Abstract:
AbstractIn 1964 this journal published an article by J. Schouten with a family tree of the Ketel family of Gouda; most of the archive records consulted by the author for that purpose were already public. His principal theme, however, was the hypothesis of a third painter in the family by the name of Cornelis Ketel. The first Cornelis, who died in 1567, was the now forgotten uncle and teacher of the second, the well-known painter Cornelis Ketel who died in Amsterdam in 1616; the third Cornelis was the first one's son and thus a cousin of the second. Fresh archive research has yielded a corrected and more extensive family trcc of the Ketel family (fig. 1). Another result of this investigation is the untenability of Schouten's hypothesis: a third Cornelis did exist, but died at an early age before 1582, and there are no indications that he was an artist. Consequently, all Gouda archive records post-dating 1582 or thereabouts refer to the Cornclis Ketel who lived in Amsterdam at that time. Although he did live in Gouda for a few years after 1590/91, it was not in a 'Gasthuis' (almshouse), a misunderstanding caused by an incorrcctly transcribed archive record (fig. 6). A number of paintings which an 'old' tradition - much younger, incidentally, than Schouten would have us believe - ascribes to the second Ketel, and which because of their inferior quality arc attributed by Schouten to the third Cornelis, can therefore not be the work of the latter (figs. 7, 8, 9). Nor are they by the well-known Ketel. The addition of 'de Jonge' (the Younger) to the Amsterdam Ketel's name occurs sporadically in a few Gouda records. This suffix was not meant, as Schouten presumed, to distinguish him from his cousin, who in any case was younger than the Amsterdam Ketel, but to distinguish him as a painter from his elder uncle and teacher. Until work by this teacher is discovered, there is no point in dubbing the pupil 'the Younger'. Ketel did not suffer from gout; his brushless painting is a facet of his artistic versatility. As a matter of fact he did paint a number of works with the brush after 1600. A brother of the third Cornelis, the engineer Jacob whom Van Mander mentions in his biography of Ketel, is apparently identical with the painter Jacques Que(s)tel who lived successively in Orleans, Milan and Paris (fig. 2). He probably did not take up painting until after 1602. In 1608 he made decorations for Queen Maria de Medici's ceremonial entrance into Chartres. No work by him has come to light thus far, but a number of engravings after a portrait he painted in 1609 have survived (figs. 3 and 4). Appendix i traces how a legacy of another uncle of Ketel was distributed and passed on to his descendants. Appendix 2 lists a number of archive records pertaining to Jacob Ketel/Jacques Questel.

Abstract:
Abstract Zacharias Huber (1669-1732) evaluated in the revised Heedensdaegse Rechtsgeleertheyt arguments, hitherto unknown, which were brought forward in a case, pursued before the Court of Friesland and decided on December 14th 1718. The case dealt with the ownership of a box with gold, found on the beach of Schiermonnikoog in 1710 and which came from the ship De Witte Haas, shipwrecked off the coast in 1674. Newly found civil records show that Maria Wilree (1667-1729) from Amsterdam started the procedure to recover the box with gold, because it purportedly belonged to her father Dirck Wilree (1636-1674), director-general for the West India Company in Guinea and who died in the shipwrecking. She took legal action against Henrica Helmhout, regent of Schiermonnikoog and receiver of wrecks, and Gillis Vermeersch, representative of the West India Company. Only Vermeersch was successful in his argument, which he based on the instructions of the Company: it was forbidden to transport unregistered private goods. Such goods forfeited immediately to the Company. Consequently, Wilree claimed for the Company ownership and possession of the box with gold. Helmhout claimed to be the owner by prescription. Their arguments appear not to have been convincing.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Persuasion communication, elaboration likelihood model, intrinsic persuasion variables, extrinsic persuasion variables, Life Orientation, HlV/Aids, grade 9 learners, guidance counselling, persuasion campaigns, credibility, motivation, capacity, youth The elaboration likelihood model (Petty & Caccioppo, 1996:l-309) in the field of persuasion communication explains the role that variables can play in the measure to which the youth can be influenced and persuaded by messages aimed at changing sexual risk behaviour. In order to offer the North West Province Department of Education's Life Orientation learning area, which is marked by a life skills approach, a better chance of success, it is important to determine which of the intrinsic and/or extrinsic variables-as is hypothesised by the elaboration likelihood model-play a role with grade 9 learners. Thus, the persuasion messages within Life Orientation could be adapted accordingly. The purpose of this study was to determine what role the intrinsic and/or extrinsic persuasion variables have in the presentation of Life Orientation classes to selected grade 9 learners at three Potchefstroom high schools. Relevant literature was analysed in regard to HlV/Aids campaigns and programmes that had been launched in South Africa, especially in instances where the theoretical framework corresponded with this study. The empirical study was done by way of methodological triangulation. An overall picture was formed by way of a quantitative survey questionnaire of the persuasion variables that are found among grade 9 learners in Potchefstroom, Promosa and Ikageng. Qualitative methods (focus groups, personal interviews and non-participatory observation) were employed to investigate the deeper seated aspects of the persuasion variables. The results of the study confirm the premise of the elaboration likelihood model, and proved that intrinsic persuasion variables play an important role with grade 9 learners when HlV/Aids persuasion messages are conveyed to them through Life Orientation classes. Thus, it can be inferred that grade 9 learners of the three selected Potchefstroom schools would process these persuasion messages via the central route, which enhances the chances of long term persuasion. Further, it appears that in this study extrinsic persuasion variables mostly played a strengthening role with regard to persuasion messages. The study deduces, therefore, that Life Orientation, and specifically the content that is focused on HIV/Aids, led to the successful persuasion of grade 9 learners in the selected schools. However, the study also makes important recommendations on how the impact of these persuasion messages can be even more heightened within the context of the elaboration likelihood model.

Abstract:
In imagining the safe politicisation of the ‘mass’ in commercial modernity, the idea of the nation as a focus for enthusiasm is key. Yet in the British context the nation itself was a troubled concept. Hence, as Chapter 3 explores, historical novelists drew upon the comparative potential of stadial history, trying to reimagine British liberty in relation to the competing nationalisms of the sister kingdoms and the empire. As novelists like Henry Siddons, Anna Maria Mackenzie, James White, Anna Millikin, Ellis Cornelia Knight, Maria Edgeworth and Jane Porter realised, such competing nationalisms would have to be carefully balanced, shaped by new historical narratives, if national feeling were not to be as threatening to the emergent state as class identity. As such, the historical novel is an important forerunner to the national tales of Sydney Owenson and Maria Edgeworth.
