Abstract:
This article examines Robert F. Kennedy’s status as an icon to the American public and both liberals and conservatives. The difficulty in categorizing Kennedy’s complex political beliefs within just one of many liberal traditions is key to understanding his popularity with various—and often opposing—groups within American politics. Whereas conservatives favor Kennedy’s tough attitude on law-and-order, liberals admire Kennedy’s electoral appeal and ability to unite voters. However, the American people have adopted Kennedy as a non-partisan icon in the tradition of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and John F. Kennedy. Starting with Kennedy’s death, the American people remembered him as a martyr of American democracy, justice, and equality. In the new millennium, Kennedy has frequently been presented in the media and political rhetoric as tough, but compassionate, and thereby as a liberal icon for the ages.

Abstract:
Opinions of John F. Kennedy differ but it is commonly agreed that he was an impatient man and easily bored (though when he was laid up lengthily in a hospital bed, which happened not infrequently, his stoicism and patience were nothing short of astonishing). It stands to reason, then, that one of the things that bored him in the 1950s was the cold war, by then solidified into a dogmatic and rigid system.1 It is the ideological nature of that boredom, or discomfort, its dilemmas and limits, that interest me here. My double wager is that if one pursues Kennedy's idiosyncrasies on this score without reading him backwards from the unflinching coldwar policies he actually launched, apparently, in his presidency, then one will learn something both about the cold war at the time and about Kennedy himself.

Aircraft Carriers are naval vessels that allow for landing and take-off of military aircraft. Typically, Aircraft Carriers are active for 50 to 60 years then need to be retired or decommissioned. The ship is either torn apart for resources, sunk to the bottom of the ocean to serve as an artificial reef, or tied up to a dock indefinitely to serve as a sterile museum. The purpose of this research is to explore a fourth option that allows the public to appreciate the steel beasts in a manner that is respective and full of awe.

Full text
Abstract:

Jeffery K. Tulis authored a book entitled The Rhetorical Presidency, in which he argues the role of the United States chief executive now centers on his, or her, ability to speak over Congress and directly to the public. A modern or contemporary president’s ability to accomplish roles typically associated with the executive office is principally dependent on his/her implicit role: to appeal to public opinion. Presidential power comes from how effectively the chief executive can employ rhetorical discourse to affect change from the audience. This is an interesting concept for consideration, especially as it relates to contemporary President John F. Kennedy. In a 2013 Gallup poll, Americans rated Kennedy as the most outstanding, above average president in the contemporary era—the inception of which came around the turn of the 20th century. The primary inquiry, “why is this so,” can be answered through an examination into Kennedy’s rhetorical discourse, specifically his foreign crisis speeches. This thesis’ primary analysis centers on Kennedy’s address to the American Society of Newspaper Editors on April 20, 1961 following the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion on Cuba. Utilizing a unique analytic framework provided from the theoretical understandings of Lloyd F. Bitzer’s rhetorical situation and Karlyn Kohrs Campbell and Kathleen Hall Jamieson’s rhetorical hybrids model, with supplement aide from scholars such as Bonnie Dow and Denise Bostdorff, the aim is to provide value to the subject of rhetorical communication by researching, studying and analyzing an area of interest that has not received much to any scholarly emphasis in the past.

Abstract:
"Shuttle" presents a text' with maps and color photographs, suitable for publication, to inform members of the news media uninformed with space shuttle flights. Because of the voluminous press materials for shuttle missions submitted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, this creative project attempted to compile information as to the most relevant topics of space shuttle flights obtained from official NASA publications, interviews, transcripts and from veteran space center reporters. Since the author has photographed and covered six Orbiter missions for newspapers and radio, personal observations in this creative project explain a "behind-the-scenes” of varying practical experience at the John F. Kennedy Space Center.NASA has four space shuttles--Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis. From that combined "space pool" at least 400 manned missions are planned, some more ambitious than others. But each of the four Orbiters will require relevant information on the part of media representatives at Kennedy, especially those at the space center for the very first time. "Shuttle" is intended to help meet those news responsibilities.

Abstract:
<p>The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is located on the banks of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The Kennedy Center is home to the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera and The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. In addition to being the nation's busiest arts facility, the Kennedy Center is also a "Living Memorial" to President Kennedy. The south expansion of the Kennedy Center, known as the REACH, provides much needed educational and rehearsal space, as well as a pedestrian link to the nearby Memorials.</p><p>The new structure combines practicality, versatility and innovation. Each surface and space created is unique, forming complex geometries and large span to depth ratios. The cast-in-place concrete structure is exposed on the interior or the exterior, including three white concrete pavilions rising out of the landscaped substructure. The pedestrian bridge connects the Kennedy Center to the river with over a 35-to-1 span to depth ratio. The REACH is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2019.</p>

In ASME 1992 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/92-gt-040.

Full text
Abstract:
In early 1994 a 100 MW LM6000 combined cycle cogeneration plant will begin operation at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Thanks to the extremely high simple cycle efficiency of the LM6000 gas turbine (8200 BTU/KWH, 8650 kJ/KWH-LHV dry) and a sophisticated three-pressure steam generating system, a heat rate below 7000 BTU/KWH-LHV (7380 kJ/KWH-LHV) is expected when operating in combined cycle mode. The dual-spool LM6000 achieves its efficiency by means of a 30:1 compression ratio. 2100 F. (1149 C.) firing temperatures and the direct coupling of the low compressor/turbine rotor to the electric generator. The efficiency of the heat recovery steam generator results from the use of three economizers, three evaporators and two superheaters combined with a patented feedwater heating system which yields a 245 F. (118 C.) exhaust stack temperature. Operating flexibility is essential in this application. While the dual-fueled plant is designed for pure combined cycle operation, most of the time it will operate in a cogeneration mode — producing up to 250 × 106 BTU/HR (264 × 106 kJ/HR) of steam for heating in the winter and 7000 (24,618 KW) tons of chilling for air conditioning airport terminals in the summer. The waste heat boilers are designed to be supplementary fired on gas fuel when the airport requires the 110 MW maximum capacity of the plant simultaneously with the maximum thermal load of 250 × 106 BTU/HR (264 × 106 kJ/HR). NOx emissions are controlled with a combination of water injection in the turbine combustors and a dual-function catalyst SCR/CO converter. CO is controlled by means of the converter. Combined gas turbine and duct burner NOx is maintained below 9.0 PPMV dry (@ 15% O2) and CO below 1.5 PPH (0.68 KG/HR) dry (@ 15% O2) when operating on gas fuel. Cycle details, equipment selection and operation as well as the plant economics provide a useful insight into the benefits of these recent developments in gas turbine and heat recovery combined cycle cogeneration technology.

Abstract:
The Federal Aviation Administration instrumented four concrete slabs of a taxiway at the John F. Kennedy International Airport to collect pavement responses under aircraft and environmental loading. The study started with developing preprocessing scripts to organize, structure, and clean the collected data. As a result of the preprocessing step, the data became easier and more intuitive for pavement engineers and researchers to transform and process. After the data were cleaned and organized, they were used to develop two prediction models. The first prediction model employs a Bayesian calibration framework to estimate the unknown material parameters of the concrete pavement. Additionally, the posterior distributions resulting from the calibration process served as a sensitivity analysis by reporting the significance of each parameter for temperature distribution. The second prediction model utilized a machine-learning (ML) algorithm to predict pavement responses under aircraft and environmental loadings. The results demonstrated that ML can predict the responses with high accuracy at a low computational cost. This project highlighted the potential of using ML for future pavement design guidelines as more instrumentation data from future projects are collected to incorporate various material properties and pavement structures.
