Abstract:
Abstract A bolted flange joint assembly is a complex mechanical device, according to ASME PCC-1. A complex mechanical device’s reliability depends on many activities being performed prior and during the assembly of the bolted flange joint assembly (BFJA) being assembled. Some of these activities being; required torque calculations; gasket material selection, fastener selection, type of flange, fastener condition, lubrication, and maybe the most important activity being the assembly of the bolted flange joint. How does one ensure the correct methods and best practices being used during the asse

Abstract:
This guideline is intended to provide a practical review of installation and maintenance practices for bolted joints that will minimize the likelihood of leakage or joint failure. The guideline addresses topics such as preload selection, installation tools, lubrication, gaskets, assembly procedures, preload verification tools, maintenance procedures, and vibration loosening. The guideline is designed to provide engineers and technicians with the knowledge necessary for successful assembly and maintenance of bolted joints. Use with caution. Abstract:
Expeditionary airfield matting systems are lightweight, portable surfaces that enable the rapid deployment of infrastructure to support aircraft operations. Individual matting components are assembled via interlocking joints to construct arrays that serve as temporary aircraft operating surfaces. The paper outlines the homogenization of the AM2 portable airfield matting system and its interlocking mechanisms to permit computationally efficient analyses toward understanding mechanisms that influence the global behavior of these arrays and underlying subgrade during aircraft maneuvers.
