Navsaria, Koneshverrie. "Pope John Paul II: a psychobiographical study." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/3539.

Full text
Abstract:
This psychobiography is focussed on the life of Pope John Paul II, whose historical personage epitomises the redemptive theme of triumph over tragedy and eternal hope. A phenomenological approach to the study allowed the researcher to observe the subject’s lived experience through the theoretical lens of Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory as well has having his faith development illuminated by Fowler’s faith development theory. Together, these theories highlighted significant aspects of Pope John Paul II’s personality development, for the greater purpose of uncovering the significance of his historical personage by reconciling his spiritual, political and academic attributes. This psychobiographical undertaking was grounded in qualitative research in the form of a single case. Two methodological strategies were used in this study. Firstly, Alexander’s model was used to organise, extract, prioritise and analyse data. The indicators of salience ensured that all significant parts of biographical data were carefully considered for analysis. Guba’s criteria for trustworthiness guided the methodology to ensure reliable data extraction and interpretation. Posing specific questions to the data enabled the researcher to extract units of analysis relevant to the aim of the study. Secondly, the use of conceptual frameworks and matrices enabled the longitudinal exploration, categorisation and description of the stages of psychosocial and faith development. The findings of this psychobiographical study of Pope John Paul II strongly support the importance of Erikson’s (1950) theory in understanding the processes of personality development in an individual life. In this psychobiographical study, the complex process of adaption and growth was highlighted by Erikson’s (1950) theory and placed periods of Pope John Paul II’s development in context. This study also demonstrated that gaining meaning in life through faith (Fowler, 1981) provides the individual with greater internal support when adjusting to life changes. Furthermore, greater intentionality on the part of therapists to thread faith and spirituality into their practice, is evidence of the eugraphic impact of this study.

Smith, Stephanie. "Prolegomena to a theological theory of justice : a comparative study of Catholic and Protestant anthropological foundations for political-economic justice with special reference to Karol Wojtyla." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13540.

Full text
Abstract:
This work proposes that the foundation for justice in society begins with an understanding of personhood that begins with Christian theology. While ethical stances such as the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights are helpful in articulating the bounds of justice in society, such humanistic declarations and programs may reach an impasse if they do not incorporate the depth and complexity of human personhood revealed in Jesus Christ. I will make this argument by comparing the Christian anthropologies of two prominent advocates for social justice in the Catholic and Protestant traditions: Karol Wojytla/Pope John Paul II and Karl Barth. Parts One and Two of this thesis will examine the strong critique which both of these men offered within their own historical context toward systems which denied the vital connection between Christian theology and persons in society. These parts will outline the distinctly Christian anthropologies that each theologian proposed as a basis for social justice. The final part of this thesis will set these two anthropologies in critical interaction with one another in the key area of divergence: the ontology of human personhood and the methodological issues integral to it. While John Paul has raised critical issues which are central to social ethics and has articulated many of the complexities of human action, Karl Barth's Christological anthropology proposes an ontological construct of being which critically critiques human motivation and behaviour while also providing a social starting point for personal ethics.

Scott, Liesel. "The meaning of work : an ethical perspective." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/21439.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The central idea developed in this thesis is that meaningful work provides the normative standard of what work should be for all human beings, based on the normative idea that being human entails a realization of one’s potential and the expression of one’s intellect and creativity as a necessary part of living a full and flourishing life. Thus the key ethical foundation upon which my argument was built rests primarily upon classic Aristotelian ethical theory as well as more contemporary adaptations thereof. In reality, however, research reveals that up to eighty percent of people engage in work that is not meaningful in the sense that they are unable to experience both excellence and enjoyment through their work. This problem has been labeled as “employee disengagement” and has been acknowledged by organizations as a disturbingly growing trend particularly because of the financial cost it carries through lost productivity. My objective in this thesis was to outline the scope of the problem, and to make a strong case for the recognition of employee disengagement as a moral problem, and not simply as an economic one. Thus a major focus of this thesis was to unpack the concept of meaningful work and to argue for its moral value. Throughout my thesis, the importance of understanding meaningful work as a balance between both the subjective and objective elements that make work meaningful for the individual was emphasized. Having established employee disengagement as a moral problem, my attention then turned towards analyzing the potential causes of the problem at a systemic, organizational and individual level. My primary conclusion was that the modern paradigm facilitated a certain way of organizing business activity as well as a certain way of construing the relationship between work and life that has ultimately had a deep seated causal effect upon the absence of meaningful work. Thus addressing the problem entails a detachment from this paradigm and challenging some of the basic assumptions about organizational life. Finally, I proposed a business model that serves as a framework for a new way of working which has the capacity to be more fulfilling to the human spirit. This model assumes the tenets of virtue ethics as its core. In this model, individual employees, the organization as a community and leaders in the business all have specific roles and responsibilities to bring the model to life, and thus the quest for meaningful work has to be undertaken as a collaborative effort. The field of business ethics, with a refreshed Aristotelian mindset, has a lot of value to add in offering much needed ethical guidance to help steer this radical, yet exciting workplace transformation process in the right direction.

