in turn will provide a more complete understanding of Bach’s birthday cantatas. This thesis will not address recipients of name day cantatas nor will it address recipients of birthday cantatas that were not fully preserved. Abstract:

In addition to his renowned musical output, Richard Wagner produced a logorrhoeic prose oeuvre, including a dramatic sketch of the last weeks of the life of Jesus Christ entitled Jesus von Nazareth. Though drafted in 1848-1849, it was published only posthumously, and has therefore been somewhat neglected in the otherwise voluminous Wagnerian literature. This thesis first examines the origins of Jesus von Nazareth amidst the climate of revolution wherein it was conceived, ascertaining its place within Wagner’s own internal development and amongst the radical thinkers who influenced it. While Ludwig Feuerbach has traditionally been seen as the most prominent of these, this thesis examines Wagner’s sources more broadly. The thesis then summarizes and analyzes Jesus von Nazareth itself, particularly in terms of Wagner’s use of biblical scripture. The thesis demonstrates how his not infrequent misuse thereof constitutes one way in which Wagner transmogrifies Jesus as mutable lens through which his own ideology of social revolution is reflected. It also attempts to provide a critical assessment of the relative dramatic merits of Jesus von Nazareth and looks into Wagner’s ultimate decision not to complete the work. The thesis then briefly summarizes the changes that occurred in Wagner’s mature Christological outlook subsequent to his drafting of Jesus von Nazareth, attempting to concisely demonstrate some developments beyond Wagner’s well-known encounter with the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of how Jesus von Nazareth informed Wagner’s general religious outlook and the extent to which this worldview is a productive one.

Hayek attribue à Mill la confusion relative au sens du terme "libéral". C'est en réalisant un certain nombre d'erreurs intellectuelles que Mill aurait perverti le libéralisme originel. En termes hayékiens, c'est en introduisant des idées "rationalistes" au sein du "vrai libéralisme" que Mill a contribué au déclin de ce dernier. Hayek présente son projet comme la restauration de la pureté du libéralisme originel de Hume et de Smith. Ce projet, qui est présenté dans la première partie de ce travail, est ensuite analysé à l'aide de l'étude de la lecture hayékienne de Mill. Au fil du temps, Hayek est de plus en plus critique à l'égard de Mill. L'étude de cette évolution permet d'identifier les éléments théoriques correspondant à la radicalisation de la pensée de Hayek, c'est à dire à une conception de plus ne plus étroite du "vrai libéralisme". Nous distinguons deux grands axes au sein de la critique hayékienne. Le premier axe porte sur la notion de justice sociale ; il est étudié dans la troisième partie. L'objectif est d'étudier les idées "rationalistes constructivistes" identifiées dans la première partie afin de comprendre en quoi ces idées représentent, selon Hayek, un danger pour la liberté.

Abstract:

Irish-born Sir John Winthrop Hackett (1848-1916) achieved substantial political and social standing in Western Australia through his editorship and part-ownership of the West Australian newspaper, his position as a Legislative Council member and as a layman in the Anglican Church. The thesis illustrates his strong commitment to numerous undertakings, including his major role in the establishment of Western Australia's first University. This thesis will argue that whatever Hackett attempted to achieve in Western Australia, his philosophy can be attributed to his Irish Protestant background including his student days at Trinity College Dublin. After arriving in Australia in 1875 and teaching at Trinity College Melbourne until 1882, his ambitions took him to Western Australia where he aspired to be accepted and recognised by the local establishment. He was determined that his achievements would not only be acknowledged by his contemporaries, but also just as importantly be remembered in posterity. After a failed attempt to run a sheep station, he found success as part-owner and editor of the West Australian newspaper. Outside of his business interests, Hackett’s commitment to the Anglican Church was unflagging. At the same time, he was instrumental in bringing about the abolition of state aid to church schools in Western Australia, which he saw as advantaging the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Legislative Council member for 25 years during which time he used his editorship of the West Australian, to campaign successfully on a number of social, industrial and economic issues ranging from divorce reform to the provision of economic infrastructure. As a delegate to the National Australasian Conventions he continually strove to improve the conditions under which Western Australia would join Federation. His crowning achievement was to establish the state’s first university, which he also generously provided for in his will. One of the most influential men in Western Australian history, his career epitomised the energy and ambition of the well-educated immigrant.

Si Maître Eckhart n'est pas un lecteur de la totalité des oeuvres d'Origène disponibles en son temps, un lecteur attentif de son oeuvre latine et allemande ne peut être que frappé par l'affinité philosophique de ces deux auteurs qui se relève dans trois domaines : l'exégèse, l'anthropologie et la divinisation. C'est en prenant appui sur le contenu de l'Écriture qu'Eckhart développe, à la suite d'Origène, une interprétation spirituellede la Bible, et cette conviction philosophique que la sacra pagina est à elle-même une philosophie - la vraie philosophie. C'est encore à Origène qu'il doit sa réflexion sur la permanence et l'inamissibilité de l'image de Dieu en l'homme, qui le constitue, dès sa formation idéelle dans l'intellect paternel, comme Fils de dieu. C'est pourquoi le Verbe peut prendre naissance en l'âme : il y a en l'âme un lieu qui, constitutif de l'humanité véritable, est pensé dans son aptitudeà nous rendre actuellement et dès maintenant fils de Dieu. Chez Origène comme chez Eckhart, il y une même idée centrale : l'Incarnation du Verbe n'est qu'une vue que de notre reconduction à notre véritable essence, celle d'être fils de Dieu Even though Meister Eckhart may not have read the entire writings of Origen available in his lifetime, an alert reader of his work in latin and German cannot fail to be struck by the philosophical affinity of these two writers an aspect that can be demonstrated in three areas : exegesis, anthropology and deification. It is by relying on what Scripture says that Eckhart, following in Origen's footsteps, develops a spititual interpretation of the Bible, as well as the philosophical certainty that the sacra pagina is a philosophy in itself - the true philosophy. It is to Origen, furthemore, that he owes his comments on permanence and the impossibility of mankind disposing of the image of God, which establishes him, from the moment of his idealised formation in the paternal intellect, as the Son of God. This is why the Word can take root in the soul : there is a place in the soul which, comprised of true humanity, has the capacity to make us now and henceforth, sons of God. Whith Origen as with Eckhart, there is the same central notion : in the World Flesh depends purely on the renewal of our own true essence, that of being sons of God

