Abstract:
FOR MANY YEARS “VERNON LEE” (Violet Paget 1856–1935) has received scant critical attention. More recently, however, her eclectic oeuvre, and her literary stature amongst contemporaries such as Walter Pater, Henry James, and Edith Wharton have attracted increasing interest. Despite this, Lee’s collections of supernatural short stories remain relatively unexplored. With the notable exceptions of Carlo Caballero, Jane Hotchkiss, and Catherine Maxwell, who have used the richness of Lee’s language to examine the fascinating tensions that underlie these tales, little has been done to investigate the central importance of the aesthetic object in Lee’s fantasies and its wider implications in the context of the supernatural space. This essay intends to highlight the role played by the art object (in this case the operatic voice), and the significance of the supernatural in the development of Lee’s professional and private subjectivity.

Abstract:
Acknowledged for the originality and scope of her critical writing and recognized as one of the leading intellectuals of her age, Vernon Lee (1856 -1935) has rarely been viewed as a credible novelist, and critics have rarely seen an engagement with fiction as central to her literary craft. In this essay I reexamine Vernon Lee's theory and practice of fiction and argue that she increasingly depended upon access to novel readers in order to disseminate her more complex theoretical ideas and thereby shape an ideal and perceptive readership. In the first section I demonstrate the influence of popular novelists-particularly the romance writer Henrietta Camilla Jackson Jenkin (1805-1885)-on Lee's literary training, and I also show Lee's desire to identify a potential readership for writing both fiction and nonfiction. In the second section I show both Lee's fidelity to the originality of her emerging literary voice and her commitment to the influence of fiction in determining ideas. I locate critical debates over the function of fiction and the formation of the reader in my discussion of her fictional writing (Ottilie[1883] and Miss Brown [1884]) and her nonfictional dialogues (Belcaro [1881],Baldwin [1886], and The Gospels of Anarchy [1908]). In the third section I explore Lee's delineation of a "moral economy of reading" in a close reading of two short stories-"Lady Tal" (1892) and "A Worldly Woman" (1890)-that are explicitly concerned with the influence of the fictional work on the reader.

Abstract:
The collection of the Museu Oceanográfico D. Carlos I is a historical specimen, instrument, and document collection that has been housed at the Aquário Vasco da Gama since 1935. The collection is largely the result of several scientific campaigns conducted by Dom Carlos de Bragança between 1896 and 1907. Specifically, the ichthyological collection consists of 675 surviving catalogue records of specimens caught, acquired or offered to D. Carlos I between 1892 to 1907, and includes the type specimen for Odontaspisnasutus Bragança, 1904 (junior synonym of Mitsukurinaowstoni Jordan, 1898), along with several specimens of deep sea species. All specimens were captured in coastal Portuguese waters, and were preserved in alcohol, formalin, or mounted.

Abstract:
Larvae (metacestodes) of gryporhynchid tapeworms (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) are reported for the first time from the liver of tilapia hybrids (Oreochromis aureus × O. niloticus) reared in earth ponds in northeastern Israel (along the Jordan River). This is the first record of Amirthalingamia macracantha (Joyeux & Baer, 1935), a parasite of cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), outside Africa and outside the tropics. Larvae found in the liver of tilapias (Cichlidae) were identified to species level because they possessed 20 massive rostellar hooks of 3 types, with the 4 largest hooks measuring almost 500 µm. Molecular data confirmed species identification. The possible route of introduction to Israel of this African parasite, which is large (length up to 2 cm) and potentially pathogenic for cultivated tilapias, is discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify King Hussein's belief system, or operational code as it is called by George and Holsti, and to test its influence on foreign policymaking in Jordan. The research has three related goals: to identify King Hussein's operational code through analysis of his writings and speeches during the period between 1967 and 1980, to review four major foreign policy decisions in an attempt to understand the factors affecting the decision making process in Jordan, and to analyze these decisions to ascertain the impact of the king's personality and beliefs on them in order to discover whether the operational code construct can be used to predict or explain Jordan's foreign policy behavior.

Abstract:
This chapter chronicles the VEP’s impact on black southerners and politics after the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Under the leadership of Vernon Jordan, the VEP went beyond voter registration and started programs to educate African Americans about the political process. The VEP also started hosting conferences designed to swell the number of black candidates running for various political offices across the South. During this period, not only did the VEP increase the number of black southern voters, it also grew black political power in a variety of ways at local and state levels across the American South.

Abstract:
This brief conclusion echoes the argument of the book, that the VEP served as the civil rights movement’s behind-the-scenes engine, and conservatives sabotaged the movement through the Tax Reform Act of 1969. Conservatives continue to fight black voting power, and the roots of these efforts go back to the VEP. Vernon Jordan concludes this book by suggesting the fight for political power will continue.
