John Rutter, a world-famous British choral conductor and composer, was educated well in his childhood and the choral experience during that time has helped him to become an outstanding musician. After he was well-known, he not only established the Cambridge Singers and Collegium label, but also spared no pains to spread choral music such as being a guest-conductor or lecturer around the world. Three Birthday Madrigals was completed in 1997. It’s for two to four part female chorus and is a rearrangement from Birthday Madrigals, a choral suite including five pieces of music for mixed choir that was commissioned by Brian Kay to celebrate the seventy-fifth birthday of the great jazz pianist, George Shearing, in 1995. The texts of Three Birthday Madrigals all came from the eminent poet of Elizabethan Era of the late Renaissance Period; The first piece It was a lover and his lass came from William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the second piece My true love hath my heart is a sonnet, coming from Sir Philip Sidney’s Arcadia, and the third piece When daisies pied combined William Shakespeare’s Love''s Labour''s Lost with George Peele’s The Old Wives’ Tale. Rutter used two distinguished styles in Three Birthday Madrigals. He applied the jazz style to describe the delightful feeling of the first piece and the relaxing and pleasing feeling of the third piece. He utilized the English Partsong tradition when expressing the touching and profound love of the second piece. The most noticeable feature of the first piece is the dotted rhythm. Rutter indicated that the dotted eighth and sixteenth notes should be performed with a two-to-one ratio to interpret the swing style. The piano accompaniment sentence is extremely important, and improvisation-like manner will determine the jazz flavor firmly. The second piece preserves the unique aesthetic quality of pure human voices by having the singing a cappella. The first soprano part carries the melody most of time with the other voices supplying the harmonies. The third piece is a jazz waltz. It is similar with the first piece; the piano accompaniment plays an important role in creating atmosphere jazz and in enriching the musical color. Rutter applied smooth line against syncopation and clothed each section with legato and staccato simultaneously to make contrast. Therefore, when interpreting this piece, the choir should express the contrast clearly to make the music lively and attractive. This master report consists of seven parts: the preface, a biographic sketch of John Rutter, Rutter’s compositional genres, Rutter’s choral music, a biographic sketch of three poets, analysis and interpretation of Three Birthday Madrigals, and the conclusion. There are two appendices at the end of this paper. Appendix A supplies two e-mail letters from Rutter. Appendix B is a list of Rutter’s published secular choral music.

Music in pseudo-classic style has always been written by composers in various ways. For example, composers use the forms, structures, rhythms and writing techniques of music to show the style and spirit of classic music. “Suite Antique” is written by John Rutter (b. 1945) in 1979 for Cookham Festival. He wrote this pseudo-classic suite to show his respect to J. S. Bach (1685-1750). In addition to using the same combination of instruments as J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, i.e. flute, harpsichord and strings, Rutter included the forms of music and writing techniques from the Romantic Period and the modern days. This pseudo-classic music piece combines modern music and classic music. In comparison to other pseudo-classic music pieces, “Suite Antique” presents the spirit of classic music while tending not to be one of the stereotypes. It shows strong Rutter characteristic and is an important division for follow-up pieces that cover classic and modern music. There are six movements in Suite Antique. The slow melodious prelude introduces the suite. The second movement uses Ostinato to replace the music movement in Baroque fugue and Italian style. The third movement is an Aria with slight sadness of a minor performed in counterpoint and is as beautiful as church hymns. The fourth movement is lively Waltz with Jazz and technical fireworks which refreshes the audiences’ feelings. The fifth movement, Chanson, is like a Christmas song for which the beautiful melody is like an anthem. For the last movement, Rondeau, the irregular melody is like a war between numbers and the exciting feeling continues until the end. Rutter revised the suite into flute solo with a piano accompaniment later. Thus, there are two styles to this suite and each has its own special features. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. The second chapter is the brief background of John Rutter. In the third chapter, Rutter’s music is analyzed and the passing-on and innovation of classic and modern music styles are discussed. The fourth chapter is the performance interpretation. The last chapter is the conclusion of the research.

John Rutter (1945-) is a British composer, conductor, and founder of Collegium Records label. His work covers a wide range of genres, among which includes over 600 music pieces and over 40 records. He is an honorary Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians, a receiver of a Lambeth Doctorate of Music conferred by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and an awardee of CBE. Up to date, he is still a prominent artist in the international music society. Suite Antique is composed by Rutter for Cookham Festival in 1979, as a tribute to J.S. Bach’s music style and form. This suite has the similar instrumention as Brandenburg Concertos No. 5, which include flute, harpsichord and string orchestra. This suite comprises six movements. The first movement “Prelude” is quiet and sweet, followed by a lighter and brisk “Ostinato”. The following “Aria” is described as being cantabile, whereas the fourth movement “Waltz” is jazzy. The fifth movement “Chanson" has a cantabile melodic theme, followed by the final “Rondeau”, which according to Rutter himself, is a continuous and progressive rhythm and represents his style the most. This thesis will focus on the version Rutter rearranged for flute and piano in 1981. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The introduction opens with the motivation and goal of study this suite, as well as the methodology, steps and the literature reviews. Moving on, the paper describes the artist’s life and style of work. Chapter three explains the background of the suite, analysis of the music and comparison of the origins of music. Following that is the discussion of the interpretation of the suite, which leads to the final conclusion in chapter five. This thesis aims to help the public to understand the aesthetics of music composition and benefit flute musicians and students.
