Bietti, Lucas M., and Michael J. Baker. Multimodal Processes of Joint Remembering in Complex Collaborative Activities. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198737865.003.0010.

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to expand research on joint remembering into real-world complex collaborative activities at the workplace. The text illustrates how the interweaving of verbal, corporal, social, and material resources supports joint remembering of relevant aspects of work projects during group interactions. As joint remembering does not represent a ubiquitous joint action in complex collaborative activities in the workplace, but rather a localized and goal-oriented interactional mechanism, here we focus on those interactional sequences concerning past actions and events, in relation to work projects, that are triggered by questions acting as reminders. Such sequences are called “multimodal remembering sequences.” The group interactions that are presented as illustrative examples to support our theoretical standpoint were taken from a corpus collected on the basis of two naturalistic studies on joint remembering collaborative design conducted with architects and animation designers at their workplaces.

Ludwig, Kirk. Plural Agency. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198789994.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 2 reviews the multiple agents analysis of plural action and the account of shared intention and we-intentions of participants in joint intentional action developed in From Individual to Plural Agency (OUP 2016). It shows how to project the event analysis of individual action sentences to plural action sentences in light of their ambiguity between a plural and collective reading so as to show that only individual agents are involved. For a group of people to do something is for each of them to contribute to bringing something about. Shared intention, on the account, is a matter of each member of a group having a we-intention directed at the group bringing something about in accordance with a shared plan. The chapter reviews what joint intentional action comes to give this account of shared intention. Finally, it reviews the nature of conditional intentions, which play a role in the account of conventions and status functions.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 sets out the problem of institutional agency, explains the project and its methodology, describes the structure of the book, and gives advice to readers on navigating through it. The central problem of institutional action is to understand how the structure of institutions is grounded in more primitive forms of joint intentional action, and how those more primitive forms of joint intentional action are expressed through those institutional structures. The project aims to uncover the conceptual structure of institutional agency, taking as examples familiar institutions. It starts with the question of the logical form of grammatically singular group action sentences, that is, action sentences about mobs and organizations and institutions, and then provides reductive analyses of key notions in understanding institutional action in particular, namely, constitutive rules, status functions and roles, institutional membership, and proxy agency.

Turid, Stemre. 10 The IMO, the Polar Regions, and Global Ocean Governance: Newly Accessible Maritime Environments. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198823957.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the content of the recently adopted Polar Code and outlines the methodology used in the working group of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) that led to the Code being developed and adopted. In doing so, the chapter provides invaluable insight into the workings of International Maritime Organization (IMO) committees. In addition, the chapter maintains that, in the absence of political will to do so, the intended results of this lengthy negotiation at IMO will not be achieved. An additional area this chapter identifies for further action concerns the International Life-saving Appliance (LSA) Code and the International Code for the Application of Fire Test Procedures (FTP). This area urgently needs revision in order to take into account the new requirements of the Polar Code regarding procedures and performance standards.

Mark, Brealey QC, and George Kyla, eds. Competition Litigation. 2nd ed. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law-ocl/9780199665075.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book provides a comprehensive guide to all aspects of competition litigation in the UK. It covers both practice and procedure in the UK courts as well as in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. All aspects of case work are covered, from commencement of proceedings, group litigation, jurisdiction, applicable law, evidence, remedies, costs, and arbitration to criminal proceedings, giving competition lawyers a full analysis of the litigation process. There are also new chapters dedicated to the practice and procedure in Scotland and Northern Ireland.Fully updated in its second edition, coverage reflects important amendments to the Competition Act 1998; for example, the introduction of rules for class actions in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. As a result of the implementation of the Damages Directive, Directive 2014/204, new rules have been introduced for disclosure and joint and several liability. The book also covers the new cartel offence, which no longer has the mens rea of dishonesty. The new edition covers a range of important new cases: to name but a few, Sainsbury’s v MasterCard on the pass-on defence; Dorothy Gibson and Walter Merricks on opt-out class action; Cooper Tire and Toshiba Carrier on anchor defendants; and Deutsche Bahn on applicable law.

Abstract:
Early ideas about optimization principles were brought in by an eclectic group of extraordinary thinkers: the Ancients (Hero, and Princess Dido), Fermat with his Principle of Least Time, the Bernoullis, Leibniz, Maupertuis, Euler, and d’Alembert. Also, Stevin was the first to invoke the impossibility of perpetual motion in a proof, and Huygens was the first to put Galilean Relativity to a quantitative test. The Swiss family of mathematical geniuses, the Bernoullis, tackled isoperimetric problems, such as the brachystochrone, and Johann Bernoulli discovered the Principle of Virtual Velocities. The flavour of the eighteenth century is shown in the evocative tale of the König affair, and the correspondence between Daniel Bernoulli and Euler. It is shown how symmetry arguments, leading ultimately to an energy-analysis, were competing with Newton’s force-analysis. The Principle of Least Action and Variational Mechanics, proper, were developed by Lagrange, Hamilton, and Jacobi.
