Abstract:
John Holland’s theory of career orientations advises people to select careers that are congruent with their personalities. Similarly, self-concordance theory, based in self-determination theory, advises people to select personal goals that match their autonomous interests and identifications. We compared the predictive efficacy of the two theories in two studies of undergraduates, using the six career areas of Holland theory (RIASEC: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional) as a common base. Multilevel logit modeling in Study 1 showed that both the Holland score and an aggregate self-concordance score predicted independent variance in the outcome variable, current career choices. These effects were replicated in Study 2. Supplementary analyses showed that the identified motivation subscale was the primary source of these effects. Thus, career counselors may want to consider assessing students’ self-concordance for the six RIASEC domains, in particular their levels of identified motivation for those domains, in addition to assessing their Holland codes.

Abstract:
John Holland's typological theory of persons and environments is regarded as the most influential in the field of career counseling (Brown, 2002), but few have carried the theory over to the field of higher education and academic advising (Smart, Feldman, & Ethington, 2000). Therefore, Holland's theory and the subsequent research on it were explored to determine if the theory would be an appropriate means of understanding the behavior and organization of college faculty members and students. A practical approach for integrating a Holland-based system of academic advising and career counseling is discussed.

Abstract:
Penelitian didasari adanya fenomena siswa yang belum memahami potensi dan minat karir sehingga tidak mengetahui arah karir selanjutnya. Tujuan penelitian ialah untuk mengetahui tingkat efektivitas tes minat karir John L. Holland untuk meningkatkan kematangan karir siswa kelas XII IPA di SMA Negeri 5 Kota Serang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode pra eksperimen dengan one-group pre-test post-test design. Data hasil penelitian dianalisis dengan teknik uji wilcoxon. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian bahwa terjadi perbedaan yang signifikan pada hasil pre-test dan hasil post-test kematangan karir siswa kelas XII IPA SMAN 5 Kota Serang, analisis perhitungannya menunjukkan nilai Asymp. Significance < dari 0,05 yaitu 0,012 < 0,05 maka hipotesis di terima. Sehingga bimbingan kelompok berbasis tes minat karir John L. Holland efektif untuk meningkatkan kematangan karir siswa.

Abstract When placing Hopkins in the divisive and impassioned religious and academic world of mid-Victorian Oxford, scholars have frequently drawn attention to those University tutors and senior churchmen who in different ways influenced his mental and religious development: Benjamin Jowett, Walter Pater, Henry Parry Liddon, and (more distantly, from Birmingham) John Henry Newman. In comparison, relatively little attention has been paid to Hopkins’s own undergraduate friends and contemporaries at Balliol College, or to the question of how other young men responded to the same set of religious circumstances and intellectual influences. In this study Henry Scott Holland (1847–1918) is selected to illustrate discernible Anglican parallels to particular aspects of Hopkins’s literary style and religious faith. Examining the ways Holland’s Anglicanism resembles, engages, contests, and shadows the early spirituality of Hopkins throws useful light on their overlapping academic and religious contexts. Particular attention is paid to examples of shared vocabulary, to themes from Holland’s published sermons and religious writings, which correlate to elements of Hopkins’s work, and especially to Holland’s vision of a kenotic “law of sacrifice” set in the life of the Holy Trinity. Key works such as Holland’s Logic and Life (1882) and the influential volume of Anglican essays Lux Mundi: A Series of Studies in the Religion of the Incarnation (1889) are utilized to inform a new perspective on Hopkins’s sermons and devotional writings.

John White was appointed chief surgeon to the First Fleet on 24 October 1786 and sailed with that fleet, aboard theCharlotte, on 13 May 1787 for Botany Bay on the eastern seaboard of New Holland (Australia) where a penal colony was to be established. Between 18 and 20 January 1788 the entire fleet arrived at its destination and thus began the settlement of Australia by Europeans. White served as surgeon-general of the new colony, New South Wales, for almost six years until 17 December 1794 when he sailed on theDaedalusfor Europe, never to return to Australia.

The article presents the results of field tests and experimental studies of the efficiency of the climatic air conditioning system (ACS) in the cab of a combine harvester “TORUM 785”. The studies were carried out according to the Russian methods recommended for use in field tests of tractors and self-propelled vehicles intended for agricultural work in the southern regions of Russia. In the course of the research, a sufficiently high efficiency of the climatic SCR of the cabin of the “TORUM 785” combine harvester was shown under various operating conditions. It is shown that the created climatic SCRs are not inferior to foreign models developed by such companies as John Deere, Claas and New Holland.

Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, comparar a localização dos comandos de operação em quatro tratores agrícolas novos, na faixa de 55 kW de potência: John Deere 5603, Massey Ferguson 4275, New Holland TL75E e Valtra A750. Utilizaram-se, como referência, as normas ABNT NBR ISO 4253 (1999) para determinação do Ponto de Referência do Assento (SIP) e ISO 15077 (1996), para determinação das regiões de alcance do operador sentado e das posições dos comandos de operação em relação ao SIP. Na análise do perfil vertical longitudinal os comandos frequentemente utilizados estiveram presentes, em maior número, na Zona de Conforto no trator Valtra A750 (38,5% dos comandos). Neste mesmo perfil, o trator John Deere 5603 apresentou não só 60,0% de seus comandos localizados dentro da Zona de Acesso mas também o menor percentual de comandos na Zona Inacessível do trator (20,0% dos comandos); já no perfil superior horizontal o trator Massey Ferguson 4275 apresentou 60,0% dos comandos na Zona de Conforto enquanto o trator Valtra A750 obteve o maior percentual de comandos localizados na Zona de Acesso e menor percentual na Zona Inacessíve, com 38,5 e 23,0%, respectivamente.

Este estudo investigou as correlações da versão brasileira do Self-Directed Search (SDS) de John L. Holland, com o Inventário Fatorial de Personalidade (IFP) avaliando um conjunto de necessidades conceituadas por Henrry Murray. O estudo foi realizado com 81 adolescentes, 76,8% mulheres a maioria com 16-17 anos que participavam de um programa de orientação profissional. Os coeficientes de consistência interna das escalas do SDS estiveram entre 0,86 a 0,94. As correlações significativas situaram-se entre os 0,22 a 0,39 e foram observadas entre o Tipo R com Heterossexualidade, O Tipo I com Exibição e Desabilidade; Tipo A com Assistência, Intracepção, Deferência e Afiliação; Tipo S com Assistência, Intracepção, Desejabilidade e correlação negativa com Agressão; Tipo E com Dominância, Desempenho, Exibição, Agressão, Autonomia, Heterossexualide e correlação negativa com Ordem; e Tipo C com Persistência. Estes resultados foram discutidos fazendo referência à precisão e validade do SDS.

Zusammenfassung. Vorgestellt wird die revidierte Form des Allgemeinen Interessen-Struktur-Tests (AIST-R) und des Umwelt-Struktur-Tests (UST-R). Das Verfahren basiert auf dem hexagonalen Interessenmodell von John Holland und ermöglicht die Messung von Interessen einer Person und Eigenschaften beruflicher Umwelten auf sechs Dimensionen. Im Vergleich zur Erstauflage des Verfahrens wurde fast die Hälfte der Items verändert, was die Verständlichkeit fördern und zur Berücksichtigung neuerer Berufsfelder führen soll. Der AIST-R/UST-R ist ein ökonomisch durchzuführendes und gut zu interpretierendes Verfahren, dessen Anwendungsbereich vor allem bei Berufs- und Laufbahnentscheidungen sowie in der Forschung gesehen wird. Der AIST-R wurde anhand eines verwandten Verfahrens, eines Persönlichkeitsverfahrens und an Schulnoten validiert. Inwieweit sich die revidierte Form des AIST auch als valide für z. B. berufliche Kriterien erweist, werden erst weitere Studien klären können. Für die Validität des UST-R und der Konsistenz- und Kongruenzannahmen liegen bislang nur Untersuchungen mit der unrevidierten Form vor.

O pedal de embreagem foi o comando que melhor atendeu à norma NBR ISO 4253 (51,4%), seguido dos pedais de freio (48,2%) e do pedal de acelerador (14,3%). Apenas 23,1% dos postos de operação amostrados atenderam à referida norma, considerando a localização do centro do volante de direção dentro dos limites da área ótima especificada pela mesma. A melhor conformidade com a NBR ISO 4253 foi encontrada no posto de operação correspondente aos modelos TS100, TS110 e TS120 (versão com cabina) da marca New Holland (100%), seguida do posto de operação que corresponde aos modelos 5605 e 5705 da marca John Deere (87,5%), tal que ao posto de operação referente aos modelos MF275, MF283, MF290, MF292, MF297, MF299, MF5275, MF5285 e MF5290 (versão com cabina) da marca Massey Ferguson.

