Abstract:
Abstract Social mobility in nineteenth-century Paramaribo: the extraordinary library of Johanna Christina Jonas (1799-1849)The free black teacher, librarian, and shopkeeper Johanna Christina Jonas lived in the slave society of Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname, in the nineteenth century. Born into slavery, she was granted her freedom by her master. After her death an estate inventory was made which included a record of the library collection and the administration of debtors of the school, library, and bookstore. This article explores Johanna’s position and the role she and her school, library, and bookstore played in encouraging the social mobility of free people of colour in Paramaribo. The inventory gives us a nice glimpse of the reading behaviour of the citizens of Paramaribo in the nineteenth century. It turns out that Johanna was able to create more favourable conditions for free people of colour to improve their social position. With her school and library she allowed them to access a range of educational opportunities and a supply of books.

Poitiers, 2010. http://theses.edel.univ-poitiers.fr/theses/2010/Bertrand-Johanna/2010-Bertrand-Johanna-These.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder characterized by mutations on the CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Tran membrane conductance Regulator) protein resulting in a failure of CFTR dependent chloride conductance in epithelial cells. The aim of this work was focused on identifying compounds able to restore chloride secretion in Cystic Fibrosis model using in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo techniques. Firstly, we identified two methylglyoxal-alpha-aminoazaheterocycle adducts (GPact-11a and GPact-26a) as new water-soluble and non-toxic wt- and F508del-CFTR activators. In a second part of this study, we identified guanabenz as a new TRPC6 channel activator. We demonstrated that guanabenz activates CaCC by an entry of extracellular calcium through TRPC6 channel. Restoration of chloride secretion by the activation of F508del-CFTR or CaCC represents an effective and measurable pharmacological approach for Cystic Fibrosis treatments. Furthermore, identification of TRPC6 as a new target to activate CACC represents a scientific breakthrough with several therapeutic applications

Larsson, Hanna, and Frida Willander. ""Gåtan Johanna Möller" : En diskursanalys om den svenska kvällspressens gestaltning av Johanna Möller." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för medier och journalistik (MJ), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-91152.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the lifetime sentenced Johanna Möller, who in 2016 persuaded her boyfriend to kill her parents, is portrayed in Swedish news journalism. We analyzed 46 articles published in Swedish tabloid describing her character after she received her sentence in August 2017. The research questions were: How is Johanna Möller portrayed as a character? How is Johanna Möller portrayed as a criminal? How is Johanna Möller portrayed as a woman? Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the associated three-dimensional model was conducted to find and dissect discourses in the articles. We carried out the analysis from a gender-related theoretical perspective and drew parallels to earlier research concerning media and crime.  Through the analysis, five discourses could be identified; The Non-agent, The Evil Woman and The Good Boy, Temptress, The Bad Mother and She Who Never Does Right.    Not seldom is Johanna Möller described as promiscuous, evil and manipulative. Her role as a mother is also being repeatedly criticized even though her actual crimes are not related to her motherhood. Accordingly, the journalists are constantly looking for an explanation for her abnormal behaviour and she is often being described as a cold hearted yet emotional person, which can be seen as a significant paradox in the portrayal of her. Our conclusion is that no matter Johanna Möller’s actual crimes, her role as a woman has become the most present aspect of her actions.

Hausmann, Michael. "Johanna Ey : a critical reappraisal." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/987/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study draws on and interprets an extensive corpus of archived materials, in particular from the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf, to offer the first wide-ranging critical analysis of the written and visual images of the life and legend of Weimar Germany’s most important ‘modern’ art dealers - Johanna Ey (1864 - 1947), commonly known as ‘Mutter Ey’. Once feted by the press as the most portrayed woman in Germany, she contributed greatly to the careers of artists such as Max Ernst, Otto Dix, Gert Wollheim, Otto Pankok and many others and was a vital figure in the ‘modern’ Düsseldorf art scene until she was evicted from her gallery by the Nazis in 1934. This study opens with a factual overview of Ey’s biography. Chapters are then devoted to an analysis of the development, reception and prevalence of aspects of her legend: the use of the ‘Mutter Ey’ image in the Weimar Period; an exploration of the notion of Ey’s modernity using the trope of the ‘Neue Frau’; an investigation into her attitude to politics in general and the Nazis in particular, in the first detailed reading of Ey’s 1936 memoirs and her correspondence from 1933-1947; and an analysis of the factors influencing the rise, fall and rise of her celebrity status and her memorialisation since her death.

Abstract:
The tendency of today’s historiography to portray early 18th-century Italian opera as a dichotomy between opera seria and opera buffa takes too little account of the existence of genera mixta. However, contemporary composers and authors sometimes referred to a tripartiton. In his treatise Der vollkommene Capellmeister (1739), Johann Mattheson distinguishes between tragedy, comedy and satire. His description of the melodies from a satirical opera is limited to the statement that they are “ridiculous, poseuristic and prickly”. This definition can be applied to the analysis of dramatic vocal works with the help of Gérard Genette’s category of “burlesque travesty” which describes the stylistic degradation of a tragic-heroic subject as a satirical function. This stylistic mixture is achieved by the use of specific musical devices, which are shown in this article on the basis of case studies on music by Francesco Bartolomeo Conti, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Händel.
