Abstract:
"Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ Lay in the Bonds of Death). A Chorale’s Journey from the Middle Ages through Martin Luther to Johann Sebastian Bach. One of the focal points of Martin Luther’s work as a reformer can still be discovered in his compositions. He wrote several lyrics in which he formulated essential dogmatic insights. These include the Easter song Christ lag in Todesbanden [Christ Lay in the Bonds of Death] based on the mediaeval Gregorian chant Victimae paschali laudes and its later version Christ ist erstanden, in which not only the joy over Easter and the resurrection of Christ can be found, but it also gives a picture of the reformer’s theological insights into the death of death and sin. After nearly two hundred years, Johann Sebastian Bach processes all seven verses of Luther’s song in his cantata of the same title (BWV 4), shortly after the death of his first wife. The Lutheran hymn of the resurrection will thus become a personal creed, an ars poetica, but at the same time we can find an exciting musical representation of Luther’s theological view of death in Bach’s composition. Abstract:
The Ruland family was perhaps the most famous clan involved in alchemy and medicine in early modern Central and Eastern Europe. Yet while more prominent members of the family, such as Martin Ruland Junior (1569–1611), participated in the alchemical milieu at the court of Rudolf II in Prague, other members, farther from the centre of Empire, are also significant to the study of interconnections between early modern alchemy, science, and medicine. A case in point is the misunderstood figure of Johann David Ruland (1605–1648?), who plied his trade in the territories of Royal Hungary. His major publication, the Pharmacopoea nova (1644), introduced the rudiments of his “filth-pharmacy” (Dreckapotheke): the use of bodily waste to cure and heal certain afflictions. Yet in the secondary literature, Johann David’s life and work have often been confused with the activities of his uncle, Johann Ruland (1585–1638). The present biographical study of both Johann and Johann David seeks to disentangle their respective intellectual legacies, allowing us the opportunity to resituate both men within their respective medical and alchemical contexts.

Abstract:
A conceptual evolution is traceable from early modern classifications of libido nefanda (execrable lust) to early nineteenth-century allusions to ‘perversion of the sexual instinct’, via pluralizing notions of coitus nefandus/sodomiticus in Martin Schurig’s work, and of sodomia impropria in seventeenth- through late eighteenth-century legal medicine. Johann Valentin Müller’s early breakdown of various unnatural penchants seemingly inspired similar lists in works by Johann Christoph Fahner and Johann Josef Bernt, and ultimately Heinrich Kaan. This allows an ante-dating of the ‘specification of the perverted’ (Foucault) often located in the late nineteenth century, and appreciation of pygmalionism and necrophilia as instances of ‘perverted sexual instinct’. In this light, Kaan’s early psychopathia sexualis was less innovative and more ambivalent than previously thought.

Abstract:
Abstract With this article, Paige Patterson identifies six events in the life of Martin Luther that shaped the Reformer and ultimately affected the entire Reformation. By surveying Luther’s journey to Rome, his friendship with Johann von Staupitz, the Leipzig Disputation, the Diet of Worms, his year in Wartburg Castle, and his marriage to Katharina von Bora, Patterson’s goal is for his readers to gain a greater understanding of Martin Luther. In so doing, Patterson encourages his readers to consider the contribution of these events and the people involved to their own lives still today.

Abstract:
The paper gives a basic description of the stratified charge combustion process in the Stratified Charge Omnivorous Rotary Engine - SCORE. The inherent advantages of the Wankel geometry combined with spark ignition of a stratified mixture for a unique combustion cycle are explained with diagrams. The discussion points out why the engine is neither octane or cetane sensitive, making it a truly multifuel (omnivorous) intermittent combustion engine. A brief description of the parts and their function help to explain the inherent compactness of the engine and confirm its simplicity and efficiency. The engine specific size, weight, air flow and fuel flow are compared to an equivalent output turbine engine to place the performance in a familiar context. A most impressive feature of the engine, attractive cost of production, is demonstrated by the modular nature of its design. This feature is amplified by an in-depth description of the “Family of Engines” concept, highlighting the large number of common parts in a family of one to six rotor models. The ability to cover a complete market segment with one geometry is attractive for production costs, service, training and logistics. Modular design also enhances application flexibility. Development programs are underway for a diversity of applications for families of SCORE engines. Each application utilizes the unique characteristics available with this engine and is further justified by the economies realized in volume production. Thus low volume, high power applications (1000kW and up) can realize savings by utilizing the same major parts tooled for higher volume use in smaller engines. Some potential applications are discussed with particular emphasis on marine installations. Specific comparisons with other powerplants for shipboard electrical generation are presented.

