Abstract:
This piece explores the origins of the anomalous 1655 New Haven statute against sodomy that broke with legal traditions and codes both in England and New England. A lengthy and extraordinarily specific piece of legislation, the New Haven law stands in stark contrast to the minimalist language favored by the English in the early seventeenth century. When viewed within the larger context of clerical animosities, particularly between Thomas Hooker and John Cotton, there is a strong circumstantial case to make for its implementation as an extension of John Cotton's rejected Massachusetts Bay legal

Two scholars debate whether John Davenport, pastor of the New Haven church (1638–67), required that a prospective church member offer a personal account of the workings of God's saving grace in him/her to be granted church membership, a matter that, in its broader implications, has significant importance for puritan studies.

On September 18, 1890, an enthusiastic and portly man on a train from Chicago to New Haven scribbled in a notebook. The man was William Rainey Harper, and the contents of his notebook would become the plans for The University of Chicago. Upon arriving in New Haven, he wrote a letter to John D. Rockefeller, who would finance Harper's vision for a university. Harper wrote, On my way from Chicago the whole thing outlined itself in my mind and I have a plan which is at the same time unique and comprehensive, which I am persuaded will revolutionize study in this country…. Abstract:
In tracing the history of the TIROS meteorological satellite system, this dissertation details the convergence of two communities: the DOD space scientists who established US capability to launch and operate these remote sensing systems and the US Weather Bureau meteorologists who would be the managers and users of satellite data. Between 1946 and 1964, these persons participated in successive coalitions. These coalitions were necessary in part because satellite systems were too big—geographically, fiscally, and technically—to be developed and operated within a single institution. Thus,

Abstract:
Criscuolo Chiara, Ralf Martin, Henry G. Abstract:
Heywood’s last years in exile in the Netherlands are the subject of this penultimate chapter. It looks at his encounter in Mechelen with the English agent (and fellow author) Thomas Wilson, and the plaintive letters that he wrote to Lord Burghley in its aftermath. It traces Heywood’s struggles for financial security after the confiscation of his lands and revenues following his flight into exile, and charts his harrowing experiences during the religious upheavals in Antwerp where he had sought safe haven with his son Ellis in the house of the Jesuits. His final escape to Louvain and the deaths of Ellis and Heywood himself within months of each other in 1578 bring the story of the playwright’s life to an end. ‘Merry’ to the last, Heywood reputedly jested on his deathbed, once more evoking the example of More, who had gone to the scaffold jesting with his captors.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how France emerged both as a safe haven on the continent between the wars and as a maternal haven with Paris its undisputed capital. It discusses the demographic angst and pronatalist zeal that gripped French decision makers in the early Third Republic, which encouraged population-minded state officials and benevolent bourgeoises of private charities to join forces for the sake of the future of France. It also explains how public assistance was fleshed out by scores of private charitable organizations that were run by middle-class Frenchwomen who had emerged over the course of the nineteenth century. The chapter mentions social workers of welfarist organizations that provided French and foreign mothers financial, social, and emotional assistance with the tasks of childbearing, child-rearing, and household management. The chapter also describes public and private assistance networks that forged a wide-ranging maternalist and familialist welfare world in France.

Abstract:
This chapter describes Georgian London, which offered exceptional opportunities for advancement to ambitious Jews who had shed the discipline of traditional Judaism. It explores the Jewish community as a network of voluntary associations rather than a state-backed corporate body on the Continent that exercised no police authority over individual Jews. The chapter demonstrates the hedonistic ethic of consumption and expenditure of English landowners and their healthy regard for the pursuit of wealth in a variety of fields that made London a haven for adventurers and climbers who knew how to satisfy aristocratic needs and exploit aristocratic weaknesses. The chapter mentions John King, who was a moneylender who flourished in the freewheeling atmosphere of late Georgian London. It talks about King's links to other Jews as he was one of the best-known Jews in London between 1780 and 1820.

Abstract:
Camp is employed in 1884 by the New Haven Clock Company (NHCC) and begins work that fall in the company’s New York City store. In 1885 Harvard’s faculty athletic committee bans football at Harvard as too brutal. Continuing to be involved in football and its management and promotion, Camp responds to the Harvard ban in the Yale News, contending that the Harvard faculty committee members have not sufficiently informed themselves about the game to make sound decisions. He gives an impassioned description of players’ love for football. Harvard resigns from, and Pennsylvania and Wesleyan join, the Intercollegiate Football Association. Later in the year, the Harvard athletic committee is reconstituted to include two students, a graduate interested in sports, a physician, and only one faculty member. The reconstituted committee reinstates football after a year’s absence, but Harvard remains out of the IFA.
