Abstract:
The paper considers two basic philological/historical issues. The first deals with the most important preserved Greek sources describing the preparation of the conspiracy against Nikephoros II Phokas and his murder (Leo the Deacon, Michael Psellos, John Skylitzes and John Zonaras). It examines their reliance on the lost sources known as version "A" and "B" of the biography of Nikephoros II Phokas, and refers in particular to the Short History by Michael Psellos. The second issue involves the relations between John Tzimiskes and Nikephoros II Phokas in the period from 965 (Tzimiskes' demobilisation?) until the murder of Nikephoros Phokas, in December 969, a time that was poorly documented in the said sources.

Abstract:
One can say without hesitation that during the highly dynamic medieval epoch rivalries and military clashes were of paramount importance in the struggles for dominance over the Balkan Peninsula. During the entire period, war-time activities included the capturing of those who had the misfortune to fall into the hands of the enemy. Various groups of soldiers and civilians alike have repeatedly tested the bitterness of captivity. Attempts to trace the fate of war-captives are, for understandable reasons, directly dependent on the data in the written records. The comparison of the various historical accounts is rather typical, even if the records deal with events that are different in time, place and participants. The present paper also compares two descriptions. This study encompasses two well-known historical accounts: the first one is from the chronicle (Synopsis historiarum) of John Skylitzes, while the second one is excerpted from Kritoboulos’ History of Mehmed the Conqueror. Despite all distinctions, there are some particular similarities. Both fragments concern the division of the spoils of war and the fate of the captured population and provide additional knowledge of the practices relating to prisoners of war in the Balkan medieval past.

Abstract:
Abstract In this article, I discuss humiliation parades as described by eleventh-century Byzantine historians, focusing on the role of mules and donkeys in them. More specifically, I examine how the presence of these equids could change the meaning of a scene in the works of Michael Attaleiates, John Skylitzes, and Michael Psellos. I argue that, as the social and religious connotations of mules and donkeys interacted with the social and religious status of their riders, humiliation could turn to humility and emasculation to masculinity, transforming the animals themselves into carriers of political rhetoric. When reading these scenes we need to consider whether our rider is a man or a woman, a cleric or a layman, a general or scholar, but also what kind of equid they are riding and how that might be juxtaposed with other animals in the text. In addition to emphasizing the role of animals in Byzantine political life, I consider the animals’ own experience of these parades, attempting to reconstruct something of their sense of the world with the help of modern veterinary science.

В XII в. образ воина-интеллектуала получит широкое распространение, и станет близок к образам куртуазной рыцарской литературы. Помимо этого, в диссертации изучены сущность, значение и общественное восприятие триумфа, а также особенности византийской победной риторики.