Abstract:
The concept of the covenant between the generations was proposed by Pope John Paul II in the document “Evangelium vitae” paragraph 94 as a means of expressing love and solidarity for the elderly in the family and in the community against the growing treat of marginalisation and the acceptance of euthanasia. The aim of the thesis is to affirm the love and responsibility of adults for their parents and the parental generation in the community and to provide for a renewal of the bonds of love and solidarity that begin in the family between the generations, especially for its weak and vulnerable members such as the young and the elderly. The research brings to light the rich theology of the covenant between the generations based upon Karol Wojtyla’s key philosophical and theological ideas. Wojtyla’s perspective of the human person is covenantal, one of being-in-relationship that is founded on love of God and love of neighbour which begins in the family. Finally, in the thesis this is contrasted with Peter Singer’s utilitarian ethics which is based upon independence, personal preference, the minimisation of suffering, exclusion and the acceptance of euthanasia. The concept of the covenant between the generations can lead to an understanding of intergenerational solidarity beginning in the family. It has implications for policy development in healthcare, pastoral care, and ethics for healthcare professionals. Also, the concept can contribute to the promotion of intergenerational solidarity in politics and government legislation, in order to protect the human person, especially the elderly as a subject of rights and the just allocation of healthcare resources. The love and solidarity between the generations that the concept of the covenant between the generations promotes ensures that every human being is the subject and object of love beginning in the family.

Nakielski, Christopher John. "A scholarly edition of Suita Maryjna, a Polish Marian suite for treble chorus, string quartet and two flutes, by Irena Pfeiffer." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6228.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the first published edition of Suita Maryjna (1987), a nine-movement Marian suite intended for three-part treble chorus, string quartet and two flutes composed by the Polish neoclassicist composer Irena Pfeiffer (1912-1986). The work was most likely intended for performance during Pope John Paul II’s pilgrimage to the Wawel Cathedral in Cracow, Poland in June 1987. It is structured according to a Marian prayer service known as the Jasna Góra Appeal, first prayed in the Jasna Góra Sanctuary in Częstochowa, Poland when the nation gained its sovereignty in 1918. The appeal was popularized by Pope John Paul II, who prayed it across Poland during his pilgrimages. Following the 1987 pilgrimage, Pfeiffer sent a manuscript of Suita Maryjna to the Lira Ensemble, a professional ensemble in Chicago specializing in Polish music, song and dance. Pfeiffer played an important role in the Lira by serving as a long-distance artistic advisor and by providing co-founder and current artistic advisor Lucyna Migala with modern Polish compositions for nearly twenty-five years. Suita Maryjna became a cornerstone of the ensemble’s repertory and was performed frequently, including in a studio recording in 1996. This edition of Suita Maryjna is placed in the context of Pfeiffer’s career, with particular attention to her working relationship with Pope John Paul II and the Lira Ensemble. Moreover, it discusses how Suita Maryjna reflects archaism, one of several strands of Polish neoclassicism in which diverse styles from earlier historical periods are fused.

This dissertation aims to examine the problem of suffering and the meaning of life in the contemporary world, starting from an analysis that contextualizes the understanding and the experience of suffering in the present society. We will study the book Homo Patiens, by the viennese psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl, and the Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris by Pope John Paul II, seeking a dialogue between faith and culture, through the common points in the authors thoughts. In the face of contemporary society s proposals to suppress suffering, which often results in an existential emptiness, contempt for the weakest and distancing from God, we will search for more adequate answers about the meaning of suffering, about the value of the human person and about the relation between God and the human suffering.

