Abstract:

The analysis of computer music presents new challenges to the field of music theory. This study examines the fixed media composition Phoné by John Chowning from its aesthetic perspective, compositional theory and computer sound synthesis techniques. Fast Fourier Transform analyses are used to create spectrograms. The findings from the spectrograms are juxtaposed with compositional philosophies of John Chowning, Jean-Claude Risset, Pierre Schaeffer and Arnold Schoenberg and the techniques are represented via PureData patches.

John Locke (1632-1704) is an important philosopher of Modern Age. His most important researches focus on the epistemology, theology, ethics and political philosophy. Among the themes investigated by Locke, it is present the problem of religious tolerance, on which the philosopher devoted more than four decades, between 1660 and 1704. During this period, we can characterize at least two different positions adopted by Locke on the relationship between the political and religious fields. The first position corresponds to the earliest writings about the Lockean tolerance: Two Tracts on Government (1660-62). In this period, Locke defends that the civil magistrate is entitled to impose laws on some religious aspects, that is, about the indifferent things". The strongest allegation of the philosopher is that only through religious uniformity in terms of "indifferent things", is that the magistrate could ensure order within the civil community, preventing the peace from been disturbed by religious disputes. The second Lockean position corresponds mainly to Epistola de tolerantia (1689). In this time, Locke changes his argument and begins to defend religious tolerance, basing exactly on the separation of the State and Church and setting different functions for each of these institutions, as well as their own powers to perform their proper functions. The objective of this study is to investigate the different concepts of tolerance in the three works presented above. We will defend two hypotheses about the Lockean tolerance. 1. First, we will support that, despite of the change in Locke's position on the relationship between the State and Church, the philosopher remains an element unchanged over his writings on tolerance, namely, his "theological conception", and we will claim that this "theological conception" is essential to understand the Lockean concept of tolerance. 2. We will defend that the concept of tolerance presented in Epistola of 1689 can elucidate the political and religious problems encountered in the context of the Protestant Reform and religious wars occurred in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
John Locke (1632-1704) é um importante filósofo da Época Moderna. As suas investigações mais relevantes giram em torno da epistemologia, da teologia, da ética e da filosofia política. Dentre os temas mais examinados por Locke, encontra-se o problema da tolerância religiosa, sobre o qual o filósofo se dedicou por mais de quatro décadas, entre 1660 e 1704. Ao longo desse período, podemos caracterizar pelo menos duas posições distintas adotadas por Locke sobre a relação entre o campo político e o campo religioso. A primeira posição corresponde aos primeiros escritos lockeanos a respeito da tolerância: Two tracts on Government (1660-62). Neste período, Locke defende que o magistrado civil tem legitimidade para impor leis sobre alguns aspectos da religião, isto é, sobre as coisas indiferentes . A alegação mais forte do filósofo é a de que, somente através da uniformidade religiosa no que tange às coisas indiferentes , é que o magistrado poderia assegurar a ordem no seio da comunidade civil, impedindo que a paz fosse perturbada por disputas religiosas. Já a segunda posição lockeana corresponde principalmente a Epistola de tolerantia (1689). Neste período, Locke muda a sua argumentação e passa a defender a tolerância religiosa partindo exatamente da separação entre Estado e Igreja e estabelecendo funções diferentes para cada uma dessas instituições, assim como poderes próprios para a realização de suas devidas funções. O objetivo do presente trabalho é investigar as diferentes concepções de tolerância apresentada nas três obras acima. Defenderemos duas hipóteses sobre a tolerância lockeana. 1. Primeiramente, argumentaremos que, apesar da mudança na posição de Locke sobre a relação entre Estado e igreja, o filósofo mantém um elemento inalterável ao longo dos seus escritos sobre a tolerância, a saber, a sua concepção teológica ; e sustentaremos que essa concepção teológica é essencial para a compreensão do conceito lockeano de tolerância. 2. Defenderemos ainda que a concepção de tolerância apresentada na Carta de 1689 consegue elucidar os problemas político-religiosos nascidos no contexto da Reforma Protestante e das guerras religiosas ocorridas na Europa, durante os séculos XVI e XVII.