Abstract:
The Ivar Aasen (IA) oilfield is located on the Gudrun Terrace on the eastern flank of the Viking Graben in the Norwegian North Sea. The field was discovered in 2008. The reservoir is located within a sedimentary sequence of Mid-Jurassic to Late-Triassic age, which consists of shallow marine to fluvial, alluvial, floodplain and lacustrine deposits overlying a regionally extensive, fractured calcrete interval. The sequence exhibits a complex mineral composition and is heterogeneous at a scale below that of a logging sensor. Shale layers, re-deposited shale and what was first believed to be redeposited calcrete fragments present in various forms throughout the sequence. Looking more in depth to XRD and XRF data and contrasting Fe concentration in the dolomite, it is also possible to explain some of the carbonate deposits through other processes. Extensive data acquisition in the form of advanced wireline logs and coring with analysis performed in “geopilot” wells before production start, enabled a novel thin bed formation evaluation technique based on the modified Thomas-Stieber method (Johansen et al. 2018). The method increased the in-place oil volumes within the Triassic reservoir zone internally named Skagerrak 2. This led to several improvements and a modified drainage strategy of Ivar Aasen. Several good producers were placed in the complex net of the Skagerrak 2 Formation. Results from these producers have encouraged development of an even more marginal and complex net, deeper into the Triassic sedimentary sequence. Therefore, another “geopilot” was drilled into the deeper Triassic sediments, internally named as the Alluvial Fan. This zone exhibits conglomerate clasts in a matrix varying between clay, silt, feldspars, and very fine to very coarse sand fractions, grading towards gravel. Previously, this zone was considered to be mostly non-net. Applying the same interpretation method as for Skagerrak 2, the Alluvial Fan promised economic hydrocarbon volumes. The latest geopilot proved producible hydrocarbons, and subsequently a producer was also successfully placed in this part of the reservoir. Production data and history matching from the beginning of production have for a long while established the previous increase of IA Triassic oil volumes published in 2018. Advanced studies of mineralogy and spectroscopy (Johansen et al. 2019) have indicated that a significant amount of the previously interpreted dolomite, could be reinterpreted as ferroan dolomite. The latter is a heavier mineral that increases the matrix density, hence also the total porosity. The additional findings described provided another necessary first-order correction to further enhance the evergreen geomodel. This paper describes this methodology which resulted in improved petrophysics and reservoir properties of the Alluvial Fan, yet again demonstrating the value of advanced wireline logs and detailed analysis that in total impacts the IA reserve volumes in a significant manner. Repeated success with the applied spectroscopy data and the thin bed methodology used today (Johansen et al. 2018), has resulted in even the deeper Braid Plain Formation becoming of economic interest. It is expected to lie within the oil zone in an upthrow block in the northern part of the IA field and could be developed into the next target.

Abstract:
Hydrodynamic experiments on 1:15 scale model arrays of circular fish cages, typically used in eastern Canada, have been completed in the recirculating flume tank located at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Scale model cages were designed with a high amount of detail from 100 m circumference cages used in industry. Two different cage spacings were tested, representing spacing of cages typically found at cage sites. A global force ratio scaling technique was developed and applied to the experiment to ensure geometric similarity between cages of model scale and full scale. Planes of 64 (8×8) wake velocity measurements at both cage spacings were taken behind individual cages within the array and at distances in the wake of the entire array, to observe velocity deficits, wake topology, wake recovery and unsteadiness in the flow field. Results show high velocity deficits behind the cages, causing accelerations in the flow underneath and around the sides of the cages. High amounts of unsteadiness is found to be generated at the bottom of the cages due to the presence of a shear layer in the wake of the cages. Dye release was also used to observe many features of the flow field at one time, and to verify results obtained from wake velocity measurements.