Abstract:
The subject of my thesis bears on the relations between the Church and the State in Poland from the monopole beginning of the Second World War until the breakdown of 1989. It is centered on the liberating words of John Paul II. One aspect of this destruction process of the communist dictatorship, introduced and imposed by the sovietic political power in Poland, has been the influence of the Church and in particular that of the Primate of Poland, Stefan Wyszyński and of the Archbishop of Cracovia, Karol Wojtyła. The latter's visits, once he became Pope, in 1979, 1983 and 1987, are set as a triple carrier of freedom ( on an individual scale), of relieving the burden of totalitarism ( on a social scale) and of the sovietic grip (on a national scale) Wojtyła, once he became John Paul II, operated thanks to a Word which produced a sensitiv effect and exerted a real, moral and intellectual, influence on the people. For this work, I examined the concept of «performative Word» ( that is to say a Word which has the strength to act by itself), used by Wojtyła, and of its impact on the individual, on society, on the nation at large

Abstract:
Church and State have the same field of action in common: the national and international setting. Their mission is to promote the common wellbeing of mankind, to give meaning to life and to create the proper environment for the fulfillment of human safety. However, politicians have always had the tendency to relieve themselves from the religious point of view, and to turn their back on the transcendental source which the religions safe keep. In fact, this separation of the religious and of the political creates complex and conflicting situations. The re enchantment of religion in secular democracies is the signature of complex but necessary relationships between the religious and the political. Thus, the boundary between worldly and spiritual matters remains hard to define; alliances and misalliances of the religious and the political greatly influence the security and peace problematic. So what contributions can the religion, in this instance the catholic Church, bring to the security and peace problematic?John Paul II pontificate initiated a world scale project in favor of the defense of human rights and dignity. His several trips during which the religious and political dimensions echo each others, his numerous encyclical letters, his homilies, his allocutions in front of representatives of international instances and his bold and daring opinions are characteristic of John Paul II exception in a world longing for peace and security. With him, the catholicity of the Church expressed itself daily and unveiled the specific character of its mission to serve humanity as well as of salvation through Jesus-Christ. By claiming human rights for all, the pope stresses a category of rights altogether the most universal and the most vilified in political systems, in this case Marxism. John-Paul II is credited of all-out interventionist political actions and of extremely diverse presence. Far from inferring a disorganized scattering, his mind is unified and centered around man as the central and foremost value and as the focal point of all his attentions

Abstract:
The role of Mary is often understood as an obstacle to reconciliation between Churches. Using this theme, the dissertation has as its objective the verification of the coherence of the contemporary ecumenical movement aswell as to how the results of the various dialogues correspond to the official teaching of the Churches. The starting point is a comparative study of John-Paul II’s Redemptoris Mater and Luther’s Commentary on theMagnificat. This comparison is then examined in the light of results from various ecumenical dialogues (between Lutherans and Catholics as well as Evangelicals, Pentecostals and Catholics…). Out of the dialogues come reciprocal questions concerning how Mary is understood in the mystery of the Church and of salvation. Marian theology shows itself to be a very fertile method of ecumenical verification, revealing both new consensuses and clarifying issues that remain open for ecumenical research, especially in relation to the instrumentality of the Church

Welter, Brian. "Reconstructing truth in modern society: John Paul II and the fallibility of Nietzsche." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2081.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the intellectual environment in which Pope John Paul II's thought operates, especially as it pertains to his writings on the truth. The pontiff's thinking faces open hostility toward Christianity, as exemplified by Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault. The pope's theology pays attention and builds links to modern thought through its positive engagement with phenomenology and personalism, as well as through its opposition to materialism. Despite these connections, this theology fails to fit well with (post)modern thinking, as it takes a wider view of things in two ways: (1) By offering a spiritual sense of things, it goes beyond thought and takes into account supernatural sources of knowledge, sources which are both a one-time event (the Resurrection of Jesus Christ) and part of the ongoing journey of the Christian community; (2) By boldly referring to traditional, outmoded language, as with the words obedience and humility, with the same level of reverence and fullness of their sense as they were used before the secular-feminist era condemned these virtues. The strange and unique qualities of John Paul II's thinking issues from these two practices. It also arises from his bold ability to engage with modern thought without becoming defensive and without hiding behind the Bible or Catholic piety, though he uses both of these generously. John Paul II offers a clear alternative to the chaos and confusion of post-Enlightenment thought, in both his thought's style and substance. The Holy Father's words cause us to reflect more deeply than those of modern or postmodern thinkers, and call us away from the relativism of Richard Rorty, Foucault, and so many others. The pope's thought succeeds in part because he takes a much wider vista of things, in that he digs more deeply into Western and Christian thought and that he enters this heritage as an inheritor rather than as a skeptical scientist-researcher as in Foucault's case. The pope's thought also succeeds because he assigns spiritual meaning to this journey of Christian and world people. In this sense, his thought is also radically inclusive.

