Illinois Beach State Park (IBSP) represents the last contiguous 6.5 mile pristine shoreline within the State of Illinois. Geologically speaking, the park sits atop a migratory beach-ridge characterized by sand ridges separated by low wetland swales which are home to over 650 species, some of which are rare and threatened. The land itself provides a visual history of the layering of the primary frontal dune marching lakeward as the beach-ridge migrated south. Human development, however, has stabilized the beach ridge to the north, cutting off sand supply to the park. The very coastal process th

Illinois Beach State Park is the only stretch of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline in the State of Illinois. The park is approximately six miles long and contains unique habitat features including a well-formed beach-ridge plain coastal landform and freshwater wetlands called pannes. The shoreline was eroding at an alarming rate through the highwater cycle of Lake Michigan in 2019 and 2020, threatening to destroy these distinct ecological features. Given the nature of the site, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources sought to find solutions to the erosion that were non-intrusive to the

Despite the existence of some studies on theme parks that investigate the experience and enchantment of customers, there’s a gap to be filled by this article, which addresses the experience of visitors to a theme park from the perspective of hospitality. Erosion, rampant beach privatization, oil drilling, and sewage pollution were the principal causes for concern. During the 1930s, self-proclaimed beach experts produced reports and studies lamenting the sad state of the shores and planning the ideal urban beach. Inspired by Robert Moses’s Jones Beach in Long Island, they envisioned large, pristine beaches equipped with modern amenities. Yet in contrast to East Coast beach experts, who
