Abstract:

Abstract:
This work is an attempt to reassess the significance of early German Enlightenment aesthetics in the history of modern aesthetics. Against the common reading that assigns early German Enlightenment aesthetics the status of an imperfect prefiguration of Kantian and post-Kantian aesthetics, I argue that the "Frühaufklärer" not only found a genuinely modern aesthetic tradition, but that they defend a consistent and original project : their aesthetics must be viewed in the context of the modern debate on the "ars inveniendi" initiated by Francis Bacon and developed by his early modern followers, including Christian Wolff. After examining the modern epistemological premises of the debate on invention. I investigate the contributions of Wolff and his pupils, namely Johann Jacob Bodmer and Johann Jacob Breitnger, as well as Johann Christoph Gottsched and Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten. Wolff himself introduces a turn within the earlier debate on invention in that he includes a philosophy of the arts within his general art of invention. His pupils transpose the modern heuristic paradigm from science and philosophy to poetry and the representative arts : the poet imitates nature insofar as he unveils hidden aspects of nature. From the modern view of inventio, they furthermore draw conclusions on the nature of art criticism as both a method of judgment and of invention. Baumgarten introduces a rhetorical shift within the former debate; he reintroduces a Ciceronian idea of invention concerning both logic and rhetoric within the modern logical context : the true philosopher must find arguments that are both consistent and convincing. But while Baumgarten's addition of aesthetics to logic as a second method of invention conforms to the modern paradigm of invention, it deeply changes the nature o f the "organon". These changes in turn affect the system itself, psychology and practical philosophy in particular. Baugmarten proposes a new division of the higher and lower faculties of the soul, and he carves out a space for art and aesthetics in practical philosophy

Abstract: This dissertation focuses the problem of the begining of Science, considered from a hegelianpoint of view, that means, from a logic-speculative point of view. The intention is to show that this question is a long-term preocupation in Reger' s work. From his Iena-period until the last formulationsof his sistem, the question of how to make the begining of the philosophie appear. The critics and disciples contemporary to him and his modern commentators debate this theme of Regel' s work, as well. The problem has two main sides, one is to know how one counscience an approach that speeulative (philosophieal) point of view, and the other to know how do the speculative Science must beginn. To present this aspects of the so called Iena-period of Regel, is our intention to analyse the Differenz des Fichteschen und Schellingschen Systems der Philosophie (The diference between the systems of philosophy of Fichte and of Schelling) and to conect it with the pos-kantian discussion of the begining of the XIXth century, as with the rest of Regel' s philosophical Sistem
Mestrado
Mestre em Filosofia

Abstract:
This chapter offers a reading of Wordsworth’s “She dwelt among th’untrodden ways” through the prism of ordinary language theory and of number theory. Key resources include John Stuart Mill’s System of Logic, Gottlob Frege’s essays, and Gertrude Stein’s writings. Thematic attention is accorded to epitaphs and the theory of naming (from ordinary language philosophy), and to the special cases of zero and one (from number theory). The latter is brought to bear on the none/few logical contradiction that many have noted in the poem. The deployment of these materials makes possible an exploration of what Virginia Jackson calls “inhuman lyricism” in the work of Emily Dickinson—here investigated, however, in an earlier incarnation, in Wordsworth’s Lucy poems.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the Descriptio, the Typus, and the Logicae universae typus (plates 1 and 2 and Fig. 12). These engravings depict entire systems of philosophical knowledge in a comprehensive manner and a hierarchical format, by showing, on a single page, how individual elements of the system relate to the whole. The analysis shows how these plural images are organized by conceptual relationships; their unity is primarily theoretical. The chapter also mentions philosophical plural images in the logic textbook of Johann Justus Winkelmann (1620–1699), which was first published in 1659 and appeared again in 1725. Winkelmann's visual representations combine details of the earlier plural images and show how this genre continued to be employed in the teaching of philosophy well into the eighteenth century. The ideas of Aristotle's logic held sway for over two thousand years, until the work of Gottlob Frege (1848–1925). Whereas much scholarship on the ‘scientific revolution’ focuses on discontinuities and ruptures. The chapter examines the prolonged and relatively stable dominance of Aristotle in the field of logic in the context of universities.