Van, Tran Huong. "Pope Saint John Paul II on social justice in human work." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/22876.

Abstract:
In contemporary societies, the issues of industrialization and successive globalization have been affecting deeply the reality and true meaning of human work. The objective dimension of work became more important than the subjective. In contrast, Pope Saint John Paul II affirms that man is “the subject of work” and not merely an object. The human person “performs various actions belonging to the work process; independently of their objective content, these actions must all serve to realize his humanity” (LE. 6), which refers to the eminent subjective dimension of work rooted in the dignity of the worker as person. A lot of research and many interpretations of Pope Saint John Paul II’s innovative teaching in this regard have been proposed and discussed. This study presents how he responded to the signs of his time, by deepening and further developing theology of work that is fundamentally grounded in Scripture, Tradition, and the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church. He demonstrates in depth and extent in his teaching the relevance of social justice as a moral principle by fully respecting human dignity in work, for human beings as subject of work are fundamentally understood as being created in the image and likeness of God.

Lozano-Bielat, Hope Marie. "The transnational religious leader, regime change, and state sovereignty: the unlikely case comparison of Pope John Paul II and Abdullah Yusuf Azzam." Thesis, 2015. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/15666.

Abstract:
The role of religion in shaping geopolitics and its associated norms is often overlooked by international relations scholars. This influence can be examined through the lives of transnational religious leaders (TRLs), particularly those who contribute to new definitions of state sovereignty through their involvement in regime change. Two seemingly incomparable figures center in this paper's case studies- Pope John Paul II and Abdullah Yusuf Azzam. Pope John Paul, through the roles of pastor to a transnational community and head of an international organization, lent international legitimacy to the Solidarity movement, which contributed to the fall of Communism in Poland. Abdullah Yusuf Azzam authored the theological concept of "defensive jihad", led the transnational Afghan Arabs in armed resistance against Soviet invasion in Afghanistan during the Soviet Afghan war, and contributed to the creation of a global jihadist movement. Traditionally, Westphalian sovereignty claims that the territorial state holds ultimate authority over the affairs within its borders and that it is the primary actor in the international system. This dissertation examines how the characteristics of a TRL and the characteristics of the associated transnational social movement (TSM) qualify regime change as an indicator of challenges to conceptions of Westphalian sovereignty and modern state sovereignty. Characteristics of TRL include leadership style, hard versus soft power, relationship to secularization, and relationship to modernity. Characteristics of TSM include political theology, mobilizing structures, political opportunity structures, and nature of transnational activism. In both case studies, a transnational leader used soft power, based in a transnational religious identity and civil society, to contribute to a transnational social movement that helped alter the domestic authority structures in Poland and Afghanistan. As individual actors determining the actions of nation states, these TRLs ultimately challenged state sovereignty. Pope John Paul II's theological worldview was compatible with the Westphalian system, and he contributed to the birth of a stable, democratic Poland with sovereign authority within internationally respected borders. Azzam, however, envisioned an alternate world order based on religiously defined, pre-Westphalian boundaries. His theological and pragmatic contributions to the Afghan Arabs and the modern day jihadist movement further challenged the Westphalian system.

Abstract:
The thesis named: "The human dignity in the writings of Pope John-Paul II." tries to give a general overview of the theological-anthropological viewpoints of the teaching of the Pope John Paul II concerning the protection of the dignity of human being. The thesis begins by touching the life stages of the Polish priest, bishop and cardinal Karol Wojtyla and later the pontificate of the pope John Paul II. The thesis looks on particular events which had made an impact on his personality orienting his whole being to the protection of human rights and dignity of every human being. The second part of the thesis looks at particular theological- anthropological aspects and statements which make up the corner stones of John Paul II's teaching. The third part then goes on to focus on certain impulses given by the signs of the times and serious topics which lead the pope to raise his voice to call for protection of human rights and dignity of every single human being.

