Abstract:
We study the highly idiosyncratic case of Paraguay, the only American nation where an indigenous language has survived as a majority language spoken by the non-indigenous population. Jopara is the name of the commonly used code that mixes Guaraní and Spanish. Characterizations of Jopara in the literature are inconclusive. Some authors call it a variety of Spanish, some a variety of Guaraní, others a new mixed language. The choice of one characterization over the other has important implications for the status of Guaraní vis-à-vis Spanish, especially for Paraguay’s educational and language planning. Here we analyze Jopara as it is represented in the novel Ramona Quebranto (rq-Jopara). We show that this written code is not a variety of either Spanish or Guaraní, nor a mixed language. Rather, it reflects properties of true code-switching. It displays both insertional and alternational characteristics (Muysken, 2000), as well as evidence of a composite matrix language (Myers-Scotton, 2002). We conclude by suggesting rq-Jopara fits best a “mixed lect” scenario (Backus, 2003) and discussing generalization to spoken Jopara.

Abstract:
Abstract As more written language data become available, the interest in written language mixing / codeswitching (LM/CS) is increasing (Sebba, Mahootian & Jonsson 2012; Sebba 2013). LM/CS in non-naturalistic (e.g., literary) texts raises issues related to gauging (1) the authenticity and representativity of a textual corpus, and deciding (2) whether categories/mechanisms of spoken LM/CS apply to written LM/CS.1 We focus on Guarani-Spanish LM/CS (Jopara) as represented in the Paraguayan novel Ramona Quebranto (RQ). We apply the framework of Muysken (1997; 2000; 2013), developed as a taxonomy of spoken LM/CS. Our contribution extends its applicability to written LM/CS. We show that Jopara has a mix of insertional and backflagging strategies, with infrequent alternations.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Identified by mixing Spanish and Guarani, the language jopara is common in informal or family environments in Paraguay. This thesis aims to understand the use of this language in the Diario Popular, especially in terms of news, titled sucesos on conflicts of urban life, mostly involving police incidents. Besides the analysis of the copies of the Daily Popular January to May 2012, data were obtained from literature. In this context, we verified the presence of the plurality of meanings of words present in the writing of the material, where the updates jopara forms of social distinction and classification, relating to people and genders in social situations themselves from public life. Thus, understanding the language in an interdisciplinary way, not as a source, but as a social practice, symbolic and historic use this notebook paper is a form of communication and expression evident in the tensions inherent in the demarcation of the differences between social groups.

Abstract:
The project NURC was created in Brazil as an attempt to establish samples of educated spoken language. Relying on pragmatics, the speakers conversations are analysed and the results shows an increasing number of typical elements of oral language. One of the most frequently studied elements has been the conversational or discursive markers, essential for cohesion and coherence of spoken text. We research the conversational markers in the language spoken in Paraguai: The Guarani jopará. It is a language that is mixed with Spanish. Is possible to find a lot of linguistic mixing in the guarani jopará conversational markers too. Therefore, this study aimed at presenting some conversational markers founded in the corpus and defining their functions within the interaction context of the communicative act.

Abstract:
Since the adoption of neoliberalism, many cities have taken to integrating nature with capital accumulation to create a sense of place. This has been closely tied to urban greening, or green "revitalization." As part of curating this desired character, city governments are working to roll out plans to restore and renew neighborhoods using their natural landscapes through methods such as reforestation, the creation of parks, and commercial development. These cities, deemed Entrepreneurial cities, are increasingly incorporating natural or green spaces into their development of character as part of their branding schemes. This research focuses on the role of nature as the site of economic development and community revitalization within Dallas, Texas. This research examines how the City of Dallas uses nature to attract capital, and how the narratives of development relate to residents' visions for development in the historically neglected Joppa neighborhood in the Trinity River Corridor. Development near Joppa could be an example of how the natural landscape is being used to not only attract developers but also to bring a different ‘class' of resident into the area. By exploring this intersection of nature and capital in Dallas, we can better understand the nuanced ways through which the neoliberalization of nature can lead to deeper social and economic disparities.

Leinonen, R. (Rikupekka). "”Ja mum mielestä siellä jopa voi vuokrata vene”:nominaalisten lauseenjäsenten epätyypillisyyksiä Suomen täydelliset venäläisnaiset -tv-sarjassa." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2016. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201609082724.

Full text
Abstract:
Tärkein lähde analyysissani on Iso suomen kielioppi. Adverbiaalin epätyypillisyyksiä aineistossani on toiseksi eniten. Rektio vaikuttaa epätyypillisyyksiin merkittävästi. Informantit käyttävät myös usein ulkopaikallissijaa tyypillisen sisäpaikallissijan asemesta. Usein epätyypillinen adverbiaali on natiivin kielestä poikkeavassa nominatiivin sijassa.

Abstract:
Electric Energy Inc.’s Joppa generating station has six 181 MW coal-fired units located on the bank of the Ohio river in Massac county, Illinois. The original GE turbine-generators were installed in the early 1950’s without any fire protection for the bearings. In 1998, Securiplex watermist systems were installed on units 5 & 6 to protect the bearing areas of those turbine-generators from fires. The fire detection was done using VESDA air sampling technology. In subsequent years, Securiplex watermist – VESDA systems were installed on the remaining four units to protect the bearing areas of those turbine-generators. This paper explains the factors that went into the decision to install this type of fire suppression technology as opposed to conventional sprinkler or deluge systems. Operating and maintenance experience with the Securiplex watermist systems and the VESDA fire detection systems will be discussed with reference made to real life events.
