The applicability of flowdrill technology to join steel and aluminum alloys is studied. When used to flowdrill two overlapped thin-walled materials, a joint is formed as a secondary effect. The quality of the resulting bushings forming the interference fit joint was investigated by metallography. The joints were formed using a combination of uncoated deep drawn steel, galvanized high-strength low alloy steel and aluminum alloy, in different positions in the joint. Subsequently, tensile shear testing of single joints was performed. The load-carrying capacity of the joints was also tested in com

Abstract:
Composite beam-to-column joints in buildings are mostly modelled as pinned joints in order to facilitate the design of the structure. In reality, due to the required reinforcement in the concrete slab, a certain joint rigidity and bending resistance is always available. The real joint behaviour corresponds therefore more to that of a semi-continuous joint. This is not only beneficial for the serviceability limit state but can also be advantageous at ultimate limit state. However, due to the lack of analytical design rules in EN 1994 to verify the rotation capacity of semi-continuous joints, th

Abstract:
Demonstrating the reliability of existing pipelines under new loading conditions requires the use of standard methods that have known applicability to that type of pipe and data relevant to the pipe. Both of these may be lacking for early generation pipelines, such as ones from the 1930s and 1940s, where the girth welds can have been welded with processes not commonly used today (oxyacetylene welding) or with joint designs that use internal backing. Three types of joint designs were particularly used in this study: butt joints with an internal backing ring, butt joints with a backing or chi

Abstract:
If designed and implemented well, public-private partnership (PPP) projects can fill the gaps in the public provision of infrastructure facilities and social services at the subnational level. The more than three decades of implementing subnational PPPs in the Philippines have highlighted many challenges, partly due to capacity gaps at the subnational level and fragmentation in previous legal frameworks. This fragmentation was characterized by varying and inconsistent local legislative council ordinances on PPPs and joint ventures for local government units, as well as nationally designed join

Full text
Abstract:
This study summarizes the assessment of the impact of fiscal policies on equity in the Andean countries. It evaluates the outcome of the main taxes and social public expenditures on income distribution applying a homogeneous methodology. The full effect of taxes is slightly regressive due to a weak personal income tax collection. The accumulated public social expenditure has a much higher redistributive impact. It improves the Gini coefficient by 5 percentage points, however, close to half the effect of developed economies (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development - OECD). Conside

Repair of damaged continuity joints using ultra-high performance, fiber reinforced self-consolidating, and magnesium–aluminum–liquid–phosphate concretes. Bridge elements known to develop damage over time are individual continuity joints connecting girders. Replacing damaged joints is an expensive and invasive process and a need exists to design a less invasive repair method. This study focused on evaluating an encapsulation repair method for continuity joints that would not require extensive demolition of the bridge deck to implement and could potentially be constructed without bridge closure. Approximately half scale connected bridge girder specimens were constructed and purposely damaged to create similar crack patterns to those seen in bridg

Abstract:
A review of the East African Community (EAC) joint regulatory review process was conducted, registration timelines analyzed and key milestones, challenges and opportunities documented for the period of July 2015 to January 2020. A total of 113 applications were submitted for joint scientific review. Among these, 109 applications were assessed, 57 were recommended for marketing authorisation, 52 applications had queries to applicants and four applications were under review. A total median approval time for all products ranged from 53 to 102 days. The maximum time taken by a regulator to review

Abstract:
This study is an unprecedented effort in Brazil to evaluate the effectiveness of public incentive programs to develop technological capacity of firms. There are currently no empirical evaluations that have explored the impacts of this type of program on the performance of the Brazilian industrial firms in greater depth, particularly for those beneficiaries of these programs. This study therefore evaluates the FNDCT's impact, particularly its cooperative modality, which comprises a joint university-enterprise project for technological innovation. The results indicate that the FNDCT has positive

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is the most unequal region in the world (ECLAC, 2022). This condition, added to the limited capacity of states to respond to conditions such as poverty, insecurity, unemployment and lack of adequate housing, has led many people to build their own homes as a direct solution to have a roof. The popular neighbourhoods that emerge as a result of the social production of habitat are not only the physical-spatial expression of a joint project for households, but also social and cultural expressions of collective life that are expressed in the territory with the

In February 2021, a group from MASTS, Environmental Interactions of Marine Renewables (EIMR) and Marine Scotland began exploring options for a joint event on marine energy science and policy development. The original concept was to bridge the gap between events that each group would normally arrange ‘in person’ and the virtual world in which we were all currently existing. Encouraged by the online support and experience available from MASTS, a steering group decided to arrange a workshop. Abstract:
The creation of an intelligent supply chain is now an urgent national security priority that cannot be achieved without the joint mobilization of various stakeholders in Canada. It is not, however, an end in itself: the achievement of a single, competitive, sustainable, and consumer-focused domestic market should be the ultimate outcome of the national taskforce needed to collaboratively implement the recommendations of three complementary public policy reports published in 2022 on the state of the supply chain in Canada. The supply chain challenge is vast, and it will only become more complex
