Abstract This article surveys John Chrysostom’s preaching on the biblical figures of Job and his wife. Chrysostom’s exegesis is situated into two contexts: (1) his related interpretation of Adam and Eve in Genesis, and (2) his theology of adaptable divine pedagogy and practice of medico-philosophical psychagogy. This twofold contextualization enables us to see how Chrysostom deploys these figures in his preaching as a means of re-ordering gendered marital relationships within the late antique Christian household and cultivating an attentiveness to the methods of divine pedagogy. Abstract Is Adam merely a bad moral example, or has his first sin left a lasting impact on the human condition? The current paper revisits the traditional juxtaposition between John Chrysostom and Augustine of Hippo as holding, respectively, a preference for humankind’s autonomy and heteronomy. The way both perceived Adam as an example serves, in this paper, as a concrete case study. First, we investigate how both preachers understand the notion of exemplarity, and how they develop their own pedagogy based on examples. Next, we observe how both preachers apply these pastoral didactics to the f

The fascination with St. Paul’s activity was one of St. John Chrysostom characteristic features. In the attitude of the Antiochian we can see not only true admiration but also the will to imitate St. Paul as a guiding light of Christian involvement and activity. St. John Chrysostom has often underlined the pedagogical attitude of the Apostle towards the audi- ence in his letters. Such appraisal of the activity of the Apostle of Nations by the Patriarch of Constantinople determined his own pastoral attitude. This article discusses and describes the role of the pastor as a preacher in the spiritual growth of the church taught by John Chrysostom. Every pastor as a preacher must reach 3 depths of approach to preaching the word of God; Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor. Occasional sermons belong to the most difficult sermons as they require good knowledge of the revealed truth, preaching talent, the ability to think in the category of synthesis and a strong personality of the preacher. In the sermons Against the Jew, On the Statutes, and After the fall of Eutropius John Chrysostom has proved that he has mastered the art of occasional sermons in a perfect way.

Through the analysis of how biblical quotations function within the Slovo o rasslablennom (Sermon on the Paralytic) by Kirill Turovskij (1130–1182), the author aims at verifying the validity and stability of the “functional model” she previously deduced from the analysis of the same author’s Slovo na verbnoe voskresenʹe (Sermon for Palm Sunday). Textual analysis demonstrates that both writings differ from the functional model shared by sermons of Bishop Luka Židjata († 1059), Metropolitan Nikifor I († 1121), Hegumen Moisej († 1187), and Bishop Serapion Vladimirskij († 1275) in that they pursue

From as early as 200 C.E., the church made the spring paschal celebration its primary occasion for baptizing new converts. A week of intense preparation climaxed for the candidates in their reception of baptism early on Easter Sunday. During the fourth century, the preliminary preparation of candidates during Lent included attendance at lectures that gave doctrinal instruction. The catechumens who were ready to receive baptism at the coming Pasch turned in their names to be enrolled for the period of teaching. The rise of Late Antiquity as a separate discipline, with its focus on social history, has meant that the vast homiletic corpus of John Chrysostom has received renewed attention as a source for the wider cultural and historical context within which his sermons were preached. Recent studies have demonstrated the exciting potential his sermons have to shed light on aspects of daily life, popular attitudes and practices of lay piety. In short, Chrysostom's sermons have been recognised as a valuable source for the study of 'popular Christianity' and the extent of Christianization at the end of the

This study aims to establish the semantic range of πίστις (‘faith’) in fourth century Christian discourse using the preaching of John Chrysostom as a source base. Against previous scholarship which sees πίστις as primarily a cognitive or propositional term referring to belief, this study uses a close examination of Chrysostom’s preaching to argue that the relational nature of the term was central to its significance for fourth century preaching as Christians considered their own faith and biblical texts. Chrysostom uses the reciprocal, relational character of πίστις to emphasise loyalty, trust

Iremos
