Abstract:
John Holland’s theory of career orientations advises people to select careers that are congruent with their personalities. Similarly, self-concordance theory, based in self-determination theory, advises people to select personal goals that match their autonomous interests and identifications. We compared the predictive efficacy of the two theories in two studies of undergraduates, using the six career areas of Holland theory (RIASEC: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional) as a common base. Multilevel logit modeling in Study 1 showed that both the Holland score and an aggregate self-concordance score predicted independent variance in the outcome variable, current career choices. These effects were replicated in Study 2. Supplementary analyses showed that the identified motivation subscale was the primary source of these effects. Thus, career counselors may want to consider assessing students’ self-concordance for the six RIASEC domains, in particular their levels of identified motivation for those domains, in addition to assessing their Holland codes.

Abstract:
John Holland's typological theory of persons and environments is regarded as the most influential in the field of career counseling (Brown, 2002), but few have carried the theory over to the field of higher education and academic advising (Smart, Feldman, & Ethington, 2000). Therefore, Holland's theory and the subsequent research on it were explored to determine if the theory would be an appropriate means of understanding the behavior and organization of college faculty members and students. A practical approach for integrating a Holland-based system of academic advising and career counseling is discussed.

Abstract:
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES 1. INTRODUCTION: In view of the great demand for career guidance, it was necessary to give attention to the development and adaptation of psychometric instruments. This led to important development in this area. The Self-Directed Search (SDS) interest questionnaire of J.L. Holland was included in a career guidance programme for black matriculation pupils resulting in the need to investigate the utility of the SDS for black pupils. The study was conducted with this objective in mind. 2. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were as follows: 2.1 PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: 2.1.1 Determining the psychometric suitability of the SDS for blacks with respect to some psychometric and statistical qualities, namely item analysis, means, reliability, intercorrelations of the fields and the factorial structure of the construct. 2.2 SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: 2.2.1 Determining the utility of the SDS in a career guidance set-up for this group, by giving attention to the principles of consistency and congruency; 2.2.2 determining the utility of the SDS as part of a career guidance programme for blacks by using stepwise regression and 2.2.3 determining the distribution of the interests for this group as indicated by the SDS. CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE STUDY In this chapter it was necessary to look at the following aspects: • theories of vocational choice and • aptitude, attitude and interest. In the section on theories of vocational choice or career development, reference was made to the theories of Ginzberg and associates. Super, Roe, Hoppock, Holland, decision-making models as well as the behavioristic, sociological and psychoanalitical approaches. Then aptituae, attitude and interest were discussed with special emphasis on the conceptual description, structure and measurement of the concepts. CHAPTER 3: METHOD OF INVESTIGATION In this chapter the following aspects were discussed: • the sample; • the psychometric tests used in the research and • the statistical methods used. A random sample was selected. pupils of Lebowa and Gazankulu. The sample consisted of standard 10 The psychometric tests included in the vocational guidance programme were: • an aptitude test battery (AAT); • an interest questionnaire (SDS) and • the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA). Finally the statistical methods were discussed, namely item analysis, means ana standard deviations, correlations, factor analysis, procedures to determine consistency and congruency, stepwise regression and distribution of SDS-codes. CHAPTER 4: DISCUSSION OF RESULTS In summary it is clear that the results in general give an indication that the SDS has utility with blacks. The item analysis of the 228 items indicated that only 15 items needed revision. The means indicated that there is no notable difference between this and other samples. The reliability coefficients are satisfactory and are good in comparison with the results obtained by Holland and others. The intercorrelations between the six personality types confirmed relationships as described by Holland. The factor analysis results indicated that the SDS has a definite structure. Procedures conducted to determine consistency and congruency as defined by Holland confirmed the use of the concepts. The Realistic, Enterprising and Investigative fields were identified as contributing to the prediction of academic achievement. It was also indicated that most of the pupils resemble the Social personality type as defined by Holland. CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION In summary the conclusion can be made that the SDS has utility for use with black pupils in a vocational guidance situation.

Abstract:
Previous research has provided evidence of relationships between vocational interests and other psychological variables. Test scores from the VPI and FIRO-B for 699 white male job applicants were subjected to multiple regression analyses to determine if individual interest scales could be predicted by particular configurations of interpersonal need scales. It was hypothesized that Enterprising, Realistic, and Investigative interests would be predicted by Inclusion and Control needs and Social interests by Inclusion, Control, and Affection needs. To control for effects of sample size, a smaller sample (n = 125) was randomly drawn from the original data and subjected to identical analyses. Results indicated only partial support for some hypotheses and revealed little common variance between the two domains.

Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between the sub-components of Holland's Self-Directed Search and independent, objective measures of ability using a comprehensive battery of well-validated tests of primary abilities corresponding to each of Holland's six vocational interest types. The sample consisted of 149 female undergraduate students, ages 18-25. Correlation of the ability measure test scores with the four Self-Directed Search subcomponents revealed that the subtests were not related to corresponding measures of ability in a consistent fashion. Implications for the use of the Self-Directed Search in assessing abilities are discussed along with suggestions for future research investigating the relationhip between interest in ventories and the measurement of primary abilities.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Noted complex adaptive system researcher John H. Holland now receives acclaim from many quarters, but it is important to understand that this man and his ideas have been controversial since the beginning of his career. Genetic algorithms (GAs) were ignored or disparaged throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and even now, as these and his other ideas receive worldwide recognition in broad outline, the specifics of his mode of thought and insight are rejected by many who claim to embrace his key insights. This is a mistake. I have known John Holland for 23 years, and I have learned many things from him, but a critical influence has been his style of thought, in particular, his style of modeling. John has an uncanny knack of getting to the heart of a matter through the construction of what I call little models. Sometimes these models are verbal, sometimes they are mathematical, but they almost always shed a great deal of light on some nagging question in the analysis and design of complex systems. In this chapter, I propose to briefly explore John Holland's style of little modeling, and better understand its nature, its essence, and why some of those who embrace the broad outlines of his teaching have been slow to embrace the details of his modeling and the style of his thought. The exploration begins by recalling my own first impressions of John Holland and his style of thought, impressions made 23 years ago in a classroom in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It continues with a case study in Holland-style facetwise model building in constructing a takeover time model. It continues by integrating the takeover time model with a model of innovation on dimensional grounds. Finally, the Hollandian mode of model building is placed on intellectual terra firma with an economic argument, suggesting that the costs of modeling or thought must be weighed in relation to the model's benefits in understanding or designing a complex system.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to help university applicants in their transition phase from high-school to tertiary education starting with their first life-long decision concerning their choice of the field of study. The construction of the decision support system has evolved into an ontology-based model. The model, as well as the decision making rules, have been formulated based on the research study of the cohort of 69000 students of the University of Alicante between 2010 and 2018. The educational and psychological processes have been studied in order to identify the pivot moments and the factors that may lead to an adequate decision making or to an objectively wrong decision which eventually ends up in a drop-out of studies. Analysing the existing methods of occupational and educational choice assistance, the method of John L. Holland on “A Psychological Classification of Occupations” has been selected as the most viable and convenient for this purpose. The Holland Codes have been adopted as a lingua franca of this ontology-based model. As a result, the ontology-based decision support system provides assistance in decision making using the Holland Code terminology and practically unlimited complexity of the object and data properties of and ontological presentation of knowledge.