Abstract:
Prison is a reality that has always existed. Throughout time its level of conceptualization and finality has shifted. We always had prisoners. However, the way we true dignity. Prisons arised from the, oftentimes its convicted citizens ended up being forgotten. In the midst of this forgetfulness, mandment is not apart from history but committed with it and its protagonists, mankind. For this reason, prison became a theological place where God wishes to resurrect, as he did two thousand years ago. Although it is not always present in the heart of Christians, prison continues to be a place of mission. Even though the Popes have not forgotten the prisoners, history tells us that only in and gestures. Therefore, By means of the teachings of Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis (until the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy), without forgetting the prophetic signs of the Popes who preceded them, we shall try to sketch a penitentiary pastoral that tries to be ever more welcoming and constantly on the move. In this respect, we are interested in the fact that the ecclesial action may be rendered concrete within the specificity of each local reality. Therefore, we present some challenges to the prison pastoral care in Portugal, always auscultating Portuguese reality and Papal interpellations.

Abstract:
Most historians and political commentators agree that the Catholic Church was an important force in Communist Poland during the period of Martial Law between 1981 and 1983. However, they do not agree on the nature of its significance. Some have argued that the Church played the role of mediator between state authorities and society and thereby helped to stabilise the relationship between the two. Others have claimed that Polish Catholicism was itself a form of political opposition which helped to undermine the Communist regime. Despite its importance, relatively little has been written in English about the political role of the Polish Catholic Church under Martial Law. More has been written on this topic in Polish, but much of the Polish literature is hagiographical in nature. Therefore, this project explores various aspects of the political role of the Catholic Church and demonstrates that it was both a stabilising and a resistant force in Polish politics.

It focuses on the council idea, the definition of the council goals and setup time work before the council. It follows clarification of some organization issues during the council. It mentions its rule of procedure description. Another part of the theoretical part contains the development of all the council meetings and their results. There is also a list of council documents and evaluation of the Vatican Council II´s importance at the end of the theoretical part. The practical part of the MA thesis contains analysis of newspaper articles, namely from the Rudé právo and the Lidová demokracie dailies, covering the Vatican Council II. The monitored issues were: the space dedicated by the above dailies to the Council, the richness, content variety and balance of the coverage. The aim of the practical part and the MA thesis as a whole was the content analysis of the two 1960s daily newspapers and their reaction to the development and the result of the Council. Abstract:
This work seeks to make a reflection about Family on a sociological, theological and pastoral context, emphasizing what are the main incidences in each of the areas. Through a course by some contemporary Sociologists, allows to understand the way it is interpreted the concept of family outside the Christianism, and also in a biblical perspective, turning to some passages from the Old Testament and from the new Testament that refer to couple and family. In a second step, the course goes through the analysis of the preparatory documents of the church synods and the documents that resulted from them: Exhortation Familiaris Consortio and Amoris Laetitia, as well as their reception in the Church and in the society. In the third part, the text gives attention on familiar pastoral, giving focus to what it is in itself and what it implies, whether as preparation for marriage, whether after the realization of the sacrament, in the concrete experience, and as well, the challenges that are posed today to the family inserted in a plural and diversified society; and at last, we present some movements and groups that take care of the family's pastoral.

Abstract:
This work aims to study the messages addressed to young people by Pope John Paul II at the time of World Youth Day. The study is developed within the scope of a practical theology, having the World Youth Day instituted by the Pope as an object of study. Investigating core documents and fundamental issues on World Youth Day, it seeks to find out the relevance of the Pope's pastoral message for young people on that occasion, by confronting such documents and concepts with the contemporary youth profile. The World Youth Day was born in Rome in the pastoral year of 1984/1985, to foster and contribute to the evangelization of young people around the world. The World Youth Day was initially celebrated every three years in some great cities chosen by the Pope, being also celebrated as a diocesan journey at various dioceses on Palm Sunday. This event inspired thousands of young people and appears indeed as an important source for youth ministry, according to the theme chosen in a certain year. Therefore, these world journeys can surely mobilize inspiring ways to evangelize young people. The received message during the journeys reflects an important vision about the world, the human person and the Grace of God. Underlying the messages of Pope John Paul II is the central theme which is to promote the dignity of the human person. Pope addresses young people asking them and all for commitment to promote peace – when facing social divisions – to ground a civilization for love, and to defence values before the culture of death. This is a message drawing youth attention to higher spiritual values such as freedom, justice, love and responsibility.