Abstract:

A multi-proxy approach is utilized on mm- to cm-scale laminated sediment records in coastal salt ponds on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands to characterize the sediments, identify their sources and depositional processes/events (heavy rainfall, tropical cyclones, tsunamis). Historical records are combined with high-resolution geochronology (short-lived radioisotopes, 210Pb, 137Cs, 7Be) and scanning elemental techniques (XRF and LA-ICP-MS) to link depositional events to how they are manifested in the sedimentary record. Volcanic rocks are the terrigenous sediment source and the sedimentary signature of terrigenous sediment in the geologic record consists of higher amounts of Al, Fe, Ti, Co, and Si, and is associated with terrigenous runoff due to rainfall events. A minimum threshold value of >2.0 mm per day (minimum to erode and transport terrigenous sediment downslope) of rainfall has been determined for the study area. The frequency of heavy rainfall events that exceed the threshold of >2.0 mm per day is significantly correlated to the amount of terrigenous sediment accumulation of the terrigenous indictor element Al measured by scanning LA-ICP-MS. There is a robust sedimentary record of terrigenous sediment runoff that is a function of the frequency of heavy rainfall events (exceed threshold). Variability in the sedimentary record reflects changes between periods of "wet" increased frequency of heavy rainfall events and "dry" decreased frequency of heavy rainfall events. Tropical cyclones and tsunamis can cause marine overwash into salt ponds leading to deposition of marine sediments. Elemental scans for Ca and Sr and overwash indicator elements are complicated by grain size effects of LA-ICP-MS techniques, as well the difficulty in differentiating between tropical cyclone overwash deposits and tsunami deposits. By defining the sedimentary signature for depositional events , geologic records can be interpreted to provide insight into the natural variability of these processes throughout geologic time for comparisons to the more recent anthropogenic time period. This study provides a framework that can be applied to other coastal environments on high-relief tropical islands, to compare local records, and provide information on regional processes controlling rainfall variability in tropical latitudes.

Abstract:

The study of early cross-linguistic diplomatic epistolography was first introduced in Brownlees' (2012) comparative study of Italian and English personal newsletters. Given the field’s young age and the strong need for both further research and the retrieving of new, untranscribed and unanalysed data, the present study set out to help move this field forward by examining, at both a textual superstructure and semantic macrostructural level, two sets of unchartered diplomatic newsletters which representatives at foreign courts despatched back to their respective home countries. The first set of original manuscripts comprises periodical newsletters which Baron Christer Bonde, the Swedish ambassador-extraordinary to England, wrote to Charles X, King of Sweden, between 1655-6, whereas the second set consists of letters sent in 1680 by John Robinson, England’s chargé d’affaires in Sweden, to Sir Leoline Jenkins, Secretary of State for the Northern Department of England. The analysis has shown that whereas the textual superstructures of the two diplomats’ correspondences remain similarly robust, the instantiating semantic macrostructures display not only stylistic and compositional, but also narrative, variation.

Abstract:

Hero characters and their narratives serve as important sites for negotiating a culture’s values. Informed by sexism in Western cultures, female heroes often construct and perpetuate women’s statuses as second-class citizens. However, female heroes also can and sometimes do work against such representations. This thesis argues for a third wave feminist interpretation of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men comic books as a text that brings multiple feminist perspectives into conversation with each other and that opposes certain patriarchal systems. Through narrative and formal analysis, I explore female X-Men Emma Frost and Kitty Pryde as characters who reject gender essentialism and misogynist value systems and whose relationship addresses concepts of difference in third wave feminism. Using similar methods, I also explore an interpretation of villain Danger as a failure to integrate radical feminist ideologies into third wave feminism. I believe that Astonishing X-Men provides an example of how norms of the mainstream superhero comic book medium, which scholars have criticized as sexist, can be reworked for a new generation of feminists.

Abstract:

Military victories of the Byzantine army of the second half X – the beginning of XI c. created to image of military commanders who were motivated by the ancient military tradition and society underlined of the hopes and expectations. They have influenced to the formation of images of military commanders in the Byzantine commonwealth and become part of the imperial idea. In the master's study is investigated to the main types of military commanders in the historical works - ideal Roman commander, the holy Christian defender and a new type of Byzantine warrior, protector of his family, a warrior-intellectual. The last type of military commanders will receive in the future the most widespread and will be, finally, very close to the courtly chivalric culture. This thesis is devoted to the nature, value and, most importantly, the perception of triumph and victorious rhetoric.
Диссертация посвящена исследованию образов военачальников в византийской исторической литературе. Победы императорской армии во второй половине X – начале XI в. нашли значительное отражение в византийской литературе. Созданные в исторических сочинениях этого времени образы полководцев являлись продолжением античной традиции. Автором исследованы основные литературные типы полководцев: римский идеал военачальника; святой воин, защитник христиан; воин, защитник своей семьи; воин-интеллектуал. В XII в. образ воина-интеллектуала получит широкое распространение, и станет близок к образам куртуазной рыцарской литературы. Помимо этого, в диссертации изучены сущность, значение и общественное восприятие триумфа, а также особенности византийской победной риторики.

