AbstractIn 1927, George Paget Thomson, professor at the University of Aberdeen, obtained photographs that he interpreted as evidence for electron diffraction. These photographs were in total agreement with de Broglie's principle of wave–particle duality, a basic tenet of the new quantum wave mechanics. His experiments were an initially unforeseen spin-off from a project he had started in Cambridge with his father, Joseph John Thomson, on the study of positive rays. In his Sir John Rhŷs Memorial Lecture of 1969 Robert L. Thomson provided a detailed analysis of initial consonant replacement in the Classical Manx of the eighteenth century, in which he was able to set out the use or non-use of such replacement by various authors of that century. However, Thomson's presentation of the material is not easy to digest today, and in order to facilitate an easier understanding of the importance of these developments, the material has here been repackaged and presented anew.

Close reading of reviews and of an array of archival sources suggests that Cage's personal and professional relationships with composer-critics ensured that the reception of his music was uniquely well informed, and that his

Recent work by medical historians has demonstrated how John Thomson and his sons wrote their biography of William Cullen in the light of nineteenth-century medical concerns, though that biography remained silent on Cullen's personal life. In spite of his distinction and his substantial income from books, teaching, and consultations, Cullen died virtually bankrupt, leaving his daughters without financial support. The point of Judith Jarvis Thomson's violinist example is to establish that one person, A, can acquire a right to use the body of another person, B, if and only if B performs some kind of affirmative act that gives A such a right. On her view, the reason it is permissible for you to unplug yourself from the violinist is that you did nothing to give the violinist a right to use your body: the violinist was plugged into you without your consent. Thus it follows that the mere fact that A needs use of B's body to survive is not enough to give rise to a right in A to use B's body. Accordingly, Thom