Des tests de congélation en conditions contrôlées ont été réalisés au cours des automnes 1999 et 2000 sur des plants entiers de Rosa ‘Captain Samuel Holland’, de R ‘Champlain’, de R. ‘John Davis’et de R. ‘William Baffin’afin de déterminer la température la plus froide à laquelle ils peuvent survivre. En général, les différentes parties des plants se sont endurcies au froid entre la première série de tests (octobre), la deuxième série (novembre) et/ou la troisième série (décembre). Les TL50 associées à la survie des plants se rapprochent des T50 se rapportant aux dommages les plus sévères survenus sur les racines et des TL50 se rapportant aux dommages observés à la base de la partie aérienne des plants. Les plants qui ont survécu aux températures se situant immédiatement au-dessus des TL50 de la reprise accusent une diminution de croissance souvent très importante. La TL50 de la reprise des plants du cultivar ‘Champlain’é tait de l’ordre de -14,5 °C lors de la troisième série de tests alors que celles des autres cultivars variaient de -19,5 à -23,0 °C. In 1816 Joseph Blanco White visited the Trossachs, having travelled to Edinburgh as a member of the household of Lord and Lady Holland. Soon afterwards he wrote A Journey to the Trosacks in 1816, a short but fascinating account of his trip which has remained unpublished until now. Lucidly penned, this autograph text shows admiration for the Scottish wilderness and interest in technological feats such as the steamboat that he takes on the Firth of Forth, an absolute novelty at the time. Observations on Highlands customs and language, and literary allusions to Sterne, Scott, Johnson and Boswell add to the interest of this forgotten piece, as do remarks about John Murray the publisher and Dugald Stewart the philosopher. The aim of this article is to present for the first time this work as a document of literary and cultural importance, given the renewed interest of Romantic era scholarship in travel writing and in Blanco White, the most important Spanish cultural mediator in Britain during the first decades of the 19th century.

O peso do trator influi diretamente na recomendação e no seu desempenho a campo. Esta variável é, muitas vezes, característica do fabricante, induzindo a necessidade de informações comparativas entre os modelos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar os tratores agrícolas brasileiros no que se refere ao peso, visando obter dados que auxiliem na seleção e no seu uso adequado. O levantamento englobou 103 modelos de tratores comerciais das marcas Massey Ferguson, Agrale, New Holland, John Deere, Ursus e Valtra. Foram analisados os parâmetros peso e relação peso/potência, separadamente em diferentes marcas, tipo de tração e faixas de potência. A análise estatística foi feita através do teste t de Student. Foram observadas diferenças significativas para classificação de marcas e faixas de potência no parâmetro relação peso/potência, diferindo também no critério tipo de tração quando analisado o peso. Além disso, verificou-se que a relação peso/potência sem lastro diminui com o aumento da potência. Portanto, os tratores agrícolas de rodas brasileiros são heterogêneos no que se refere ao peso e à relação peso potência, o que afeta o desempenho econômico dos mesmos, sendo importantes fatores a serem considerados na seleção e no uso destas máquinas.

The current study aimed to develop a list of professional tendencies and verify the implications of its validity and reliability and know the professional tendencies and impact of gender variables and the degree of disability on hearing-impaired people&#39;s professional tendencies. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher developed the list of Arabized professional tendencies of John Holland in a way that suits the characteristics of the hearing-impaired and using the previous literature and previous studies, where the indications of validity and reliability were extracted from the pilot study, then the study tool was applied to the final sample, which consisted of (118) hearing-impaired individuals from deaf schools and vocational rehabilitation centers in Jordan who are in the stage of professional selection in cooperation with my translators of sign language of schools and rehabilitation centers, where the study reached the indications of validity and reliability of the study tool, the study also found that there was no effect of gender and degree of disability variable on the professional tendencies of hearing-impaired people, as it came out with a set of research and educational recommendations.

Speculation in Victorian Sensory Physiology and George Eliot’s ‘The Lifted Veil’” (pp. 369–403) George Eliot’s novella “The Lifted Veil” (1859) is often considered an outlier in Eliot’s realist corpus, perhaps due to its focus on controversial theories of mind (phrenology, animal magnetism) and physical medicine (blood transfusion, human experiment, reanimation). The story draws on a tradition of Gothic medicine long recognized in the romantic novel but less acknowledged in histories of clinical medicine. As this essay shows, however, mid-Victorian clinicians and researchers accepted speculative cases of hyperaesthesia, prevision, and telepathy as a path for skeptical neurological inquiry. The textbooks of physicians like John Hughes Bennett, William Carpenter, John Elliotson, Henry Holland, and Forbes Winslow codified a range of sensational phenomena, circulating cases like Latimer’s and considering both natural and supernatural explanations for them. The events in “The Lifted Veil” are thus more realistic than they may appear; and the story extends rather than interrupts the trace of science in Eliot’s early fiction. In Latimer’s story, Eliot plays with the boundaries of Victorian physiology, neurology, and cardiology and expands our view of what both Victorian science and realism accommodate. “The Lifted Veil” performs and invites the same dual movement that mid-Victorian scientists were developing, a two-step of speculation and skepticism. As in Eliot’s other work, the analogy with scientific inquiry grounds the story’s moral, aesthetic, and epistemological concerns about human knowledge. Finally, these oddities of Victorian nerve physiology paradoxically allow Eliot to make a familiar realist argument, for this sensational story celebrates ordinary life as rare and valuable.