Abstract:

What is the real meaning of life and death; the absence and presence of Jesus at Bethany? These fundamental biblical questions, which constitute the theological concern ofthe Lazarus story, not only tortured the Johannine Community, the Community of Eternal Life but they still challenge each believer who goes through the same experience today. Could sickness, suffering and death be a way of glory and life? The present study is concerned with these very harsh issues through a contextual exegesis of John 11:1-44 based on the Tri-Polar Exegetical model of Draper, Grenholm and Patte. Considering the disastrous consequences caused by sickness and death, divisions, distress, fear, weakness of faith, especially in the context of crisis of values in Congo-Brazzaville, this work stands as a help. The study would like to be an appeal, a challenge for each believer in order to overcome and make the reality of death part of his/her life, as well as the fear this phenomenon generates. In other words, the findings of the exegesis of the Lazarus story challenge each C-hristian in Congo-Brazzaville to a true meta-noia which allows one to give a human response of high quality to God's initiative, God's presence and action which are revealed in "the signs of the times." In this process, the Church could help believers by referring to African values as a precious treasure of African wisdom and proverbs as dynamic elements of the language capable to strengthen faith and hope, thanks to their rhetorical dimension.

Abstract:

Teen films from the 1980s are a part of the zeitgeist, but there is very little we actually understand about how they can be qualified and defined, and about the phenomenon of their prolific production, box office success, and cultural relevance. Gaining greater insights about these issues is essential for recognizing the significance of a specific group of films and the ways they address concerns of how teens come of age, but is also important for learning about the films’ historical and industrial contexts of production. Asking the questions why these kinds of films, why at this time, and what do they mean, leads to an awareness and identification of the phenomenon, but additionally, these lines of inquiry explore how the films and their success are tied to changing Hollywood industrial conditions, and to the shifting political, economic, social, and cultural climate of the U.S. in the 1980s. While previous scholars have studied the industrial context of production of teen films in the 1950s, and some have looked at the different types of films produced in the 1980s, the matter remains as to whether teen films actually constitute their own genre. Examining this question of genre is necessary for clarifying a number of issues: how the films relate to the culture at large; how representations of youth on screen can help us understand and reevaluate Generation X, the demographic group coming of age at the time; and how an assessment of these films contributes to a re-conceptualization of the ways films are produced, marketed, and categorized in the New Hollywood. Using primary data consisting of textual analysis and contextual analysis, and applying both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study builds on and adds to previous approaches to genre. The contributions of this research are multifaceted. By gaining insights about these films, we can begin to appreciate more fully a maligned generation, the changing landscape of the entertainment industry, and a cultural phenomenon.

The focus of this practical theological study is Pentecostalism, and the relationship between the hermeneutics of Pentecostalism and Postmodernism. Through a literary search, we observe the points of congruency between the hermeneutics of early Pentecostals and the key tenets of Postmodernism. We note the unprecedented acceptance of Pentecostal scholars into the larger theological world and question whether this is a result of the increased Modernization of Pentecostal hermeneutics. The Postmodern world of youth is explored, and we observe their tremendous openness to spirituality. This thesis will show that Pentecostals may contribute to the Christian world a Pentecostal hermeneutic that will speak a relevant message to generations of youth. Chapters two and three examine the convergent viewpoints of Pentecostalism with Postmodernity, in terms of rationalism, narratives, and the place of experience in life and theology. Chapter four highlights the hermeneutical debate between Gordon D. Fee and his Pentecostal responders, noting the Modern approach in the principles debated. Chapter five seeks to provide interaction with a giant of theology seldom engaged by Pentecostals - Rudolf Bultmann - and his modern followers, and explores the world of Postmodern youth. Chapter six explores the work of Kenneth Archer, who has proposed a specific Pentecostal hermeneutical approach, and chapter seven discusses the role of the Holy Spirit in hermeneutics, including whether Pentecostal experience may be considered an ”edge” in hermeneutics. Chapter eight summarizes the findings of this study.
