Abstract:
Famous Assassinations in World History: An Encyclopedia includes two volumes of 266 entries of assassinations and attempted assassinations of world political leaders from 465 BCE to 2012. Notable names include John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Adolf Hitler, Benazir Bhutto, Rasputin, and Osama bin Laden. The only nonpolitical person included is John Lennon, included because of his sociopolitical involvement toward the end of his life. Four entries are included on organizations involved in multiple assassinations such as the Ku Klux Klan. The entries, arranged alphabetically, include a description of the assassination, a profile of the victim, and an explanation of how the assassination or attempted assassination effected politics and society of the time.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTAccusations of conspiracy are nothing new in American politics, but examples in which the government—usually cast as a key player in conspiracy theories—goes on record to corroborate that a conspiracy occurred are rare. I leveraged an experiment that randomly exposes both college-student and general-public subject pools to information about the 1979 House Select Committee on Assassination report of a probable conspiracy in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. I find that those exposed to government corroboration of a conspiracy (1) are more prone to anger in response to the government report; (2) engage in an increased search of available media information about the assassination; and (3) are more likely to agree with the conclusion of a conspiracy in Kennedy’s murder. Implications for additional research about government pronouncements on controversial issues and follow-on public reaction also are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis begins by situating the work of Walter Benjamin in its historical complexity and examining the conceptual underpinnings of his phantasmagoria. Benjamin's Arcades Project is considered in light of his attempts to resituate primary structuring dichotomies in a fluid and dynamic configuration. These dichotomies include the political and the apolitical, the material and the immaterial, and the past and the present. The phantasmagoria-as-metaphor is then employed as a methodological framework for analyzing the ever-circulating images of John F. Kennedy.
This thesis is primarily concerned with the conceptual tools necessary to argue that an image is more "real" than its real-life counterpart, that is, real enough to carry resonances that extend beyond both its diminutive "artifice", and its original context. The relations between the immaterial image and its material referent are discussed as complementary and shifting, rather than oppositional and static. This thesis explores the possible and the actual convergence of the image and its material counterparts.

Lauchlan, Angus. "Constructing white Texas maleness : from the Texas Centennial of 1936 to the aftermath of President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445655/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis demonstrates how the popular image of white Texas masculinity was constructed and used for political purposes in the period between the Texas Centennial in 1936 and the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, in 1963. The image of white Texas maleness was reconstructed in the 1930s by a group of Texas writers/academics led by J. Frank Dobie, J. EvettsTlaley and Walter PrescottJVebb. Their version of Texas male mythology gave a degree of intellectual credence to the stereotyped version of Texas manhood, which was founded on the problems and exploits of stronanaconfident individualistic men and their attempts to maintain or to wrest power. This manner of Texas maleness had its root in the mix of truth and mythology which popularly represented nineteenth century Texas history. These writers were profoundly influenced by the political environment of their time and their* perspective on Texas maleness reflected this. 1 Other writers, most notably Edward Anderson and Nelson Agren, with an equally distinct but separate political agenda, challenged the basis of the white Texas male's iconic status and offered a radically different view of Texas manhood. Therefore, two ideologically distinct versions of white Texas maleness, one based on those with societal power and influence, and the other based on those without, were created. The societal import of the concept of white Texas maleness was reflected in the attitude of the state's press and the adoption of the stereotypical image by those in Texas who wielded socio-economic and political power. Central to the thesis is how conflicting arms of the Texas press, liberal and conservative, saw and addressed the image of the state's men. The thesis will also discuss how the obvious political potential of the stereotyped image was employed in film and literature during politically sensitive periods in American history. For example, the hnageof white Texas maleness in film and literaturejjeerjgrated in the aftermath of the Kennedy killing and the subsequent Presidency of the Texan, Lyndon Johnson, when many writers and film-makers saw Texas and its manhood as representing all that they believed to be wrong with American society.

Abstract:
Aircraft Carriers are naval vessels that allow for landing and take-off of military aircraft. Typically, Aircraft Carriers are active for 50 to 60 years then need to be retired or decommissioned. The ship is either torn apart for resources, sunk to the bottom of the ocean to serve as an artificial reef, or tied up to a dock indefinitely to serve as a sterile museum. The purpose of this research is to explore a fourth option that allows the public to appreciate the steel beasts in a manner that is respective and full of awe.

Abstract:
<p>The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is located on the banks of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The Kennedy Center is home to the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera and The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. In addition to being the nation's busiest arts facility, the Kennedy Center is also a "Living Memorial" to President Kennedy. The south expansion of the Kennedy Center, known as the REACH, provides much needed educational and rehearsal space, as well as a pedestrian link to the nearby Memorials.</p><p>The new structure combines practicality, versatility and innovation. Each surface and space created is unique, forming complex geometries and large span to depth ratios. The cast-in-place concrete structure is exposed on the interior or the exterior, including three white concrete pavilions rising out of the landscaped substructure. The pedestrian bridge connects the Kennedy Center to the river with over a 35-to-1 span to depth ratio. The REACH is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2019.</p>

In ASME 1992 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/92-gt-040.

Full text
Abstract:
In early 1994 a 100 MW LM6000 combined cycle cogeneration plant will begin operation at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Thanks to the extremely high simple cycle efficiency of the LM6000 gas turbine (8200 BTU/KWH, 8650 kJ/KWH-LHV dry) and a sophisticated three-pressure steam generating system, a heat rate below 7000 BTU/KWH-LHV (7380 kJ/KWH-LHV) is expected when operating in combined cycle mode. The dual-spool LM6000 achieves its efficiency by means of a 30:1 compression ratio. 2100 F. (1149 C.) firing temperatures and the direct coupling of the low compressor/turbine rotor to the electric generator. The efficiency of the heat recovery steam generator results from the use of three economizers, three evaporators and two superheaters combined with a patented feedwater heating system which yields a 245 F. (118 C.) exhaust stack temperature. Operating flexibility is essential in this application. While the dual-fueled plant is designed for pure combined cycle operation, most of the time it will operate in a cogeneration mode — producing up to 250 × 106 BTU/HR (264 × 106 kJ/HR) of steam for heating in the winter and 7000 (24,618 KW) tons of chilling for air conditioning airport terminals in the summer. The waste heat boilers are designed to be supplementary fired on gas fuel when the airport requires the 110 MW maximum capacity of the plant simultaneously with the maximum thermal load of 250 × 106 BTU/HR (264 × 106 kJ/HR). NOx emissions are controlled with a combination of water injection in the turbine combustors and a dual-function catalyst SCR/CO converter. CO is controlled by means of the converter. Combined gas turbine and duct burner NOx is maintained below 9.0 PPMV dry (@ 15% O2) and CO below 1.5 PPH (0.68 KG/HR) dry (@ 15% O2) when operating on gas fuel. Cycle details, equipment selection and operation as well as the plant economics provide a useful insight into the benefits of these recent developments in gas turbine and heat recovery combined cycle cogeneration technology.