Le phénomène de l’élite politique est une réalité et, dans le même temps, il ne cesse de susciter des jugements de valeurs. Comme s’il constituait une sorte de pierre d’achoppement de la modernité. Analyser la place de l’autorité et des hiérarchies permet d’interroger les limites du libéralisme et du système représentatif. De fait, les libéraux ne manifestent pas tous le même attachement à la démocratie, ni aux principes du libéralisme. Il y a visiblement une difficulté à penser l’élite, ou la dimension élitiste du pouvoir. Est-ce une difficulté propre à la pensée libérale ? Nous étudions la conception de l’élite de trois libéraux, représentant chacun un certain type de libéralisme : Guizot un libéralisme fermement antidémocratique ; Hayek un libéralisme qui opère une distinction soigneuse entre libéralisme et démocratie, pour poser la primauté des principes libéraux ; Rawls un libéralisme qui considère que libéralisme et démocratie se conditionnent mutuellement, leurs principes se fondant harmonieusement dans la démocratie libérale. Il s’agit de mettre en lumière trois conceptions singulières des principes de liberté et d’égalité, trois modes de compréhension de la démocratie. Si le libéralisme, dans tous ses courants, témoigne d’un souci de l’élite, peut-on parler d’un élitisme libéral ? Quels principes cette appellation recouvrirait-elle ? Ces questions doivent nous aider à éclairer l’énigme de la démocratie libérale The political elite is a real phenomenon which, at the same time, provokes controversial statments. It appears as a stumbling-block in modern times. By analysing the place of autority and hierarchies let us wonder where do the limits of liberalism and representative democracy lay. Indeed, liberal thinkers have complex relations towards democracy. They don’t praise equally all liberal principles. The difficulty to build a conception of the political elite is striking. Is the difficulty amplified in the liberal thought ? I am to examine here three liberal thoughts : François Guizot, who steadily opposed democracy; Friedrich A. Hayek, a liberal who placed liberal values before democratic ones; and finally John Rawls, who considered that democracy and liberalism were the condition of each other, their principles being harmoniously bound in the liberal democracy. By such a comparison, I intend to shed light on three polarities of liberalism, on three way to understand democracy. Liberalism, in its diversity, is concerned about the elite which would be the most desirable one. Does it make sense to speak of liberal elitism? Which values should convey such a formulation ? These questions should help us to shed light on the liberal democracy’s mystery

Il s'agit de l'étude de la philosophie positive et du positivisme tels qu'Auguste Comte les a construits et tels que ses premiers disciples les ont compris et diffusés. Dans la première partie de ce travail (tome I), pour bien ressaisir les visées et les enjeux de cette philosophie, on s'est attaché à resituer l'œuvre d'Auguste Comte par rapport aux nombreux projets encyclopédiques qui depuis l'encyclopédie de Diderot et d'Alembert est pour de nombreux penseurs une sorte de modèle, en même temps qu'un travail à refaire. La deuxième partie de ce travail (tome II) est plus précisément consacrée au positivisme en tant qu'aspiration à une politique scientifique et en tant que programme d'une politique de la science : - organisation du corps scientifique ; - politique de diffusion des savoirs et d'éducation ; - théories et pratiques de la distribution des pouvoirs, de leurs attributions, de leur exercie ; - et visées de réorganisation européenne, puis occidentale et même mondiale de la société. A ces analyses, sont jointes de nombreuses annexes (tome III) comportant des bibliographies ordonnées des principaux auteurs ici analysés, une bibliographie générale des ouvrages sur la philosophie positive et le positivisme. I),in a effort to identify the aims and concerns of the philosophy, i have replaced Comte's work in its historical context, and underlined the historical dimension inherent in the production of his system,often obscured by dogmatic attitudes. I have thus tried to relocate the origins of the new philosophy, within the framework of a continually readjusted, corrected, and enlarged thougth. I have aslo analysed the first readings of Comte's work by J. S. Mill, E. Littré and Pierre Laffitte- and his first misunderstandings. I have attempted to chart the processes of displacement,amendement and correction - even emendation - which its various readers went through. I have underlined some paradoxical aspects of this early diffusion of Comte's thought. Upon being announced as one of the winners of the 1973 National Book Award, John Williams’ novel Augustus (1972) was classified as a book of a supposedly more traditional form compared to John Barth’s experimental work Chimera (1972) that Augustus shared the prize with that year. This essay will examine John Williams’ novel Augustus, with the purpose of analysing two of the novel’s main characters, Augustus and his daughter Julia. To define both of the characters, this essay will be looking in-depth into how Williams showcases the various ways both characters go about using the power that is bestowed upon them. This essay will be employing Fredric Jameson’s Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism (1991) to establish the environment of nihilism present in the Roman Empire that nears the “waning of affect” and exhaustion Jameson states occurs with the coming of postmodernism. Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics (1916) will be placed in dialogue with Luce Irigaray’s Speculum of the Other Woman (1974) to showcase the varying masculine and feminine practices of language both characters employ and the consequences these forms of expression bring with the duplicitous ways of the Roman Empire looming in the background behind both Augustus and Julia.
