This chapter discusses the hostility toward the Syrians and analyses the sentiment in both Jordan and Lebanon that went from sympathy toward the victims of war to active resentment. It mentions populaces that felt threatened demographically and explains why the Syrians received superior goods and services. It also highlights how Lebanon and Jordan blamed their economic and resource problems on the Syrians in narratives that echo common refugee and migrant stereotypes globally. The chapter describes how sympathy waned after the initial honeymoon period of brotherhood when citizens of both Lebanon and Jordan aided the refugees. It examines popular opinion, media, and elite statements about refugees through interviews, press reports, and opinion polls.

This chapter provides background information on the history and context for refugees and the systemic state problems in Lebanon and Jordan. It analyzes the state of popular oppositions at the time of the Syrian refugee crisis. It also reviews Lebanon and Jordan's history with refugees and mobilizing prior to the arrival of the Syrians, including the status of the state as a referent for social demands and its ability to respond to those demands in both Lebanon and Jordan. The chapter describes Jordan as an electoral monarchy that has centralized effective power but lives by foreign aid, while Lebanon is a consociational democracy that makes centralized governance difficult due to numerous and competing actors. It analyses how Lebanon and Jordan used social groups as the basis for the provision of important welfare services to their populations.

Abstract:
This chapter examines changes in the states hosting Syrian refugees and the citizens' relations to governance in these states. It discusses the broadening of citizen demands on the states amid state austerity policies in the context of mass refugee influx and concomitant aid to the states and the refugees. It also cites that Jordan and Lebanon are among the countries most demographically burdened with refugees in the world. The chapter provides theories that delineate the results of hosting refugees on citizen grievances, demands, and mobilizing. It focuses on popular mobilizing and their effects on political life and challenges state-centric approaches that relegate the grassroots to a politically irrelevant afterthought.

Decision making in planning should consider state-of-the-art techniques in order to minimize the risk and time involved. Proper planning in developing countries is crucial for their economical recovery and prosperity. Proper database systems, such as the ones based on GIS, are a must for developing countries so that they can catch up and build effective and interactive systems in order to modernize their infrastructures and to help improve the standard of living of their citizens. The huge and fast advancement in computing and information technology make it easy for the developing countries to build their database infrastructures. GIS-technology is one of the best and fastest tools to build such systems, manage resources, encourage businesses, and help to make efficient and cost-effective decisions. For the purpose of a better informed decision making in planning the improvement of the Bank of Jordan in the city of Amman, Jordan, we had to build a database system and a digital map for the city of Amman, the Bank of Jordan, its branches in Amman, and all other banks and their branches in Amman. We used the popular Geomedia software to allow an interactive time-saving data management; to offer the ability to perform different analysis, including statistical ones; and to provide graphical geospatial results on maps. By using Geomedia software, we built many layers needed for the planning processes and mainly for the region of Amman due to the lack of available digital data in the area. Some layers concern the project and relate to the bank, such as the geographic distribution of the Bank of Jordan branches and its ATMs; and others for the comparison, such as the geographic distribution of all other banks, their branches, and ATMs in Amman. This is to allow the decision makers to compare with all competitive banks in Amman. Besides the geographic location of all existing banks, important attribute data are provided for the Bank of Jordan in specific and all the other banks in general (Batty et al., 1994a, 1994b; Burrough et al., 1980; Doucette et al., 2000; Elmasri &amp; Navathe, 2004; Goodchild, 2003; Longley et al., 1999a, 1999b).

Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors focus on cognitive architectures that are developed with the intent to explain human cognition. The authors first describe the mission of cybernetics and early cognitive architectures and recount the popular criticism that these perspectives fail to provide genuine explanations of cognition. Moving forward, the authors propose that there are three pervasive problems that modern cognitive architectures must address: the problem of consciousness, the problem of embodiment, and the problem of representation. Wild Systems Theory (Jordan, 2013) conceptualizes biological cognition as a feature of self-sustaining embodied context that manifests itself at multiple, nested, time-scales. In this manner, Wild Systems Theory is presented as a particularly useful framework for coherently addressing the problems of consciousness, embodiment, and representation.

This chapter explores the built environment of the city at a personal scale. In a cover titled “The Comix Factory” designed for the comics magazine Raw, Dutch artist Joost Swarte employs the formal depth of comics to suggest their connection to tactile qualities of urban life in three dimensions. American Chris Ware’s ambitious boxed anthology Building Stories invites a tactile reading experience and pushes the architectural form of the comics multiframe to its limits. Also hailing from America, Mark Beyer’s transposition of his popular Amy and Jordan comic to the format of “City of Terror Trading Cards” uses tactility to implicate comics in city circulation patterns. Canadian artist Seth has been building tactile models of buildings in Dominion—the fictional setting for many of his comics. The Ghost of Gaudí by El Torres and Jesús Alonso Iglesias highlights Barcelona’s architecture.

Abstract:
This chapter reports on a study of the content of extremely short stories (ESS) written by freshman undergraduates in the language and literature department of a university in Jordan. It looks at the origins and benefits of extremely short stories, with particular reference to the extensive work of Peter Hassall who established the first Extremely Short Story Competition (ESSC) for non-native English speakers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study is the first in an Arab country outside the UAE. Students' most popular themes included problems and problem-solving, travel, student life, family, and friends. Stories contained features of academic writing as well as many literary elements, including character, plot, metaphor, simile, and more. The chapter concludes by suggesting that the ESS can successfully serve as a bridge to academic writing and bring writer and reader closer together by generating interesting texts for audiences other than the instructors.
