SummaryThe final part of the account of this expedition describes experience and assessments of shelters, clothing, methods of travel, etc. Although the team lived throughout the winter in tents, a cardboard hut proved invaluable and easy to transport by air. The most robust design of tent was the Antarctic Pyramid, but this was not portable and proved cold in its lower regions. Lightweight dome tents were used for travelling, but needed protection from winds greater than 60 knots. Many different garments were taken. Although most were worn continuously for periods of three to nine months with

SummaryThis second article covers aspects of the physiological research carried out during the JSE to Brabant Island, Antarctica. The major task in this was to investigate fluid balance in the 12 subjects whilst they lived in harsh field conditions through the Austral winter, to see if any acclimatisation occurred. The practical relevance of this to the prevention of cold injury, which is highly likely in those dehydrated by the climate, is discussed. Practical matters to enable such research to be carried out are described, and some of the findings tentatively presented. In particular, it wou

SummaryThis, the first in a series of three, describes the medical aspects of the JSE to Brabant Island, Antarctica. The expedition was conceived and led by Commander Chris Furse RN, was logistically light and simple, and used tents instead of huts for accommodation. Main achievements included a 140 mile journey in 5m inflatable boats, the first ascents of 55 peaks, the first complete overwintering in tents, and the 100 mile circumnavigation of the island by canoe. Apart from the well-publicised crevasse fall in which Lieutenant Commander Clive Waghorn RN fractured his femur, medical problems

AbstractDuring the 1981–82 austral summer a Joint Services Expedition to South Georgia recorded meteorological observations at Royal Bay, near to the site of the German station of the First International Polar Year in 1882–83. Comparisons between the two sets of observations emphasize the storminess of the climate and indicate slightly higher temperatures in 1981–82. Weather conditions at Royal Bay in 1981–82 were more comparable to those at King Edward Point (Grytviken), the main meteorological station on the island, than in the central mountains of the Salvesen Range.
